Virtual I/O Server – What? •
What is VIOS? – Appliance - runs in a partition on a POWER6/7 server or blade – Provides virtual resources to AIX, Linux, and IBM i (i7.1/i6.1) client partitions – Facilitates sharing of physical I/O resources between partitions – Core function is virtual I/O: disks, tape, optical, Ethernet – VIOS packaged in PowerVM – Advanced functions (Suspend/Resume, LPM, AMS, NPIV, etc) – Two Virtual I/O Server partitions recommended to provide redundancy – Partitions can have a mix of physical and virtual resources • Except blades/PureFlex, and certain functions e.g. LPM

Virtual I/O Server – Why? • Why use VIOS? – Benefits of virtualisation Increased utilisation + Improved service + Improved flexibility = Reduced costs (hardware, floor space, energy, licensing)

To VIOS or not to VIOS… •
It depends!

VIOS not usually the best match with IBM i when – Using only internal disks – Only running a single partition
•
VIOS is often a good match with IBM i when – – – –

There are many partitions Multiple operating system environments e.g. IBM i and AIX / Linux Creating/deleting partitions often e.g. for testing Requirement to attach to certain external storage (wider range supported via VIOS than direct attach)
If all partitions to run IBM i only – Consider strategy, advanced functionality requirements, etc – Is VIOS still best option? – Is IBM i hosting IBM i sufficient?

Installing from Local Repository Assumes you will boot over the network as the install image is on HMC – need to ensure that networking is setup correctly
NIM Server IP Address is the ip address of the HMC. Here the image VIOS_V2.2.2 has been previously imported 17
