Why This Book This writing is not going to be a matter of me simply revealing how I “predicted” Super Bowl 46. I’m going to share the how, the where, the who, the everything it takes to pull off one of the best prediction events you can produce. Not only that, I will show you how to do it without spending a lot of money. In one version I will present later in this book, you will not need to invest a single penny. I want this book to be sort of a guide to those who are looking to make their first big break into media. I also want this book to help reawaken that spirit of magic in the seasoned magician who has perhaps been in a rut for years and is looking to do something new. This book will also serve as a marketing tool for those seeking that guidance. I will explain the various methods that are available to do prediction effects that cost anywhere from zero dollars and up to about $5,000.00. I will even explain how to perform one with an item you already have in your own home. I will explain the use of verbal deception, getting the venue(s), contacting the right people, setting up the “players,” and doing the needed footwork. I hope you enjoy.

E.S.P.ecially Yours,

Become Known!

So you want to get your name in print. You want to show the world you can predict future events and that there is no such thing as free will since you know what will eventually unfold. You have an idea to perform a prediction and you want to do it publicly. Have you decided what sort of prediction you’ll do? You’ll want to first figure out the type of prediction prior to pitching your amazing ability to potentially the wrong people or venue. You’ll also want to consider the timing for your publicity stunt. For instance most, if not all, media are uninterested in these publicity stunts when it’s a Congressional and Presidential Election year or the intervening Congressional elections, which take place every two years called Midterm Elections. That said, you may have a great opportunity to set the stage for doing a future Congressional or Presidential Election prediction by first doing a prediction at your local government and state government level. Some examples of local elected positions include sheriffs at the county level and mayors and school board members at the city level. Governors and lieutenant governor are elected in all

Cain / How I Predicted / 8

states. In some states, executive positions such as Attorney General and Secretary of State are also elected offices. All members of state legislatures and territorial jurisdiction legislatures are elected, state senators and state representatives/assembly members. These are just some examples of prediction possibilities at your disposal in the political circles. Once you “get your foot in the door” by doing a prediction event, many larger venues will open up to you. Let’s decide that you’ll want to perform a newspaper headline prediction. Tony Corinda stated in 13 Steps To Mentalism, "the headline prediction almost always gets results in getting a story in print, because it is personal to the newspaper." Think about that for a moment. A reporter, a photographer, an editor all have a say in what gets into that paper. Those words are the personal expressed extension of each of those individuals. A headline is typically thought over and over until virtually the last moment before print. Why? Because a change in the story could very well change the space needed for the choice of words used for the newspaper headline. So we have decided to perform a newspaper headline. What do we do now? We need a place to pull this off. So we have to find a venue. Many of us live in or around a populated area where we frequent and know a local business. Maybe even

Cain / How I Predicted / 9

know the owner by his or her first name. Utilize what and who you know! This isn’t just about doing for yourself. This is about incorporating others in a wonderful moment that’s never before been done in your area. Ask a local business if they would like your help in increasing foot traffic to their establishment. Free advertising is always welcomed by business owners. In a world where social media rules, advertising couldn’t be easier today! The fact that you’re doing a newspaper headline prediction will insure that you get featured in that very newspaper for free! Every time you give mention about the event, be sure to give mention about the venue!

When I performed my newspaper headline prediction, I actually predicted the headlines of two newspapers.

Cain / How I Predicted / 10

This gave me even more exposure. I predicted the headline to a local paper as well as the state paper. Both were done on the same day and place. Both ran stories about me and this event to be held at that particular business establishment. I had about two solid months of constant exposure. Not simply with the newspapers, but with radio and the local news station. This also gave that local business free advertising for that same duration. It is also wise to give this event purpose. Once you have the support of a local business to provide their establishment as the venue, you have to have a specific date and time when the event will be held. After you have decided on a date and time I would strongly recommend contacting a charity. That’s your choice here. I decided to help St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital when I held my newspaper prediction event. They will be such a huge help in making sure your event is a success by walking you through, step by step, what you need to know to hold a fundraising event. They will also send you a package of information about their organization so you are familiar with it. Also included will be items you will definitely need for the event – flyers, silent auction sheets, donation envelopes, etc. Do you know anyone that can showcase their talent at the event? Can you have a DJ there? How about a face-painter for kids that may be there? Many times you can find people that will donate their time just for the exposure. If you don’t know

Cain / How I Predicted / 11

a professional face-painter, go and purchase a $5 face-painting kit from the local store and ask a friend that you trust to do it for 30 minutes during the event. Just a couple ideas. I had a DJ, a face-painter, a silent auction with items like gift packages from local restaurants, a couple friends cooking hamburgers and hot dogs. I even had a gift package donated by a janitorial service! You just never know who will want to be involved if you don’t try. I tried to make it accommodating and fun for all those that came out to see this never-before-done event. I even contacted the Mayor of the town that the event was going to be held in and asked that she be a part of it. Mayors love to show they are part of the community and welcome any good press. I created a poster of myself with a clipping of the event announcement from the newspaper on my computer. I put it on a flash drive and took it to my local print shop. I ordered a large poster sized version of my creation and placed it among the silent auction items on the day of the reveal. I think I spent about $18 for the poster. On the day of the reveal, that poster was in the middle of a bidding war and would eventually raise $80. Now that you have a place, a date, and a benefit you’ll need to start the buzz.

Cain / How I Predicted / 12

I began by personally going to the newspaper companies and asking them about the paper. How often does it get printed? When will they know what the headline will be? Then I explained about the event that is coming up and what it’s for. The fact that it’s intriguing and for a good cause is pretty much a guarantee that you will do an interview immediately. You’ll most likely have a photographer/field reporter there on the day of the reveal. Be ready to do an interview right on the spot whether you make a personal visit to the newspaper company (recommended) or if you just decide to call and speak with the editor. They may want a reporter to call you later instead but always be ready for the interview. I contacted a couple radio stations and wanted to know what they thought of the event coming up. They, of course, had no clue that the event was to happen (because I hadn’t informed them until now) and they were very intrigued. A lot of times telephone interviews are the norm and you don’t have to physically be present to do them, but I love meeting people. I especially love the opportunity to personally associate myself with the people that can essentially help elevate my business. I love to network. Needless to say, the radio stations wanted me to come in to their studios at my earliest convenience and talk about the event. They wanted to know what

Cain / How I Predicted / 13

mentalism is. They wanted to know who I was, where I came from, where I perform, how people can contact me, etc. Radio is such a wonderful stage for us. It truly is the theater of the mind. I performed a few mentalism routines for the radio DJ’s as well as for a few listeners that called in. I eventually signed a contract for a six month run with Clear Channel Radio as the resident Illusionist/Mentalist on the number one radio station in the state. I appeared once a month to perform live on air and in front of a live studio audience. My show was broadcast over the airwaves to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. Everyone driving to work and tuning in heard. Everyone at home and tuning in heard. Everyone at work listening via a radio or streaming on the web heard. I couldn’t pay for that kind of advertising if I wanted to! I called the local abc television news station and informed them of the event. They referred me to one of the producers who was more than welcoming of the story. The producer wanted to know all about the event. She asked that I come into the studio about a week prior to the event and give an interview that would be recorded and then aired a day later. I did just that.

Cain / How I Predicted / 14

I wanted to target all the media outlets I could. You may not want to and that’s fine. I employed a close friend to make a Plexiglas box that would house my “prediction envelope” for two weeks. The box was clear and could be seen through on all sides. It had a padlock for the front and I would give the keys to the, then, Capt of the police dept. to hold until the day of the reveal. I placed my prediction in the envelope with a newspaper reporter taking pictures as I did it. They saw two rolled up papers going in and being sealed inside the envelope.

Cain / How I Predicted / 15

Here is one slip of paper rolled inward from both sides giving the illusion of two rolled up slips of paper.

Throughout everything, you’ll want to capture it on camera. Whether video or still pics. That way you can post images and video footage EVERYWHERE! Social proof, also known as informational social influence, is a psychological phenomenon where people assume the actions of others in an attempt to reflect correct behavior for a given situation. When I refer to “social proof” I’m referring to the evidence you have of accomplishing things in public. Post your evidence to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and the like. You cannot expect to gain exposure solely by sitting back and hoping that another story runs. Take that first newspaper article and post it everywhere. Take that video footage of you in the radio station, or television station and create multiple still shots from it then post them around as well. Make a unique video compilation and post it to YouTube. Market yourself!

Cain / How I Predicted / 16

After I placed my predictions in the clear box, the owner of the establishment secured the locked box inside his storefront window. His window already had a cage built behind it inside the store so that gave an added impression of security. In full view of the public eye, that is where the envelope stayed for two weeks.

On the day of the reveal I purposely arrived a few minutes late. I gave the impression that I was a bit nervous and hadn’t dared look at the newspapers. The Mayor was present. The Capt of the police dept. was there. Everything was as I planned. People from so many towns and few cities made their way to see if the impossible was possible. Could I really know what the future was to be? The newspaper reporters were present with their cameras at the ready. The only thing I had to do was one get that billet into the envelope. I couldn’t let anyone else open the envelope and I couldn’t use my own device to open it either. So, I

Cain / How I Predicted / 17

performed a very risky move. I do not recommend this but then again, a lot of mentalism has come from being bold. I took the Captain aside and explained I just needed a minute before going out as I was a little nervous. He said I would do fine and not to worry about anything. He shook my hand and afterward I leaned in and patted the left side of his chest and said thank you. In that moment, I slipped my black billet pencil into his breast pocket. Later I would retrieve it from his pocket in order to open the envelope and load my billet into the envelope. After I opened the envelope I placed the billet pencil into my front right pocket. Exactly as I anticipated, the Mayor (who was standing to my right) mentioned that the pencil was the Capt.’s. This was perfect as I had a regular black pencil in the front pocket of my shorts and I made a switch. I gave the Capt the regular pencil back and retained the billet pencil in my pocket.

Cain / How I Predicted / 18

After I loaded the billet while opening the envelope, I proceeded to dump the contents of the envelope into the Mayors’ hands. At this point the reporters couldn’t stop pressing that shutter button on their cameras. They had hoped to catch a switch or me palming something. Needless to say, the routine was completely thought out and they were tricked long before they took their first picture. What remained was the gasps, and applause of the people present as they heard the Mayor read what they believed to be the predictions that had been there for two weeks. What about the initial paper that was placed inside the envelope two weeks prior that looked like two

Cain / How I Predicted / 19

rolled up sheets? On it I had written, “No matter what I have written on the other slip of paper, always know that the future is yours to write.” This is the same process I used to pull off my Super Bowl 46 prediction event. I even used the same billet pencil. I’m thinking about manufacturing billet pencils since I believe I’m the last one that ever bought one before the company I dealt with sadly went out of business. If you’re interested in purchasing a billet pencil you can contact me using the contact information at the back of this book. There are many ways to perform a prediction. There is, of course, the way I did it with the

Cain / How I Predicted / 20

billet pencil. There are other ways to perform this such as with a billet knife which is an amazing tool but can cost a little bit. It’s upward of about $200. There is also a very expensive, virtually real time prediction system that can run anywhere from $3,500 to $5,000 and comes with a box and stand. I am of the opinion that if I can pull off the same routine and make it look organic and real without anything that appears to be a magic prop then that’s the route I’ll take. Nevertheless, I wanted to mention those options here. The most inexpensive way is to simply use a butter knife and attach a billet to it with a bit of adhesive. When you’re ready to load the envelope simply flick the billet off of the knife after it enters the envelope and you push it further inside. That will cost $0.00 to perform. There was a slight difference with how I employed the regular black pencil during the Super Bowl event from the newspaper headline event. Since the General

Cain / How I Predicted / 21

Manager of the establishment was a woman and she didn’t have a breast pocket I couldn’t do the same thing with her as I did with the Captain. Instead, I would place the regular black pencil on a table from time to time and ask aloud if I could borrow the pencil for one reason or another. This, of course, is a psychological subtlety. She eventually believed that the pencil belonged to her. When it came time to open the envelope I deliberately set the actual billet pencil on the table. After I used it I put it in my pocket. She, of course, asked for her pencil back. Just as I played it before, I made the switch in my front pocket for the real pencil and handed it to her. Take this information seriously. This book WILL get you into the newspapers. It WILL get you on television. It WILL get you on radio. It WILL GET YOU NOTICED….but only if you’re ready for it.
