Influence Finding Your Own Style
“You don’t need to go to a book you got the record.”
Mike has spent countless hours learning the music music of his biggest influences. T To o eventually develop your own unique approach Mike believ believes es in closely studying the m music usic of historic players like Miles Da Davis vis Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk. Mike encourages students to drop the real book or any sheet music and analyze these player’s approa pproach to composition and harmony using their seminal recordings. Mike also believes that it is more beneficial to focus on studying one artist at a time rather than trying to learn multiple compositions simultaneously from several different differe nt players. For example take JJoe oe Henderson and learn ten or fifteen tunes by him. Spend a month listening to o Henderson and understanding understanding his style. styl By the end of the year if you ha have ve repeated this process with m multiple ultiple composers month after month you will amass a large repertoire of over 100 tunes b byy the end of the year year.. Mike encourages his students to call other like-minded musicians to play the music you’re influenced by. Eventually you will create your own scene. Conti ontinue to learn new music and take in new influences. Repeating this process will help you learn new music quickly which is an advantages skill for a professional musicians. Don’tt simply practice the same music. The most successful Don’ musician according to Mike is one that can come to the rehearsal look at new mus music ic once and be ready to play it on a gig that night.
