This course analyzes the link between politics, media, and Islam. This seminar introduces students to several aspects of mass communication studies as seen from the perspective of  Society/C Socie ty/Commun ommunity, ity, Sender/Rece Sender/Receiver, iver, Channel/E Channel/Effect ffect,, and Active Active Reception Reception models. models. Key concepts in media studies, along with media practices and debates are covered in this class. The concep concepts ts and themes themes of media media commun communica icatio tion n (mass (mass commun communica icatio tion) n) will will be critically examined. While analyzing the process of an “event” as it becomes “news,” this coursee highlights cours highlights the interaction interactionss between between traditiona traditionall “cultural” “cultural” values and modern modern “communicat “comm unication” ion” ideas. It is crucial to analyze analyze the experiences experiences that have shaped media communication, politics, and Islam (dakwah (dakwah), ), using these two approaches (“culture” and “communication”). The course challenges us also to use multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to  politics and Islam on how the media modify themselves.

Attendance and Participation (20 %)

This course is designed as a seminar, which requires attendance and active participation in discussions after presentation. Classes can only be missed for medical reasons. Each student is strongly demanded to attend and participate the class.

Abstract (20 % total)

Each student should make an abstract. This abstract is a one-page long text, single space, font 12, Times New Roman, and standard margins. The abstract must include seven  paragraphs, andcontains: Context and background (pros and cons, dassein dasseinand and das  das sollen, sollen, what is and what ought  to be, facts and ideals, apparent state of affairs (ASA) and intended state of affairs (ISA)). Central question (1)and Sub-questions, minors, sectorial (3 questions), which are in line with your theoretical framework. Statement (either thesis, or hypothesis, or antithesis, or synthesis), the answer to your  central question); we suggest that you only apply the thesis  statement. thesis statement. Theoretical framework(Preferred framework(Preferred Author/Reference). Methodological procedure (Conceptual foundation). Analysis (the Answer to your minor questions; your findings). Conclusion (Reflection). Key words: 5 words.

Cited works (relevant and authoritative references) 2 pages. Please make copies of your abstract for your classmates and for the instructors of  the course.

Summary or book chapters report (20 % total)

Each student will write the summary of the chapter selected and present it to the class. The purpose is to help others understand the main ideas and content of the chapters  presented. This summary will be later on useful for your term paper. This will be part of  your term paper, as you will underline your theoretical framework. This also will help you to determine your conceptual framework. The last part of this summary should be linked linke d with politics politics and Islam (dakwah (dakwah), ), in particular the Islamic political issue of your  concern. Please make copies of your text for your colleagues and for the instructors of the course. 4. Term paper (40 %)

Each student is asked to write an essay of the chosen topic. This is an extension of the abstract you have presented in class. This paper is basically the implementation of the theoretical framework that you have chosen/developed, and the conceptual foundation you have identi identifie fied d accord according ing to the topic of your your choice choice,, based based on your your previo previous us educational background and discipline.

The paper should be no more than 20 pages, excluding bibliography and notes, using standard margins, font 12, Times New Roman, double space. Punctuation rules must be respected. Paper longer than 20 pages will be penalized and its author will lose points. Out of courtesy for your colleagues, late papers will be penalized, except when delay is approved in advance by instructors. The papershould contain: Cover page (title, your name and ID, your instructor(s), your program, and the month and year, the city). Abstractsingle page and space (a revised version of the abstract you have presented in class, taking into account feedback from the audience/instructors). This is compulsory. Introduction (Sub A) (an extension of the context, background, your research question[s] and thesis statement). This is compulsory. Body(an extension of your theoretical and methodological frameworks, and your case study as well as the extension of your Analysis/findings, which include:the results of

your analysis (theand answer to your minor questions)) from the data you have collected using the theory approach/methodology you have selected.This analysis should be 56 page-long. In brief, the body of the paper should contain as follows: Sub B. Discussion: 1. Theoretical Framework; Framework; 2. Conceptual Foundation; Foundation; 3. Case Study; and 4. Analysis/Findings.. This is compulsory. Analysis/Findings Conclusion(Sub C) (a reflection of your whole evaluation and judgments). This is compulsory. Notes, (either footnotes or endnotes, using Thurabian style),is compulsory. Appendix, if any (non-compulsory). Graphics, tables, figures, if any (non-compulsory). Bibliography(at least 2 pages)is compulsory. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated .
