IKEGAMI Kimiko, one of Japan’s Japan’s top actresses, has an image that suits the kimono. She was actually born in New York and was raised there until she was three and a half years old.
Actresses’ Road Started When She Was Scouted by NHK
Kimiko’s road to becoming an actress is interesting. When she was 14 years old, she went to NHK to see her actor cousin BANDO Yasosuke (now BANDO Mitsugoro) perform in a program, and while there, she was discovered. The scout did not know she was Yasosuke’s cousin, which shows how outstanding she must have been.
Her first appearance was in the “Boy Drama Series” in which she was selected — without preparation — for the main cast. After that she received a new face award and stepped out onto the road to becoming a top actress. Kimiko had been secretly dreaming to become an artist (painter), but the young girl knew she could not

From that time on, she appeared in TV, films and theaters and has grown up to become one of Japan’s leading actresses thanks to her beauty and talent. At the end of last year, she published a collection of her photographs shot in New York to celebrate her 30 years as an actress. Her attractiveness is clear throughout the collection. Two of the photos appearing here were taken from the collection. You can

In reply to the question, “Do you want your daughter to be an actress?” she replied, “Being an actress is not a job that can be taken over. Even among second generation actresses, the success percentage seems to be low. I want her to do what she likes.” Kimiko, who has been a top actress, knows the right side and the wrong side of the entertainment world well, to the point that she may not want her daughter to walk the same road. She remembers the smell

New York is home to a mix of many different cultures, but in fact they are not actually mixed.” She says “New York is the city you visit when you are active. The city will stimulate you and you can absorb new things.”
“In addition to talent, the timing of the debut as well as an opportunity to meet a good manager is important.”
Kimiko says her greatest satisfaction as an actress is in the opportunities to deliver the joys and sorrows of life to the audience through her performances. She commented about the secrets of success to be

actor and actress, “In addition to talent, the timing of the debut as well as an opportunity to meet a good manager is important.”
Once she thought she would live in New York, but her thoughts changed greatly when she gave birth to a daughter. Having a child gave her strength and weakness. “My life changed very much,” she says. “It provided me with a strong will so that I cannot die for her. It became my strength, but at the same time it became my weakness in that I cannot live without her.” Kimiko got divorced when her daughter was two years old. Because of that, it seems they are strongly

The Expo pulls together a wide range of activities and events run by Japan and some 125 participating nations, as well as many companies and individuals from all around the globe. With many foreign dignitaries, members of royalty, government ministers and business leaders due to attend, you may well find yourself shoulder to shoulder with some very famous faces. Now the printing capabilities of PC have improved greatly. To match this improvement, better quality paper has become available and now anyone can make fake bills using a PC printer. Remarkably, six TV animation characters are ranked in the top 10. Totoro (Ghibli) was 2nd, Snoopy 3rd, Pooh 4th, Lupin3 7th, Doraemon 9th and Mickey Mouse 10th. Besides these characters, Astro Boy was ranked 11th and Sazae and Peter Rabbit also came in at higher ranks. This proves that Japanese are really fond of characters.
Real bank notes have a watermarked picture that can never be printed by an ordinary printer. If you look for it, you will be able to distinguish which bills are fake. However, due to the nature of the Japanese, many shop attendants will not check the watermarked picture in front of customers because it shows they may doubt their customer.

Who is the Ugly Duckling? This year marks 400 years since Hans Christian Andersen’s birth. The other day I had an opportunity to talk with a portly expatriate Japanese child who recently returned to Japan. The country she was raised in was poor and she said the expatriate Japanese children called themselves “Ugly ducklings.” This is taken after the name of Andersen’s famous tale “the Ugly duckling” that was born ugly and bullied by other ducklings and birds. The ugly duckling grew and one day saw his own figure reflected in the lake and realized he was a beautiful swan.
Then she shook her head and said shamefully, “Nicus-san, Japanese children go to the local Japanese school. As our parents said it was dangerous, we were sent by car to the school and had no opportunities to play with the local children. On the other hand, parents said eating local food would lead to food poisoning, so we had luxurious food imported from Japan. Before we realized it, we all became fat. That’s why we called ourselves ‘Ugly duckings.’” duckings.’ ”
I interpreted this using my imagination, “You people who have different faces and shapes were used to being bullied by the local children. One day you realized you were children of Japan, a rich country, and became very happy. So you called yourselves ‘Ugly duckings,’ right?” She became embarrassed, but I continued, “I am a beautiful swan and not an ugly duckling. Andersen’s story which indicates that swans are more beautiful than ducks, is taken as a discriminatory story by many Westerners.”

The book explains such techniques but also offers a critique on both Taoist and Tantric techniques.”

Prof.: No! According to the statistics, the majority of those couples end up in misery.

T
he 11th of February is the national foundation day of Japan. The definition of foundation differs by nation. While most emerging countries set it as their day of independence, most
Japanese don’t know how the national foundation day of Japan came about. How did this day become chosen?
The Emperor Jinmu did not exist! Japan used to celebrate this day as “Kigensetsu” before World War 2. After the war, it was abolished as it was considered to be against
Strangely, “Nihonshoki” named two Emperors as “the first
the spirit of the Constitution. However it was revived in 1966 as
Emperor who governed the nation.” One of them was the Emperor
“National Foundation Day.” February 11 is based on the

was the first Emperor who governed the nation.” Emperor Sujin is described as “creating the family register system of people and allocated duties. Things were abundant and the country was peaceful. So people admired the Emperor and called him ‘the first Emperor who governed govern ed the nation nation.’ .’ ”
The Meiji Government that won the war against the Shogunate in 1868 was urged to establish an Emperor-orientated nation and admit that all legends described in the oldest history book “Kojiki” (712 AD) and in “Nihonshoki” were true stories and to utilize this in their policies. All Emperors starting from Jinmu up to the present Emperor, were said to be descendants in an unbroken line of a god called “Amaterasu-Ohmikami” and was thus deified by the people.
What kind of figure
was
the Emperor Jinmu? To our surprise, it is
an established theory among academics that the Emperor Jinmu did not actually exist. Not only Jinmu, but also the other Emperors up to the ninth were regarded as ficticious as well. The 10th Emperor Sujin is believed to be the first actual Emperor.

which are now believed to have been fiction created by the ruler.
The famous story has it that when the Emperor Jinmu was based in Kyushu, he explored the Yamato (Kinki) region, which later became the center of Japan. The Emperor Jinmu was viewed as a shadow of the Emperor Sujin and his successors who started the Yamato Court. It is said that Emperor Jinmu passed away at the age of 127. Most of the Emperors of that time were estimated to have lived longer than 100 years. As the year of Jinmu’s enthronement was created in the lucky year based on the Chinese calendar, it seems as if the life spans of these fictitious Emperors were used for the adjustment.
There is also a myth that the sovereign was a descendant of a god in Korea. After excavating the grave of high officials in Japan such as Takamatsu-zuka, it was gradually discovered that those buried were strongly related to people living on the Korean Peninsular. If investigating the graves of the Emperor’s ancestors was permitted, the ancient history of Japan would become clearer. However, this is not permitted as it would breach the privacy of the Emperor’s family.
Does the Nihonshoki represent the change of ruler? Why did they do such a thing? In answer to this question, a very persuasive view is that the Emperor Sujin came from the Korean peninsular. This view also maintains that the Emperor’s family, who came to Japan gradually, put the influential powers of Yamato under their control and became the rulers as time went by and they needed
It is still taboo to publicly discuss the possibility that the ancestors of the Emperor’s family may have come from the Korean Peninsular. Even at present the Emperor family’s is sacred and untouchable and the name of the Emperor Jinmu will contentiously remain as Japan’s first Emperor.
to justify their status. Considering the Japanese characteristic that makes people repeat past practices, it was the most effective way to be a representative of the god as the Emperor’s family’s blood is connected to the god. In the above-mentioned two books, there are reliable sections that described the later era and the mythical period,

Who save s t he v ict ict im s of disasters?
The life of a human being will always be accompanied with luck and misfortune. It starts from one’s birth. However, it is not right thing for wise human beings to leave them as one’s destiny. Any human being will always be faced with the risk that they will suddenly be involved in misfortune. Isn’t that too cruel to leave all the solutions to helpless individuals?
Typhoons and earthquakes caused many casualties in 2004. I feel very sorry for the survivors. In a moment, they lost their loved ones and property, that they had built up over many years. I do not understand why the government doesn’t offer compensation for their loss. Although local governments offer condolence money and citizens offer charity money, these are often far from enough.
Human beings have created civilization with their wisdom. Human beings are really great, but are lacking in the wisdom for aid against weak people. We don’t need any more goods. I really hope the government spends the budget for those unlucky people so that they can live equally with the rest of the people who did not suffer.
Is it right to pass off these people as simply being unfortunate? Nobody decides to become a casualty. The government should offer enough compensation for the survivors. For whom does a nation exist? For the citizens, of course. If citizens suffer from an absurd casualty, it is a matter of duty that the government offer aid, but at present our government has left them simply as unfortunate people.

the first shogun to have the power to rule the politics of Japan became a historical event. Since then, the Emperors had been kept away from controlling politics. The autocracy of the Shogun continued until the Meiji Restoration occurred in 1868
The shoguns’ role can be briefly described as the commissioner of the Emperor. The official title of the shogun is “Seii-Taishogun,” which was given originally to the heads of the Emperor’s military who were dispatched from the Yamato (Kinki region) Imperial Court to Northern Japan (called “Emishi”) to conquer the area, where a different race was believed to have lived.
After that, the age of Emperor’s sovereignty resumed, but after Japan’s defeat in World War 2 in 1945, the Emperor became the symbol of the Japanese people, and seperated from politics.

the foreign savings rate of most banks is not good enough. Because of this, the “Nittan FX Direct” has become popular in the finance industry with regards to various foreign currency investments. The differences between the two are as follows:
Low handling charge: If you buy foreign currency from a bank, a 1 ~ 0.5 yen handling charge per currency unit (for instance, one US dollar and one Euro dollar) is required, but the “Nittan FX Direct” requires only 0.05 yen at the time when you purchase or sell. The trade is done using 10,000 dollars as a unit. Now you understand why the handling charge is much cheaper than when using foreign curren-

rency through a bank, usually you can only invest with a fixed foreign exchange rate. With “Nittan FX Direct,” you can deal in real time foreign currency trade with the bank dealers’ rates over the internet or phone.
In the case of foreign currency investment, the risk of changes in the foreign exchange rate is raised. Since the “Nittan FX Direct” trade is based on deposits, risk management becomes more important Foreign exchange trade with small amounts: To trade 10,000 dollars in foreign currency at banks savings, about one million yen should be prepared. As “Nittan FX Direct” is deposit trading, you can trade with only about five percent of 10,000 dollars, i.e. about 50,000 yen. Of course, it is advisable that you prepare enough deposit. (1$ = ¥100 )

t seems like a Halloween party every Sunday afternoon in Harajuku, Tokyo as the streets come alive with car crash victims,

evil nurses and fantasy creatures posing in front of amateur pho-
tographers and confusing tourists with their dark make-up and elaborate costumes. But Halloween party it isn’t, as it’s actually one of Japan’s popular subcultures of the young and not so young that simply astounds many foreign visitors (and Japanese) in Tokyo and around the world.

It’s actually more than just a big trend here in Tokyo as it has

become a huge hobbyist phenomena where cosplaying is seen as a form of escapism. Most of these Cosplayers believe that you can’t just dres s up as a char characte acte r, but you have to be the char characte acte r in thoughts, words and actions. In a society where the need to be in a group is very strong, Cosplaying is sometimes seen as a way to rebel against society’s norm.
Costume making is as fun as playing
There are typically three different genres of Cosplaying — science fiction, modern and fantasy. Science fiction involves space ship pilots, alien creatures and robots. In the modern genre, Cosplayers dress up as their favorite pop stars and idols. Romantic comedies and drama can seem to look like just regular street clothes for some people, but trained cosplaying fans can immediately distinguish who is
This brings us to the question: Where do they get their costumes?! Well, there are those that buy their costumes from, where else, but in the streets of Harajuku. However, some Cosplayers actually make their own costumes. Getting the right fabric, sewing patterns and finding the time to bring it to life can be as much as exciting as it is a hassle for the Cosplayer.
wearing and being who. Examples include Love Hina, Azumanga Daioh, Get Backers, Noir and Initial D. In Tokyo however, the most popular genre is fantasy where cosplaying can be as colorful as a pretty princess like Sailor Moon or as dark as evil monsters of all sizes. Anime and video games also fall into this genre. This includes the popular Final Fantasy video game, Naruto, Saiyuki, Fushigi Yugi, Slayers, Petshop of Horrors, and so much more.
This means that Cosplayers usually have to really like a certain character before putting in the time, effort and money into making the costume! Simple costumes can often be easily put together, but more complicated costumes can take weeks or even months to finish. For instance, many complex costumes involve intricate sewing, handmade wings, hand-cut sheet metal for armor, complicated patterns for exquisite dresses, beaded jewelry, specially dyed fabrics, leather belts

and gloves, pleated skirts, and countless props and fake weapons that compliment the costume. In Cosplay, every detail counts. Cosplaying has been here in Tokyo for quite some time now and it looks like it will be here to stay. Sometimes ridiculed as freaks on the streets, Cosplaying doesn’t have to be something to be scorned at. Instead, if seen as an outlet for stressed young Japanese just out to have some fun, it’s really just a harmless way for young men and women to get the attention they want through a hobby that garners attention not just on the streets, but around the world as well! In Comic Book Events or Anime Expos, Cosplayers have as much as three costumes for these gatherings and competitions. During these events, photographers are everywhere and Cosplayers just love the attention! Many end up in magazines (like this one!), websites and even become interviewed on television. Although Cosplayers are constantly fixing their costumes and wigs, applying make-up and practicing poses, they are enjoying every aspect of this fantasy world where they are in the spotlight.

Debut album, “All Stars”
It definitely looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot of these Afros this year here in Japan, with the recent successful release of their full length debut album, “All Stars.” Not only was their first single, “Hai Irasshai,” the theme song to Fuji TV’s Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-

Their music, NoviGo explains, is a celebration of Japanese culture through the eyes of a foreigner! “We love Japanese culture, food,

music, and most of all, the people. We want to show how we see Japan through our music.” Afropics adds, “Tokyo is one of the greatest cities in the world! It’s full of energy and it’s so creatively stimulating and my wife is Japanese. Half my family is Japanese. Each and every day we come to enjoy being here more and more!” Inspired by interesting and inspiring subjects during a typical day in Tokyo, Afropics explains, “We start writing down ideas (from there) and experiment with music in our studios.”
Recently, they’ve finished making the new music video for the Nice Mega Mix. For these Nice Guy Jin’s, “This album is a celebration of Japan and hope that the people of Japan enjoy it as much as we enjoy and appreciate living in Japan.”
With its simple Japanese, funny perspectives on Japan and catchy tunes, Nice Guy Jin songs can indeed be an interesting addition to your mp3 players. You can check out their songs and music videos at www.niceguyjin.com
Novigo, a former basketball player still very much active in exercise and nutrition, likes the Onsen Song the best as, “there’s nothing more relaxing than a trip to the onsen.” For Eikaiwa Dave, who recently has been taken by the art of Oyaji Gyagu (Old People’s Jokes) and coined the name Nice Guy Jin, finds the Hai Irasshai! song as his favorite as, “It was our first song and it started it all. We also performed it live on Fuji TV’s ‘Waratte ii Tomo’ and, it’s in all karaoke boxes!”
