Service Features A.

Serviceability To ensure machine reliability and copies of the highest quality, Canon U.S.A., Inc. recommends that a Quality Assurance Visit be performed every 250,000 copies. Quality Assurance requires the cleaning, checking, and replacement of parts as necessary for specific areas every 250,000 copies. The frequency of the Quality Assurance Visits will depend on the following conditions: monthly copy volume, environment, type of originals copied, and customer’s handling of the copier equipment. A QA Procedure will require the replacement of various consumable parts every 250,000 copies.

Upgrading Canon U.S.A. will provide dealers with the Service Support Tool (Version 1.25 or later) via Canon e-Support Center for updating the following system components: •

System Software stored on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Language

HD Format

Remote User Interface (RUI) stored on the HDD

BootROM stored on a Flash Double Inline Memory Module (FDIMM) on the Main Controller Printed Circuit Board (PCB) When the hard disk drive is replaced, the Service Support Tool is used to format the new HDD and load software. Canon U.S.A. will make the data for these updates available to the dealers via CD-ROM. Note: A Personal Computer is required when installing upgraded firmware. Use a Network or Parallel Bicentronics IEEE-1284 I/F cable 4 as an interface between the personal computer and the imageRUNNER 8500 to enable high-speed transmission of the data. E.

Computer Requirements For Upgrading The following are the recommended Desktop PC or laptop specifications to use for the download: 1) CPU: Pentium™ 133MHz or higher 2) Memory: 16MB or more (32MB or more is preferable) 3) Free HDD Capacity: 10MB or more of available hard disk space 4) Printer Port: ECP mode must be both supported and selected 5) Network: Must posses 10 BaseT or PCMCIA slot (Ethernet card) 6) USB Port: Must posses one or more USB ports (future consideration) 7) Windows™ 95/98/NT 4.0/2000 (Windows Me is not supported) Note: Lower speed only is possible when using Windows NT & 2000.

4

The following Bicentronics I/F cable is required: One end of the cable should have a TYPE A connector prescribed by IEEE1284 (25 pin, for PC connection). The other end should have a TYPE B connector (38 pin, for copier connection). Cables conforming to the IEEE1284 are marked “IEEE Std. 1284 compliant.”

F.

Handling Of The Hard Disk Drive The imageRUNNER 8500 uses a HDD for storage of the firmware and image data. A HDD is easily affected by shock, vibration, and static charge; therefore its handling requires special care. When transporting a HDD, which is obtainable as a service part, it must be kept in its original package until it is installed into the main body. Exemption clause: There may be an accident or defect with the HDD in the machine, causing loss, destruction or alteration of data received or stored on the HDD. In no event will Canon U.S.A. or any of its affiliates or dealers be liable for any damages for loss of data received or stored on the hard disk, including loss arising from lost opportunity to use such data, even if canon is informed of possibility of such damages. Therefore, it is recommended not to store data on the HDD without having copies or printouts of such data outside. (Review the terms of the product's limited warranty for more details.)

Technical Training A.

Overview The imageRUNNER 8500 training will be initially provided through the release of the imageRUNNER 8500 Certification Guide. Certification Guides are to provide imageRUNNER 600 certified Technicians a reference for new technology that is used in the imageRUNNER 8500. The Certification Guide will highlight the differences, through pictures and reference materials, between the imageRUNNER 8500 and the imageRUNNER 600. The Educational Services department's intention is to keep the certified Technicians up to date with current imageRUNNER technology. The Certification Guide was announced on Canon e-Support Services on April 4th, 2001. The second phase of training for the Technician who is not currently imageRUNNER 600 certified will be to incorporate the imageRUNNER 8500 into the already existing imageRUNNER 600 class. Here the Technicians will learn, through a series of lectures and hands-on labs, the workings of the imageRUNNER 8500. This updated courseware will be available in the Regional Training Centers in August of 2001. Until then any Technician can simply complete the imageRUNNER 600 class and request an imageRUNNER 8500 Certification Guide to complete imageRUNNER 8500 Certification.

B.

Obtaining imageRUNNER 8500 Certification The Certification Guide: All service technicians currently certified on the imageRUNNER 600 will be able to obtain the Certification Guide in three ways: 1. Downloading it from Canon e-Support Services. 2. Requesting it from the Regional Training Centers via e-mail or on a CD. 3. Requesting a printed version from their Regional Training Center All service technicians currently certified on imageRUNNER 600 products wishing to receive imageRUNNER 8500 certification, using Canon’s Certification Guide, must take the following steps: 1. Obtain the Guide from one of the sources listed above. 2. Thoroughly read the Certification Guide and complete the Exam at the end of the guide. 3. After the applicant completes the Certification Guide, they can mail or fax the Answer Sheet along with the completed Certification Submission form to their Regional Training Center. 4. The Regional Training Center will grade the Answer Sheet and if a score of 70% or higher is achieved the Technician will receive the Certificate. 5. If a passing grade is not achieved the Service Manager will be notified of the score and the technician will have to complete the Certification Guide again.

C.

imageRUNNER 8500 In-House Training Course As mentioned above the Educational Services department will incorporate the imageRUNNER 8500 training into the already existing imageRUNNER 600 courseware. This course is currently four days. However, in August of 2001, it will be extended to five days to allow for comprehensive training of all of the imageRUNNER 600/550/60 and the imageRUNNER 8500. This five-day course will be available in all five of the Canon Regional Training Centers.

D.

Who Should Attend This training is designed with the Field Technician in mind. Real world practices and tips were added to bring additional perspective to the course. This expertise can be a positive for the novice Technician or the most experienced. If you want or need product certification for one of your technicians and if you want to provide your customer with the highest level of service support possible this course will give you the information you desire.

Appendix A.

imageRUNNER 8500 Series Limited Warranty Conditions

Canon U.S.A., Inc. and Canon Canada, Inc. (collectively "Canon") warrant the imageRUNNER 8500 and Canon branded options designed for use with the imageRUNNER 8500 (collectively the "Product") to be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal use and service for a period of 90 days after delivery to the original purchaser or 600,000 copies, whichever comes first. During such warranty period, Canon shall replace, without charge, any defective part with a new or comparable rebuilt part. This warranty shall not extend to consumables such as paper, chemicals, and toner as to which there shall be no warranty or replacement. Warranty replacement shall not extend the original warranty period of the Product. This warranty shall only apply if the Product is used in conjunction with compatible computers, peripheral equipment and software, as to which items Canon shall have no responsibility. This warranty does not cover the Canon Drum Unit for the Product, for which a separate warranty is given. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS REGARDING MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, RELATING TO THE USE OR PERFORMANCE OF A PRODUCT. NO OTHER EXPRESS WARRANTY, CONDITION OR GUARANTY, EXCEPT AS MENTIONED ABOVE, GIVEN BY ANY PERSON, FIRM OR CORPORATION WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT SHALL BIND CANON OR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER. NO WARRANTY IS GIVEN ON ANY USED PRODUCT. This warranty shall be void and of no force and effect if the Product is damaged as a result of (a) abuse, neglect, mishandling, alteration, electric current fluctuation or accident, (b) improper use, including failure to follow operating instructions or maintenance and environmental conditions prescribed in Canon's operator's manual or other documentation, (c) installation or repair by other than authorized service representatives qualified by Canon who are acting in accordance with Canon's service bulletins, (d) use of supplies or parts (other than those distributed by Canon) which damage the Product or cause abnormally frequent service calls or service problems, or (e) use of the Product with non-compatible computers, peripheral equipment or software, including the use of the Product in any system configuration not recommended in any manual distributed with the Product. Nor does this warranty extend to any Product on which the original identification marks or serial numbers have been defaced, removed, or altered. CANON RECOMMENDS THAT DATA STORED ON THE PRODUCT'S HARD DISK DRIVE BE DUPLICATED OR BACKED UP TO PREVENT ITS LOSS IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OR OTHER MALFUNCTION OF THE HARD DISK DRIVE. NEITHER CANON NOR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER SHALL BE LIABLE FOR PERSONAL INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE (UNLESS CAUSED SOLELY AND DIRECTLY BY THE NEGLIGENCE OF CANON OR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER), LOSS OF REVENUE OR PROFIT, FAILURE TO REALIZE SAVINGS OR OTHER BENEFITS, EXPENDITURES FOR SUBSTITUTE EQUIPMENT OR SERVICES, LOSS OR CORRUPTION OF DATA INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DATA STORED ON THE PRODUCT'S HARD DISK DRIVE, STORAGE CHARGES OR OTHER SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE USE, MISUSE OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCT, REGARDLESS OF THE LEGAL THEORY ON WHICH THE CLAIM IS BASED AND EVEN IF CANON OR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. NOR SHALL RECOVERY OF ANY KIND AGAINST CANON OR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER BE GREATER IN AMOUNT THAN THE PURCAHSE PRICE OF THE PRODUCT CAUSING THE ALLEGED DAMAGE. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES ALL RISKS AND LIABILITY FOR LOSS, DAMAGE OR INJURY TO PERSONS AND PROPERTY OF THE PURCHASER OR OTHERS ARISING OUT OF THE POSSESSION, USE, MISUSE, OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCT SOLD BY CANON NOT CAUSED SOLELY AND DIRECTLY BY THE NEGLIGENCE OF CANON OR ANY AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDER. THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT EXTEND TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER OF THE PRODUCT AND STATES SUCH PURCHASER'S EXCLUSIVE REMEDY.
