How To Port PhilZ/CTR/CWM/TWRP Recovery to your Phone
Do you want to port Custom ROM to your MTK phone? It’s obviously obviously a wish of many people to port custom rom to their phone phone and enjoy new f eatures and UI in their device. By following this tutorial, you you can easily port Custom Custom ROM to your MediaTek (MTK) ChipSet phone! I bought Micromax A106 Unite 2 in May and and rooted it of of course. course. Because I never had an experience with MTK before, before, I didn’t know about MTK porting. I looked into it’s system folders and other. Also I had asked my friends like Rohan Taneja for help to port Custom Custom ROM to my device. He helped me much in learning learning of MTK porting. Finally Iwas Iwas able to port ROMs without any bugs. I have already posted about this in XDA, but I thought posting in blog will make it much easier f or people to comment because I have enabled Anonymous commenting so users can comment here without even putting their name. I will try to explain this guide in brief as I can so I don’t think anyone will have doubts left. In case if you have any doubts you can post your comment and I will reply it as soon as possible. This is for all MT65xx chipsets including: MT6577 MT6582 MT6589 MT6592

This guide is only for MTK! This will work from same chip to same chip for example MT6582 to MT6582 or MT6577 to MT6577, MT6592 to MT6592. To port Custom ROM, all you need to have is a device with same SoC and it’s Custom ROM with your own Stock ROM.
Requirements to Port Custom ROM to your MTK device: A Custom Recovery: If you don’t have follow follow this this tutorial to port one! Custom ROM (from a device with almost same specifications and SoC). Your Stock ROM. Some devices have different partitions to flash and the ROM you might flash can brick your phone. It can even hard brick your phone. So it is recommended that you do a ReadBack, ClockWorkMod Backup and MTK Droid Root & Tools backup. This tutorial [Port Custom ROM to your MTK phone] is 100% working, but still we won’t take the GUARANTEE what happens to your device! What you need to Port Custom ROM to your device [Your Chipset to Your Chipset only ]: ]: The ROM you need to port [in .zip]. Your stock ROM [extracted with /system and build.prop]. How To Port Custom ROM to your Phone:
Extract the ROM you need to port and you will have these main things: META-INF System boot.img.. boot.img If you have them then you are ready for next step. Open /system folder of stock and rom to port. Open bin folder of stock ROM and copy these files. pq vold

Now replace these files in ROM to Port‘s /System/Bin folder. Open /System/lib folder of Stock ROM and get these files: libcamalgo.so libcamdrv.so libcameracustom.so libdpframework.so libsensorservice.so libsync.so libvcodecdrv.so
Replace all the files mention above to ROM to Port‘s /system/lib folder. Now open Stock ROM’s /system/etc/ folder and copy these files:
apns.conf.xml vold.fstab vold.fstab.nand
Now replace these files in ROM to port‘s /system/etc folder. Delete these folders from ROM to Port: /System/vendor/ /System/lib/hw /System/lib/modules/ /System/etc/WiFi /System/etc/Firmware Replace these folders from Stock ROM to ROM to Port: /System/lib/hw/ /System/lib/modules/ /System/etc/firmware/ /System/etc/wifi/ /System/vendor/
The final step! Press back button to go to the main folder where you have the Stock ROM. Copy boot.img [From Stock ROM]and replace it with the ROM to Port‘s. You are ready! Go ahead and flash the ROM! Porting ROM was an easy task. Wasn’t it? But if this is your first port, then obviously your ROM might have some bugs in it. Now? Hello friend, I have a Samsung GT-i9500 Galaxy S4 MT6572 (MediaTek). I’ve spent a ROM for MT6589 and failed because as expected really is a MT6572. I have re-run the Backup ROM originally had and I have recovered after that turn and enter the recovery mode and fastboot. The problem is that when in normal mode (turn on) the screen goes black and does not leave much else. What do you recommend me about it? as getting the version of Android to retrieve the Backup running. Thanks for the help and read us … Reply Rohan Arya

Hi, you will need to backup the stock ROM (You can do this by “adb pull /system” command) and then get files from it.. After getting the files, replace them with the ROM you need to port and the files are mentioned here so I don’t think there should be any problems. deadgod

To port the ROM you don’t need it, but to fix rotation, you will need to patch one line, so it’s not that important and that’s why I skipped build.prop! Reply Tasfaout Yassine

Hi, did you get the CyanogenMod boot animation and it stuck there? If the device is running on Android 4.4.4 and you port CM11 ROM, then it should run well and good, BUT if your phone is running on Android 4.2.x or 4.4.2 (which is probably the case), then the ROM won’t boot. Reply Tasfaout Yassine

No it’s Cyanogenmod 11 for micromax a116 wich basically is an mt6589 device and i ported it to my Hisense U970 also an mt6589 device with the same spec as micromax a116 5inch 1.2ghz cup 1gb of ram. Reply Anonymous

Sorry, but as per I know you can’t because it’s (MMX U2) based on Android 4.4.2 whereas the ROM is based on Android 4.4.4. Reply Wasif

If the KitKat ROM is officially available or some people booted it then probably it didn’t work because: 1. You didn’t choose “FIRMWARE UPGRADE” and rather used “DOWNLOAD ONLY”. 2. You have 4 GB model and the ROM is for 8 GB.. Reply Wasif

Add this line in build.prop (separate line): “ro.sf.hwrotation=180”. If such line exists and it’s value is “0”, then replace it with “180”, or if it’s value is “180”, then make it “0. Reply Anonymous

Yes, you will need to modify. I didn’t mention because for newbies, it would be a pr oblem. But most probably if you port from the same chipset and your OEM is not a big one like Samsung, then you probably don’t need to edit META-INF. Reply Anonymous

Hi, make sure your archive has these files/folders in the root! “System” folder.

I haveca galaxy n9006 mtk6582 that got bricked I have clockworkmod back up of phone . I found a few stock toms and flashed them the phone turned on but the touch was frozen ,only the power and home button worked and also when I touch the volume up button the volume indicator appears on the screen but doesn’t move up or down. When the phone is booting up u can hear a tic then the boot animation appears . please help !! I have been flashing this phone over 3 weeks now and no success Reply Rohan Arya

Is it a UBIFs based device? Cloc kWorkMod doesn’t work well with UBIFs. Try wiping data which helped me in the same situation when I had a UBIFs based device. Reply Anonymous

I can not boot into recovery so I don’t know anything about the phone . the only method of flashing is through sp flash tool that works . I made the cm backup before I bricked the phone . No idea. Maybe you will need to edit INIT files inside boot.img [ramdisk]. But it depends on the ROM, so i am not sure. I always prefer to replace the whole boot.img file. Maybe this tutorial will fix your error. Reply Mark Neil

Which Android version does it have? Even if it has 4.4.4, this method will work only if you will port this ROM from Android One phones. sir, i port a rom from mtk6582 to mtk6582..and after flashing with the port rom face some problems. 1 is when i run my camera app its show “can’t connect to camera” ..i install other camera app but showing the same problem and 2nd is no audio output…i cant Hearing any music…if their is some ways to fix it,then plz help me sir.. ..all major problems are now fixed..but Still their is
some little problems..1st while i have charging my phone in power off mode the battery logo is distorted.. and 2nd is when i turn on my phone, the boot logo rotate 180 deg for a seconds and then back normal,i am try to replacing the bootanimation.zip but still the problem… those problem can be fixed?? That is the splash screen which rotates to 180 degree for a second or so. It will be in “/system/etc/bootanimation” folder I guess. You’ll need to replace with another one or with your stock one. And the power off can be fixed easily too. Just decompile framework.apk file in /system/framework folder. There search for those images and replace them with your stock ones. Reply kuttus shino

I cannot seem to move the lib/modules folder there is wlan.ko file but that is empty(0 KB) so when I try to move the folder window says cannot move the file because the folder in not there anymore. Everything else worked fine. How can I fix this? Reply Naren Chitrakar

I tried to port the ROM anyway but it just stopped at the start. said installation failed and that was it there were no other errors or anything. Before when I tried to flash this ROM,it was stuck on bootloop but it did go to any further this time. Reply Anonymous

Hi! I have (almost succesfully) ported Huawei Honor 3x PRO rom to Philips Xenium i908. Both mt6592, 4.4.2 and same specs. Difference is the display inch: huawei 5.5, philips 5.0. I’ve booted! Fixed most bugs: wifi, imei, sims, rotation and a few others. I’m left with camera problem but forget camera. The thing i’m struggling with is with backlight. It is on max and the brightness slider doesn’t to anything. When i wake the device, the display turns on, but no backlight (tested with a flashlight). I can change brightness through terminal or adb, by sending ‘echo “80” > /sys/class/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness’, or ‘echo “80” > /sys/devices/platform/ledsmt65xx/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness’. Or any other value than 80, but 255 kills my eyes. I modified a lot of things in boot.img, moved all stock modules to port rom. What should i do? I really want EMUI 2.3 (not 1.6, 2.0, or 3.0) on my device. It’s been 2 months since i started. I cannot use my device with the ported rom. The stock just doesn’t fit my taste. Sir You can’t always port any Same Chipset to chipset because of the android version of the phone if you portMTK6577 with jellybean to MTK6577 with ICS version your finished product will be Bootloop .. try to port a r om with the same android version .. and it will RUN as what you expect .. I guess one device is UBIFS based and another one is EXT4 based. You will need to do much work in boot.img and also in /system/bin (replacing files), so hunt a device with EXT4/UBIFS partition (the one you have). Reply Anonymous

I will not guide you wrong, but TBH i don’t know about this bug. Try porting this ROM from ANOTHER device (non OPPO) because OPPO ROMs are OEM based and are kernel dependent so you will need to patch the kernel.. Easier way would be to port this rom from another phone (again, NON OPPO). Reply Anonymous

Sorry, but I don’t take money for this. It would be good if you port an AOSP ROM from another tablet with same resolution and processor. For KitKat, it’s not easy until you have kernel source (which I guess Lenovo has r eleased for IdeaTab S600-H).. Try Xposed Framework with KitKat (or even Lollipop) ttheme and enable some KK features through it’s modules. Reply adisti setya

hi, i have tried to port miui 5 and color os 2.1 of mt6589 of micromax canvas plus(i guess) but it stuck on bootloop then restarts. i have tried your method (FAILED) Another method which is on xda and shows lots more files to port (FAILED). By porting with your method the device never reached to boot screen. screen goes blank and then reboots. by xda method i reached at bootloop and then reboots. my device has same SoC as the given device and same android too (4.2.1) Still no success! and btw i want to add an image in my settings.apk’s about device menu how can i do that? Ignore that and get any tool for the same (hardware testing). If 2 GB RAM appears there then you are lucky and if not, hunt a device with 2 GB RAM and on same SOC. Reply nimesha

Hi, my stock ROM is JB 4.2.1 and the ROM I want to port is JB 4.2.2. For the boot.img, I know that I have to do kernel porting. But for all the rest (lib, hw, etc…) ca, I use my stock ROM files or do I necessarily need an exact 4.2.2 ROM to do the porting ? Reply Rohan Arya

4.2.2 can be easily ported to 4.2.1 device with some init.rc file changes (in boot.img).. No need or anything else. Reply aly zacry

dude… I’m using Karbonn A92 which is based of mt6572 with ubifs system…. i have ported the rom but I’m not a able to install a custom recovery…. I also have increased the partition size for recovery on my phone… I had installed Carliv Touch Recovery but whenever I boot into recovery my screen goes black and i have to restart my phone…. my phone runs on jb 4.2.2… please help! You cannot upgrade easily from KK to LP. ._. For battery, I guess it’s a fault in your battery. Try another custom ROM from another device (KK only).. Reply androtech

Hi sir, thanks for this very informative blog. Haven’t tried it though. My device is MTK6577 running on a custom Galaxy S5 based ROM kitkat. I have everything backed up, I just have few questions. 1. Will I be able to port any KitKat based rom to my device using only this tutorial or will I need the Android Kitchen for this (for tweaks and edits) 2. I also have my stock ROM handy but I can’t find the pq file in System/bin. But the vola file is there I’m stuck on that part. Is it ok to skip that part, then I’ll just replace the vola file? I have flashed cm12.1 ROM in mtk6582 device but facing some problems such as I can capture pictures but !!! can’t record video!!! !!!! Unable to record audio it says unable to access the card and Google app says unable to connect microphone while voice search !!!! !!!!! WiFi hotspot also not working !!!! !!!!! Try to port any ROM from – Micromax A106, Micromax Canvas 2.2 Colors, Coolpad 7295C. You can get most of the ROMs from these devices! Reply jose

Could you please fix the instructions. In many places you write “Now replace these files in ROM to Port‘s /System/Bin folder.” it would be better to write “Now copy these files to the ROM to Ports/System/Bin folder.” Other places you wrote: ” Copy boot.img [From Stock ROM]and replace it with the ROM to Port‘s.” it would be better if wrote : “Copy boot.img from the [Stock ROM] to [ROM to Ports]. In general I think they way you use “replace it with” is very confusing, please consider editing article and use “copy to” instead. Also if you use [STOCK ROM] and [PORT ROM] everywhere to will make thinks clear. Cheers Thanks for the article. Reply Harry

how to port mt6571 to mt6582 am direct editing system file in linux. system.img to flash sp flash tool. unpack my stock system.img to linux n change bootanimation n repack n flash with sp flash tool for testing its works no problem. when i port mt6571 to mt6582 same kitkat 4.4.2 version n
