NAMO GURU HAYAGRIVAYA

Having respectfully paid homage to the magnificent great powerful lotus, the pervading guru Vajradharma, I will explain clearly and concisely the meaning of the actions of the deity. Herein is presented a condensed daily recitation of the activities of the special supreme deity, the destroyer qualified as gone beyond, the Lotus Great Controller Hayagriva, the nine-deity extremely secret wrathful blood drinker. This sadhana is divided into three sections: the preliminary practices, the actual practice, and the concluding practices.

The Preliminary Practices Refuge Until we attain the state of the pervading lord Samantabhadra, I and all sentient beings without exception who equal the sky Take refuge in the Three Jewels – the essence of Rare Sublimity – And in the entire assembly of mandala deities. (3x)

Generating Bodhichitta In order to place all the limitless transmigrating beings, my kind mothers, In the state of peerless buddhahood, I am going to practice the activities of this profound method Of the Great Controller, the Extremely Secret Wrathful One. (3x)

Meditation on the Four Immeasurable Thoughts May all sentient beings have happiness. May all sentient beings be free from suffering. May all sentient beings forever abide in happiness. May all transmigratory beings attain enlightenment. (3x or more)

Requesting Prayer to the Lineage Lamas and Collecting Merits The eight-limb practice and so forth OM VAJRA SAMAYA HUM JAH

To Limitless Illumination [Amitabha Buddha], to the Great Powerful Deity, To Padmasambhava, Vairochana, and the assembly of treasure discoverers; To Drubthob Darchyar and so forth, and to all the root and lineage gurus, I make requests. I prostrate to the vajra master and the glorified buddhas abiding in the three times. To the Three Jewels, who are the field of our dependence, I take refuge with a non-dualistic mind. Please accept these pure offerings, Those actually performed and those emanated from my mind. I confess each and every vice, the obstacles severing the stream of attainments. I rejoice in the Dharma, pure [emptiness], the three circles of the ten directions, [buddhas, bodhisattvas, and sentient beings] And in all conduct performed without attachment. I generate the mind of complete enlightenment: The ultimate sphere of dharmakaya purified of ignorance and hallucinations And devoid of the stains of the four extremes: eternalism, nihilism, and so forth. I and all limitless sentient beings Offer our bodies to those abiding in the three times (gurus, buddhas, and so on).

Driving Away the Obstacles and Establishing the Border OM VAJRA KRODHA HAYAGRIVA HULU HULU HUM PHAT

From my heart, clarified as the holy body of the Supreme Horseheaded Hero, Emanated Wrathful Ones, weapons, and a great conflagration Which dispelled all hindering spirits and interferers from the limits of all directions And gathered back, became the tent of vajra protection. Blessing all the offering substances RAM AH

From my heart syllable HRIH, RAM emanates. From this, flames in the nature of transcendental wisdom also emanate.

AH is transformed into heaps of unborn blazing light,

Purifying all the stains of the collected offering and increasing them. RAM YAM KHAM

Out of the non-objectified state of emptiness, From my heart emanates fire, wind, and water, That burn, dispel, and wash away all faults of the offering substances. In all the qualified and expansive, bliss-supporting vessels, Offerings of water, sense enjoyments, and music are gathered like clouds. The wisdom nectar of choicest medicines blaze and swirl. Heaps of tormas of flesh, blood, bones Emanate sensory enjoyments. The ocean of rakta (blood) is stirred by waves. Everything is mixed inseparably with the transcendental wisdom substances And becomes an uncontaminated, inexhaustible, bliss-giving treasury.

The Actual Body of the Practice Generating the Supporting Mandala and the Supported Deity out of the Three Concentrations HUM From the vast expanse of ultimate nature.

All the various phenomena appear naturally. They do not have nature [inherent existence], They are like the reflection of the moon in water. Everything is pervaded by great compassion. The heart wisdom appears in the shape of HUM. OM SHUNYATA JNANA SAMATI HUM OM DHARMADHATU SAMATI HUM OM JNANA VAJRA SAMATI HUM HUM SPHARANA PHAT / SAM HARANA HUM EH YAM RAM KHAM SUM KEM BHRUM

All the seed syllables and mantras completely transform into the five elements, Mount Meru, and the spontaneously actualized celestial mansion. OM AGNE MANDALA HUM

From EH appears a light blue sky mandala, triangular in shape. Above it is: YAM KARMA RAKSHA MANDALA HUM YAM transforms into a smoky wind mandala, semi-circular

and rippling.

RAM JVALA MANDALA HUM RAM transforms into a red fire mandala, triangular and blazing. KHAM RAKTA MANDALA HUM KHAM transforms into a red-black ocean of blood, circular and

pulsating. SUM SUKME MANDALA HUM SUM transforms into a yellow earth mandala, square and stable. KEM NIRITI MANDALA HUM KEM transforms into a square, white Mount Meru of skeletons. BHRUM VISHVA VISHUDDHE JNANA CHAKRA MANDALA HUM BHRUM is transformed into a celestial mansion, in the nature

of wisdom. It is square with four doors, walls, plinth, frieze, garlands and half-garlands, A collection of dentils, parapet, pillars, beams, arched roof, archways, and so forth. It is endowed with perfect dimensions and all characteristics, Splendidly beautified, glorious, and grand with the cemeteries and jeweled ornaments. Outside are the lotus fence, the eight great cemeteries, The vajra fence, and blazing heaps of fire like that at the end of the eon. In the center of the mansion is a red-black triangular mandala. In this is a red half-circle with a fence of dry skulls. Beyond that is a four-spoked wheel, in the color of its direction, Completely surrounded by a circular garland of wet human heads.

On the central triangle, on the four spokes, and the four doors is: PAM PADMA MANDALA PAM transforms into a exquisite variegated lotus seat. AH CHANDRA MANDALA AH transforms into a full moon mandala. MA SURYA MANDALA MA transforms into a radiantly blazing sun mandala. MAHA RUTRA BAM

In the center is a seat composed of male and female black maras. DEVA BAM

On the eastern spoke is a seat composed of male and female smell eaters (gandharvas). [There is a seat for the male wrathful one and a similar seat for the female one.] YAMA BAM

On the southern spoke is a seat composed of male and female vampires. NAGA BAM

On the western spoke is a seat composed of male and female naga kings. YAKSHA BAM

On the northern spoke is a seat composed of male and female harm givers (yakshas).

HRIH MAM

Onto the central seat descended a syllable HUM, Which transformed into a red-black syllable HRIH and a blue syllable MAM. SPHARANA PHAT

Light emanated from them, pleased with offerings the assemblies of arya beings And purified every single negativity and obscuration of sentient beings. SAM HARANA HUM

Returned back, the light absorbed into both seed syllables. TISHTHA VAJRA

They became inseparable and stable. OM VAJRA KRODHA HAYAGRIVA HULU HULU HUM PHAT OM MAHA KRODHISHVARI HUM PHAT

From both HRIH and MAM I became completely transformed Into the holy body of Hayagriva, the Lotus Great Controller. I have three faces: right white, left green, and center red-black. On the crown is a green horse head With a white blaze, and a red mane with a yellow cloth hanging from it, Whinnying with a shrill sound toward the ten directions. The faces all have three round bloodshot eyes. The brows and beards are yellow, shining like lightning. The hair is matted, dark brown (like chocolate) and beautified by standing upright.

I, Hayagriva, have six arms, the first right hand holds a lotus And the left holds a skull filled with blood With these arms I embrace the Mother of Great Bliss. The remaining two right hands hold an iron hook and a club. The remaining two left hands hold a lasso and a blazing sword. The upper part of the holy body wears a human skin and a wet elephant hide. The lower part of the holy body is adorned with a tiger skin skirt. The dried skull head ornament is topped with jewels. The holy body is adorned with bone ornaments, A triple garland each of fifty human heads – dried, wet, and withered – Jewels, and the four types of snakes. The holy body is smeared with fingerprints of fat, Drops of blood, and heaps of human ashes. Having the garuda wings of complete victory over the three realms. Having four legs and standing with the right legs bent In the expression of the nine-fold dancing posture. Entwining the right side of the lord is the secret mother, the lotus dancing one, The color of her holy body is blue-black, with one face and two arms, Three eyes agape, and the mouth snarling with bared fangs. The hair, matted and thick, is black like the gloom of darkness. The right hand, holding a heart, embraces the Father. The left hand, holding a great conch shell (skull) filled with an ocean of blood, Makes offering to the mouth of the great magnificent lord. In this way visualize clearly the Lord Father-Mother.

Blessing the three places OM AH HUM

At the crown of both the father and the mother is a moon disc, At their throats a lotus, and at their hearts a sun disc, Respectively adorned with a white OM, a red AH, and a blue HUM, Thus blessing the body, speech, and mind.

Receiving the empowerment OM BANDHA KAPALA BHRUM HUM OM SVA AM HA

The head is adorned with a five skull turret: on the crown there is a blue HUM; At the forehead a white OM; above the right ear a yellow SVA; At the back of the head red AM; and above the left ear a green HA. HUM VAJRA HERUKA OM BUDDHA HERUKA SVA RATNA HERUKA AM PADMA HERUKA HA KARMA HERUKA

The five seed syllables are completely transformed into the blood drinkers of the five types (the five lords of the buddha families) become the full ornaments of the crown. OM ABHISHANCHA HUM

Being in Union and Generating All the Surrounding Deities HUM BAM

At the Father’s secret place a syllable HUM takes the aspect of a five-pronged vajra. At the Mother’s secret place a syllable PAM becomes an eightpetaled lotus. The openings of both secret places are blocked by PHAT. SAMAYA HOH / SAMAYA STVAM ANURAGAYAMI / ANURAGAYAHO JAH HUM BAM HOH

With mutual desire the Father and Mother engage in union. The sound of great bliss that follows invokes the buddhas and their children. They enter the mouth of the Father and dissolve into light at the heart. BODHICHITTA SPHARANA PHAT

Through the path of the vajra they descend into the Mother’s space (womb), And become the essence of the eight syllable drops. HUM HUM HUM HUM JAH HUM BAM HOH SPHARANA PHAT SAMHARANA HUM OM VAJRASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT

On the seat of the eastern spoke there is a syllable HUM That transformed into the Great Vajra Having Control Who has a white wrathful holy body,

One face, and two arms. The right hand holds a vajra, And the left, a club in a manner of great grandeur. OM RATNASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT

On the seat at the southern spoke, there is a syllable HUM That transformed into the Great Jewel Having Control With a yellow-blue wrathful holy body, One face, and two arms. The right hand holds a jewel, And the left, a hook in a hooking manner. OM PADMASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT

On the seat at the western spoke, there is a syllable HUM That transformed into the Great Lotus Having Control. With a red wrathful holy body, One face, and two arms. The right hand holds a lotus, And the left, a noose in a binding manner. OM KARMASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT

On the seat at the northern spoke, there is a syllable HUM That transformed into the Great Best Action Having Control With a green-red wrathful holy body. One face, and two arms. The right hand holds a sword , And the left, a trident in a stabbing manner. All of them have three eyes and are snarling with bare fangs. Their hair is dark brown, beautified, bristling, and bound by snakes. Their bodies are adorned with each and every vestment of the cemeteries. They stand with left and right legs stretched and bent respectively, amidst a mass of fire. OM VAJRA AMKUSHA JAH

On the seat of the eastern door, Is a syllable JAH, Transformed into the Hook Woman, White, with matted blood-red hair, Holding a hook, a lung, and a heart. OM VAJRA PASHA HUM

On the seat of the southern door, Is a syllable HUM, Transformed into the Noose Lady, Yellow, with matted turquoise hair, Holding a noose, a lung, and a heart. OM VAJRA SPHOTA BAM

On the seat of the western door, Is a syllable BAM, Transformed into the Iron Chain Woman, Red, with matted dark blue hair, Holding an iron chain, a lung, and a heart. OM VAJRA GANTE HOH

On the seat of the northern door, Is a syllable HOH, Transformed into the Bell Lady. Green, with matted golden hair, Holding a bell, a lung, and a heart. All four female wrathful ones have one face, two legs, and two arms. They are adorned with the vestments of the cemeteries and stand amidst a conflagration. In this way, visualize clearly the assembly of surrounding deities.

Hooking and Receiving the Wisdom Beings OM VAJRA SAMAYA HUM JAH HRIH

Light rays emanate from the syllable HRIH at my heart And implore the holy mind of the highly glorified Assembly deities of the Great Magnificent One. With compassion, please arise in your holy body From the natural abode. Because of your samaya, please be here at this place. EH HYE HI BHAGAVAN MAHAKARUNIKA TRISHYA HOH SAMAYA JAH SAMAYA STVAM

Thus invite them. Prostrate with: ATIPUHO JAH HUM BAM HOH SAMAYA STVAM

Thus request them to absorb [in the visualization] and abide.

Offering the substances HRIH To the assembly deities of Extremely Secret Wrathful Great

Controller, I respectfully offer: Drinking water, sense enjoyments, medicine, rakta, torma, and so forth, Increased into an ocean of wish-fulfilling desire objects. Please accept them with compassion.

In the same way, make the outer offerings, substituting drinking water with incense, flowers, light, perfume, food, and music. Substitute ARGHAM with VAJRA DHUPE, VAJRA PUSHPE, VAJRA ALOKE, VAJRA GANDHE, VAJRA NAIVIDYA and VAJRA SHAPTA.

Perform the annihilation offering with: NRI TRI JAH / SARVA BIGHANA SHATRUM MARAYA PHAT MAHAMAMSA / MAHARAKTA / MAHA KEM NIRITI / MAHAPANCHA AMRITA KHARAM KHAHI

[This is an offering of severing the evil mind from the body.]

Offer the torma with: MAHABALIMTA KHARAM KHAHI BHIBA HOH

Offer the five poisons, the samaya ingredients, as consecrated substances with: MAHAMAMSA KHAHI / MAHARAKTA KHAHI / MAHA KEM NIRITI KHAHI / MAHABASUTA KHAHI / MAHA GOROCHANA KHAHI

Offer the six sense pleasures with: OM RUPA / SHAPTA / GANDHE / RASA / SPARSHA / DHARMADHATU KAMAGUNA PUJA MEGHA SAMUDRA SPHARANA SAMAYE AH HUM

Praise HRIH Although not moving from the sphere of clear light,

You are the manifestation of great bliss, the [state of] unification, Displaying various emanation bodies: I prostrate to the Magnificent Supreme Stallion. Although completely free from all mental fabrications, You adopt the mode of an illusory woman To subdue by desire those who have desire: I prostrate to the Wrathful Mother. Transformation of the contaminated aggregates is the wisdom holy body Which is completely purified of delusions. You, the four Wrathful Conquerors, fully perform the four activities: To you, I prostrate. You are purified of eternalism, nihilism,and a naturally existing I. [The extreme of eternalism is samsara, the extreme of nihilism is the sorrowless state of the lesser vehicle. The way of liberating from these two is – as mention in the teachings of the Abhisamayalankara – by having wisdom you don’t abide in samsara, by having compassion you don’t abide in peace. One should stop the two extremes, eternalism and nihilism, by having wisdom realizing emptiness and by great compassion. This contains the inherent existence of the person and the inherent existence of phenomena (the aggregates). See Liberation in the Palm of your Hand by Pabongka Rinpoche or any teachings by H. H.

You are the essence of four means of drawing: [giving, speaking sweetly, working for others, and practicing what you teach] And the essence of immeasurable thought. Hooking, entering, binding, and controlling, To you, the Ladies of the Four Doors, I prostrate. In order to subdue all vicious beings You are extremely wrathful, overwhelming, and irresistible, And well-aligned like a blazing garland: I prostrate to all those who abide by the order (the protectors). Having the completely purified twelve related dependent limbs And the nature of the thirty-seven dharmas leading in the direction of enlightenment, Essence of great bliss, well completed; To that unfathomable mansion, I prostrate. Ground, fence, and tent of non-dual wisdom vajra, Having blazing heaps of wisdom fire: To that protecting wheel, I prostrate. By this virtue of offering praises to you, May I completely eliminate the obstacles of the path, May I fully complete the two accumulations in this life, And attain enlightenment, the essence of the four holy bodies.

The Practice of Graduated Dzab HUM At the heart of myself as the Wrathful Conqueror, Glorious

Supreme Stallion, On the stamens of an eight-petaled lotus, Is the heart syllable HRIH, surrounded by the mantra upon the eight petals. Light issues forth and absorbs into all the tathagatas, Giving the outer, inner, and secret offerings. Collects the attainments of holy body, speech, and mind, Purifies the stains of the three doors of sentient beings, And absorbs back into the body, speech, and mind of the yogi. [Perform the meditation combining the generation and completion stages.] HRIH VAJRA KRODHA HAYAGRIVA HULU HULU HUM PHAT OM MAHA KRODHISHVARI HUM PHAT OM VAJRASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT OM RATNASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT OM PADMASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT OM KARMASHVARA KRODHA HUM PHAT OM VAJRA AMKUSHA JAH OM VAJRA PASHA HUM OM VAJRA SPHOTA BAM OM VAJRA GHANTE HOH

Do the meditation on the sound of the shrill whinny one time. Recite the mantras of the principal deities and the retinue as much as you wish. At the end of the recitation recite the vowels and consonants, and the dependent arising heart mantra, three times each, and then the hundred-syllable mantra.

To offer in detail, divide the tsog into three parts. First offering by praising:

The Great Principal who is enriched with the power of dancing, Sensuous, heroic, and fearful; Laughing, scolding, and terrifying; Compassionate, overwhelming, peaceful, and so forth. The features of your body are extremely changeable in dance. Showing [these] to the practitioner yogi. I am offering the essential (substances) Such as the “moon,” “mamsa,” and so forth. As well as sandalwood scents.

The “essential substances” are offerings of high quality blessed in the nature of nectar. “Essential” here refers to the substances having the special qualities of color, taste, tangible objects, and power. “Taste” also refers to the supreme taste, which is sweet with a cool sensation. Like the moon, milk, or the color of mercury, they are white and pure. The power the offering objects possess is the power of being able to restore life to those who have died. “Mamsa” is defined as meat. The words “so forth” refer to various tsog substances such as wine, flowers, light offerings, fruit, incense, and so on.

Please accept all that I offer as most pure and perfect. Bless me, the yogi, [with] the supreme tangible objects of the humans, female beings. The commentary states the above as “…the human daughters,” which pertains to the consort that helps you to develop the extremely subtle wisdom, the clear light, the simultaneously born bliss and wisdom, which is the quickest method to cut the defilements.

Please make all these substance of achievement powerful (by means of) HUM and PHAT. By expressing “HUM” one is able to generate the ultimate realization of bliss and voidness in one’s mental continuum. Through expressing “PHAT” one developing ones mental continuum to be capable of eliminating the demon, self-grasping, in the sphere of emptiness. There is nothing to make the last residue (E), the Great Controller’s servant possesses the residue. The residue is not sprinkled with mouth water (E). There is a great difference between the Lord and subjects. There is nothing to mix the three aspects into one (E). In the sphere of existence there is no bad and good. By making offering, there is no reliance for the activities (E). Destroying the teaching of the Dharma wheel happened. [E = emptiness. According to Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche’s commentary, this is all related to emptiness like the Heart Sutra. According to Choden Rinpoche’s commentary: the first one is a way of expressing that one should make offering with the first pure essence although expressed negatively. ..in the middle one should enjoy the tsog… one should make the last residue… one should sprinkle with mouth water… one should mix the three into one… one should rely for the activities.] HRIH From the black-red triangular-shaped mandala the Destroy-

Original Colophon: This which is called La Chung (this text) action transformation integrated into essence of Melodious Song Pleasing the Great Controlling One of the Special Sublime Deity Lotus Great Controlling Hayagriva Extremely Secret Wrathful Blood Drinker Nine-Deities.
