HP LaserJet Printers and Multifunction Devices How to Disable Remote Firmware Upgrades Description RFU Update Configuration Best Practices Updating the RFU Setting Control Panel Methods Device List

Description The firmware upgrade operation updates or replaces device operating system code on HP printers and multi-function devices, and is commonly referred to as a “remote firmware update ? (RFU). The Remote Firmware Upgrade setting determines if the firmware update process is allowed to be performed.

RFU Update Configuration Best Practices Performing a Remote Firmware Update (RFU) is typically the responsibility of an administrator within an organization. For security reasons, RFU is an option that should only be enabled when new firmware is being loaded. RFU should be disabled at all other times.

Updating the RFU Setting There are multiple methods to configure the RFU option. The setting can be configured for multiple devices simultaneously using the HP Web Jetadmin (WJA) fleet management tool. Devices can also be configured individually through a web page, however some older HP Printers require HP Web Jetadmin. Some low-end printers manipulate the setting from the control panel menu.

HP Web Jetadmin Method To disable the RFU setting from Web Jetadmin 1. Select Device(s) . 2. Select the Config tab. 3. Expand Security section and select Printer Firmware Update . 4. Select the Checkbox and select the Disable radio button. 5. Select Apply , and follow the dialog prompts. Figure 1: Disabling the RFU setting from Web Jetadmin

Embedded Web Server (EWS) Method To disable the RFU setting from the EWS 1. Open the EWS configuration interface by entering the device IP address in a web browser. Figure 2: Entering the device IP address 2. Select the Settings tab. 3. Select Security menu. 4. Select Configure Security Settings button. Figure 3: Security menu options 5. Uncheck the Remote Firmware Upgrade checkbox. 6. Select Apply . Figure 4: Disabling the RFU setting from EWS

Control Panel Methods There are several Control Panel configurations that support configuring the Remote Firmware Upgrade settings. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c03154309
