SAFEGUARDS

ACTION

Pump malfunction

P125 failure would result in no cooling water running through the heat exchanger.

Closure of V 22 18

Closure of this valve would increase the pressure of the condensate line exiting E113. This would also cause an increased pressure in V147. This would change the pressure gradient and force the liquid onto the vacuum lines causing mixing in the system. There is potential for vessel E113, V147 and V150 to damage and rupture….

Install a flow meter across the value to ensure there is always flow when the system is under operation.

Closure of V 22 19

This would also cause an increased pressure in V148. This would change the pressure gradient and force the liquid onto the vacuum lines causing mixing in the system. V148 and V150 could damage and rupture….

Install a flow meter across the value to ensure there is always flow when the system is under operation.

Closure of V 22 17

The closure would cut off cooling water supply to E113. This would result in no condensate being formed in the shell and tube heat exchanger.

Overheating in E112

Due to overheating in E112 more than the required/optimal amount of vapour is fed into E113 uncondensed. This increases the flow rate of condensate in

High temperature and pressure alarms. Also ensure good maintenance.

the stream and resulting in a increase in pressure and filing up V150 at a fatser rate then estimated. This would also put increase pressure on V147.

Less flow

More cooling water supplied to E113.

More than optimal amount of vapour condenses. This increases the flow rate of condensate in the stream and resulting in a increase in pressure and filing up V150 at a fatser rate then estimated. This would also put increase pressure on V147

Pressure transmitter placed on the inlet to the pump. Drain on V150.

High pressure alarms. Also ensure good maintenance. Flow meter with a high level alarm on V150

Temperature of cooling water less than estimated

More than optimal amount of vapour condenses. This increases the flow rate of condensate in the stream and resulting in a increase in pressure and filing up V150 at a fatser rate then estimated. This would also put increase pressure on V147

Temperature indicator

Temperature alarms connected to the indicator. Flow meter with a high level alarm on V150

Less cooling water to E113.

This would result in less condensate being formed in the shell and tube heat exchanger

Leaks in pipeline

N-heptane hazardous. It is flammable and can cause skin irritation. This causes a lot of potential risk if released.

Ambient temperature rises. Either environmental such as a heat wave or human error such as using a fire torch or welding machine near the pipelines and heat exchangers. Cooling water’s efficiency reduces.

N-heptane is flammable. And increase in the temperature can build up pressure or act as a ignition source.

Educate people on the hazards of n-heptane. Ensure it is a no smoking zone and people wear protective clothing. Install flow indicators between very long pipelines.

CONSIDER REVERSE FLOW High temperature

Temperature indicators

Higher temperature alarms attached with indicator. Educate staff on the hazards of n-heptane. Ensure it is a no smoking zone and people wear protective clothing.
