Developing an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Using Mobile Web Platform Application for Informatics College Caloocan: A Basis for A quick response security measure
Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature and Studies The proponents have conducted library searching and internet surfing to further give a wide array of references and basis of the development of the system.
Foreign Literature In an article “Integrated Library System on Staff models in Academic Libraries” by Moira Fitzgerald (2014). He compared how the traditional integrated library system (ILS) and the next generation ILS may impact the system and technical services of staff at an academic library. The method used in this analysis is to select two categories of ILSs-two wellestablished traditional ILSs and three leading next-generation ILSs-and compare them by focusing on two aspects: (1) software architecture and (2) workflows and functionality. The result suggest that the next generation ILS could have substantial implications for library systems and technical staffing models, suggesting that the staffing models can be redesigned and librarian and staff can be redefined to meet the opportunities and challenges brought on by the next-gen ILS. ref:http://digitalcommons.cwu.edu/libraryfac/3/ In this article it has shown how a library system to adhere to the needs and demands of the librarian and the students. This will be a defining factor for

the development of the system as it will impact the entirety of the system and the framework.
According to Robson (2001), usability is a key requirement for users, says Elisabeth Robson, Product manager for Online Computer Library Center. The catalogue has become a way to pull together disparate resources, including commercial resources and web links. Management systems also allow circulation, including check in/check out and enable libraries to purchase materials and track where they are.
In this article it show that usability as a key requirement for users will aid in the management systems and thus contribute to the overall productivity of the librarian. Using the OPAC would merge all resources into one source for easier searching and borrowing.
According to Chad (2009), consulting is at a major point of change in the wider information economy within which library systems form part of a larger whole. He was writing in a briefing paper about the study in library management systems. This study examined the systems used in higher-education libraries across the UK and came up with some significant observations and recommendations. It noted that the LMS market in UK higher education is already mature and that four main vendors (ExLibris, Innovative, SirsiDynix and
19

Talis) have almost 90 per cent of the market. This market maturity means, according to the study authors, that the benefits to libraries of changing LMS provider are limited.
Library users expect to find everything together says Stephen Abram, vice president for innovation at SirsiDynix, the leading provider of software solutions and associated services for libraries. According to her traditionally, the library management system or integrated library system (ILS) was responsible for running libraries efficiently and effectively. Over the last few years, the role of the ILS has been expanding from meeting library needs to delivering user experience.
In this article the use of Integrated Library System has contributed to the libraries operations efficiently and effectively. As the availability and reliability of the internet goes rampant, users particularly the students would want to find the sources they need as much as possible. This will be taken into consideration for the development of the system to match the reliability and speed of searching for resources in the library.
Local Literature According to Eden (2011), views that most libraries are forced to work with fewer staff because of the having a more improved and modernized system

for their library. According also to the study, the library administration need to emphasize to their staff that the organization has a vested interest in providing them with the tools and training they need to assist the organization in the new information marketplace. These may include search engines, circulation systems, and the online public access catalog.
According to Lopez (2002), University of the Philippines Mindanao when UP in Mindanao accepted its first batch of students in 1996, the Main Library collection was integrated with the core collection of the School of Management (SOM) Library at the Stanfilco Bldg., Ladislawa Avenue, Buhangin, Davao City. The Filipiniana and General References were housed together with the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) collection in Room 2 of the Philippine Coconut Authority. In the Second Semester AY 1996-1997, the CAS Library moved to its main campus in Bago Oshiro. Upon the recognition of UPin Mindanao by the Board of Regents (BOR) as a constituent unit (CU) of the UP System, the CAS was split into two (2), namely: College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM). The Main Library transferred to the newly renovated building where the main collection was set-up beside the books of the CHSS and the CSM. In July 2002, the library established the Library Educational Media and Information Technology Office (LEMITO). The LEMITO handles the audio-visual services, internet and the connectivity of the library. It currently holds office at the Elias B.

Lopez Hall Dormitory. Later, the Main Library collection which grew from 100 titles to 6,191 volumes at the end of May 2004, and was transferred to the Administration Bldgs. today, the Main Library occupies the former UP in Mindanao Cultural Center (UPMCC) building.
Foreign Studies In Joaquim Jorge Rodrigues Silvestre’s An Integrated Library System on the CERN document Server. He mentioned that with the creation of the new library systems, new and different approaches were develop. For instance, a common feature among any computer-based circulation system is to record details about the item on loan and details of about the person who loaned the item. He also pointed out back then libraries in US, eighty-column of punched cards were used to keep records, while in the UK appropriate equipment were often used and developed to keep records, thus the possibility to register a unique amount of specific books and information of borrowers where kept and hold. Based on this he have concluded that developing or using an Integrated Library System is indeed helpful for the librarian and staff members of the library and the possibility of losing a data is minimal. ref:https://cds.cern.ch/record/1294486/files/CERN-THESIS-2010-115.pdf
According to Kumar and Vohra (2011) who presented in their research Online Public Access Catalogue Usage at Panjab University Library,

Chandigarh. They observed the usage of OPAC of students and faculty of PAnjab University Library, Chnadirarh. OPAC and revolutionary information retrieval system, that has a huge amount of access to bibliograph information through search capabilities such as keyword searching, Boolean searching, truncation, proximity searching, and item identity number searching. The article features various aspect of OPAC such as frequency of use, purpose and ease of use. Kumar (2011) compared the effect of web searching OPAC users in the university in the libraries in India. His study adopted a questionnaire-based survey. The survey found out that the majority of users in all universities made use of web-based resources. This influenced their OPAC searching process greatly, as the majority of searches were performed on OPAC-like popular search engines. The study revealed that the information-searching behavior of academicians was changing significantly in the web environment. A large number of users explored the web to garner relevant information for academic purposes. It is also clear from the study that internet search engines not only affected OPAC users in developed countries, but also impacted upon the less developed countries like India. ref:http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/35899/5/chapter%202.pdf
According to “Web-based online public access catalogues of IIT libraries” by Madhusdhan and Aggarwal (2011). They evaluated in their study Web-based online public access catalogues of IIT libraries. The study

shows the various feature of web-based OPACs in six (Integrated Information Theory) IIT libraries. The study featured the different features of web-based OPACs, in which the page-layout received a high percentage having a 93.33 percent. In contrast session filters was the weakest category with the only 40.47 percent. These results indicates that the web-based OPACs is an effective cataloging system. But albeit the results 50 percent of web-based OPACs that was used received an above average ranking which is lacking in federated search, adjunct thesaurus help and spell check facilities, which seems to raise many questions regarding its effectiveness. Thus needs to be addressed as a priority in the subsequent generations of the web-based OPACs and their development.
According to Charuasia (2010), connotes the term library with use of automatic data processing machines to perform routine library activities. It implies a high degree of mechanization of various routine and repetitive tasks &operations and processes are left to be performed by human beings. The study stresses library automation as the application of computers and utilization of computer based products and services in the performance of different operations and functions or in the provision of various services and output products. In addition to computer advancement, telecommunication and audiovisual technologies gives away to new possibilities in information processing.

According to Back & Bailey (2010), explored the design space of mash-up techniques for the faultless inclusion of information from Web services into websites. They considered the cases where an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is either the target of such addition or the basis of the information being included. They focused on client-side techniques in which each user’s browser contacts Web services directly because this approach lends itself to the creation of HTML widgets. The widgets allow the integration and customization of Web services without requiring programming. constitute two vital precondition for the broad adoption of techniques in libraries, which in turn has the potential to vastly increase the reach and visibility of their electronic resources in the wider community.
Local Studies According to Alcarez, Jason C’s “Using the extensible markup language (XML) to represent the accounting and acquisition library processes of the University of the Philippines Library system” study. Develop document-type definitions (DTDs) for Extensible Markup Language (XML) representations of the accounting and acquisition library processes of the University of the Philippines Library System in Diliman. Computers, with proper software, can process XML documents regardless of the hardware used, the operating system installed, or how the document is accessed (on the same computer system or over a network connection).
The aforementioned features make XML documents cross-platform compatible. Systems analysis and design (SAD) and process modeling of the library processes in question yield the document-type definition. Test XML documents are created from documents gathered from the library system. These XML documents are tested against the formulated DTD. The XML documents and DTD are tested using two different operating systems (Microsoft Windows 2000 and FreeBSD 4.7) to verify cross-platform compatibility.

Extensible style sheet language transform (XSLT) documents are created to present the data in the XML documents in the more familiar formats seen in some of the collected documents. Utility programs are created by the researcher to aid in verifying the XML documents against the DTD, aid in translating the XML data with XSLT documents.
According to Edmund Balnaves (2010) in his study on Open Source Library Management Systems: A Multidimensional Evaluation. Balnaves in his review of the functionality and installed base of open source Library Management system (LMS) have evoled considerably. Interest in web 2.0 functionality has opened an opportunity for these system in an otherwise mature LMS market. These OSS project shows a variety design and approaches, it has solid patronage and good user and developer community engagement. The emergence of support organizations such as LibLime that provide support for several different OSS is a further indicator of the growing maturity of the open source LMS marketplace. Koha, Evergreen and PMB demonstrate very active developer communities with secure institutional backing. Their code base and schema show solid technical evolution and these systems have been nimble in their accommodation of new Library 2.0 innovations. PMB and Gnuteca have a strong non-English language installation and support base. While Koha shows the most sophistication in managing the open source development process, Evergreen and Gnuteca exhibit strong

object-oriented design philosophy in their code and schema design. Emilda, OpenBiblio and PhpMyLibrary continue to have a role in serving the small libraries because of their relative ease of implementation and simple intuitive interfaces. A multidimensional view of OSSs will enable better decision making at the point of system selection. The success of software has never been solely down to the technical merits of a system. The adopted base of software is, of course, one of the most significant elements of software, both in sponsorship for further enhancement and development and in assuring a degree of technical awareness of the product that encourages adoption. In this respect, particularly, the analysis of all five dimensions suggested in this report gives a more complete insight into the current state of each system.
In JinJiawei(2013) study about Web-Based Library Management System with PHP and MySQL. Jiawei in his thesis develop a web-based library system based on PHP and MySQL in order to reduce the cost of management and make it convenient for the user. The web-based library management system includes the most popular components a common library management system has, administration, book seeker, leasing and E-mail. Besides, it has more humanistic functions such as second-hand online book shop and top 10 ranking. The website was tested on some of the most popular browsers. The basic functions of Internet Information Services 7.5 and detail features of PHP and MySQL were selected for the purpose of this project. The

structure of Library Management System which included a website interacting with a database was determined. The system and development tools were chosen based on their specific features that benefit the system. Furthermore, all necessary components in the library management system were integrated and tested. The first result of this study was an understanding of the advantages of PHP and how MySQL benefited a large project. The second result was building practical PHP and MySQL projects based on a web server on Windows 7 ultimate. The development tools directly affected the quality of the website. The website which was built in this project offered a high performance secure and stable and an easy to maintain environment.
The website improved the
management of a university library.
