Three Purifications

The Yoga of the Three Purifications of Shri Chakrasamvara Introduction According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s instructions, it is best to perform the Vajrasattva Meditation at the beginning of this practice. However, if one has time constraints and one already engages in a Vajrasattva practice on a daily basis in the continuum of another Highest Yoga Tantra sadhana (whether Vajrasattva or another deity), it is permissible to skip this section and instead, after reciting the lines for taking refuge and generating bodhichitta, to begin directly with the actual Yoga of the Three Purifications, beginning with the section on the purification of the mind.

Refuge and Bodhichitta At all times I take refuge In Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha; In all of the three vehicles, In the dakinis of secret mantra yoga, In the heroes, heroines, and empowering goddesses, In the great beings, the bodhisattvas, And above all, at all times, I take refuge in my spiritual master. I myself will become Heruka For the sake of all living beings, And then I shall lead all them all To Heruka’s supreme state. (3x)

Three Purifications

Vajrasattva Meditation From a PAM on my crown comes a lotus. From AH comes a moon seat, on top of which, from HUM, appears a five-spoked white vajra marked at the center by HUM. Lights radiate from the HUM, accomplish the two purposes, and then return. The vajra is completely transformed into white Vajrasattva, having one face and two hands, holding vajra and bell. He sits in the cross-legged vajra position and embraces the consort, white Dorje Nyemma, who has one face and two hands, holding curved knife and skullcup. Both are draped in silks and various precious jeweled ornaments. Both have an OM at the crown, an AH at the throat, and a HUM at the heart. From the HUM at the heart, light radiates and invites wisdom beings similar to themselves. JAH HUM BAM HO

They become non-dual. Again lights radiate from the HUM at the heart and invite the empowering deities. “All Tathagatas, I request you to bestow the actual empowerment upon them.” Following this request, the empowering deities hold aloft vases filled with the nectar of exalted wisdom. OM SARVA TATHAGATA ABHISHEKATA SAMAYA SHRI YE HUM

Thus, empowerment is conferred. The bodies are filled with the nectar of exalted wisdom. The excess water on the crown is completely transformed into Akshobya, who adorns the top of the head. Around the HUM on the moon at Vajrasattva’s heart appears the 100-syllable mantra, circling around the rim.

“Bhagavan Vajrasattva, please cleanse all negativities and obscurations of myself and all sentient beings and purify all degenerated and broken commitments.” Having been entreated in this way, light radiates from the mantra garland and HUM at Vajrasattva’s heart. The negativities and obscurations of all sentient beings are purified, and pleasing offerings are made to all buddhas and their children. All their good qualities of body, speech, and mind return with the light rays, and dissolve into the HUM and mantra garland. Thereby, a stream of white nectar descends from the place of union of the father and mother. Entering through my Brahma aperture, it fills my whole body with the nectar of exalted wisdom. By this cleansing, all my negativities and obscurations of the three doors are purified. OM VAJRA HERUKA SAMAYA / MANUPALAYA / HERUKA TVENOPATISHTHA / DRIDHO ME BHAVA / SUTOSHYO ME BHAVA / SUPOSHYO ME BHAVA / ANURAKTO ME BHAVA / SARVA SIDDHIM ME PRAYACCHA / SARVA KARMA SUCHAME CHITTAM SHRIYAM KURU HUM / HA HA HA HA HO / BHAGAVAN / VAJRA HERUKA MAME MUNCHA / HERUKA BHAVA / MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH HUM PHAT (21x)

“Through ignorance and delusion, I have broken and degenerated my commitments. Guru Protector, give refuge! Chief holder of the vajra, embodiment of great compassion, I take refuge in the foremost of beings.” Vajrasattva replies: “Child of the lineage, all of your negativities, obscurations, and broken commitments have been purified.” Then Vajrasattva dissolves into me. My three doors become inseparable from the body, speech, and mind of Vajrasattva. Meditate strongly here on the unification of your own mind and the mind of Vajrasattva

Three Purifications

The Yoga of the Three Purifications The Yoga of the Three Purifications to purify the three doors is as follows:

Purification of the mind The “HE” of “SHRI HERUKA” stands for the mind, the source of everything, [and] for the selflessness of phenomena, found by examining the empty nature of the causal mind. “RU” stands for the selflessness of persons, which is free of the web of a fabricated self [that causes us to] conceptually apprehend a self of persons. “KA” stands for the object, suchness, and the subjective mind, abiding neither unharmoniously nor separately. “SHRI” stands for non-dual exalted wisdom, totally inseparable from emptiness, its object: This is the meaning of EVAM. Thinking in this way, purify the mind.

Purification of the body Within this sphere of emptiness, I arise instantly as dark blue Heruka, with one face and two arms, holding vajra and bell. I stand with my right leg outstretched and embrace my wisdom consort, red Vajravarahi, who has one face and two arms and is holding a curved knife and skullcup. SHRI HERUKO HAM (3x)

Saying this three times with the blissful thought of benefiting all living beings, holding the divine pride of the physical appearance, purify the body.

Purification of the speech OM A AA I II U UU RI RII LI LII E AI O AU AM AH / KA KHA GA GHA NGA / CHA CHHA JA JHA NYA / TA THA DA DHA NA / TA THA DA DHA NA / PA PHA BA BHA MA / YA RA LA VA / SHA SHA SA HA KSHA HUM HUM PHAT (3x)

The mantra garland, together with rays of light, circles counterclockwise three times at my navel. The abiding assembly of deities of the three wheels radiate out from my right nostril into the ten directions, dispelling all interferences, and then return through my left nostril, dissolving into the mantra garland at the navel. Imagining this, purify the speech.

Praises and Requests Glorious Heruka, your body with disciplined attachment, Blazes throughout the three realms, With the light of thousands of blue light rays and 100,000 suns, May the many passionate beings on your bodily parts All simultaneously dance. The goddesses are valid. The commitments are valid. The teachings expressed by that are also supremely valid. Due to these truths, may they become causes for us to receive the protection of the goddesses.

Dedication and Verses of Auspiciousness May I myself become Heruka For the sake of all living beings, And lead every one of them To Heruka’s supreme state. If I do not obtain this supreme state in this life, May I, at the time of death, be received By the Lord, the Consort, and their entourage, With clouds of offerings, the sound of pleasant music, And many wondrous signs. Then at the end of the clear light of death, May I be led to the pure land of Kechara, The realm of the knowledge-holders who have accomplished the supreme method, And there may I swiftly complete this profound path. May intensive dedication to the teachings and practice of Chakrasamvara increase, And may this passage for those who want liberation, Crossed by tens of millions of powerful yogis, Never decline, but last for a very long time. May the heroes and yoginis, together with their entourages, Who abide in the twenty-four supreme places of this world, And who possess the power to accomplish this method without obstruction, Always and unceasingly assist us.
