Overview
There have been many discussions on how to use Gmail (or other SMTP server) as mail server in SAP for IDES or any SAP server setup for training purpose where the customer does not own a separate mail server in the domain. This document will help for those who are looking for the solution to use Gmail for training purpose or in case customer does not have their own mail server. In general Gmail or any other SMTP server can be configured following the same steps. However, this document will guide to use Gmail with the help of relay server concept since the Gmail cannot be used directly in SAP.

Instructions
Requirement: 1. Account in Gmail or other SMTP server (Gmail is used here) 2. Windows 2003 server – IIS SMTP server for relay server
Steps: Create an email id in Gmail Go to www.gmail.com and sign up for a new account.
Install SMTP in IIS (Windows 2003 Server) a) Go to -> Control Panel b) Select -> Add or Remove Program c) Add/Remove Windows Components

d) Select SMTP Service This will also select the IIS Manager or any additional services required, please leave the selection as it is (don’t unselect any services)

Select outbound security and enter Gmail user name and password

Return back and select outbound connection
Change the TCP port to 587 (Port 587 is SMTP mail submission) Return back and select Advanced
Enter the server name in Fully-qualified domain name(FQDN): SMTP Host: smtp.gmail.com And check DNS
