Hyphothetical constructions  Wish  if only  would rather / I would would prefer  it’s time / it’s high time  time   as if / as though

 

Wish 

Wish + past tense ( the situation is in the present)

 – II wish I had a motorbike = imi doresc sa am o  –  motocicleta  wish + past perfect (the situation is in the past)  – I wish I hadn’t seen him = imi imi doresc sa nu il fi vazut 

wish + would + verb (the situation is in the future)

 – II wish it would stop raining  –  » would is used when the the speaker speaker wants wants somebody or something else to change or it is used to describe an annoying habit

 

I’d rather / I’d prefer  prefer 

 I’d

rather + past tense (the situation is in the  present)  –I’d  – I’d rather you didn’t smoke in here  here

rather + past perfect (the situation is in the past)  –I’d  – I’d rather you had come  come 

 

If only  If only + past tense (present situation)  – if only she could stay ( but she can’t)  can’t)

It’s time / it’s high time  time   They are followed by past simple or

continuous (the situation is in the present)  – it’s time we left  left

 As if / As though   As if + past tense (present situation - unreal) unreal)  – he acts as if he were the boss boss ( he isn’t)  isn’t) 



as if + past perfect (past situation - unreal) unreal)  – I feel as if a train train had hit me (it hadn’t) hadn’t) 



as if + present tense ( present situation - real real))  –  you  –   you look as as if you are having having second thoughts thoughts (true - you are) are)
