With kids from different countries all playing the same game, how are differences in language dealt with? Jon says the Academy is made up of more than 30% Japanese children, some of who speak English fluently but many of who speak little or no English. “After a few weeks with us, their English will have improved demonstrably,” Jon explains. “A big reason for this is that the kids are enjoying themselves while in an English-speaking environment. The fact that English is not their first language does not inhibit their ability to be taught football. Japanese parents have been quick to realize that BFA is a far more economical and healthy option to, for example, juku (cram school) — the kids are out in the fresh air, getting exercise, mixing with kids from every corner of the globe and learning some English at the same time.” ども

While there is always a lot of positive yelling and screaming on the pitch, much of the genuine feedback is received when a child has left the country. “It’s really moving to hear that something you’ve worked hard to create has touched and benefited a young life,” Jon says. “A lot of the time we receive e-mails from parents who have left Japan saying how BFA really enhanced their family’s experience of Japan.” げん き

The biggest issue BFA faces is securing new locations. Despite Japan co-hosting the Football World Cup in 2002, Jon believes the nation’s grassroots football infrastructure is years behind the West. “Open spaces, let alone football fields are very hard to come by,” he says. “We work closely with private organizations such as international schools, as securing public venues is almost impossible with lengthy registration processes and lottery systems with no guarantee of success.” ちょくめん

This exhibition commemorates the 550th anniversary of Edo castle, built in 1457 by OOTA Doukan. Later it became the residence of the TOKUGAWA Shougunate and was the political center of Japan for 260 years as well as being the symbol of Edo, one of the largest cities in the world at the time. Now, the present Emperor lives on this site. Approximately 250 items will be on display including paintings on beautiful folded screens, a picture scroll, a construction planning map, a large-scale model, and many other interesting items that will give you a full picture of Edo castle. ど じょう

A daruma doll is an ornament shaped like egg with a human face and no hands or legs. The daruma doll is made of paper and painted red. Its base is designed to be heavy so that it can sit upright if it is pushed over. The daruma doll is supposed to signify that you can get up again even if you fail, and is regarded as a good luck charm. This memorial service is a traditional event where people offer thanks for the old doll that they kept for a year, and while burning it, pray for the wellbeing of their families, for business prosperity, and hold a mass. They then buy a new doll. It is a spectacular sight to see a solemn mass involving the burning of some tens of thousands of daruma dolls. A daruma fair and bean throwing event is also held. Held at Nishiarai Taishi temple (Tokyo) in February 3.

A visual magazine called “Weekly Artist Japan Revision” will be on sale from January 9 at book stores throughout the nation. One of the magazine’s key features is how the editors select one world famous Japanese art master in each edition and introduce his life, style, works, tips about how to review them, and other information. In their first issue KATSUSHIKA Hokusai, a Ukiyoe artist in the Edo era who greatly influenced French artists such as van GOGH, is introduced. After the first issue, a broad line-up of artists from many different fields will be featured including YOKOYAMA Taikan, HIGASHIYAMA Kaii, OGATA Kourin, TOSHUSAI Sharaku, and others. First issue: ¥290. Second and later issues: ¥560.

“Stories in Voice” is a series of old, sweet and famous stories that have been narrated and put to music. (Produced by Ham Company). This time three CDs have been released: “Alladin and the magic lamp/The red shoes,” “The flying carpet/Nobody’s boy” and “A little princess/The blue bird.” These stories can be used for “good taste” education for children who do not like reading books. Since these books do not have any pictures, they use other effects to cultivate children’s imaginations and to activate the right sides of their brains. Released by Sony Music Distribution.

There are 50 syllables in the Japanese language but each personified character insists “I am the most important character.” The small character “tsu,” which is not pronounced, is fooled by the other characters. As the “tsu” thought that he was unnecessary, he left the fifty syllable village. Then, Japanese language descended into great chaos so that hardly anyone could make themselves understood. This book, created in fable style, hints that everyone has their own role and is very important. The theme is also related to the current bullying problem. A boy was asked to pay 20,000 yen in interest for 500 yen that he was alleged to have borrowed. Bullying among children imitates bullying among adults. Author: You know that a huge number of people in the world do not have enough food to eat? Even if a hungry person steals a piece of bread in order to survive from a household that has too much food, he will be branded a criminal. Those who drove those poor people into their situation are not punished; on the contrary they are often the ones who punish others. If the weak resist by using violence, they will be labeled as traitors and marginalized by the authorities. So, those people who can find no way to escape choose suicide as a way to free themselves. Bullying has the same basis as this. You know, the number of suicides in Japan has exceeded 30,000 for many years now. Nowadays, not only adults are killing themselves, but also children. じゃくしゃ

Author: As the proverb “The cornered mouse attacking the cat” says, people who are driven into a corner rise and fight at the risk of their lives. But people in authority are wily old foxes. CIA: How do you think bullying can be stopped? Author: Stronger people justify their power and step on the weak, and this makes them feel satisfied with their power. For them, the existence of bullying targets adds to their enjoyment. No students can stand up against the head bullies. Japanese behave in a very ordered way Many foreigners mention the good behavior of Japanese as one of the things that surprises them the most after coming to Japan. Foreigners are surprised that Japanese walk in an orderly manner in Japan’s busy and crowded cities. They are also impressed to see Japanese forming lines — even when they were receiving relief supplies directly after the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. Japanese, who essentially all belong to the same racial group, exhibit a particular trait in that they all tend to move in the same direction. In other words, they are good at exhibiting group behavior.

“Yarase” refers to an action in which people behave in a seemingly natural way in line with a previously explained plan. It is often seen in documentary film making. “Sakura” refers to people who are asked by a leader to applaud and give verbal approvals of a speaker’s words while pretending to be ordinary meeting participants. The meaning of this word seems to come from the word “Sakura” (cherry blossom), which bloom in a showy fashion and then very quickly vanish. Those who form queues in front of shops on opening days are also called “Sakura.”

Many citizens were astonished to learn the almost unbelievable fact that their taxes had been used to pay ¥40,000 per person per day to those who guided Cabinet ministers to the hall, and ¥15,000 per person per day to those who simply pushed elevator buttons. This will become one of the notorious “Dangou” (pre-set plots) that prevailed in Japanese society.

Japanese do not talk loudly on trains partly because this might also bother others. You will see many passengers sleeping and some women putting on their make-up. Each train car has priority seats that have different colors from other seats. These seats are for the elderly, handicapped, and pregnant women to sit on. You may sit on these seats, but if you see one of the above-mentioned people coming, you should offer them the seat immediately.

During the morning and evening rush hours, trains are jampacked with passengers. Since many peoples’ bodies are in close contact inside the train, molesting (men touching women’s bodies) often occurs. Every day an announcement is aired in trains urging passengers who see molesters or who are molested themselves to report such incidents to station staff. Nowadays, women-only coaches are included in many trains in the mornings and evenings.

Japanese trains run as scheduled. If they are delayed due to an accident, many railway companies distribute a delay certificate at the station. When you hand this certificate to your company, it will normally be treated as if you had come to the office on time. If you leave your belongings on the train, station staff will keep them in their lost and found office. In Japan, there is a very good chance that lost property will be found, therefore you should promptly talk to station staff as soon as you notice you have lost something.

Ozaki was born in Sagamihara city, Kanagawa, and died at the age of 95. He had his own philosophies: “the older a man becomes, the more he can increase his knowledge and experience. So, a man can start a great business or have great insight just before he dies,” and “The judgment of a good nation or a bad nation depends on whether she can increase or decrease the happiness of the majority of their people.” Ozaki is called the “God of constitutionalism,” or the “Father of parliamentary government.”

Since the second half of the last century, however, a new form called Gogyohka (literally “five-line verse”) has been quietly on the rise. Next big goal is to make Gogyohka into a global literary movement Having initially been scoffed at by his Tanka-writing colleagues, Kusakabe decided to devote his life to making Gogyohka a literary movement in Japan. After a three-year stint at the Yomiuri Shimbun (newspaper) he left in 1964 to pursue his literary ambitions, publishing numerous poetry periodicals and collections of verse. He realized, however, that it would take time for people to accept the Gogyohka form, so without any fanfare he gradually started to introduce Gogyohka poems into his collections of works and quietly gauged the reaction. In 1971 an anthology of his works entitled Hontouni Ai Shiteitara (If You Really Loved Me) sold over 100,000 copies. His next big goal is to make Gogyohka into a global literary movement. “All languages share an inherent quality, the words are a form of breath,” Kusakabe writes in the brief introduction to Gogyohka on his website. This realization first came about while he was tinkering with verses written by SHAKESPEARE. However, the longer she spent with Katherine, the more her worry faded. In 2003, Yasuko resigned from her company, flew to Hawaii and married John in a very simple wedding ceremony on the beach.

At present, Mr. and Mrs. Kitchen run an international marriage service called “Aloha • Partners” on Hawaii Island. “I feel so much responsibility for my job since my work might change the life of our clients, but I am content with this challenge. Some said that they were encouraged by hearing my experience and some made up their minds to step forward after talking with us. Their positive attitudes encourage me,” smiles Yasuko.

Dogs that are apparently stray or abandoned are often brought to my police station. Besides dogs, other animals are also sometimes brought to the station. In the case of dogs, instead of sending them immediately to a public health center dog shelter where they are killed, we usually keep them for a week or two. My boss likes dogs and we take care of them until we find someone who wants to keep them. This sometimes takes some months.

In Japan, seasons and dishes are closely linked. I like that for most of the dishes I learn how to cook, the base ingredients are almost always the same: Dashi stock, or shoyu, and mirin. Since Japanese dishes don’t require too much preparation, so I can enjoy cooking.

Taking Tokyo trains to work during the morning rush hour is something I’ve gotten used to, but I still hate being packed in a train and feeling like a sardine in a can. Many Japanese people love to drink, but aren’t really good at drinking. I see many people throwing up.

The ocean around Okinawa is well known worldwide for its beauty. In this aquarium in Okinawa, the conditions for the resident sea life are kept as close as possible to those in the ocean.
