The Akihabara district in Tokyo is well known as being the city’s “electric town,” but recently it has gained a name as a place for otaku (obsessive hobbyists), and in March 2006, the Tokyo Anime Center total portal facility for Japanese animation was established. This Center is used to distribute the latest animation information to creators, fans and related business industries in four languages: Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. Yuma began reviewing his future as at that point he had no more reason to do computer work. In 2003, when he was traveling in Mexico, he met a Japanese couple on their honeymoon. “They were traveling the world with 1.5 million yen each. Hearing that I thought I could also make it.” So, he saved 4.2 million yen in a travel fund over three years. し

Those that do not bid at this time submit a bid price which is very different from the “proper bidding price.” This practice is the well-known “dangou.” Bureaucrats seem to lack awareness that this is a crime.

In reality, enterprises that are not cooperative in this scheme are ousted from bidding processes for public undertakings.

Coming from their conceit, the bureaucrats’ awareness of the similarity between the privileged classes and the bureaucracy in socialist countries was born. was taken the very day we met, but he didn’t make a move,” says Andrea, a German woman now living in Tokyo, about the first time she met her Japanese husband Toru. “After we got married he told me that he had been feeling ‘something,’ too, but was not sure how to show it.” The pair began dating in 1997, a year after they first met following Andrea’s transfer by her company from Hamburg to Osaka, and Toru’s transfer by his company from Tokyo to Osaka. “The company (Panalpina) I worked for was a client for my husband’s company (Cathay Pacific Airways) and that is how we met.” The couple married in 1998. わたし

Andrea, like many gaikokujin living in Japan, is facing difficulties that many other foreigners will be able to identify with. “Firstly, for me it is hard to see that the concept of ‘straight forward’ does not work too well in Japan, and it causes stress,” she says. “Secondly, the mindset of group activity. Even in the daycare center the other Japanese mothers form a group and you have to work hard at becoming ‘one of them’ and then staying in this group. Once you are out, it gets hard to gather small but important pieces of information about the daycare itself or the curriculum, and little by little your kid becomes isolated. In order to stay in the group, you have to attend every activity planned and make sure to keep being one of them. That is tiring!” に

Andrea makes an interesting point when she says a third challenge of living in Japan is to become strong enough to say, “You are doing it your way but I am doing it my way, and both our ways are okay.” “I feel in Germany there is so much individuality anyway, but here in Japan things are pretty uniform and to do something different from the masses is tough at times.” Another problem she faces is offending Japanese people without being aware of it because she does not use the right keigo (honorific expression). “Generally speaking, the difficulties I have with life in Japan will also become Toru’s problems because he is the one who has to help me out!” ど

Another benefit that is voiced by many in international relationships, is that there is never any idle moment. “It never gets boring,” Andrea says. “There are so many ongoing issues on a daily basis where I as a foreigner in Japan or he as a Japanese married to a foreigner have to grow — and that is a nice challenge! And the best thing is that this will never change for I will always be a foreigner in Japan. Apart from that there is the chance to live in one house with two cultures. We can take the best from both of them!” おお

On May 16, 2005, the revised Immigration Law was implemented which bought about, Answe among other things, significant changes to the refugee recognition system. Applicants should be foreigners who want to be recognized as refugees. Interested persons should ask for an application form from their nearest Immigration office. The documents required are as follows: Application form, data certifying that you are a refugee (on a written satatement), photo, passport (or Certificate of Eligibility), Certificate of Alien Registration (if you possess one), temporary landing permission. The real pleasure of using the air-soft sword is the “paching” sound heard when a sword hits the opponent. The inexpressibly exhilarating sound echoes around the hall and yet, the one who is hit feels almost no pain at all as the core of the swords contain nothing but air. Spochan was launched by Mr. TANABE Tetsundo, director of International Sports Chanbara Association in 1971 as an art of self-defense and a method to protect oneself. Mr. Tanabe enjoyed chanbara as a child, but his real motivation was stoked when he was a director of his older brother’s security company and started to train their employees in the art of kendo. げん

After a while, children near the exercise hall started joining the martial arts school and Mr. Tanabe began creating enjoyable chanbara lessons for them. Then, he hosted competitions, which gradually became larger until they evolved into the Japan Championship that began to be held later. So far, they have hosted 31 Japan Championships, and chanbara is becoming more popular every year in Japan as well as overseas. Matches can be fought using a number of variations: “Taisen” which is fought one against one, “ransen” which is fought between an unequal number of people such as one against three, and “Kassen” which is a battle fought between groups such as 30 against 30. Most martial arts require many drills and training in order to improve, many of which become a burden. In contrast, spochan is a sport that you can enjoy from the very beginning. However, related to Bushido (samurai spirit) and the essence of chivalry, spochan respects fair play. “I fundamentally don’t think judges are necessary in spochan,” says Mr. Tanabe. “It is ideal that players make judgments by themselves, honestly admitting defeat when appropriate.” ぶ じゅつ

Interestingly, there are increasing numbers of events taking place in Japan in which the challenge is to build a rocket out of pet bottles and fly them over the longest distance. Many people will wonder whether pet bottles can fly, but they do — easily — usually over 100 meters. Children who see them often shout for joy, bringing joy to their parents. う ちゅう

Mr. YAMAZAKI Akira, director of the Pet Bottle Craft Association, Japan, explains, “the principle is the same as that for space rockets using only the principal of action and reaction. These rockets are propelled by the power created from a reaction in which air expels water. Simply put, they fly using the same principle as a balloon when the air is released.” This idea is believed to have come from Germany before being passed on to NASA and then onto Japan about 40 years ago.
