Passage 2  Gardeners  are  being  encouraged  to  grow  striped  flowers  to  encourage  bumblebee  populations,  after  research  suggested  that  the  insects  are  most  attracted  to  them.  Stripes  on  petal  veins  direct  bumblebees  to  the  flower's  "central  landing  platform"  to  gather nectar and pollen. Researchers also found that red flowers were also attractive to  bumblebees.  Bees play a key role in agriculture by pollinating  crops. The scientists say that growing  such  inviting  plants  could  be  a  way  for  people  to  help  stem  what  has  been  called  a  "catastrophic" decline in UK bumblebee populations.  Professor Cathie Martin from John Innes Centre in Norwich said red, and striped flowers  were visited significantly more frequently than white or pink blooms. More flowers were  visited per plant as well, she added.

VII Read the following and answer the questions that follow. Woodcraft, metal and clay products, textiles and jewellery are all displayed at the National Artisan Export exhibition. Here you can see the artisans at work and also buy products directly from them. Most of the artists have come from different parts of the country. However, the artists working on traditional pieces of jewellery are from South India. Gold is the metal that is used most of all but you will also see silver, copper and platinum as well. The artists not only use expensive stones like diamonds but they also use shells and glass. When an artist makes a piece of jewellery, they usually begin with the shape that they work from drawings. READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Mario was not your run-of-the-mill school going teenager. He was just like a boy scout- he had a motto. His motto was ‘Hoard stuff the dirtier the better’. His bedroom was full of curious stuff, but one thing was common to all of it, they were all muddy and dirty. There was a flat bike tyre, a broken badminton racquet, a deflated football tube and even a goldfish bowl with a hole in the bottom. His irritated mother pleaded with him to clean his room, but he stoutly refused to do so ‘never throw anything out you don’t know when it might come in handy’. The same was the case with his backpack. It was filled with broken cables, a magnet, some coloured streamers from an old birthday party, even stale cookies. He often used these things with a good deal of imagination, much to the joy of his friends. He was immensely popular in school because of this. It was this ability of his to make innovative use of even rubbish that made him stand out from his classmates. Tales of Mario’s creativity abounded in the school. “He rescued a stray puppy and fed the poor hungry mongrel some of his stale cookies!”, “He helped the physics teacher recover a lost iron rod with his horseshoe magnet!”, “He managed to console a sobbing toddler by giving her the streamers”.

SECTION-II : READING READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. There he goes again. “You don’t read enough. Your generation has forgotten the art of reading. You are the remote and joy stick crowd. How will your knowledge improve?” And on and on… Yeah, you guessed it right. My dad’s at it again–exhorting me to read books. But I do; only I read e-books. He doesn’t quite get it that they are way better than the old-fashioned paper backs. Why are e-books better? For one thing, they save space. You don’t need that antiquated revolving book case occupying half your house. For another they are environment-friendly. You are not going to be destroying forests, because e-books don’t use any paper at all. But the best reason to use an e-book is because it comes with tips and tools that printed books do not. What do you do when you don’t understand a word in a paper book? Reach for a dictionary, right? But with an e-book, it’s just right-click and click on meaning. Ha-ha, easy, isn’t it? So reading behemoths like War and Peace or Anna Karenina is actually a breeze. So, what exactly is an e-book? An e-book is a book published in digital form consisting of text, pictures or both and readable on computers or other electronic devices.

It occupies some memory if copied on a memory stick, so that little pen

device in your pocket can carry a minimum of a score of books.

FOR QUESTIONS 24 TO 30, READ THE PASSAGE BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. Most major cities in developing countries are under enormous pressure to expand and grow. There are several reasons for this trend. First, having a house of one’s own has become a top priority with the salaried class. Second, with an increase in disposable income, people are willing to buy properties not only for living but for investment as well. Third, there has been a significant growth in young professionals buying houses of their own, adding to the demand. This in turn has spurred developers to keep coming up with newer and more attractive projects all year round.

Begun in 1990, the World Wide Web (www) is among the principal services available on the internet, and has had a major impact on how we use this facility. The Coordination Conference will be held in the principal’s office at 10 am on 28th Jan., 20XX, during which the topics for the declamation will also be disclosed. All housemasters will attend. Good Luck!

In fact, it is not uncommon today to even measure progress in a region or country, using the yardstick of internet access among the population. Its emissions also results from livestock and other agricultural practices, and by the decay of organic wastes in municipal solid wastes landfills. But, did you know that the gas also leaks from seabeds, too? Yes, atleast in some areas on the Atlantic coast of the USA.

Scientists believe that methane stored under the seabed is one of the largest reserves on the planet. They have identified hundreds of ‘seeps’ along the American Atlantic coast— places where gas bubbles out of the sea floor— and believe that “tens of thousands” more seeps to be lying undiscovered. You would be surprised that seabed methane ‘seeps’ are not a new phenomenon. Scientists claim that they have continued for over 1000 years! Some experts believe that climate change could cause huge quantities of methane to be released from the Arctic seabed and the others who believe that evidence, that suggest these underwater emissions have increased. While, it is likely that as global temperatures rise, more methane will be emitted from such seafloor reservoirs, most of the scientists doubt the amount released will be big, when compared to other natural sources. This research has two important implications. First, it leads scientists to wonder where else such leaks maybe going on or may occur in future. In case, these seafloor emissions are significantly high, they could radically change calculations of natural carbon emissions, scientists fear. Secondly, undersea methane seeps could have serious implications for marine life. Since, methane increases the acidity of seawater and reduces its oxygen content of seawater; even small changes in acidity can interfere with the shell formation in small marine creatures, the foundation of ocean food webs. So, any impact on them will, in turn, have indirect effect on other things. So, while the research doesn't suggest a huge increase in methane emissions to the atmosphere, the wider impacts of these findings may have significant implications for the world's oceans nonetheless. For example, the gas originating from these reservoirs could trigger a rat race among oil companies to determine whether they can be tapped for oil and natural gas.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 20 TO 24, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Volunteers Set the Mood of the Games Olympic Gold Medallist Rower Katherine Grainger was born and bred in Glasgow and strongly believes that people have got a great sense of humour. Speaking of the importance of volunteers in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, she says, “I think that a sense of humour is really a huge requirement for a lot of the volunteer roles, especially in sports festivals. I reckon, it is more important than any previous experience of volunteering.” She is very confident that the organisers will get plenty of right people for volunteering that everyone will get a chance to savour Scottish humour. The volunteers she remembers most from London Olympics 2012 were those individuals with their own personalities. “You could never say that the Games Makers were a production line of certain people. They were different ages and from different backgrounds, and they’d all welcome you in a different way,” she says. An interesting incident, she recalls her encounter with a volunteer boy in the London Olympics 2012. When she turned up on the morning of her rowing final, a volunteer welcomed her and other team members and pointing to the chocolate medal in his neck, jokingly commented, ‘Hey everyone, I bet you’re jealous of my gold medal!’ She and her team members could not help smiling. Another thing about the London Olympics 2012 that left her particularly impressed were the long chains of volunteers on the way to and from the stadiums. The way they were high-fiving people, dancing and singing was the most amazing sight. They enhanced the excitement and gaiety of the extravaganza and painted a very positive picture of their country, she recalls. Commenting on the general notion that volunteering may be a thankless job, she says, “Some of the volunteering roles could perhaps have been seen as mundane or not particularly glamorous, but I believe volunteering is a crucial job and that volunteers should be made to feel admired, respected and loved. That would make them even happier to be doing those roles and rub off the feel-good spirit on everyone else.” “Volunteers can really set the mood of the Games. If you get it right, people arrive and leave happy,” she says. 20. What kind of people, according to Katherine, are just right for volunteering? A. People who were born in Glasgow. B. People who can make others laugh. C. People who have experience of volunteering. D. People who understand Scottish humour. 21. A quality of the volunteers of London Olympics 2012 does Katherine remember most is the . A. similarities in their personalities and behaviour

FOR QUESTIONS 25 TO 29, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. 16-Feet Waves-Where There Was Once Only Ice! i. National Geographic correspondent Jane J. Lee in a recent article describes how reduced sea ice has allowed the build-up of huge waves in the Beaufort Sea. She talks of sea waves as high as 16-feet in the Arctic Ocean where there was once only ice. Her fear is that because wave action breaks up sea ice, allowing more sunlight to warm the ocean, can trigger a cycle that leads to even less ice, more wind, and higher waves. ii. According to Jane, scientists had hitherto never measured waves in the Beaufort Sea, an area north of Alaska because of the perpetual sheet of ice that prevented their formation. But, much of the region, she says, is now ice-free by September, and researchers have, as a result, been able to anchor a sensor to measure wave heights in the central Beaufort Sea in 2012. iii. An alarming point that Jane raises is that if winds are free to blow for a longer distance over the open ocean, they can produce higher and higher waves. Sea ice restricts how far winds can blow, thus limits the formation of waves. The loss of this cover is, therefore, a cause of great concern. iv. Jane talks of how scientists predict that in future larger waves may be rising, if the seasonal ice cover in the Arctic, continues to diminish. v. If that happens, it will have serious implications for the world—shorelines may be getting hit with larger and larger waves, and could erode rapidly. Moreover, reduced ice cover could also alter the amount of carbon dioxide being exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean. As a result, the Arctic may be releasing more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. vi. The amount of open water, Jane says, varies annually in the Beaufort. There is virtually no open water in April, when sea ice is at its maximum, but during sea ice minimums in September, it spreads over an area of 621 miles (1,000 kilometres). Although, the Arctic has been steadily losing its sea ice cover since the late 1970s that loss was particularly quick in 2002. The 16-feet waves the scientists’ instrument picked up occurred during a powerful storm on September 18, 2012. 25. What gave rise to waves in the Beaufort Sea?

A. B. C. D.

Scientific studies going on there. Presence of gentle winds in the area. Less sea ice due to warmer climate. A shorter summer season.

26. Until recently scientists had not measured the sea waves in the Beaufort Sea because of . A. its ice-free summers B. its permanent ice-cover C. their failure to deploy sensors there D. the particularly bad weather there
