Introduction The International Article Number (also known as European Article Number or EAN or UPC) is a standard describing a barcode numbering system used in global trade to uniquely identify a specific product. Typically EANs are 12 digits, with the last digit being a check digit. (will be assigned automatically). These numbers help customers and warehouse uniquely identify a product using bar code scanning or EDI transmissions. Businesses are required to purchase an EAN number range before it can be set up in SAP. EANs can be internal or external; you would use internal if you have purchased an EAN range and you want SAP to generate numbers from that range or external if you are using your own number range. In this document we will discuss the configuration that needs to be in place for generating and assigning EANs to materials.
Configuration Guide There are few configurations that are needed to be setup before you can use EANs.
1. Define Number Ranges for EANs/UPCs IMG Path:
2
Here you will “Edit Intervals” to create the new number range needed for the EAN category.
3
2. Define Attributes of EANs/UPCs IMG Path:
Here you will be creating and defining all attributes related to the EAN category.
4
Specify the internal/external range, check digit and the length applicable for the EAN category.
Double click on the Additiona Intervals tab to specify the Number range to be used. Note – Here you can have multiple No ranges to be used in sequence.
5
Master Data 1. Generating EANs Transaction: MM02
Enter the material number and go to Additional data.
In the Additional EANs tab, select the EAN category and the size/category you want the EAN numbers to be generated and click on “Create Numbers”.
6
Note – You can have multiple EANs for different UOM of a material as well.
7
Once the material is Saved, the EAN no will be assigned to the size/category of the material.
