INTERVIEW WITH HEIDIMAETRIX Hi Heidi, Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi I’m Heidi Mae, I grew up all across the U.S and Canada on tour with my family. A few years ago I started making parody music videos with my younger brother (Joseph) and sister (Miranda) Which led to the three of us Cosplaying together. I tour off and on all year long. In my time off I’m either working on my next cosplays, playing RPG’s on my PlayStation, or reading old scifi books from the 50’s-80’s. 50’s-80’s. I love photography and editing! It’s a huge passion of mine, so I take and edit all my sibling photos. I’m also a huge coffee addict! Seriously caffeine is the way to my heart! What were some of your key influences when getting into cosplay?
My biggest influence in getting into cosplay was my friend in the 501st legion. It’s funny because I’d actually been cosplaying for a while in my music videos without ever realizing it! But I attended my first con “Anime Saint Louis” in cosplay last April and I’ve been hooked ever since! What’s been your favorite cosplay project so far?
My favorite Cosplay so far has to be “Suicide Squad Harley Quinn” I spent so much time researching and developing pieces of her cosplay. And had some amazing individuals collaborate with me to help create some of the more complicated pieces. Honestly. Honestly. The sense of community and camaraderie has to be my favorite thing about cosplaying. Which places would you recommend to other cosplayers who are looking for quality items.
When I start a new cosplay the first thing I do is search all the local antique and thrift stores. I’m a huge advocate of recycling and repurposing old materials, and giving them new life in my cosplays. My Harley Quinn’s base shirt is a girls size l arge tee shirt from the Goodwill. And my bat is an antique bat from my Nana. I think material is incredibly important when it comes to making the character feeling real at cons, and i n photos. Leather photographs and wears different than vinyl. And thrifting is a very good way to get leather at a fraction of the cost. If you’re willing to put some work into it. Also don’t be afraid to reach out for help i f you ever are unsure of what to do. Cosplayers are typically very friendly and eager to lend a helping hand! If money wasnt an object.... what amazing cosplay i tem would you love to have.
If money wasn’t an object I’d love to do Ena Hoshijiro from “Knights of Sedonia” winged KOSMOS from Xenosaga, Ann from Persona 5 and a cosplay of an original design I created almost ten years ago. How do you find out about cosplay events, and which are your favorites to attend?
Unfortunately because I tour so extensively for work, I’m unable to attend the majority of events. I was gutted to miss out on X-Files night at the the Saint Louis science science center this Febraury. Febraury. I try to make it to as many as possible possible though. You have other family members into cosplay aswell! Tell us a little what that’s like?
It’s great having my brother and sister cosplay with me! We’ve worked together our whole lives. And are extremely close. It’s also amazing having them to do group cosplays with. Although sometimes my sister and I have to play Rock Paper Scissors of we both want to cosplay the same character! But I’m very lucky and grateful to have their support, friendship, and help! I honestly wouldn’t have nearly as much fun without them. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Cosplaying is great. Cosplaying with your friends is even great. But Cosplaying with family is a dream come true. We’re actually working on getting our 67 year old father into making a special appearance! If you were being held prisoner... which movie character would you have save you? and why?
If I was being held prisoner I would want Mulder from the X-Files to rescue me. Yes that’s sort of cheating since X-Files was a show. But they had two movies too! But I’d want him to rescue me because I’ve had quite a bit of a crush on him since I was 15! And always wished that he’d hold me like he held Scully when you carried her from the Alien ship in the first movie! How can our fans see more of you?
You can follow me on Instagram Instagram and snapchat snapchat @HeidiMaetrix I’d love to talk to you guys on there! Your photos in this this issue are stunning! We look forward to seeing more of you in Heroes & Villains of Cosplay. @HeidiMaetrix as Harley Quinn - Photography by @keyofjay and @lilshootie
