Passage Most kinds of mammals live on the land. But few of them such as seals, walruses, whales and dolphins make their homes in the sea. Some of these animals can stay under water for long periods of time. But, like all mammals, they are air-breathers. They must come to the surface to breathe from time to time. Whales and dolphins look so much like fish that many people think they are fish. But they are mammals. Thay have hair, they are warm blooded and their babies drink milk from their mother’s breast. The dolphins and porpoises are really small whales. Most people can’t tell a dolphin and porpoise apart, but there is a way. The snout of a dolphin is beak like and it almost seems to be smiling. A porpoise has a rounded snout. Dolphins are also much more playful than porpoises. They often leap out of the water. Seals, sea lions and walruses belong to a second group of sea mammals. All these animals are called pinnipeds which mean ‘fin-foot’. Their fins are simply flattened feet. These sea mammals are very different from the ones in the first group. Although they spend much of their time in the water, yet they are able to come on to the land and waddle about on their fin feet. We know whales and dolphins are mammals because A. They have hair on their body B. They are warm blooded C. Young ones drink their mother’s D. All of the above

the passage given below and answer the question that follows:

Passage Water covers most of our planet. It can be found in oceans, lakes, and ponds, and in the ground itself. The cycle of water from liquid to vapour to solid is called the water cycle. The water cycle is an exciting and continuous process, with no beginning or end. The water cycle is the movement of water in the environment by evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The warm sun causes liquid water to evaporate (to change from a liquid into a gas or vapour) and rise up into the sky. The water vapours that are formed cool during evaporation. These cooled water vapours form clouds in the sky. The transformation of the vapour into clouds (that is, from a gas into a liquid) is condensation. Clouds can be a mass of water droplets and/or ice particles. When the clouds get heavy enough, the water falls back to the ground in the form of rain, snow, or hail. This is precipitation. Plants in our environment contain water in a liquid form. They release water vapour into the atmosphere. When plants do this it is called transpiration. Transpiration is a kind of evaporation. What are clouds? A. Masses of condensed water formed B. Masses of condensed vapours. C. Masses of cotton balls. D. Masses of evaporated water.

the story given below and answer the following question:

Passage A long time ago, when animals could talk, there lived in a forest four wise creatures -a hare, a jackal, an otter and a monkey. They were good friends, and every evening they would sit together in a forest glade to discuss the events of the day, exchange advice and make good resolutions. The hare was the noblest and wisest of the four. He believed in the superiority of men and women, and was always telling his friends tales of human goodness and wisdom. One evening, when the moon rose in the sky, and those days the moon’s face was clear and unmarked, the hare looked up at it carefully and said, “Tomorrow good men will observe a fast, for I can see that it will be the middle of the month. They will eat no food before sunset, and during the day they will give alms to any beggar or holy man who may meet them. Let us promise to do the same. In that way, we can come a little closer to human beings in dignity and respect.” The others agreed, and then went their different ways. Next day, the otter got up, stretched himself, and was preparing to get his breakfast when he remembered the vow he had taken with his friends. “If I keep my word, how hungry I shall be by evening!” he thought. “I’d better make sure that there’s plenty to eat once the fast is over.” He set off towards the river. A fisherman had caught several large fish early that morning, and had buried them in the sand, planning to return for them later. The otter soon smelt them out. “A supper all ready for me,” he said to himself. “But since it’s a holy day, I mustn’t steal.” Instead he called out, “Does anyone own this fish?”

There being no answer, the otter carried the fish off to his home, setting it aside for his evening meal. - Ruskin Bond (from The Hare in the Moon) The hare thought that if the four friends kept a fast and gave alms, _________. A. They would get more food. B. They would come a little closer to human beings C. They would become human beings in next life. D. None of the above.

the story given below and answer the following question:

Passage The Giant had gone to visit his friend, The Cornish Ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. So, every afternoon, on their way back from school, the children used to play in the Giant’s garden. It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there, over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, there were twelve peach trees that in the spring time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. “How happy we are here!” they cried to each other. When the Giant arrived he saw the children playing in the garden. “What are you doing here?” he cried in a very gruff voice and the children raw away. “My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant. “Anyone can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it. but myself.” So he built a high wall all around it, and put up a notice-board saying, TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED He was a very selfish Giant. The poor children now had nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there,” they said to each other. Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head but from the grass, but when it saw the notice- board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. Oscar Wilde Where had the Giant gone? A. To meet his friend the Irish Ogre. B. To meet his friend the Cornish Ogre. C. To meet his friend the Gentle Giant. D. To buy toys for the children.

Passage It was a warm, spring Saturday morning, but that wasn’t the only reason Jim woke up in a good mood. He was going to the nursery with his father. Jim loved gardening, and Mr. Ito’s nursery was Jim’s favourite store.

Jim could see from the parking lot that the flowers and shrubs at the nursery were already in full bloom. There were yellow daffodils and tulips in a range of colors from white to purple so dark they were almost black. Jim loved the bright green of the new leaves on the trees. It had been a long, cold winter, and the flowers cheered him up. Jim’s father rubbed his hands together. “Let’s go do some shopping,” he said. Jim pushed the shopping cart while his father piled things into it. They bought a bag of potting soil. Jim loved the way it smelled. They walked down rows of plants and seedlings, and piled pots into their cart. They bought petunias and geraniums for the hanging baskets they made every year. They bought ferns and flowers for their deck. They bought fertilizer. Jim’s father held up a birdhouse. “Should we get this?” he asked Jim. Jim shook his head. “Let’s make our own,” he said. They bought vegetable seeds for their garden. They got radishes, carrots, zucchini and red beet seeds. They bought trays of young tomato plants and lettuce. “Are you sure we should get lettuce? Jim asked his father. “Remember how the slugs ate it all last year?” His father sighed and nodded. “I’m going to spread sawdust this year. I heard that keeps the slugs away.” After Jim and his father filled their cart, they parked it in the shade and strolled around the nursery looking at all the shrubs and trees. “I think we should plant an apple tree this year,” said Jim. “I agree,” said his father. “There is no room in the car this time, but may be we can come back next week and pick one out.” They paid and drove home, and spent the rest of the day working in the yard. Jim was tired when he went to bed, but he was happy and the yard looked great. He couldn’t wait to eat the vegetables. Who is Mr. Ito? A. Jim B. Jim’s father C. The nursery owner D. Jim’s gardener

the passage and answer the question that follow:

HOW THE CHIPMUNK GOT ITS STRIPES Long ago, the Earth was covered in darkness. None of the creatures living there knew what daylight looked like. One day, all of the animals of the forest gathered together in a clearing. They wondered if it would be better to remain in darkness, or if it would be better to also have light. Deer, Chipmunk, Raccoon, Wolf, Bear, and many other creatures climbed to the top of the highest mountain. The mountain stood so tall that there were no trees on its top, and it was covered only with rocks. Millions of stars blinked in the dark sky overhead. The biggest and most powerful animal in the forest was the bear, and he was the first to reach the mountaintop. Bear stood on the highest peak, looked out over the forest below, and argued for remaining in darkness. He said that the creatures of the forest would be able to sleep better in darkness because there would be no light to keep them awake. Most of the other animals were afraid, and they agreed with Bear. Raccoon said that he did not mind the darkness because he was so smart that he could find plenty of food, even in the dark. Wolf was easy to please, too. She didn’t mind the darkness because she could howl in darkness or in light. But one animal did stand up to the Bear. Chipmunk, the smallest of the animals, argued that it would be better to have both light and dark. Chipmunk was very clever. As Bear continued to argue for darkness, she made many good arguments for light. Slowly, the night passed. Bear grew tired of talking, but Chipmunk chattered on and on, as if she had all of the energy in the world. As the other animals dropped off to sleep, one by one, Chipmunk kept arguing. Finally, the first sunrise ever seen by the animals appeared over the top of the mountain. They woke up and were amazed by what they saw. Chipmunk began to dance from rock to rock. Bear became angry because he didn’t get his way. He roared loudly and ran after Chipmunk. He chased Chipmunk all the way down the mountain. Bear was fast, and he reached out his giant paw to grab Chipmunk. Chipmunk got away, but not before Bear managed to scratch her back with his long claws. And that is why, to this day, you can see stripes on Chipmunk’s back!
