Every year, NHK broadcasts TV a year-long history drama that is shown on TV once a week. The 2006 story will be a drama based on “Komyo ga Tsuji,” a novel written by SHIBA Ryotaro, a leading Japanese historical novelist. The story is about the heroine Chiyo, the wife of YAMAUCHI Kazutoyo, who was promoted to be lord of Tosa (present-day Kochi prefecture) and served Japan’s three most famous great military commanders; ODA Nobunaga, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi and TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. Even now, a good wife and wise mother is often called “Wife of Yamauchi Kazutoyo.” れき

「明治神宮」の初詣 In Tokyo, New Year is characterized by the visitors at Meiji Shrine. This shrine always attracts the greatest number of visitors of any shrine in Japan. Meiji shrine, where the Emperor Meiji, who brought Japan out of the Samurai era as a modern nation, and Empress Shoken are enshrined, was built in 1920. Emperor Meiji was enthroned at the age of 16 and soon after the Meiji Restoration broke out and led Japan to become a modern country with a new government which carried out reforms. He is known as an Emperor who enjoyed humor and as a master of 31-syllable Japanese poems. As the shrine is surrounded by forest, the inner area of the shrine is so quiet (except on New Years holidays) that you will not even feel you are in Tokyo. とうきょう

How did she learn Japanese? “I had some basic lessons in my first year here, then for the next three years I found a karaoke bar where no one spoke English, and I went 3~4 times a week with a notebook and dictionary. The master of the bar had been an enka singer, so I learned enka from him, copying every song down in romaji, and learned Japanese by talking with him and the other customers and through the songs.
