3 Read and and write Ma (Mastodon), Mo (Mosasaur) or Me (Megalodon). Sometimes, more than one answer is possible. Mastodon

Mosasaur

Megalodon

Mastodons were very big animals that looked like elephants or mammoths. Some mastodons had four tusks: two big ones and two small ones. Mastodons had fur and they were about three metres tall. They ate leaves and plants. They lived in Asia, Eastern Europe and North America during the Ice Age. Mastodons disappeared about 10,000 years ago, but we don’t know why.

Mosasaurs became extinct 65 million years ago. Mosasaurs weren’t dinosaurs, but they were similar to snakes or lizards. Mosasaurs were about 15 metres long, and they lived in water. They had long tails and they could swim well. They didn’t have fur. They hunted fish and other animals. Most mosasaur fossils are in Europe and North America.

Megalodons were very big sharks that became extinct 1.6 million years ago. Megalodons were about 20 metres long and weighed between 50–100 tons*! They had very big, sharp teeth and they ate big animals including whales, dolphins and fish. They didn’t have fur. There are megalodon fossils all around the world.

3 Read and write. From Galileo’s telescope to Hubble About 400 years ago, Galileo made one of the first telescopes. With his telescope, he could look at the planets, the moon and the Sun more closely. He discovered a lot of interesting things. For example, he saw that there are mountains on the moon and he discovered Jupiter’s satellites. He also saw the rings around Saturn. Today, there are more powerful telescopes than when Galileo was alive. One of the biggest and most important telescopes is Hubble. This telescope is in space and it’s very shiny. It travels around Earth very quickly. It’s about 13 metres long. Hubble takes photos of stars and planets and sends them back to scientists on Earth. It started taking photos in 1990. Today, thousands of scientists and astronomers use the Hubble telescope to study space.

1 Galileo made his telescope about ________________________. 2 He looked at ________________________ , the moon and the Sun with his telescope. 3 Galileo’s telescope was less ________________________ than Hubble. 4 Hubble travels around ________________________. 5 Hubble is one of ________________________ telescopes. 6 Hubble sends ________________________ back to scientists on Earth.

4 Read and write.

The California Gold Rush Between 1848 and 1855, lots of people travelled to California to look for gold. They wanted to become rich. The first person who discovered gold was James Marshall. He found it in a river near the city of Coloma. He tried to keep it a secret, but soon a lot of people knew about it. Before the gold rush, there were more than 10,000 people living in California. In 1848, about 6,000 people arrived. They came from many different places in the world. But why did they all want to find this metal? Well, like silver, it’s hard and shiny, and it’s used for making lots of different things. It’s very difficult to find gold because there isn’t a lot of it. Today, earrings, rings and bracelets are made of gold. Gold is also used for making smartphones, tablets and even cars! But they’re very expensive!

4 Read and circle. My teacher is a robot What do you think? Will robots teach children in the future? It’s possible. In South Korea scientists are working on a robot to teach English to their students. They want to create a robot that looks like a person. The robot’s face changes when it’s angry, happy or tired. It will have arms and it will write on the board. It will speak and help students with their pronunciation. The scientists created an example of this robot teacher. It’s got bright colours and it looks more like a penguin than a person. Scientists think that students will like the robot teachers a lot because they will think they’re toys. They say that students will listen to their robot teacher in class. 1 Scientists are making a robot for British / South Korean / American students. 2 The robot will have different expressions / the same face / an angry voice. 3 It will do things parents / teachers / students do. 4 Students will write / speak / read better with the robot. 5 The example robot doesn’t look like a person / an animal / a bird. 6 Students won’t learn / have fun / get bored with the robot teacher. 3 Read and write correct sentences. Here are some ideas about how you can help at home and learn about different jobs at the same time. Chef: Chefs have to wear a white uniform and they work in a kitchen. If you want to be a chef when you’re older, you can practise by helping to cook dinner at home. Chefs have to know how to use kitchen equipement safely, too, so you can ask your family to teach you. You can even practise by inventing your own recipes. Vet: Do you want to be a vet when you’re older? If you love animals, you can be a pet sitter – you look after other people’s animals, such as cats, fish and birds when they go on holiday. The animals can stay with you in your house, or an adult can help you look after them in the animals’ homes. Mechanic: A person who works in a garage is a mechanic. It’s a dirty job, but you don’t have to work at night or in an office. If you want to be a mechanic, you can learn more by washing your parents’ cars.

My dad says there are big fish and whales here, but I haven’t seen any. I’ll keep looking. I’ve taken some great photos, and I’ve learnt ‘capoeira’ – it’s a type of martial art and dance. I’m not very good at it. I’ve also tried some new fruit, like guarana, goiaba and papaya. See you in two days! Ann P.S. I’ve bought a T-shirt for you. I hope you like it!

4 Read and answer. Prehistoric people lived thousands of years ago in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. We know about them because scientists found fossils. They lived in caves and made fire using a special stone called flint. They used stones, wood and bones to make tools. They hunted large animals. They also collected plants and fruit to eat. Prehistoric people didn’t have clothes. They wore animal fur to keep warm. They couldn’t talk like we do today. They couldn’t read or write, either.

If you can’t play a musical instrument, don’t worry, because you can also sing. The Park Stables: Would you rather go horse riding or have a picnic on your birthday? Come to our beautiful stables, and you can do both! Up to ten children can ride at the same time. We take food and drinks with us, ride the horses for two hours in the park, and then have a picnic by the lake. At the end of the day, if it’s very hot, we can have an ice lolly. The train is usually full. A lot of people like reading books or watching videos on their mobile phones. Yesterday, I sat next to a boy who had a shiny, expensive phone. He was very kind – he let me play with his phone! When we got to Highgate station, the boy jumped up and said, ‘Oh no! It’s my stop!’ and ran out of the train. I shouted, ‘Wait! Your phone!’ but he didn’t hear me. My dad said, ‘Don’t worry, I can take the phone to the police station.’ After school, my dad picked me up. The first thing he said was, ‘Guess who came to my clinic this morning? The boy who forgot his phone!’ I didn’t understand. ‘He’s my patient!’
