A Quick Advice for You Did you know? One day we shall all die and all the things we have in this world right now will no longer be of any use to us. Whether you are rich or poor it won’t make any difference. The only thing that will matter after you die is how you lived your life. Will the Lord find you worthy enough to live the rest of eternity with him? Will your name be found in the Book of Life?
Do you believe in God? Do you Go To Church? Do you Read the Holy Bible? If you do not then you should. No matter what the situation in your life looks like right now, please do not let it distract you from the things that truly matter in the long run. The Lord knows everything and He will make all things perfect in His time. If He saved my partner and I and rescued us from unemployment then He can and will do the same for you.
Please pray this short prayer now: Lord God Almighty, thank you for giving me this opportunity to make things right with you. I am very sorry for all my sins and promise to change for the better from today. I believe that you are my Creator and that you sent your Son Jesus Christ to die for my sins. I believe that by His death He washed away my sins and saved me. Lord Jesus Christ today I open the door of my heart and invite you to come in and be the Lord of my life. I hand over all my worries and burdens to you. Thank you for saving me. May your Holy name be praised forever. Amen If you just prayed the above prayer then please look for a good Bible believing Church and start attending daily or weekly services if you were not attending before. Also read the Holy Bible regularly and get baptized (if you aren’t already). All praise and glory be to Jehovah Yahweh God Almighty for the knowledge and inspiration HE gave us to write this guide. He is The Beginning and the End of All things, the Almighty KING and the Creator of Heaven and Earth and His NAME is above any other name on Earth and in Heaven. All Praise and Glory to His Son Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World (Mai Cheton duniya). May God bless you as you read this guide.

Why Did We Write this e-Guide? In 2010, we revealed for the very first time that we were making N225,000 every month from our internet businesses. Ever since that revelation, we have been inundated with questions and pleas from our more than 200,000 subscribers regarding how we were doing it. The most common questions we were being asked was how to start making money online in Nigeria and how to build a website. After starting our new company NG44 Consulting in May 2011, we started a corporate social responsibility drive that led us to create some free packages to address these two questions. One of these packages is this e-book which you are now reading while another package is our free 7 Day e-mail course on introduction to online business. (If you have not yet taken that free ecourse, kindly visit www.ng44.com/freecourse right now to claim your free spot before the training ends)
Why Are We Giving it Away? Running a job website has shown to us the dire state and desperation facing millions of Nigerian families, youths and graduates today due to the horrible unemployment crisis in the nation. Because we have been through the same suffering and pain, we know what it feels like and we are trying our best to see how we can help out by contributing our own little quota. Just as we have been able to build a regular income stream and gain financial independence from doing online business, it is our desire that as many people as possible learn this skill so that they too can be empowered to free themselves from the bondage of financial lack by becoming self reliant. One of the first steps in the journey of an internet entrepreneur is the ability to create web pages, at least at a basic level. We are therefore giving away this guide because we want as much people as possible to have this knowledge and we encourage you to make use of it how best they can and share with others. We wish you success in all your endeavours. Enjoy…

A Quick Introduction to Website Technology Before a website can appear on the Internet you need to have two things in place: one of these is called a domain name and the other is called a web host. Once you have a domain name and web host, the next thing is to design your website and send it to the web host.
Domain name: The domain name is the name that you normally type when you want to visit a website. The domain name is commonly called the website’s address or URL (an acronym which stands for Uniform Resource Locator). For example, the domain name or the address of our jobs website Latest Nigerian Jobs is www.latestnigerianjobs.com. A domain name can also be written with “http://” in front of it with or without the “www”. www.latestnigerianjobs.com, latestnigerianjobs.com, http://www.latestnigerianjobs.com or http://latestnigerianjobs.com are all different ways to write a domain name.
Web hosts: A website is actually just a collection of different files and folders and you need somewhere to store these online for them to be accessible to people on the Internet. The place where you store these files is called your web host or web server and the process of storing the files is known as hosting. Only when your website’s files have been hosted on the Internet can people access it. A web host is the company that helps you to house your files and folders online so that when people type your domain name, they will see your website. The domain name and the web host are the two things that you normally need to have in place for your website to be active. Most web hosting companies provide both domain name and hosting services together so you can actually obtain both from the same company.

How does one get a domain name and a web host? There are generally two ways that you can get a domain name and web host for your website. One way is to get it for free and the other way is to pay for registration and yearly subscription. So what’s the difference between free and paid? Well, it depends on how you want to look at it. Just as there are thousands of paid web hosting companies online, there are also thousands of free website services and they each possess various degrees of quality. While some free web hosts are of very poor standard compared to the paid web hosts, you can still find some other free ones that are very good. Among these good ones is Google Blogger (or Blogspot) which is probably the best free choice for people intending to earn money through blogging or through advertising on their website. In my journey on the Internet, I have tried out dozens of both free and paid hosts and trust me, Blogspot is currently the best and is also among the easiest. Once you can master the use of Blogspot to create websites and blogs, you will suddenly begin to see endless possibilities in making money online and you will ask yourself if you have been living in this same world all this time. You will be empowered to do any kind of online business without worrying about how to get a website. And you will find out that there are lots of things that you can do to make money just by knowing how to easily create websites fast. In this guide, I shall teach you step by step how to build a free blog with Blogger (or Blogspot) with whom you can register and host a website without spending a kobo. But I shall not go into much detail on the various ways that you can use your free website to make money online because that is beyond the scope of this guide. If you will like to find out more about the different ways that you can make money from a website then I would suggest that you buy our online business complete e-tutor package. We are running a special promotion right now so if you are lucky you might still be able to get it at one-third the normal price which we sell it. More on Free and Paid Domains Free: The type of domain name you will get when you follow the methods in this guide will be of the form www.mywebsitename.blogspot.com . This type of address is known as a subdomain. It is free and is like a subset of www.blogspot.com. To be able to view your website, you must add .blogspot.com after the name that you chose else you will not be able to access it. Most free domain names are actually in the form of subdomains. Paid: To get a website that is just a straight .com without the .blogspot, just like ours www.latestnigerianjobs.com, you will need to first register the domain name through a hosting company and then buy a hosting package for the name. In this case, you will need to pay yearly for the name and the hosting. This paid type of website is also not discussed in this guide but if you are interested, you can find detailed information about it in our e-Tutor. As earlier mentioned, we are also running a special bonanza for that e-book right now so if you are lucky you might still be able to get it at one-third of the normal price which we sell it. To learn more visit www.ng44.com/ebiz . Paid domain with free hosting: One very good thing with Blogspot is that it is also possible to convert your .blogspot website to use a paid domain name after you have built it, thereby removing the .blogspot.com from the URL. But the website will still be hosted for free on Blogspot so you will not need to be paying for hosting. I will also not go into much detail about how to do this in this guide because it’s a bit complex, but later in the next section I will tell you how you can get it done if you need to do it.
Free or Paid, Which is Better? The table on the next page outlines some of the more important similarities and differences/ pros and cons of both types. The free domain used here refers to Blogger (.blogspot.com) and may be different from other free hosts.

Does not affect traffic or reduce how much money the site will make You have 100% access to all your data
Depending on your preferences, you may chose to first start with the free name and hosting from blogspot as described in this book and later convert it to the paid type. On the other hand, you may chose not to wait till later and just go ahead and convert it to the paid type immediately after you have finished creating the blog. Mind you, this does not mean that you cannot run a successful blog with the free .blogspot name and free hosting. You can have a successful website using a free name. In fact there are a lot of big popular websites today who are still using the free domain name with .blogspot and they are still making thousands every month from using it through online business. So converting to a paid domain is not a must for success. However, if you want a website address that is easy to pronounce and more professional, you should consider upgrading to the paid domain after you have built your website. This book does not cover how to obtain and configure a paid domain because our focus is on how you can get everything set up for free without spending money. For details on how to obtain a paid domain for your blog, please visit www.ng44.com/services/blogger/customdomain

Types of Websites There are many various categories and types of websites. Some websites are dedicated to one category while others comprise of a combination of various types all merged into one. The most common types/categories of websites are listed below: Corporate: This is the normal company website without too many extra functions, just mainly information about the company. Portal: Portals are like gateways to large varieties of information, services, resources, news and sometimes directories. A good example is www.yahoo.com. E-Commerce: An e-commerce website is a site that is primarily meant for selling things and making various transactions online. It is commonly set up in the form of a store or catalogue where clients can select a product, view the details, purchase and then pay for it online. Social Network: A social network allows you to make friends, share videos and photos and connect with people. Popular examples of social network websites are Facebook.com and Twitter.com . Dating and Chat Sites: These are types of websites targeted specifically at matchmaking. Many of their features are similar to those of social networks in that they allow people to create personalized profiles and interact with other members. Some of these websites also allow members to chat with each other in public or private chatrooms. Forum: An example of a forum website is www.nairaland.com and www.naijahotjobs.com. In a forum website, people can register and then start discussions by posting something on the forum. Other members can then comment on what that person has written and it continues on and on like that. A forum can also be called a message board. Blog: A blog (or weblog) is a type of website that is updated regularly if not every day. Most job and career websites in Nigeria are blog websites. After following the steps in this book, you are going to end up with a blog website with a free address like www.myjobwebsite.blogspot.com

Search Engine: A search engine is a website that you can use to search for information online. The most popular example of a search engine is www.google.com which is also the biggest search engine in the world.
The Structure of Websites A website is comprised of web pages. Every information that you post is stored and shown on pages so when people view a link on your website, what they will actually be looking at is one of the pages of your website. A blog can have different pages for different purposes. One type of page is the home page which is the first page that people see when they come to your website by typing your web address. For example, the page that you see on your screen when you type www.ng44.com is our home page.
Decide on a name Before building your free blog, it is wise to first decide on a name for it. The name that you chose is used to generate your domain name and it is a very important factor in the long term growth of your website. If you try to use a name that someone has already used, it will not be accepted and you will be required to use a different name. Imagine the name as your website identity, just like your email address which is also unique. While selecting a name, take note that many of the common names have already been taken because there are millions of other people who have used blogger to create their blogs. Also note that ideally your name must be easy to recall and must not be too long so that when people see it repeatedly, the name will stick. For example, if you are building a job related blog then you can use a name like 774jobs or for a news blog, something like Naijanews234 so your URL will now be 774jobs.blogspot.com or naijanews234.blogspot.com

Building a Website with Blogger And now the moment has finally come. In the next section I shall take you through the steps on how you can create your own free blog website with Blogger (www.blogspot.com). It is really very simple and once you get used to it, you will be able to create a free blog in just 10 minutes. Before you can use Blogger, you must first have a Google account. This is not a difficult thing to get and it’s free. In fact some people already have a Google account but they may not realize it. For example, if your email address ends with @gmail.com or @googlemail.com it means you already have a Google account so you will not need to create a new one if you want to use this email address to register. To register your new blog, go to www.blogspot.com Following is what the website looks like:

As mentioned earlier, if you already have a gmail or googlemail address, that is if your email address ends with @gmail.com or @googlemail.com it means you can log in directly because you already have a Google account. But if you don’t have that type of email address then you will need to first create a Google account. We shall now look at both cases.
1. If you already have a Gmail or Googlemail address or you already have an account with Google In this case, you can sign in directly and then move on to the process of creating your free blog. On the right hand side of the page as shown below, you’ll see a section that says “Sign in with your Google Account”. Enter your user name and password as indicated and then click on “Sign In”. If you are browsing from a cybercafé or with a computer that is not yours then do not click the box that says “Stay signed in”. If you do then you will not be logged out even after you close the browser.
When you have thus successfully signed in, you will see a new page which is known as the dashboard. It is from the dashboard that you can create new blogs, manage existing ones and view other information and statistics

regarding your blog website and other Blogger websites. With this your one account, you can actually create as many blogs as you like. Click on “Create your blog now”
OK. Next we shall look at a situation where you do not already have a Google account. If you have already logged in with your Google email according to Section 1 above, Please skip section 2 below and go directly to the section after it which is “Verify your Identity”.
2. If you don’t already have a Google account (or Gmail) If you do not already have a Google account and you’ve not used any other Google related service where you had to create a Google account before, then this is the process that you should follow: When you go to www.blogspot.com click on “Get Started”

We suggest that you create a new email address which you can be using for all your online business dealings. Something more like your corporate email address because you are in business now. This is the email that you will use to register for your Google account. It can be something like
[email protected] or
[email protected] Next you will be asked to create a Google account. You will be shown a form which you are expected to fill. I will now explain how to fill this form.

Email address: Enter the email address you want to use to register. This is the email address that you will be using to sign into your website. After filling the form, an email verification message will be sent to this email address. We shall look at the verification email shortly but for now just make sure that the email address you use is active. Type the email address again under “Retype email address” Password: This is the password that you will be using to log in after you have created your blog. It must be more than eight letters long. Make sure that it is something you can remember and write it down in case you forget it. You can use the same password that you use for your email, but we suggest that you use something different. As you type, a line will show under “Password strength”. This line shows you how strong your password is. Make sure that this line shows either blue or

green. Blue means that the password is good, while green means that it’s very good.
Sometimes you may not see a line at all. If there’s no line then don’t worry, just type the password, make sure it’s more than eight letters and retype it below where it says “Retype password” then move on to the next question.
Email notifications: You can skip this question, it doesn’t really matter. But if you’ll like to be getting announcements and other tips from Google then you can tick the small box beside the question by clicking on it. Birthday: You can also jump this question because it is not mandatory. But we advise that you enter your real date of birth because in the event that you forget your password, Google can use it to help you get another one. Note that the date you enter must be in the American format of Month/Day/Year e.g. if you were born on September 11, 1983, write it as 9/11/83. See other examples below:

March 22, 1978 should be written as 3/22/78 December 25, 1985 should be written as 12/25/85
You may get errors if you don’t use the correct format to write the date. Word Verification: The word verification can be very tricky so you must look at the words in the picture very carefully and write them down in the box. The letters are not case sensitive. This means that it doesn’t matter whether you write them as small or capital letters. All that matters is that you get the letters correctly.
If the letters you type are not correct, you will get an error message and be presented with a new word. Acceptance of Terms: After entering the word verification, tick the small box beside “I accept the Terms of Service” to show that you accept Google’s terms and conditions, and then click on “Continue”
Verify Your Identity The next step is to verify your identity. You can do this via SMS text message where a code will be sent to your phone or through Voice call where an automated call will be made to your phone.

Click on “Select a country” and select your country e.g Nigeria. Then enter your phone number in the box below it. The phone number should be in international format. To get the international format of your Nigerian number, remove the starting zero in your number and replace it with +234 like so (+234 is the country phone code for Nigeria): 080344555666 should be written as +23480344555666
Concerning the network to use, we have found out that an MTN number receives the verification codes instantly while Glo may delay. We’ve not yet tried Zain. Note that Starcomms, Multilinks and other CDMA numbers may not always work so my advice is that you use an MTN line for fastest results. It’s not a must that it has to be your own number because this is just for verification purposes only. But if you don’t have access to an MTN line then you can try any of the other networks. After entering your number in the correct format, click on “Send verification code to my mobile phone”

If the number is not in the correct format, you will get an error message and you will need to enter the number again. But if the format is correct then you will see the following screen:
You will receive a text message from Google containing your verification code. If the code does not arrive immediately, wait for a few minutes. If it still doesn’t come after a long time then you may have to try another number. To do this, click on “try sending it again” and enter another number and repeat the previous process. When you receive the code, enter it in the box above and click on “Verify” Note: Sometimes when you try to verify your account by following the instructions above, you may see that only phone verification is available (no SMS) under verification options. At other times, you may get a message that your country is not supported. If you do not see the SMS option, you can go ahead and use the phone verification option instead. In this case, a phone call will be made to the number you enter and as soon as you answer the call, a voice will start calling out the code numbers so before answering the call you should be prepared with a pen and paper to write down the code.

If you get the message that your country is not supported, it means Google is probably doing some maintenance work therefore you have to wait for 24 hours and try again the next day. If you still get the same message, try again few days after. If you enter the code correctly and there are no mistakes, you should see the following screen where you are required to enter the name that you want to use for your blog.
Now remember earlier on I said that you have to choose a name for your blog, this is where you enter that name which you have chosen. You must also enter a title for your blog under “Blog Title” Before going ahead, let me talk about the Blog title a bit. The Blog title is a very important aspect of your blog because it plays a huge role in determining how easily people will find your website when they search. In conjunction with the blog address, the Blog title is among the most important aspects of your blog. The title you use for your blog should not be too long and could be between 5 to 15 words long. This title can be changed at any time after creating the blog but it’s not advisable to change it frequently, if at all. Some examples of good Blog titles are: Nigerian Jobs Recruitment and Careers Website Nigerian News – Hot News, Breaking News and Popular Nigeria Issues

It is important here to point out that whatever subject your blog is talking about, the title ought to be related to that subject. In the examples given above and on the previous page, the first is for a job blog, the second is for a news site, the third is a personal blog and the fourth is also for a job blog. After entering the Blog title, the next thing is to enter the blog address. As shown in the image, what you enter here this is the part of your blog address that will appear before .blogspot.com. For example, if you picked nigerianjobseeker as your blog name, then that is what you have to enter here. In the end, the full website address of your blog will be www.nigerianjobseeker.blogspot.com. This is what you or other people must type to visit your blog. Remember that since this is a free name, you must always include the .blogspot.com for it to work. Assuming that the name you chose for your blog (as discussed earlier) is nigerianjobs, then under blog address, you should enter nigerianjobs
To know if this name is still available, you can click on “Check Availability” and it will tell you whether that name has already been used by another person or not.

If it has already been used, it will suggest some names that you can use. If you don’t like any of the suggested names then you can type in a new name and click on “Check Availability” to check again if it’s available.
You have to keep trying until you find a name that is available. While at it, bear in mind that many of the common combinations you can think of have already been used by other people so you have to be quite creative while selecting a name. When you finally find one that is still available, take note of it and then click on “continue” If everything has been done properly, you will be asked to choose a starter template for your blog. Verify Your Account Sometimes you may be asked to also verify by email before you can effectively use your new Google account, but not everybody gets this email. This is different from the phone verification that you’ve already done. As at the time that you created your account above, an email was sent to the email address that you used. Inside this email you will find a link that you need to click for your account to be verified. Below is a sample of this email:

If you do not receive this email message don’t worry, just go ahead. In the next section, we shall look at the controls that will enable you to configure your blog and set some necessary parameters. We shall look at them one by one but let us first learn how to log out of our account and log in again.
The Backend and the Frontend Your new blog is comprised of two sections known as the backend and the frontend. The backend section of a website is the section that you normally have to log in first before you can get access. You are the only one that has access to your backend. Visitors to your website can not access your backend. They can only see your frontend. The backend is where you can manage every aspect of your blog. From here you can update, configure and troubleshoot your blog. You can also create new blogs if you like. You are the only one that has access to this section of the blog and you must log in with your email and password before you can use this section. The front end is that part of the blog that other people will see when they visit your website address or URL. People on the frontend cannot change anything on the back end. What you normally see when you visit any website on the Internet is the front end so when you say designing your blog, what you are actually doing is designing your blog’s frontend. After you have created your account and logged out of for the very first time, the next time that you log in you will be taken to the Dashboard. If you are currently still logged in to your account, log out now and login again. To log out of your account, click on “Sign Out” on the top right hand corner of the screen.

To log in again, you can go to www.blogger.com and enter your email that you used to register and your password. Remember if you are not using your own computer to browse then don’t select “Stay signed in”
Alternatively, to log in visit your website by typing the address e.g. www.jobnews.blogspot.com and click on “Sign in” on the top right hand corner.

When you have signed in, the first place you are taken to is the “Dashboard”. From the dashboard you can manage all aspects of your blog and even create new blogs. The Dashboard is part of the backend of the website which is accessible to you alone. One of the best things about a Google Blogger account is that you can open as many blogs as you like, all under one account. All blogs can be managed through the Dashboard. If you have created only one blog, then you will see the title of only one blog. But if you have more than one blog, you will see them listed on the dashboard together with separate controls for each of them.
In the picture above, this person has created three blogs: Nigerian Jobs, Miun and Nigerian Hot Jobs. Each blog is completely independent and separate from the others. Each has its own set of links separate from all the other blogs and any changes made on one blog will not affect any of the others.

The blue “New Post” button is for creating new posts and making new updates. “Edit Posts” is for viewing, editing and managing a list of all your blog posts. “Settings” takes you to the configuration settings for the blog (we shall be looking at this shortly). “Design” takes you to the place where you can change the design of your blog. “Monetize” is the place where you handle all the monetary aspects of your blog e.g. how much you’re making, how you will receive the money etc. and “Stats” shows you the number of visitors your website is getting. Let us now look at each of these links as we configure your new blog. To get to the settings area, click on “New Post” from the dashboard.
Setting Up and Configuring Your New Blog To set up your blog for optimal performance, it is necessary to configure it by selecting and modifying some of the available options.
The configuration links and tools are shown in greater detail above. You can see that there are some major segments. These segments are known as tabs and they include: “Posting”, “Settings”, “Design”, “Monetize”, “Stats” etc. The last link on the line which is “View Blog” is not really one of the tabs. If you click on it, you can see what your blog frontend currently looks like. Under each tab are further sub-segments or sub-links. For example, under the “Posting” tab as we can see in the picture, there is a line having “New Post”, “Edit Posts”, “Edit Pages” and “Comment Moderation”. All these are the sub links that come under “Posting”. The act of updating a blog is known as “posting”. So whenever you update your blog with some new information or write-up, what you’re really doing is usually called “posting an article” or “making a post” and the article itself can also be referred to as a post.

P a g e | 33
Also take note in the previous picture that the Posting tab is the active tab. This means that it is the one whose sub-links are showing. Watch what happens when we click on the Settings tab:
As you can see the sub-links have now changed and the Settings tab becomes bold which tells us that it is now the active tab. We also see that the sub-links have changed. Now we have “Basic”, “Publishing”, “Formatting” etc. In the same way, clicking on the other tabs makes them active and reveals the sub links under them. When the active tab is changed, the rest of the page also becomes different in relation to the options available under that tab. Let us look at some of the tabs one by one. Since we have not yet made any post on our blog, we’ll skip the Posting tab and go to Settings for now. Later on we shall analyse the Posting tab and the various options under it.
The Settings Tab To get to the Settings tab from the dashboard, click on the “Settings” link under the appropriate blog. You can also click on the “Settings” tab if you are on the Posting page. Clicking on the Settings tab reveals the sub-links that come under it. These settings control various aspects of your blog. As mentioned previously, when you click on any tab, the rest of the page also changes accordingly so let us see what the rest of our page looks like after having clicked on the tab.

What you see in the picture above is just the first half of the page. Take note that this page displays the options that are available to you under the “Basic” sub link of the “Settings” tab. Other options under this sub link can be seen by scrolling down the page. Let us look at each of these options and what should be selected. Blog Tools: This segment contains three links: Import Blog, Export Blog and Delete Blog. You can use these links to manipulate your blog data. Through these links, you can import the contents of another blog into your new blog, export, download or transfer your blog to your computer or to another host and you can also delete the current blog that you are working on. Title: This is the Blog title which you entered in previous sections. If you wish to modify the title, this is where you can change it. For now, do not change this. Description: This is a short description of what your blog is about. As usual, you should ensure that this description contains words related to your website’s overall topic. The description should not be too long, maybe about 10 to 20 words. Let’s see some examples of descriptions that can be used.

You should take a cue from these examples and generate a description that will be unique to your blog. •

As can be seen from the examples above, the description describes what the blog is all about. For the other options on this page, do the following: Add your blog to our listings?: Select “Yes” Let search engines find your blog? Select “Yes” Show Quick Editing on your Blog? Select “Yes” Show Email Post links? Select “Yes” Adult Content? Select “No” Under “Global Settings”, do not change anything, just go straight to “Save Settings” and click the button to save the new settings that you have made.
When you click on save settings, a message appears near the top of the page. This indicates that the new settings have been saved. If this message does not appear, wait a little bit and if it still does not appear, click on “Save Settings” again.

This also goes for all the other settings and tabs. Whenever you change any options, you must always save it in this manner so that the settings remain, otherwise they might be lost when you click on another sub-link or another tab.
Having saved our new settings successfully, we move on to the other sublinks. I shall only talk about those sub-links that contain options that we need to change at this stage. In the “Publishing” sub-link, there are no options that we need to change for now so we skip it and go on to the “Formatting” sublink. Click on it to reveal the options that come under it.

In this sub-link, change the first option “Show at Most” to 5 posts. This is the amount of posts that will be shown on your blog home page. You also need to change the Time Zone. Change it to Lagos (note that the list is not alphabetical rather its according to the various time zones, so look for GMT +01:00 and then locate Lagos.
After doing this, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Save Settings” to save the new settings. Next, click on the “Comments” sub-link. Here we need to change only two things. The first is to click inside the red circle in the next picture to change “Who can comment?” to the first option which is “Anyone” instead of “Registered Users”. Setting this option to “Anyone” will make it easy for people to comment on your blog.

The second thing you need to change in the settings is “Comment Notification email” which is the last setting. So leave everything else and just scroll to the bottom of the page. Here you will enter your email inside the box so that whenever a visitor to your website leaves a comment on any vacancy, you will receive an email to notify you.
After entering your email, click on save settings, wait for the confirmation that the settings have been saved, and then click on the next sub-link which is “Archiving”. Under archiving, there is only one change to make and this is in the first option (Archive Frequency). Change this to Weekly or Daily and click Save Settings.

Please do not change any of the settings in the remaining sub-links of “Email & Mobile”, “OpenID” and “Permissions”. Only when you are more advanced should you bother about those settings. For now, their current values are okay. That’s the end of this chapter. In the next chapter, we shall see how you can change the way your blog looks to visitors on the frontend.

The Design Tab We now get to the fun aspect of the blog creation process which is creating the actual design of your website. To get to the Design tab, login to your account dashboard and click on the “Design” link that corresponds with your new blog:
Before I go into the steps proper, let us first see what the Frontend currently looks like. Click on “View Blog”.
What you see is the frontend of your blog. This is what other people will see when they type your web address into the their computer. This is the first page which, as we remember, is the home page. Take note that the icons that look like spanners can also be used to e edit different portions of the page. This spanner icon is only visible to you because you are logged in.

What you are now looking at is called the Page layout. It is like the skeleton of the page. It shows the various elements that will form the general design and layout of the pages on your blog. Every page of your website will follow this general structure. As you can see, the page layout is divided into different segments or zones. Each of these zones actually corresponds to similar areas on the frontend. The zones and their various contents make up what are known as page elements. Page elements simply mean the various elements that make up a page structure. With this kind of arrangement, it is very easy for us to add items to each zone or remove items. Compare both views of your page. Try to identify the elements on the page skeleton where they appear on the Frontend. You need to do this to help you understand how Blogger pages are structured because this will help you to really understand what you are doing during the design process.

In the preceding pictures, I have shown both views one after the other so that you can easily compare them. In the frontend view, I have marked out and numbered the main zones which are: 1. Header zone, 2. Left column (or body), 3. Footer zone and 4. Right column This type of layout is known as two-column (i.e. the left and right column). Each of the zones contains page elements. Later on we shall look at other types of page structures but let us first take a closer look at the zones and page elements. Look closely at the page layout structure and you will notice that it is made up of boxes and rectangles. Look even more closely and you will notice that there are two types of these rectangles in the picture. One type is drawn with a dotted line and the other type is drawn with a solid line.
Also notice that the boxes with the dotted lines contain the words “Add a Gadget”. A gadget in Blogger is just a way of adding various additional functions and effects to your blog. There are various types of gadgets that can help you add different things to your blog page structure. Some gadgets have already been added automatically and these are the boxes that are made up of a solid border.
In the picture above, the boxes labelled “Followers”, “Blog Archive” and “About Me” are all different types of gadgets. A gadget can be added and

removed at any time. You can also place gadgets inside any of the zones of the page and move it about as you like. Later we shall come back to gadgets but let us look at something else first. Let us look at how we can change the layout, colours, general visual look and other parameters of the frontend. We can do this from the template designer so click on it.
This takes us to the template designer utility:
The template designer is a very simple but powerful tool that is at the heart of Blogger’s design process. If you want to be able to create beautiful and

powerful looking websites with blogger then you must pay special attention to this section as I explain how the designer works. You will notice that the screen has been split into two parts, the upper part and the lower part. The upper part is where you select various designs and make the various modifications while the lower part shows a preview of what the frontend will look like after the modifications have been applied. To view a full page version of the preview, Click on “Expand Preview” as shown below:
As you make changes to your blog template design, you can instantly see what it would look like on the frontend. The upper part is where all the action takes place so let us look closer at it.
On the left hand side you can find various sub-links: Templates, Background, Layout and Advanced. Within these sublinks are further options that enable you to make fine grained changes to your design. We will look at each sublink one by one. Right now we are currently on the “Templates” sub-link where we can see some designs. A template is the general design that you can apply to your blog. The row of big boxes at the top contains the various designs or templates available. The first big box with the caption “Live on Blog” is the current template that is active on your blog at the moment.

To the right of the “Live on Blog” box are four other boxes. These are some of the templates that are available. Click on the right arrow after the last box to reveal even more templates.
When you click on any of the boxes, you find yet another row of smaller boxes below it. With these smaller boxes you can select various colour schemes for the theme.
Now click on each box and notice how the preview on the lower part of the screen changes. If you are on a slow connection, the preview may take a few seconds to load so be patient. You can now see that the template designer provides you with infinite choices and possibilities for styling your blog, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Like I mentioned earlier, the template designer is a very powerful utility that allows you to make very extensive modifications to the way your website looks.

Templates that are light in colour are known to work best when you want to use advertising on the website to make money. So if you are designing a website that you wish to use an advertising program such as AdSense on, go for the lighter colours and simpler designs. Do not use a background image and let your outer background always be white or light in colour. Too many pictures and images on a page tend to distract visitors from the adverts. In my experience, I’ve found out that a white background works best for me. When you are designing a website for purposes other than making money with AdSense (maybe like for a company), then you can use background images and colours. As mentioned earlier, using Adsense and other methods to make money with a blog is not discussed in this guide. If you will like to learn how to make money online with blogs and other methods, we have explained it in great detail in our e-Tutor package. We are currently running a special bonanza right now so if you are lucky you might still be able to get this ebook package at one-third the normal price. To learn more, visit www.ng44.com/ebiz Moving forward, the main actions that we are going to perform now are to select any theme, remove the background image (if any) and change the outer background colour to white. As we make changes to the design, we are able to see a preview of what our blog will look like if we apply that design. Let us now start by selecting any template. We’ll use the “Watermark” template for this example. Click on the template and under the sub design options, select the last one on the right.

Now you can see that your preview has changed. If the preview does not change immediately, you need to wait for a few seconds because your internet connection is probably slow. Next we click on “Background” from the left menu to view options for the background.
This template currently has a pink background image. Click on the pink box under “Background Image” and the below screen pops up. Blogger provides a very rich gallery of background images that we can use for our blog. You also have the ability to upload an image from your PC.
However, remember we said that we don’t want to use any background image so we click on the blue “Cancel” Button to return to the previous screen, then we click “Remove image” and if a message asks you if you want to remove the image, click “OK”:

Now you can see under “Background Image” we now have “None” and the colour has changed to red. You can also see that the preview background is now also red. What this means is that you no longer have a background image but your background colour is red.
Remember also that we want a white background so we shall now change the background colour. To do this, click on the “Advanced” link on the left menu and then click on “Backgrounds”
Here we can see the red colour under Outer background and also the Footer Background is pink. The numbers beside the colours are the computer codes associated with those colours. View the entire preview to see where the red and pink colours are, then come back here so that we can change the colours. To change a colour, click on the coloured box and select the colour that you want from the colour palette that shows up.

You can see that the blog title is now very faint and that your description is no longer visible. The reason for this is that both the blog title and description are white in colour so they will not be very visible because we

have changed our background colour to white also. To remedy this, we must change the colour of the title and description. Click on “Blog Title”
You can see various settings for the title and description. The font means the style of writing. Change the title colour and Description colour to something darker e.g. black or gray, then try different font styles and sizes to see what they look like. Note: The sub-links under the different links on the left hand of the screen (especially Advanced) contain a lot of options for customizing various aspects of your design so I suggest that you play around with them and see what they do.
The red dotted lines in the preview demarcate the area that is currently being modified. When you’ve made your selection, click on “Apply to Blog” to activate it for your blog.

Blogger Custom Templates What I have explained in this chapter are just the most basic methods and settings for using the Blogger template designer. The tutorial in this guide creates a very basic blog with a simple design. Because of the wide variety of design options available from the template designer, it is not possible to cover every possible option so it is left for you to research and experiment with your designs to find out what will work best for you. Generally, simple plain websites without too much gadgets and intrusive images coupled with a white background are known to generate better click rates and higher revenues than sites packed full with gadgets, pictures and colours. Blogger also allows you to use outside templates which are not part of the inbuilt templates available in the template designer. These custom templates are designed by other people and made available for use with Blogger. Some are free while some are not. To learn how to install a custom template, watch this video: http://www.bloggerblogtemplates.com/2009/01/how-to-upload-custom-bloggertemplate.html . Gadgets and Widgets A gadget is the major page element tool available for you to build new elements into the page structure of your blog and to add new functions and applications. A gadget can also be called a plug-in or widget (pronounced wejet). In Blogger, a gadget is a very useful way of adding extra functions and “special effects” to your blog. Gadgets provide you with a lot of flexibility regarding the structural arrangement and functions of your blog frontend. Gadgets can be added to any of the zones on your page layout by clicking on “Add gadget”. Once added, a gadget can be edited, moved around on the page or removed at any time. There are many different types of gadgets available in Blogger. There are also gadgets available from other web designers and programmers that you

can use on your blog. In this section, we are going to take a closer look at gadgets and learn how to add them to our blog.
When you click on “Add a Gadget”, a smaller window pops up containing a list of gadgets from which you can pick and modify. The main window lists the basic Blogger gadgets. You can see more gadgets by clicking on the left hand menu to view Featured gadgets, Most Popular gadgets and More Gadgets. You can find a lot of useful gadgets here so I suggest that you go take your time to go through them and see what interests you.

In the layout on the previous page, “About Me”, “Followers”, “Blog Archive” are all gadgets. The big box in the middle is the gadget that controls where the actual post appears on the page. The Blog Posts gadget cannot be moved or deleted but all the others can be moved around and placed anywhere on the page. To move a gadget you can click on it and drag it across the screen to the new location where you want it to be.

Adding a Gadget Adding a gadget is very easy. Click on the “Add a Gadget” link in the zone that you would like the new gadget to appear. Remember that as explained earlier you can actually move a gadget to any zone after it has been added. As an example, let us add a “Recent Posts” gadget. The Recent posts gadget allows you to display a specified number of the most recent posts that you have made on your website. The “Recent Posts” gadget can be found under the “More Gadgets” link on the side menu
Clicking on “More Gadgets” will reveal some more of the available gadgets that we can use. Scan through the list and locate “Recent Posts”

Click on this gadget to reveal the options available. Modify the displayed options to tally with the picture below. If you like you can change “Number of Posts to Display” from 10 to 5:
Click on “Save”. If the pop up window does not disappear, click on “Save” again. At this point, you have succeeded in adding a new gadget to your blog. View the page layout and you will see that the new gadget is now visible. Check the frontend too to see how it appears there. To add other gadgets, all you need to do is follow the steps outlined in this section. I encourage you to go through the various gadgets that are available from the “Add a Gadget” popup window and you will find a lot of interesting ones. But beware, some gadgets could make your blog look ugly and some others might contain adverts from the gadget creators therefore you need to be reasonable in your choice of Gadgets that you add to your blog.

Updating Your Blog To update your blog with new information, you need to create a new post. The act of creating a new post is sometimes referred to as “composing”. It can be done from the “Posts” tab. You can get to the Posts tab by clicking on “New Post” from the dashboard. You must create a new post for each vacancy that you want to publish. Remember that if you logged out before, you will need to log in first so login now to get to the dashboard and click on “New Post”.
This will take us to a blank Compose screen:

Now click on “Compose” (1) and make sure that the icons labeled (2) are visible. The large white area labeled (3) is the actual compose area. This is where you type in or paste the information that you want to post. All your editing takes place inside this box before you publish the post. Fill in the title. The title of the vacancy is also known as the headline. This is what will show up as a link on your website that people can click on to view the post. Click on “Preview” to see what the new post will look like on your blog
Next, we move on to the bottom to set some more options for the post. Each post has something called a label associated with it. A label is a way of classifying your posts into categories. They can be very helpful in grouping related posts together and also assisting people to quickly find the information they need on your blog. You can assign more than one label to a single post. Multiple labels must be separated by commas. Always endeavour to use labels in your post where possible because it also helps in attracting visitors to your website via search engines. For our example above, our post is for a vacancy. The name of the company is AVRO Nigeria and they’re recruiting for marketing and medical related positions. Therefore as our labels, we can use:

AVRO Nigeria Jobs, Medical Jobs in Nigeria, Marketing jobs in Nigeria
When you have entered the labels, click on “Publish Post” to update your blog. You will then see the message telling you that the post has been published. Note that the “Save now” button will not publish your post but will save it as a draft which you can go back to later and work on before publishing.
To see what the new post looks like, click on “View Post”. To see it in a new window, click on the new window icon ( ) after the link. You may also want to check your homepage to see how it appears there. To make changes to the post use the “Edit post” link and to create another new post, click on “Create a new post”. To view and edit all your previous posts, use the “Edit Posts” link which is near the top of the page beside “New Post”, not the one near the bottom next to “Create a new post”

And so we come to the end of this guide. Hope you found it interesting and informative. I believe that by now you know the basics of building and hosting a free blog. With practice you can get it done in 10 minutes or less. Please do not keep this information to yourself. Share this guide with friends and those you feel might benefit from it. But remember, don’t sell it!
Now What Next? Making Money from Website Design This guide only talks about creating a free blog type of website without any computer or programming skills. This is just the tip of what you can do when you know how to design other kinds of websites like social networks, forums, CMS etc. You can make lots of money from running your own website or network of websites. You can also source for clients who want to build websites. The average fee that website designers like us charge our clients for building a website is in the range of N45,000 for a simple website to as much as N350,000 for more complicated jobs. However, the amount you charge is very much dependent on the client. If the client is a big client or wealthy concern, you can even get up to a million or more. And if it’s a small client, you can go as low as N25,000 or N45,000 (depending on the state. Baseline rates are usually higher in states like Lagos and Abuja). The interesting thing about it all is that whether you charge N50,000 or 5 Million Naira, it’s still the same amount of work that you put in. And as long as you know the right software, methods and techniques to apply, it will take you no more than 1 or 2 days to complete any kind of website. Note: There are many other ways to make money online. Website design is just one of them. If you are interested in learning about all the other ways of making money online, visit www.NG44.com/ebiz

More Testimonies from Our Students "I am from Cotonou with my sister. We are orphans and growing up was very very difficult for us. Things were so tough that many times we seriously considered going into prostitution to survive because many young girls do it here. One day while looking for a job online, we stumbled on your ebook advert. We borrowed money to buy the e-book with the mindset that if it did not work, we will travel to Nigeria for prostitution. We applied everything you taught to the French side of things because my country is French. To the Glory of God, today, exactly one year later, our story is different. We now hold seminars to train people in website design and online business and we now make far more money than we had ever imagined we would ever make in this life." Juliette and Francine Abou, Cotonou
"Things were very rough for us after I took in for our second baby. My husband lost his job and I had no job. We were just managing with the little money he saved, dreading the day when we will run out of money. Around that time, I came across your e-books and with the last money I had, I paid and started going to my friend's cafe to practice. At the onset it was tough but your words of encouragement whenever I called got me going. Today my husband and I are fully into online business. We have 14 websites and have made more than a million naira before my son was born. You came into my life and turned everything around for the better. May God continue to bless you and your family just as you have blessed others with your gift and knowledge. We named our son Eromosele in appreciation of your impact in our family" - Mrs Bose Alade-Oni, Housewife, Ilorin
