Gigantic dinosaurs including “Supersaurs,” some of the largest dinosaurs in the world, are on display at the Gigantic Dinosaur Expo 2006. Over 240 specimens, the largest collection in Japan, will be on show. Featuring a computer graphic-rich film showing a realistic reconstruction of these creatures, the secrets of their diverse evolution and surroundings of their era will be disclosed.      



 Tokyo Tower is in the spotlight as a sightseeing spot, partly thanks to Lily Franky’s best selling book “Tokyo Tower.” Now, at the second floor “foot town” of Tokyo Tower, popular portrait artists are already gathering in an event called “Tokyo Tower Portrait Art Street.” Their portrait styles vary between sketches, pastels and deformed images. Portrait prices depend on the drawing style, but they vary between  ¥1,500 and ¥2,000. Time for your portrait to be produced is 10~15 minutes. Held until June 30th. On the 3rd floor you can see the “Wax museum” and the “Guinness World Record Museum Tokyo.” (Admission fee required.)

A concert of wonderful, condensed ballet will be performed by the Leningrad National Ballet. The world of beautiful Russian ballet performed by dancers raised in St. Petersburg, a capital of art, will be on stage in the Kanto and other areas. The highlights of many of the most popular works including “Swan Lake,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Don Quixote” will be performed. Anyone over 4 years old can attend. The biggest international basketball event “FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2006” will be held in Japan from August 19th to September 3rd. The championship is held every four years and this year’s event is the 15th event, with 24 countries participating. Events featuring some of the world’s top players will be held as group games in 4 locations: Sapporo, Sendai, Hamamatsu and Hiroshima. The final round will be held in the Saitama Super Arena. Japanese take more interest in the NBA than Japanese basketball league. In the U.S.A., basketball is as popular as American football and baseball. There are 212 countries and regions in the FIBA.

KAKURA Tenshin (1862~1913), an artist and philosopher who lived in the Meiji Era, preached to people that “Asia is one.” In fact, Asia is large. It covers area from Japan in the east to the Middle East in the west, and many different races and cultures coexist side by side. The oriental way of thinking may be the factor in common to unite the continent. Ramezani MOHAMMAD, an Iranian businessman in Japan, has a sense of affinity to Japan, a nation that had achieved rapid development among Asian countries after World War 2. 

Ramezani studied at Tehran University and came to Japan 14 years ago. After he arrived in Japan, he worked at a factory and a building renovation company as he could not speak  Japanese. However, as Japan’s bubble economy collapsed, his company went bankrupt and he did not receive payments he was due. After that he established a building renovation company by himself and discovered the great importance of  language and trust in business.

 



 Now he is succeeding in the manufacturing and sales of the highest class soap made of  rose and herbs. It all happened by chance when he brought herb soap as a souvenir from Iran. Japanese took interest in it

 

and wanted to buy it. “In Japan, preservatives are used in many products, so they must have found organic products good,” says Ramezani. 

 

Two years ago a chance to take a further step arose. As he was trusted by the president of an aesthetic saloon who was a client of his, Ramezani was asked to become the president of her company. 







 Ramezani, whose motto is “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” associates mostly with Japanese people. He speaks very highly of Japanese who are exactly the same as he imagined they would be - kind and able to withstand any difficulties. On the other hand, he worries that Japanese consume medicine too readily and are indifferent to additives in foods. His dream is to go around the world and see many things of  excellence in four or five year’s time.

 

Is the World Cup a Hazardous Event!? While people all around the world are catching World Cup fever, there are some organizations that are opposing the event. One of them is the  Nationalism Study Institute. Hiragana Times CIA interviewed Mr. Patrick   HEART, the headquarters’ headquarters’ director in Switzerland. 





Essentially, sports are events that promote peace, but  ironically they can become a tool to raise hatred. What we are  concerned about is those who abuse nationalism. Hooligans  are one such group. try’s teams in the World Cup. There are very few sports events besides the football World Cup and the Olympics where people of various nations become united. However, the enhancement of nationalism can create very dangerous relationships between nations. 







Many Japanese have been aware that the reason Japan entered the Pacific War was due greatly to the patriotic education of the people. And until recently discussions about patriotism have been taboo as they are thought to inspire racism. The Japan Teachers Union has been strongly against the raising of the national flag “ Hinomaru ” (Rising Sun) and the singing of the national anthem “ Kimigayo ” (Imperial Reign). As a result, patriotic education has not been practiced except in a small number of schools.

 

Some people say that “Kimigayo ” also reminds people of  militarism. But the French national anthem “La Marseillaise” is a military song and there are many nations that use a military song as their national anthem. So, some people say Kimigayo does not especially represent militarism. However, in Japan’s case, the history of the country’s invasion of other Asian nations is still casting a dark shadow on the “ Hinomaru” and “Kimigayo.”





   

However, the patriotic British song “God Save the Queen” acknowledged as that country’s national anthem, is also highly respectful of the Queen. There are people who say that “ Kimigayo ” should not be the one to be criticized when compared to the British anthem. In fact, in the Meiji era when the lyrics were written, most of Japan’s modernization was modeled on Britain’s, then the world’s greatest empire. It is believed that Japan’s anthem was subsequently modeled from the British anthem.

   



Many people, especially students, wish to have a homestay experience in order to learn more about the Japanese way of  life. But in Japan, the homestay system is not as developed as it is in western countries. Homestays in Japan are usually limited to short stays and hosted by international exchange groups, which may make you think they are difficult to find. You order these services at your local branch office. Your landlord or house manager should have more information about this. Fees for these services are charged monthly. The payment is either made by an automatic withdrawal from your account or at a bank or convenience store.

One of  them was AMAKUSA Shiro, who launched the Shimabara (Kyushuu) Rebellion in medieval times. He is well-known among Japanese as a good-looking young man whose life

ended in tragedy. Another is INOUE Denzo (1854~1918) and others who caused the Chichibu Incident in modern times. However, few people know about Denzo. The background of  the incidents has a lot in common with the present day world.



In 2004, a movie directed by KAMIYAMA Seijiro called “Kusa no ran” (“Grassroot Rebellion”), in which the main character was Denzo, was shown. It was created for the 120th anniversary of the Chichibu Incident. The catch copy was “There were great guys in Japan 120 years ago.” In 1918, an elderly dying man disclosed to his family that his real name was INOUE Denzo and that he was one of the leaders of the Chichibu Incident and had been sentenced to death.





The Chichibu region in Saitama prefecture is a mountainous area, where peasants lived raising silkworms. They took  out loans from moneylenders on account of their sales of raw silk every year and used it to purchase food. But, due to the



     

government’s deflationary policy, the price of raw silk  dropped sharply, taxes were increased, and they had to depend more on loans from moneylenders. Many peasants went bankrupt due to the unjustly high interest rates being charged, and their lands, which had been passed down from their ancestors, were taken away.

   

At this time the democratic movement was becoming active and speeches were often held at many different locations. The Liberal Party appealed that farmers’ poverty was caused by the government’s policy of increasing wealth and military power. Denzo and his group subsequently organized the Poverty Party (Konmin-tou). In order to rescue peasants, the party petitioned the government and moneylenders for a 10 year halt of loan repayments and then 40 more years of regular repayments, in addition to reduced taxes. However, the government did not accept their requests. Moreover, moneylenders rejected it and in an opposing move, began harshly collecting loans. The Poverty Party thought there was no way out except to bring down the government. On 1st November 1884, 3,000 concerned people — including Denzo — led by TASHIRO Eisuke gathered in a shrine compound. The Poverty Party army set their own military rules and strictly warned the army not to harm citizens. However, some people formed a mob and destroyed or set fire to moneylenders’ houses. At one time, they occupied the town hall and drove the regiment of military police out, but the Poverty Party army, which had fewer soldiers, was defeated in later battles.

 









The number of people involved in the revolts was said to have been 10,000. Four thousand were given a guilty verdict and seven leaders were given the death penalty. Denzo, who escaped to Hokkaido, was one of them. Then the government suppressed information about this resistance. However, it was proved by the will of Denzo, who had remained hidden for 30 years, that those involved were not rioters, but devoted fighters for the rights of the weak.







The endings of Japanese sentences make the Japanese lan       guage very versatile. For example, “will” can be translated as   “deshou,” “darou,” “tsumorida,” “yoteidesu,” etc. Perhaps this  is making Japanese more difficult to understand. But it also  makes it possible to express subtle nuances to other people  without placing emphasis on intonation or facial expression. 





 When Japanese is written, the outstanding features of the language become clear. There are basically two different  writing styles in the Japanese language. The first is sentences   ending in “desu” and “masu.” The other is sentences ending in   “de aru.” You choose one of these when you write. “Desu”/        “masu” gives a soft and feminine impression. While “de aru”  gives a masculine and positive impression.      

 

It is not only sentence endings that enrich the Japanese vocabulary. Japanese has many words for an article. For example, “you.” In English “you” is generally used to signify anyone, but in Japanese there are many words for “you,” such as “anata,” “kimi,” “omae,” “kisama” “onushi,” etc. The word used depends on the relationship between the speaker and the listener. There are big differences in nuance between these words.

 

Since Japanese has an abundant vocabulary, it becomes possible to translate English into Japanese using different tones. Some years ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translated diplomatic English text into Japanese using softer sentences with the aim of making it easily acceptable by the people, and it became an issue. Japanese is a deep language. In other words, it is a very intelligent and also very enjoyable language to use.









t about 2:00am on March 1, 2006, James, an American living and working as an English language teacher and his Japanese wife Sachiko were outside on the street near their apartment building in Osaka. That night Sachiko had been out having dinner with her former co-workers. When she arrived home, she thought James was asleep and went out again to go to the corner convenience store to buy some food. James followed her outside as he was aware that that part of Osaka wasn’t safe late at night.  

  









While Sachiko was telling James where she was going, approximately six policemen arrived in two police cars, and two more police were on foot running towards them. “So a total of eight police suddenly surrounded us,” James recalled. 







   James says he believes the large height difference between them (he has a large build and is 6’3”) added to the fact that they were new to the neighborhood and were speaking in English outside at such an early hour was bound to catch attention, and his assumption is that someone called the police.  



 







James points out that he had not been drinking or arguing and was not acting in a loud or noisy manner. “I never provoked the police at any time,” he says. “I was calm and polite to them. I was never disrespectful to them.” James was then forced into a police car and the couple were taken to the “T” police station. 





The police refused his request for an English interpreter. “They attacked me and were beating, hitting, and kicking me all over my body. They rammed my head into the concrete wall, kicked my back and punched my neck and head area numerous times. Two of them then held me against the wall, while another one began choking my neck with my own necktie. I screamed for help.”  

I thought that they were going to kill me “They all threw me down hard on the floor, and then ordered me to get up and sit on a chair. I was already in great pain all over my body. I held up my hand, and said ‘please help me stand up.’ One of the policeman was just shaking and spitting at me like a crazy person. He became angrier and then he pulled me up by the hair. He then began to hit the back of my head with his fist again. He kept on repeating ‘this is Japanese police system,’ at the same time he was yelling this and laughing at me, I gave up all hope. I thought that they were going to kill me. Everything around me became black, I vomited and felt nausea, experienced double-vision and coughed up blood. I cried for a doctor and a hospital, but they refused my emergency request.” 

     Did the couple receive an explanation as to why they had been taken into custody? “Sachiko was told that this was just the Japanese police system,” James says. “My wife and I both tried to explain, but they ignored our explanations. This is Japan, and here you are a suspect for the simple fact that you are a non-Japanese. And you are guilty until proven innocent. They can even hold you for three days without even letting you call a lawyer, and they can also lock you up for 23 days without even charging you with a crime.”







 





  To try to redress the situation, the couple has reported the events to the American Consulate, Amnesty International, the United Nations and the Osaka Prefectural Government’s Human Rights department, all of  which are monitoring and investigating the case. “It has also been exposed that this same ‘T’ police station has been investigated for similar human rights abuse and violence toward other non-Japanese citizens in the past.” James says. 



 

James says he asked for the policemen’s names and police ID badge numbers, but they all refused to tell him. “They never even apologized to me, told me my rights, what I was charged with, and they finally never even arrested me. And yet they forcefully detained me and beat me for three hours. They simply tossed us out of the police station at about 5am. I have been told by numerous organizations that this is a clear violation of the penal code Articles 194 and 195.”   

The best aspect about being in an international relationship is living in two countries!

      

 







But the couple’s real adventure began while they were living in Cincinnati. “I was playing the bass in my Dad’s swing band and working parttime as a cook,” J.J. recalls. “The swing trend crashed and a lot of musicians were out of  work. I wasn’t really interested in it anyhow and neither her nor I wanted to stay in Cincinnati, so we packed up and loaded the van with all of our worldly possessions — including our cats — and left for Austin, Texas. We settled there and I cut my first solo album.”

.J. and Ruriko VICKER, an American & Japanese couple living in Tokyo, met in 1989 in a way not uncommon in Japan when J.J. was teaching English and Ruriko was a student of his. “That part is pretty stereotypical,” he says. “Except I’m a musician and she was a 16-yearold rock’n roller. We hit it off in a way that diverges from the stereotypical at this point. We lost contact, I went back to the States, and years later she looked me up and came to visit me.” The couple had been close friends before, but when Ruriko came to visit Cincinnati, “something clicked” and the couple was eventually married in 1999 in Kentucky.  







   However, when the dot-com bubble burst, the local economy also crashed, so Ruriko and J.J. decided to move to Phoenix, where he worked for a while before they moved up to Las Vegas. “I had an after-hours gig at a Blues lounge as

Well, her mom had a brain tumor at the time and her judgement was more than questionable.”

















Interestingly, the couple has strong personality difference. “We’re both headstrong; we set out to do something and that’s the end of the discussion,” says. J.J. “The biggest most fundamental difference is our personal philosophies. She sees herself as a victim of  circumstances, you take whatever life hands you and that’s that. I sharply disagree; your life is what you make it. Your thoughts, actions and habits form your experience. I believe there are no victims in this world.”   







One day about 10 days later, I had a call from my friend to say that his son had returned. He said his son had been surprisingly restrained on molesting charges and that his son had denied the charges. However, it seemed that he had resolved the situation with a private settlement. Anyway my friend and his wife

This spring, a son of my friend disappeared suddenly after he left for his company in the morning. As he did not appear at his office, one of his colleagues called my friend, who realized that his son had been involved in an incident. My friend asked at the train station whether his son had got on the usual train. It became clear — thanks to a video tape — that he took  the train, but he was not shown disembarking in any images at the station he usually gets off at. 





 











The judge decided the woman’s testimony was reliable. Many men are now afraid to be charged as a molester with only the woman’s testimony. 

The other day when I had a chance to look at my friend’s foreign registration card, I noticed that the design of the card was different from mine. What has happened to them? Also, please advise me about foreign registration.

The foreign registration card was changed from June lst, 2005. Recently, cases in which these cards have been forged with the help of   Ans  w    e    a computer, have increased, and therefore the r      Ministry of Justice changed the design of the card to prevent it from being copied or forged. The size of the card and range of registered items remain the same. This procedure is carried out at the foreign registration counter of your local government office, however the card is produced at the Immigration Office. 

 

The “Mona Lisa,” the most famous picture in the world, was painted by Leonardo as everyone knows. Her mysterious smile is too famous, but did you know that Leonardo did not use an outline to draw the Mona Lisa? 













  Japanese-style painting is on the other extreme of art with the skill of Leonardo used to make it real. It is well known that ukiyoe, in which the customs and fashions of the Edo period (1603~1867) were drawn, had a great influence on impressionist artists such as van GOGH, CEZANCE and MONET. In traditional Japanese pictures, the outline is said to be vital. So-called “Beautiful women pictures” were drawn with beautiful outlines and this skill has carried through to the present.    

Goyoh was allowed to be a disciple of Shinsui and boarded at his master’s home. “My master was my absolute existence and his studio was everything,” Goyoh recalls. 

 In Japanese art, women wearing kimono are often featured. Goyoh likes to draw maiko, who are teenagers at the stage before they become a geisha who entertains guests at banquets. He is not fond of drawing geisha. He likes the freshness and sincerity of maiko. When he has a favorite model, he says it is easier to draw and he unconsciously transforms her into his ideal woman.   

“I learnt that the beauty of beautiful women pictures lies in the outline. In the case of oil paintings, you can draw over the outline, but you cannot do this in Japanese-style paintings as the lines are drawn with one stroke. I draw while holding my breath.” He says the most important lines are the face, hands and body line. He imagines how he will draw before starting. Delicate colors are created by combining paints.

“There are two types of artists. One expresses himself keeping to tradition, and the other expresses himself disregarding tradition and creating something new. I am the former.” Goyoh holds onto the traditional skills with pride and confidence and draws beautiful women pictures. Shinsui had many distinguished apprentices, but Goyoh was the only one he made independent.  



Sometimes it takes as long as one year to draw a picture. Goyoh spends much time preparing and thinking of  ideas. When Goyoh starts to draw he purifies his mind. He says models each have their own peculiar habits. For instance, one maiko makes her big toe stand up while she is sleeping.  Goyoh’s pictures, drawn with tender care, will one day be sold. Goyoh says it is just like a father’s feeling when he sends his daughter off to get married. “Indeed, I feel lonely.  Goyoh took an interest in this kind of art when he saw a beautiful woman picture in a magazine when he was a 3rd grade pupil at elementary school. When he was 25 years old, he overcame his family’s opposition and visited YASUDA Yukihiko, a master of historical pictures with his works with the aim of becoming a painter. “Master Yasuda, who saw my pictures, said, ‘Master Ito, who is skilled at drawing beautiful women pictures, is more suitable for you than me.’ and introduced me to him,” explains Goyoh.  







Kamakura is known as a historic town where many artists live and it was also the last place that Goyoh’s master Ito Shinsui lived. In front of the living room of his house on a small hill, deep green colors and the blue sky create a feeling of eternal time. The beautiful women that Goyoh draws with devotion will also continue to live on in time like the Mona Lisa. 

 









 

 Afterwards, one of his paintings was selected for the first time to feature in the 1957 Nitten Art Exhibition. Since then he has received many awards including an award from the Ministry of Education. He has contributed to the spreading of  Japanese-style pictures by holding his picture exhibitions in many places around Japan as well as in Britain and Spain. Ozaku is a falconer who manages these birds for hunting. In other words, falcons are his partners. A falconer quickly releases their falcon to catch a bird right after the prey takes off and its flying speed is still slow.

In falconry, birds such as goshawks and peregrines are used and each has a different personality. “Even if the birds are the same breed, each has a different character. Experienced falconers can see the ability of each falcon at first glance,” Ozaku says. Before training, falcons are made to lose extra fat to decrease weight. After that they are trained while strengthening their muscles. When a drill is completed, food is given as a reward. “Falcons know who their master is, just like dogs. They think they are a human.”  







As they concentrate on their prey, they may sometimes crash into a bush or a car.






