“HOME IS WHERE YOUR STORY BEGINS” (An Essay about Family)

Family values are deservedly praised. A well-functioning family is a microcosm of society as it should work. Many problems faced by individuals had their origin in unhealthy family life and I am not an exemption. “Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts” this quote may be the best description that I can transmit to my family. I cannot say that my family is the most ideal but I can conceitedly say that my parents worked hard for us to be the person that we are right now. My family originated from San Sebastian and Sulangan Catbalogan Samar. They are raised by their parents through hard effort because they are both came from an underprivileged family. This may be seen in the type of rearing they did to us. I have four other siblings—two older brothers and two younger sister. Therefore, I am the middle child or sometimes referred us “the troubled child”. Because of my parents’ social and economic background the nature of upbringing that they possess are very conservative and authoritarian. My mother was the disciplinarian while my father has the “iron hand”. Because of my stubbornness, I am always the center of penalty. The peace and progress of a family depend upon its members. If the members are good, the family gets prestige, as my parents always thought. So, when my brothers graduated they also expected me to graduate on time. But because of my so-called “happy-go-lucky” persona I ended up taking another year because of so many back subjects. In that time, I am not taking it seriously may be because of my lack of maturity and irresponsibility. After I graduated from my college, my father was pressuring me to take up Law. Instead of doing what they want me to do, I immediately apply for work to be able to escape my father plans. While I was working, I was able to found my one true love. To make the story short, I got pregnant. Again, my parents were so disappointed. But then again, they accepted my faith and learn to trust me again. What I am pointing in this essay is that, no matter how many wrong you’ve done to your parents, your parents will always be a parent to you-- to understand you, to console you and to love you. These obstacles that I faced significantly shaped the disposition that I have at this moment. I learned to be responsible regarding my actions and to be sensitive to the feelings of others, especially to my parents. I believed that parents should be treated will enough for they gave their whole life to their children. I also learned to make my priorities based on its consequence. Thus, friends will be there in terms of needs but will

never be there in terms of trouble. I suppose that every family has their own personal struggles, and in the end, the outcome is always stronger if you deal with them as a family. My story has been told by numerous people but I am still blessed that my family has been with me through thick and thin. Right now, I am currently pursuing my Education degree which I think is my intended destination. I may not be a lawyer that my father wants me to be but I will assure him that I will be an educator who will make an enormous impact in the lives of many young minds.

ACTIVITY: Where Do you stand?  Three Valued Purposes of school: 1. To encourage students to question current practices and promote social change. 2. To lead the world in creating a peaceful global society, stressing and understanding of other cultures. 3. To teach students work ethics: punctuality, responsibility, cooperation, selfcontrol and neatness.

 Do your responses to these items and your three priority purposes cast you as a transmitter of culture or as an agent of change for restructuring society? Answer: I could say that I am more of an agent of change for restructuring society. Each of us has the responsibility to change the world for its advantage. If we will promote cooperation and provide the students with proper knowledge, problems in the society will diminish.  By encouraging students to question current practices it will unable them to be physically and mentally aware of the things that is happening in their environment. It may not only promote social change but social order as well.  Through leading the world in creating a peaceful global society, stressing and understand of other culture, you are creating a more harmonious global environment for all. It may also provide consensus from different parts of the world.  If teachers will instruct students the value of work ethics, they will be able to love and give importance to their profession. They will be able to adhere to the rules and guideline more effectively and efficiently by giving significance to their vocation.
