Unique Achievement
ECO-FRIENDLY Scaling-UP
Eco-friendly coal stockyard at Jaigarh Port
Unique Achievement JSW Jaigarh Port believes in not just growing, but growing in an eco-friendly manner. It ensures all our activities support our ideals of a clean and green environment. In line with this belief, JSW Jaigarh is setting up a fully covered stack yard to meet the coal requirements of our 1200 MW power plant at Ratnagiri in an ecofriendly manner. Thermal coal remains India’s most important fuel used to generate electricity. With increasing environmental concerns, storage and handling of coal in large quantities has become a daunting task. One of the major challenges is in handling coal in an ecological-friendly manner. The eco-friendly project involves construction of a 440 m long covered shed, housing 16 m high coal stack. It features mechanized facilities such as
22
Stacker cum Reclaimer (SCR) and has a capacity of 4000/2000T per hour. The shed spans 104 m in length with 6 m in height, with walls supporting the roof structure. The roof at the crown is 46.5 m high from ground level. The structure’s storage capacity ranges from 260,000 – 280,000 MT of coal, depending on the type of coal and storage plan opted. The shed’s smart construction involved about 9,000 cum of concrete work, 3,500 tons of space frame structure and 45,000 sqm. roof sheeting. The space frame structure was designed and supplied by M/s Xuzhou Zhongmei Steel Construction Co Ltd, China. The project used JSW coated sheets as roofing material. To lower its risk factors, the shed is equipped with a fire-fighting and dust suppression system. The load trials at the shed are in progress and construction work is in an advanced stage of completion.
Eco-friendly Results
•
Cost Reduction: Preventing coal from getting wet in monsoon helps lower the cost of drying it before it is fed to bowl mills. Overall, this helps bring down the production time and power cost.
•
Clean Environment: A fully clad stack yard averts fine coal particles from soaring in the air due to wind, thereby reducing pollution in nearby surroundings. It also ensures power plant switchyard and surrounding areas remain dust free.

At JSW, we believe that inclusive growth is not a destination but a journey made possible by the progressive engagement of all stakeholders in the development process. In partnerships with external development agencies, JSW strives to achieve sustainable development in all spheres of life including integrated community development, promotion of arts and culture, environment protection and sports.
Environment Conservation On its way to growth and expansion, JSW Group is also conscious about its responsibility towards the environment and social development. Eco-efficiency is a principle that is practiced seriously at JSW. Preventive measures are taken into account right from the planning stage and are incorporated through production and growth. Necessary systems are installed from day one and continuous efforts for environment conservation to help the
port become the frontrunner among ecofriendly ports in India. Jaigarh is an important mango-growing region and its economy depends to a great extent on a good yield. It is therefore important that the local environment is left undisturbed, irrespective of the development initiatives taking place. In order to sustain nature, the group has executed a three-pronged strategy:
39
Corporate Social Responsibility
Control pollution through technology Jaigarh Port uses technology extensively to prevent air pollution and eliminate the possibility of any dust particles and remnants from escaping to the surrounding areas.
40
Desulphurisation Unit
Aqua Dine System
The Group is committed to install the latest technology to conserve the environment in the best possible manner. The power division of the group has installed a port-based 4 x 300 MW thermal power plant adjacent to the port. Apart from using low-ash and low-sulphur coal to reduce sulphur dioxide emission from stacks, the plant is in the process of installing a Flue Gas Desulphurisation Unit (FGD) at an investment of about Rs 600 crore.
The system is installed at every stage right from the unloading point to the reclamation, to reduce dust emission. At the unloading point, water is sprinkled before and after the material is transferred into the hopper, installed on the ship unloaders. Likewise, in every transfer tower, the system is installed on the hopper to continuously sprinkle water. It is also installed at the stacker reclaimer to prevent dust from the reclaimed material.
Windshields The Port has erected windshields to stem the flow of wind to the stackyard. The windshield is designed to stop the wind from entering the stackyard from the SW and NE directions thereby preventing the dust from spreading to the nearby areas. With a length of 540 m and height of 14 m, the windshield is large enough to cover the stockpiles. Create a green belt In addition to the traditional ways of dust suppression, the port will have a thick green belt around the stackyard to maintain the ecological balance. An area of 6 hectares under the green belt development programme is being developed wherein 30,000 saplings, with a survival rate of 80 per cent,
have been already planted. This apart, a 10-hectare mango plantation is also being developed. Air monitoring station to keep an eye on pollution levels
Other activities at Ratnagiri
A high-quality ambient air monitoring system is installed at the port to measure and record the concentration of pollutants like particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. The dust emissions are monitored on a continuous basis and RSPM levels are displayed on the electronic display board.

Corporate Social Responsibility
JSW Group has been making conscious efforts through its CSR/CS programmes to achieve inclusive growth. Inclusive Growth Training for Local youth JSW Jaigarh Port is making conscious efforts to make the local youth a part of the development program. This is achieved through sponsoring candidates from the local villages for diploma engineering programs. They would be absorbed by the Group in the future. The Port has laid a lot of focus on developing unemployed youth by enhancing their technical skills so that they can be absorbed by the allied industries which would come up in the vicinity. This way, the Port is addressing both their education as well as their employability.
42
Community development JSW Group understands the need for taking the local community along with the ongoing development so that they don’t feel left out of the entire process. The Port has installed 25 TPD Ice plant and cold storage for the benefit of the fishing society. Fish finders, Outboard motors, fishing nets and GPS have been distributed to fishermen to increase their yield. The Port has contributed to promote sports and cultural activities in the area, financially helped distressed families, distributed computers and printers to gram panchayats, constructed roads etc. The main focus of the above programmes is to help raise the living standards of the people who have lived in the area.
