PREPARING THE PATRON  Direct the patron to remove jewelry.  Be certain to fasten the cape comfortably but securely.  Avoid having the cape come in contact with the patron’s skin. STEPS IN DRAPING THE PATRON 1. Position yourself beside the patron. 2. Unfold cape and place it across patron’s body off the shoulders. 3. Fold towel by holding it on opposite corners. 4. Place towel around patron’s shoulder. 5. Position yourself behind patron. 6. Gather hair at the nape. 7. Slide towel across the back of the neck. 8. Bring towel ends around the sides then release the hair. 9. Overlap ends of towels in a criss-cross position under the chin. 10. Hold in position with dominant hand. 11. Bring the cape up to the chin. 12. Pull cape over the shoulder to the back of patron. 13. Bring one corner of the cape across the back to opposite side and fasten to cape collar. 14. Bring the other corner of the cape across the opposite side; fasten to cape collar. 15. Adjust the cape tension at the neck for comfort. 16. Adjust the towel over cape collar. LET US REMEMBER 

WHAT IS THE LESSON ABOUT? The lesson deals with correct hair analysis to determine the shampoo to be used. The hair is brushed and combed before the shampoo process, following salon techniques and procedure, hair is brushed and combed before the shampoo process to ensure safety and comfort of patrons. SHAMPOOING

Shampooing the hair is an important preliminary step for various hair treatments. The importance of a good shampoo should not be underestimated. The reputation for good shampooing builds friendly relationships with the patrons and is the foundation for future business. Shampoos are preparations for cleaning the hair and scalp. A shampoo is given both for sanitary reasons and to obtain better results in relation to other hair works. The purpose of a shampoo is to cleanse the hair and scalp. A shampoo to be effective, must remove all dirt, oils, cosmetics present and the skin debris from the scalp and hair shaft, without adversely affecting either the scalp or hair. Unless the scalp and hair are cleansed regularly, the accumulation of oil and perspiration which when mixed with natural scales and dirt offers a breeding place for disease producing bacteria. Permitting this condition to exist can lead to a scalp disorder.

Hair should be shampooed as often as necessary depending on how quickly the scalp and hair become soiled.



As a general rule, oily hair should be shampooed more often than normal or dry hair.

SELECTING THE CORRECT SHAMPOO To make an intelligent choice of shampoo, the cosmetologist should know the composition and action of the shampoo and whether it will do an effective job. To obtain this information, carefully read the label and its shampooing literature.

REQUIRED MATERIALS AND IMPLEMENTS Before giving a shampoo, gather all necessary materials and implements. There is nothing more annoying to the patron than to have the hairdresser wet her hair and leave her stranded, while she dashes out to get shampoo or other necessities. Required materials and implements are:      

HAIR BRUSHING Brushing should always be a part of both shampoo and scalp treatments with the following exceptions:    

Brushing stimulates the scalp, helps remove dust and dirt from hair and gives added sheen. Stimulation of the scalp, by brushing, helps to normalize the oil glands. The hair should receive thorough brushing whether the scalp and hair is dry or in oily condition. The comb should not be used to loosen scales from the scalp; it should always be used in disentangling the hair. To brush the hair, first part it through the center from front hairline to neck. Now part a section about a quarter inch from the center parting to the crown of the head. Holding this strand of hair in the left hand between the thumb and fingers, lay the brush (held in the right hand) with the bristles against the scalp; sweep the bristles the full length of the hair, turning the wrist slightly in doing so, and sweep to the ends of the hair. Repeat three times. Then part again, a quarter inch from the first parting and continue until the entire head has been brushed.

TOWEL DRYING THE HAIR After a shampooing and rinse, the hair may be towel dried. Remove excess moisture at the shampoo board. Drape towel over the patron’s head. Massage the scalp over the towel with the palm and fingers of both hands in a circular motion until the hair is almost dry. Comb the hair free of snarls, or tangles, starting with the ends of the hair at the back of the head.

SHAMPOOING PROCEDURE I. INTRODUCTION Shampooing is the process of cleansing the hair and scalp from the dirt and dust present on it. A thorough shampooing of the hair removes dirt, dandruff, or other cosmetics present. It also stimulates the blood circulation, nourishes the scalp and promotes hair growth. II. PROCEDURE A. PREPARATION STEPS 1. Select and arrange required materials.    

2. Wash and sanitize hands. 3. Seat patron comfortably. Adjust neck strip, towel and shampoo cape around patron’s neck. 4. Remove all the hair accessories from hair. 5. Examine patron’s hair and scalp condition. 6. Direct patron in a shampoo bowl and sit her comfortably. 7. Adjust volume and temperature of water. B. MANIPULATING STEPS 1. Wet hair thoroughly with warm water spray held off the head. Shift hand to protect patron’s face and ears from the spray. 2. Mix hot water with cold. Test the water mixture and temperature on the back of your hand. After lifting the spray and before applying it to the client, test the water temperature again. 3. Check the water flow and pressure. Do not allow the water to flow down the neck or on the face of the patron. 4. Keep one hand between the head and the water spray – you will 15

then be aware of any temperature changes. 5. Thoroughly wet the hair, avoid wetting the patron. 6. Apply shampoo, first into the palm of your hand. Distribute it evenly over the hair and scalp. Use as little shampoo as is necessary, or most of it will be wasted. 7. With clawed fingers massage the scalp in a circular manner. Cover the whole scalp – be sure to avoid missing any part. 8. Rinse the hair thoroughly, again checking the water temperature and pressure. 9. Finally rinse all traces of lather from the skin and hair. C. COMPLETION STEPS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Comb the hair starting with hair ends at nape of neck. Set the hair to the desired style. Remove shampoo cape, towel or neck strip. Dry hair and comb out hair to appropriate hair style. Discard used materials and place unused supplies in their proper place. 6. Clean and sanitize combs and brushes. 7. Place used towels into towel hampers. 8. Clean and sanitize shampoo bowl. 9. Wash and sanitize hands. SAFETY MEASURES FOR SHAMPOOING 1. Clean shampoo bowl and sanitize neck of the bowl before and after each use. 2. Do not permit shampoo to get into patron’s eyes. 3. Protect patron’s ears with bits of clean cotton if she is sensitive to water in the ears. 4. Test water temperature before applying to patron’s head. 5. Do not permit the fingernails to scratch the patron’s scalp. 6. Always towel off the excess moisture from patron’s hair before she leaves the shampoo bowl. 7. Do not turn the dryer to “HOT” if the patron is subject to high blood pressure. 8. Do not permit the water to remain on the floor or around the shampoo bowl 16

9. Do not permit the shampoo cape to come in contact with the patron’s skin. 10. Use sanitized combs, brushes, towels and other implements to each patron. LET US REMEMBER   

DRYING HAIR TO SHAPE AND TO CREATE A FINISHED LOOK Drying Hair Principles Drying hair is the process of styling wet hair while blow-drying it. Using a hand-held dryer, you use a variety of techniques to create different effects. While directing heated air on to the wet hair, you mould the hair with brushes, use a comb or your fingers, and positioning it to fit the style for which you have cut it. Like other methods of setting wet hair, blow styling works by changing 22

the hair structure. While hair is wet, and heat is applied, it can be moulded into a chosen shape. The style is only temporary, though. As the hair gradually absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, it returns to its original shape. Combing styled hair with hot water returns the hair to its natural form straight away. Heat Molding Techniques Heat can be applied to hair in other ways: 

To wave it using irons

To curl it using tongs To crimp it using heated crimpers To straighten it using hot combs or hot brushes

Like other methods, these techniques depend on the softening effect of heat. The molded hair must be allowed to cool before it will hold its shape. If you comb through it while it is still warm, you will lose or distort the shape. Hair molded in this way returns to its natural state if combed with hot water. Blow Styling Techniques The technique you choose will be determined by the hair texture, the quality and quantity of hair, the style to be produced and the cut. The most suitable hair for blow styling is firm, thick, and coarse hair. These are additional styling aids –  Thickeners  Setting mousses and gels These are designed to give directions to the hair. Fine and fluffy hair requires the help of one of these if you are to obtain successful results.

BLOW – WAVING is shaping the hair into waves, using directed heated air from hair/ dryer, and combs, brushes or your hands. It achieves natural soft fullness. BLOW – DRYING is simply drying the hair with the hand held dryer. It is used to blow dry hair into a chosen shape, or in a required direction. SCRUNCH DRYING is the gripping and squeezing clumps of hair while directing heated air into the hand. The process yields a casual, ruffled, molded shape. FINGER OR HAND DRYING is the lifting pulling and directing hair with the fingers or hands. Casual, soft and full shapes can be achieved. Billowing fullness is perhaps the chief effect. BLOW – COMBING is the drying and shaping using comb, or a comb attachment fixed to the hairdryer. It is a kind of blow drying and achieves shape and direction. BLOW – STRETCHING OR STRAIGHTENING a means of smoothing and unkinking or straightening the hair. A variety of brush shapes and sizes may be used. A blow – style consists of first shampooing the hair, then softening it with a dryer and finally molding it into shape using a blow-dryer. It may be dressed, if required, when the hair has cooled. Natural drying is leaving the hair to dry naturally, depending on whether the cut and the style are suitable. Natural drying maybe assisted by the heat of the sun and wind. EQUIPMENT / TOOLS / PRODUCTS HAND – HELD DRYER is the most important piece of equipment you need. The dryer should have adjustable speeds and temperatures and period of durability. It needs to be light and easy to hold and to have controls positioned for easy reach.

HAND DRYER ATTACHMENTS such as nozzles and diffusers are available. Using the dryer without a nozzle or diffuser allows for a wider directed air flow. COMBS should be professional and heat resistant. The comb you will use should have both widely spaced and narrowly spaced teeth. BRUSHES are probably the most important items after blow dryers. A firm, stiff, bristle or plastic brush is required. This will help you to grip, direct and control the hair.

DIFFUSER fits over the end of the hair dryer and distributes an even flow of warm air. It reduces a strong air to flow and is used for finishing styles. It is ideal for producing soft, casual, ruffled natural curl looks. It can be used on various hair lengths. NOZZLE is intended to concentrate the hot air flow on to a specific area. It is ideal for blow-waving as it allows the hair to be directed at the troughs and crests of the wave shapes. STYLING IRONS OR TONGS are often used to finalize a dried hair style. This is an electrically heated unit. The hair is rolled and held in place long enough for the heat to soften the hair. The irons are then slid out to leave a smooth rolled shape, similar to that produced by the rollers. HOT BRUSHES AND HEATED ROLLERS are available in several sizes. They are applied to dried hair in similar manner for styling tongs. STYLING AIDS / PRODUCTS USED IN BLOWDRYING Blow – styling, setting, styling and dressing can be usefully aided by using some of a large variety of products. Most hair cosmetic manufacturers feature them. Some are physically designed to give added support to the hair shapes so as to retain style as long as possible. There are aids available to meet most needs. Product knowledge will help you select the correct one for your client. The aids in the following list may contain:  Plasticizers to enfold and support the hair  Moisturizers to retain or resist moisture  Protective screeners  Silicone shiners 

Blow styling aids protect the hair from excessive heat, augment the length of time for which the hair shape is held and give body to the hair.

There are different hair aid strengths.  Firm hold  Extra hold  Medium hold  Ultra hold  Ultimate hold Dressing aids give sheen, shine, gloss and glitz to the hair. Gels, oils, silicones, mousses, foams and waxes used to reflect light and to enhance a healthy looking shape. Setting aids enhance hair elasticity, help the hair to keep its spring and bounce, and allow it to stretch easily. Protective aids shield the hair from the harsh effects of exposure to the sun. Curl enhances the hair to retain curl or wave formation longer and include perm enhancers. HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN BLOWDRYING 1. Use only professional tools. 2. Ensure that all electrical equipment are in good order. 3. Never use electrical equipment with wet hands – you might be electrocuted. 4. Never use faulty equipment. 5. Work comfortably. Avoid continually twisting or stretching your body. 6. Maintain high standards of hygiene. 7. Test the heat of the dryer before applying it to the hair. You may cause discomfort to your patron or damage to the hair. If the air is too hot for the skin or too hot for the hair. 8. Direct hot air away from the scalp. 9. Do not keep the dryer in one place too long. 10. When straightening, never overstretch the hair. 11. Do not attempt to shape hair when it is too wet. 12. Pulling the hair may cause breakage. 13. Use suitable blow-drying aids to protect hair from overheating. 27

14. Do not blow style hair that is in poor condition. 15. Do not blow dry if the hair is too dry or wet.

Letting hair dry naturally is usually not a practical option and doesn’t get the best looking result for your hair. The more you blow dry, the worse the condition of your hair will become. If you have time, keep the dryer o its coolest setting. Excessive heat is a major cause of hair dryness as it makes hair lose its natural oils.

This lesson deals with the assessment of the patron’s hair cutting needs, the appropriate reception to be extended, the analysis of the hair condition, texture, density and length, and the proper protective clothing materials to be used. Before you touch your client’s hair, she has to be received into the salon. Reception is the point at which she begins her business relationship with you. Ways of addressing the patron   

Greet the patron politely, pleasantly and courteously. Attend to him/her promptly and helpfully. Find time to acknowledge the arrival of another client and assure him/her that he/she will soon be attended to.

Every hairdressing business has to have patrons. The patron’s satisfaction is the salon’s main business. Realizing this is the key to your success. How to assess the patron’s hair cutting needs?     

Discuss with the patron what she wants and expects. Communicate with the patron by listening to what she tells you and understanding what she requires you to do. Examine your patron’s hair to determine its type, texture, color, length, condition and any other important factors that may affect the services requested. Tell your patron the limitations. Persuade her to cut the hair to a style you are sure would suit her. Show hair catalogues or magazines to help and guide the patron in deciding on the style she would choose.

After assessing your patron’s hair cutting needs, you may take the initiative in guiding the client to a decision. Make sure that the patron understands, accepts and agrees with you on the decided haircut style. Reminder:  Never attempt to carry out any haircutting service without the patron’s consent  All information regarding patrons should be handled in strict confidence.  Make sure all the patron’s clothes are covered and all materials are secured. In selecting the proper hairstyle, the hairdressers should take into consideration the condition of the patron’s hair

The quality and quantity of hair:     

Shiny, healthy hair is essential for good styling. Hair that is in poor condition and poorly textured never looks good and will not style well. Thin hair is difficult to manage and requires attention. Hair styles which make it appear thicker and fuller are usually best. Very curly hair requires frequent combing. As it is combed the true length becomes apparent. Straight hair, particularly if it is fine textured can be difficult to cut. Very fine, thin hair when wet loses its shape. Use setting aids, so hair thicken and practice styles.

Hair position, proportion and form      

The outline formed by hair in relation to facial shape contributes to the overall effect. Consider the direction and distributions of the hair – its cowlicks, widow’s peaks, hair streams, hair whorls and double crowns. Make allowances for these when cutting particularly when designing the style. It is important that you maintain balance between hair and face to achieve a suitable distribution and shape. The way the hair falls or moves is best seen when the hair is wet. Styling can disguise the form of the hair and its natural position. A hairstyle that follows the natural fall and growth retain its shape longer. Cutting nape whorl too short produces difficulties; the hair may stick out in all directions.

Fine hair Fine hair like silk is delicate and responds to products more quickly than other textures. It hangs flat and lies close to the head, looking thin despite the thickness. Try shorter and blunt cuts to add fullness. Layers can make thin hair look thinner; you may use gel to add volume at the roots. Coarse hair Coarse hair is like linen, each strand is strong and thick. It appears wiry in humid conditions and looks dull even after washing.

Hair Cutting Techniques The Blunt Cut 1. Sectioning the hair. Make a vertical center part from the crown of the head to the front hairline. Another part is made horizontally across the top of the head from the crown to the top of each ear.

2. Make your guidelines at the nape part of the hair horizontally about ½ inch above the nape, level with the bottom of the earlobes. Pin up the rest of the hair with clips.

3. Take a center portion of the nape hair between forefinger and middle finger of your left hand. Cut hair to the desired length. This will serve as your guidelines for the rest of the cut.

4. Take down the next section of hair. Make another horizontal part. Clip the rest of hair up. Cut the new section of the hair at the same level as the guideline.

5. As you continue to cut new horizontal parts are made in the back hair. Each section of hair is then combed down and cut to the level with the guideline.

6. Take the next section of hair at the side. Part on inch above the hairline and combed hair straight down. Cut straight down following the guideline. Do the other side.

7. Check your work. Comb the hair straight down all around the head. Trim any stray hairs by snipping them individually. Look in the mirror to make certain they are even.

When using a hair dryer, keep it on a medium or low setting. Hold it 6-8 inches away from the scalp As you dry the hair with a blow dryer, use a round brush to guide the hair in the way you want it to go. For a really full effect, tip the head forward and dry the underneath hair first, then straight up and dry the outer part. When using curling iron or hot rollers, make sure they’re heated before use. The hair will curl faster.

Styling Aids for Finishing Touches    

Gels are best used at the roots for lifts. Mousse foams into the hair and provide ample hold. Pomades keep curly hair from looking frizzy. Hair spray holds hairstyles longer.

Tips on Hair Care       

Keep your hair clean. Use a shampoo formulated for your hair type. Use crème rinse if necessary. Give your hair a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment once a month Brush your hair often. This distributes the oil evenly through the hair and adds shine. Never brush your hair when it is wet. Don’t over use the blow dryer. Have your hair trimmed one half inch every month. Regular trimming keeps split ends to a minimum length.

Dry and moist heat may both be used in sterilization.

Glass – bead sterilizer is a small electrically-heated unit which contains glass beads; these transfer heat to objects placed in contact with them. This method is suitable for small tools such as tweezers and scissors.

Autoclaving is the most effective method for sterilizing objects in the salon. Water is boiled in an auto clave (similar to a pressure cooker), the water reaches a temperature of 121 – 134 ◦c. If an object cannot be sterilized, it should be placed in a chemical disinfectant solution such as quaternary ammonium compounds or glutaraldehyde. An antiseptic prevents the multiplication of microorganisms. It is milder than a disinfectant and it does not kill all micro-organism.

Sterilization Techniques     

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on the use of sterilizing unit. Select the appropriate method of sterilization for the object. Clean the object in clean water and detergent to remove dirt and grease. Dirt left on the object may prevent effective sterilization. Dry it thoroughly with a clean, disposable paper towel. Place tools that have been sterilized in a clean covered container.

Disposal of waste Waste should be disposed in an enclosed waste bin, durable enough to resist tearing. The bin should be regularly sanitized with disinfectant in a wellventilated area. Contaminated waste should be disposed of as recommended by local authority. Used razor blades and similar items should be placed into a safe container. When the container is full, it can be discarded.

Washing surfaces All surfaces within the salon should be washed at least once each day. They can be cleansed with hot water and detergent. Don’t use abrasives as these will scratch plastic surfaces. Glass mirrors should be cleaned every morning before clients arrive. Glass surfaces should be cleaned and polished using either hot water or detergent or a spirit based lotion that evaporates quickly.

Assessing patron’s hair cutting needs     

Discuss with the client what he wants and expects Listen to what he tells you and understand what he requires you to do Examine your client’s hair to determine its type, texture, color, length the factors that may affect the services requested. Tell your patron the limitations. Convince him to cut hair to a style you are sure would suit him. Show hair catalogues to guide the patron’s decision.

After assessing your client’s haircutting needs, you may take the initiative in guiding your client to a decision. Be sure that he understands, accepts and agrees with you on the decided haircut style. Examination of Hair and Scalp 

Combs. Suitable for cutting are thin and pliable comb, with both fine and coarse teeth. Fine teeth allow the hair to be controlled and closely cut. Coarse teeth allow for repeated combing and positioning of the hair. Mirrors. These are useful while cutting the patron’s hair so that the shape can clearly be seen over the shoulder around the neck and remain firmly in position Cutting collars. Curl enhancers enable the hair to retain curl or wave formation longer

Tips on Hair Care for Patron      

Keep your hair clean. Use a shampoo formulated for your hair type. Use crème rinse if necessary. Give your hair a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment once a month. Brush your hair often. This distributes the oil evenly through the hair and adds shine. Don’t over use the blow dryer. Have your hair trimmed one half inch every month. Regular trimming keeps split ends to a minimum length.

Dealing with complaints If your patron does not like the style you have produced, the following may help:  

Honestly justify what you believe is correct and suitable. Do not allow the client to leave with poor shape and style.

LESSON 1 PREPARING THE PATRON

WHAT IS THIS LESSON ABOUT? The lesson deals on how to prepare the patron, the things that the operator must do in order to check and analyze the condition and type of hair and the scalp, and the recording of previous treatments and present desired service outcome. Throughout history, people have experimented with their hair in attempt to make themselves more beautiful. Advantages of Cold Perming 1. Relatively inexpensive. 2. Employs no heat and is given at room temperature. Cosmetologists and chemists have contributed many improvements to produce the cold perming methods in use today. For best results, the cosmetologist should follow the manufacturer’s directions. Today, cold perming is the accepted method of permanently perming nearly all types of hair. Exceptions are persons who maybe allergic to the perming lotion and those whose hairs do not take a cold perm satisfactorily.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS To give a successful cold perm, the cosmetologist must have a thorough understanding of the following:         

Hair and Scalp Analysis Curling rods and chemicals Hair sectioning patterns Hair blocking and wrapping Applying perming lotion Processing Test curls Neutralizing Safety measures

SCALP AND HAIR ANALYSIS A very important step before giving a cold perm is to make a careful and correct analysis of the patron’s scalp and hair condition. SCALP EXAMINATION The scalp should be examined very carefully. Abrasions on the scalp can make cold perming dangerous to a patron. An irritated scalp or badly damaged hair are both signs that cold perming should be postponed until the condition is corrected. HAIR POROSITY Porosity is the ability of the hair to absorb fluids or liquids. The porosity of the hair determines how quickly the perm lotion is absorbed. The processing time for any cold perm depends much more on hair porosity than upon any other factor. The more porous the hair, the less processing time it takes, and a milder perming solution is required. The hair absorbs the cold perming lotion in relation to its porosity, regardless of texture. HAIR TEXTURE Hair texture refers to the individual size of the hair strand and its degree of coarseness or fineness. The texture and porosity are judged together in determining the processing time. For hair of medium texture, use perm lotion of normal strength. Fine hair curls more easily and requires weaker lotion; coarse hair is harder to wave and requires stronger lotion.

HAIR ELASTICITY Hair elasticity is the ability of the hair to stretch and contract. Without elasticity, there will be no curl on the hair. The greater the degree of elasticity the longer the wave will remain in the hair, because less relaxation of the hair occurs. HAIR DENSITY scalp.

Hair density is the amount of hair strands per square inch on the

Smaller blockings and larger rods are often required for thickly growing hair. If the hair is thin, per square inch, smaller blocking sections and smaller rods are required in order to form a good wave pattern close to the head. Avoid large blockings on a thin hair growth. HAIR LENGTH Long heavy hair requires more perming than short hair because the hair’s weight will pull on the curls. Short, fine hair may become too tightly curled if given the normal processing time. RECONDITIONING TREATMENTS Reconditioning treatments for previously treated hair must be determined. Dry, brittle or damaged hair which was previously treated, should be given reconditioning treatment prior to cold hair perming. Recent developments in conditioners have proven to be beneficial to the hair. Avoid any treatment requiring massage or heat just prior to a cold wave. Such treatment would create a sensitive scalp. Permanent waving, tinted, bleached or damaged hair can be a problem. It is very important to analyze the hair properly. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES These precautionary measures should be observed if previous treatments are applied on the hair prior to cold wave: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Always use a pre-perm conditioner. Use a mild shampoo before perming. Use a mild cold wave lotion. Make a test as often as necessary. There is no room for error. Frequent checking is very important. All color treated hair will have a degree of discoloration after perm.

PREPARING AND PLANNING THE PERM For the patron, perming is a major step whose result she will have to live with for several months. She may not be familiar with the perm available. The operator should explain to the patron what perm is the most suitable to her.         

Explain that a cold perm is designed to curl straight hair. Consider the style with respect to the patron’s age and lifestyle. Examine scalp closely if: there are signs of inflammation, disease, cut skin; and there is excessive grease or lacquer. Shampoo the patron’s hair. Select the correct perm lotion. Always read manufacturer’s direction carefully. Fill up in details the patron’s record card. Take note of the decided style and cost involved to prevent misunderstanding. Minimize combing and brushing the hair.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING There are several ways in which the patron maybe draped for a cold perm. The comfort of the patron, adequate protection of person and her clothing are important during the entire procedure. One way to drape patron is to place a small folded towel around the patron’s neck, fasten the shampoo cape over it, then place another towel over the cape. Fasten the towel securely with safety pin or clip.

Wash hands with soap and water. Hairdresser should wear a smock gown. Drape the patron with clean towel around the shoulders, on top of it is a shoulder cape. Prepare materials in accordance with salon policies. Check and analyze the hair and scalp. Check patron’s perming history to determine possible chemical reaction. This lesson deals on how to prepare tools, supplies and equipment, according to salon policies and procedure, have a thorough understanding of the basic requirements for hair perming and performing basic perming observing safety and sanitary measures. Hair perming is a system of hair waving depending on waving or curling action on chemical alone. In perming, curls or waves of hair are close to the scalp. No heavy equipment is used. It is fast and easy. Tools, Supplies and Equipment Needed The materials used in perming the hair listed will render ease and professional way of performing the activity. 1.

Plastic Trolley – a handy tool used to hold the needed materials, tools use in perming hair

Scissors – used to trim the hair after the cold wave process CURLING RODS Proper selection of curling rods is essential for successful cold waving. Rods control the shape of the hair shaft during the cold wave process. They vary in diameter, length, composition and design. Diameter – the distance through the center of the rod. Circumference – the distance around the rod. The circumference determines the size of the wave or curl formation. Rod lengths are available in long, medium, short and very short sizes.

RODS ARE GENERALLY CLASSIFIED AS ILLUSTRATED BELOW

CHEMICALS USED IN HAIR PERMING THIOGLYCOLIC ACID, maybe present in a cold waving lotion. The presence of the latter in a cold wave lotion gives it an alkaline reaction. Other materials included maybe lanolin and its derivatives, wetting agents, solutions of proteins and hair conditioners of various types. WAVING LOTIONS vary in strength. They are available in both one bottle or two bottle applications. ONE-BOTTLE APPLICATION. The lotion begins the softening action as soon as it is applied. The action slows down as the lotion evaporates. The action is speeded up when the lotion is reapplied to saturate the hair. Good workmanship and a reasonable amount of speed is essential. CAUTION: Avoid interruption during a one-bottle application. AVOID INTERRUPTION DURING A ONE-BOTTLE APPLICATION TWO-BOTTLE APPLICATION. One bottle contains a lotion with special ingredients to protect, equalize the porosity and strengthen the hair shaft. It is applied prior to winding of the hair. A second bottle contains the waving lotion and is used to saturate the hair.

NEUTRALIZERS Neutralizer is a chemical used to stop the action of the waving lotion and rehardens the hair cells into their new form. After the hair has assumed the desired shape, it is chemically neutralized. Conditioners are often incorporated with the prepared neutralizer to impart luster and give some protection to the hair. SECTIONING AND BLOCKING OF THE HAIR Sectioning is dividing the hair into uniform areas. Uniform wave patterns depend on:    

Uniformly arranged sections Equally subdivided sections Clean and uniform partings Blockings which should be about ½ inch shorter than the rod length.

Blocking is a term usually used to designate the subdividing of the hair sections. This is done as each portion is wound around the rod. The size of the blockings is determined by the diameter of the rods the density and the texture of the hair. Thickly growing hair requires smaller blockings and larger rods to permit better arrangement for a wave pattern. Thin hair requires smaller blockings and smaller rods to prevent strain or breakage and to form a good wave pattern close to the head. The average blockings for a standard wave pattern should be slightly wider than the rod being used. Usually the blockings are smaller at the nape of the neck. CAUTION: If too much hair is wound around the rod or wound too tight, neither the waving lotion nor the neutralizer will penetrate, resulting in an uneven wave formation.

SECTIONING AND BLOCKING PATTERN

WINDING AND WRAPPING THE HAIR To form a uniform wave, with strong ridge, hair must be wrapped smoothly and neatly on each rod without stretching. Hair is not stretched due to the fact that the penetration of waving lotion causes the hair to expand. Tight wrapping or stretching interferes with this expansion and prevents the penetration of the lotion or may cause hair breakage. Correctly centered rods prevent possible scalp irritation and permit a wrap closer to the scalp.

CAUTION: When wrapping hair, always prevent bulkiness on the rod. Bulkiness prevents the formation of a good curl because the hair cannot conform to the shape of the rods

Hair end protection. Porous end papers are used to insure smooth wrapping and to prevent distorting the circle formation. TEST CURLS Test curls help to determine in advance how the patron’s hair will react to the cold waving process. A pre-permanent test curl gives the cosmetologist information on how best to protect the patron’s hair and how to obtain the best possible results. Regular testing enables the cosmetologist to observe the reaction of the hair as to:    

Speed of the wave formation Overall picture of wave formation Exact time when peak of wave formation has been reached Resistant areas.

TEST CURL WAVE DEVELOPMENT METHOD After the hair has been shampooed, wrap two or three curls on the upper back of the head. Each curl is given a complete treatment being timed and examined according to manufacturer’s directions. Use a different type of waving lotion on each test curl to determine best results. After neutralizing and rinsing the curls, judge and record the results.

Test curl wave development method is the part of the processing phase of a cold wave. Each head of hair is different. Conditions vary, even on the same head of hair. A patron’s hair will not always process the same length of time with its permanent wave. Neither will one type of wave always process in the same length of time on every head. Wave Development should be tested: 1. 2. 3.

immediately after the last rod is secured; following the re-wet application; and every 30 seconds thereafter until wave formation occurred.

Thoroughly blot the waving solution from the curl to be tested. Loosen the rod fastener. Unwind rod 1 ½ turns. Do not let the hair become loose or unravel on the rod. Hold it firmly with thumbs touching the rod. Unwind without pulling on the strands. Since the hair is in softened condition, pulling or stretching the strand will spoil the test. Push the rod slightly toward the scalp, with the thumbs holding the hair firm. Permit the hair to relax into a wave pattern without pushing or pulling at it. rewind the test curl

Continue testing for wave development at regular intervals. Test on different areas of the head each time. Do not use the same curl for retesting.

APPLICATION OF WAVING LOTION If the hair is being wound with waving lotion, apply the lotion ½ inch from the scalp. Extend it to about one inch from the hair ends. Comb the lotion through the strand. Comb from underneath with an upward motion, thereby distributing the lotion evenly throughout the hair strand. Use about one fourth of the lotion n winding the entire head. This assures that the hair is moistened with the lotion, not thoroughly saturated. Moistening the hair with the lotion, only for the wrapping procedure, the action slows down. Then the hair on the rods must be rewet or saturated to start the process again, this is the rewet procedure. The additional lotion assures complete penetration into the hair shaft. REMEMBER 

Always follow the manufacturers directions for winding and applying the waving lotion.



The cosmetologist should wear protective gloves to cover hands to protect the skin from chemical injury.

CAUTION:    

DO NOT LEAVE THE PATRON ALONE WHILE PROCESSING THE HAIR. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE REWET STEP. DO NOT PERMIT THE NOZZLE OF THE APPLICATOR BOTTLE TO DRAG ACROSS THE ROD WHILE SATURATING. IF THE LOTION GETS INTO THE PATRON’S EYES, RINSE IMMEDIATELY WITH WATER. 19

APPLICATOR BOTTLE A plastic bottle with nozzle top makes the most efficient applicator. It dispenses liquid freely yet with good control. Bottles should be absolutely clean before filling with perming lotion. Leftover traces of neutralizer will weaken the action of the waving lotion. PROCESSING TIME Processing time is the length of time required for the hair strands to absorb the waving lotion and complete the total rearrangement of the hair cells around the rod. Processing time varies due to:        

lotion; hair texture; hair porosity; hair length; hair condition; atmospheric conditions; patron’s body heat; and working speed of the cosmetologist.

WAVE PATTERN FORMATION As the hair is processing, the wave has reached its peak when it forms a firm letter “S.” The size of the rod used determines the size of the “S” pattern. The “S” pattern reaches a peak only once. It does not re-form again. Beyond this point the hair is over-processed and damaged.

The waving lotion produces the curl formation by rearranging the cells of the hair shaft into a new alignment. The rods hold the hair in this formation until it is “hardened” or “fixed” by neutralization. METHODS OF NEUTRALIZATION There are three methods of application of neutralizers in general use: 1. Applicator method. The neutralizer comes prepared and has a thicker consistency than other types. It is applied with an applicator bottle and can be done away from the shampoo bowl. Some manufacturers refer to this type of application as an instant method. 2. Self-lathering method. Due to its shampoo content, this type of neutralizer cleanses away the waving lotion. It is also applied with an applicator bottle. This is another of the so-called instant methods. 3. Splash or pour-over method. This is a diluted solution, using neutralizer mixed with water as per manufacturer’s directions. It must be applied at the shampoo bowl. Thorough application is absolutely necessary for good results. It is sometimes referred to as the conventional method. REMINDER: Correct processing time can spell difference between success and failure in cold waving

BASIC HAIR PERMING PROCEDURE I. INTRODUCTION Cold hair perming is the way of changing through chemical process a straight hair into curls or waves. There are several methods of giving a cold perm. The suggested outline in this section is one of the several ways that maybe used. II. Examine scalp for abrasions and lesions. Analyze hair before every permanent wave. Obtain information concerning patron’s cold wave history. Protect clothing of patron by proper draping. Have the patron remove her glasses, neck and ear jewelry. Select a mild shampoo and apply it without irritating the scalp. Eliminate hair brushing or massaging before a permanent wave. Use protective cream around patron’s hairline. Protect patron’s face and neck with cotton strips or neutralizing band during processing. Cover cosmetologist’s hands with gloves or protective cream. Use clean applicator bottles for solutions. Avoid dripping of lotion on scalp and skin. Immediately remove cotton strips or neutralizing band from face and neck, if saturated with waving lotion. If neck towel gets saturated with lotion, remove immediately. For the removal of lotion drippings, blot with cotton saturated with cold water. Apply neutralizer, if necessary. If solution enters patron’s eyes, wash immediately with cold water; or be guided by your instructor. Do not leave the patron alone while the hair is processing. 23

Be sure to neutralize the hair thoroughly. Always follow manufacturer’s directions. Do not use cotton to apply waving lotion. Do not stretch the hair when wrapping. Always follow manufacturer’s instruction. If too much hair is would around the rods or wound too tight, neither the waving lotion nor the neutralizer will penetrate, resulting in an uneven wave formation. When wrapping hair always prevent bulkiness on the rod. Have patience to your patron and briefly explain some details of the variable factors governing cold wave.

AFTER AND FINAL CARE OF A PERMED HAIR The after–care of the patron’s cold wave helps to keep the hair in the best possible condition. Reconditioning treatments for patrons also have a place in the after–care of a cold wave and between cold waves. It includes regular hair care, as follows 1. Shampoo hair weekly with proper shampoo and rinse. 2. Use proper hair conditioner as directed by the manufacturer. 3. Comb and brush the hair daily. Use type of brush best suited to the hair. 4. Avoid excessive brushing or combing in the wrong direction. 5. Have the patron’s hair trimmed and styled at regular intervals in order to make the hairstyle more serviceable. CARING FOR PERMED HAIR After having a perm your hair will be much drier. You will need to condition your hair after every shampoo, and use conditioning oil treatment once a week. Avoid over brushing or blow drying for at least once a week after the perm, as the heat may cause the hair to snap and split. Avoid heated tongs and rollers for the same reason. For maximum cure, leave your hair to dry naturally after washing and conditioning. AFTER THE PERM 

Check the results of perming.  Has the scalp been irritated by the perm lotion?  Is the hair in good condition?  Is the curl even?



Dry the hair into style.  Depending on the effect you want, you may now use finger drying, hood drying or blow drying.  Treat the hair gently. If you handle it too firmly the perm may relax again.



Advise the patron on how to manage the perm at home.  The hair should not be shampooed for a day or two.  The manufacturer of the perm lotion may have supplied information to be passed to the patron.  Discuss general hair care with your patron. 29



Clean all tools thoroughly so that they are ready for the next patron.



Complete the patron’s record card. Note details of the type of person, the strength of the waving lotion, the processing time, the curler sizes, and the winding technique. Record any problems you have had. This information will be useful if the hair is permed again.

WAVING TOOLS AND PRODUCTS STORED ACCORDING TO SALON POLICIES Waving tools such as combs, brushes, curlers, and so forth are made from plastics. These materials are relatively easy to keep hygienically safe, if they are used and cleaned properly in getting ready for the next patron. Combs should be washed frequently. When not in use they should be immersed into an antibacterial solution. When needed they can be rinsed and dried and are then ready for use. Discard empty bottles and containers in a covered trash bin. Wave products which were unused should be thrown and discarded in the washing vessel if its liquid. Don’t bring them back in the original container. Arrange them in the cabinet in the order of use. Read labels carefully. LET US REMEMBER After having a perm proper hair care must be undertaken:  You need to condition the hair after every shampoo.  Use a conditioning oil treatment once a week.  Avoid over brushing and combing the newly permed hair.  Avoid blow drying for at least a week after the perm as the heat may cause hair to split.  Leave your hair to dry naturally after washing and conditioning.

The lesson covers the knowledge, skills and attitude in attending to the patron’s personal needs, the use of protective clothing materials, and the preparation prior to hair coloring service. LET US STUDY Definition of Terms Aniline - a product of coal tar used in the manufacturing of artificial dyes Compound – a substance which consist of two or more chemical elements in union Strand test – a preliminary test given before a tint or lightening application to determine the required development time How to assess the patron’s personal needs:    

Discuss with the patron his/her preferences, what is his/her expectation after hair coloring service. Make the patron aware of his/her limitations then give suggestions on what color or product would best suit his/her. Examine the patron’s type of hair and skin color. Help client decide on his/her choice by showing his/ her catalogues, magazines, and guides on hair coloring fashion.

Ways of receiving a client/patron Be sure that each client/patron is accorded the due respect courtesies and pleasant greetings to make his/her feel the warm welcome from the salon. PATCH TEST Procedure: 1. Select test area. 2. Wash test area with mild soap and water. 3. Dry test area with absorbent cotton or a clean towel. 4. Prepare the test solution. 5. Apply test solution to the test area. 6. Leave it uncovered for 24 hours. 7. Examine the test area for either a negative or positive reactions.

A negative skin test show no sign of inflammation. A positive skin test is recognized by redness, swelling, burning, itching, blisters or eruptions.

BASIC RULES FOR COLOR SECTION 1. For color observation, the client’s/patron’s hair should be clean and dry. 2. Use a color chart to show the product’s range of colors, their names and numbers. 3. Compare the patron’s hair with the shade that is closest to the chart. STRAND TEST PROCEDURE 1. Mix equal parts of color selected to oxidizing solution. 2. Apply mixture to the full length of a dry hair strand. Retain it on the hair until the desired shade is developed and/or achieved. 3. Wash, dry and examine the hair strand. Proceed with the coloring if the results are satisfactory. EXAMINING SCALP AND HAIR Examine patron’s hair and scalp to determine if it is safe to use an aniline derivative tint. An aniline derivative tint should not be used if the following condition is recognized:  Signs of positive skin test.  Contagious scalp or hair disorders.  Scalp irritation or eruption.  Presence of metallic or compound dyes.

WHAT IS THE LESSON ABOUT? The lesson deals with the correct application of a coloring product on hair. It includes hair coloring techniques and identifying its corresponding faults and correction. This is done according to the manufacturer’s instruction while ensuring client safety and comfort during the process. WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? Temporary colorants are the mildest form of hair coloring. Semi-permanent color penetrates the cuticle of the hair but do not alter the natural pigmentation structure and simply coats the cortex with color. Permanent tints change the structure of the hair and alter its natural hair color.

Make sure that clothes both yours and your patron’s are always fully protected by gowns and towels. Remove colorants effectively, by thorough rinsing on completion of the coloring process. Make notes of any problems you encounter. Complete record cards by noting all details clearly and accurately including the final results achieved. Remove tints by adding a little water, lightly massaging the hair, and rinsing. Others may require shampooing. If there are any skin stains, apply a little tint directly to the stain to soften it and rinse.

Cleansing tools    

Clean tools after use. Never use tools on another patron without cleaning and sterilizing them first. Remove loose material from combs and brushes, wash and disinfect them, then dry them. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before using liquid disinfectants.

Looking after clients before and during services    

Check that all protective coverings are accurately placed Collect together all tools, equipment and products to be washed. Reassure the patron that her belongings are safe. Explain the process that is taking place as you go along.

It is an important part of all that you do for the patron in the salon. It involves concern for your patron, and genuinely wanting to meet all his/her needs satisfactorily. Patron’s care means looking after his/her safety and making sure that he/she is comfortable, satisfied with the service and safely attended. This begins when the client/patron enters the salon and continues until he/she leaves. For patron’s care to be fully attended to, an initial consultation is essential. This applies to both new and regular patrons. 3

Consultation A consultation is a meeting at which advice is given and taken, consists of talking to the patron, listening to her so that you can consider her needs and jointly negotiating a suitable course of action. You will be expected to exchange views with her, and to discuss with her just what is to be done with her hair. TIPS   

Good client care starts with careful consultation. Record all client information. Ensure that it is easy to retrieve.

Patrons expect the salon to be clean. They expect that good hygiene is maintained. There are various kinds of hair and scalp treatment, the two most common kinds are: Hair Spa – a component of hair and scalp treatment that contains curative mineral /spring water that relaxes hair, making it relieved from any form of hair tension Hair Reborn – a hair treatment given to maintain its healthy condition that brings hair back to its normal desired condition Hot Oil Treatment – a hair treatment is given to patron who suffers dry and brittle hair to prevent the occurrence of split ends Ask the patron which hair and scalp treatment he/she prefers, as this may need different kinds of materials and treatment products to be used. Ways to Keep the salon Hygienically Clean      

Use only clean towels and gowns for each patron. Wash combs and brushes before sterilizing or disinfecting them. Use 70% alcohol for cleaning tools. Keep floors and surfaces clear, tidy and clean. Maintain good personal and general hygiene. Wash your hands regularly.

PREPARING THE PATRONS Once patron has arrived for an appointment and you have taken care of his/her belongings, find out what services have been requested and prepare patron accordingly.     

Check if the chair/seat is clean. Place tissue or towel over the patron’s collar and shoulders. Place a suitably sized gown, and secure it. Make sure all the patron’s clothes are covered. All materials are secured so that they remain in place.

Preparing Hair and Scalp Hair needs to be free from tangles.     

Loose the hair apart with your fingers. Using a wide-toothed comb, start combing the hair, upward to the scalp. Remove tangles without pulling, scratching or breaking the comb. Brush and comb hair smoothly without jerking the patron’s head. Check on the scalp for abrasions or blemishes.

PREPARING TOOLS / EQUIPMENT Choose a comb that is unbroken, flexible, well balanced, nonflammable, resistant to chemicals, and easy to clean. It should have widely spaced teeth, and have no mould marks or sharp edges. Use only good quality tools to avoid damaging the hair and apply them gently and correctly. A good brush will penetrate and grip the hair and allow you to place the hair where you want it. LET US REMEMBER      

Patron’s care is essential to your success as a hairdresser. Patron’s care is looking after his/her and making sure that she is comfortable, satisfied with the service and safely attended. An initial consultation is essential for an effective patron’s care. Patrons expect that salon is hygienically maintained. Hair and scalp must be analyzed before giving a treatment. Equipment and tools should be selected and prepared accordingly.

LET US STUDY DEFINITION OF TERMS Hair Spa – a component of hair and scalp treatment that contains curative mineral/ spring water that relaxes hair, making it relieved from any form of hair tension Hot Oil Treatment – a hair treatment is given to client/patron that suffers dry and brittle hair to prevent the occurrence of split ends Bounce – springiness Frothy– foamy Damp – moist Tangle – knotted hair A. PERFORMING HAIR SPA The hair is a valuable natural fiber and to get it looking its best you should treat it with as much care as you could. Hair is very resilient. With care and attention you should be able to restore its bounce and glossy sheen. Your hair type is inherited, but learning to make the most of what you have can make a difference to the look, feel and texture of your crowning glory. Hair spa Using Commercially Prepared Product A. 1. Drape patron accordingly. 2. Check and analyze the hair and scalp. 3. Comb and section the hair into four parts. 4. Begin detangling one section at a time; working from bottom of section to top. B. 1. Apply the product as directed by the manufacturer. 2. Use the applicator brush.  It is used in applying the product to make the application appear graceful. It also helps to spread the product evenly on the hair strands.

3. Apply the commercially prepared product based on the type of hair of the patron. 4. Continue applying the product on each hair strand of section until all section and the entire head are covered. 5. Treat hair with thermal cap/streamer.  The use of the heat into the hair is designed to soften the cosmetic product allowing it for proper penetration. 6. Shampoo and rinse the hair according to the type of hair being treated. 7. Towel-dry this/comb the hair free of tangles. 8. Blow dry/style the hair. Basic Technique in Scalp Manipulations With each movement described below, the hands are placed under the hair. Thus, the length of the fingers, the balls of the fingers and the cushions of the palms stimulate the muscles, nerves and blood vessels of the scalp area.

1. Relaxing Movement. Cupping chin in your left hand, place right hand at base of skull and rotate gently. Reverse positions of the hands and repeat

2. Sliding Movement. Place fingertips on each side of head, slide firmly upward, spreading the fingertips until they meet at the top of the head. Repeat four times

3. Sliding and Rotating Movement. Same as movement no. 2, except that after sliding the finger-tips one inch rotate and move the scalp. Repeat four times.

4. Forehead Movement. Hold back head with left hand. Place stretched thumb and fingers of right hand, move hand slowly and firmly upward to one inch past hairline. Repeat four times.

5. Moving the Scalp. Place palms of hands firmly against scalp. Lift scalp in a rotary movement; first, with hands placed above ears; second, with hands placed at front and back of head.

6. Hairline Movement. Place fingers of both hands at forehead, massage around hairline by lifting and rotating.

7. Front Scalp Movement. Dropping back one inch, repeat foregoing movement over entire front scalp.

8. Back Scalp Movement. Place fingers of each hand on sides of head, starting below ears, manipulate with thumbs upward to crown, repeat four times. Repeat thumb manipulations, working towards, center back of head.

9. Ear-To-Ear Movement. Place left hand on forehead; massage from right ear to left ear along base of skull with heel of hand, using rotary movement.

10. Back Movement. Place left hand on forehead and stand at left of patron. Rotate with right hand from base of neck, along shoulder, and back across shoulder blade to spine. Slide up spine to base of neck; repeat on opposite side.

11. Shoulder Movement. Place both palms together at base of neck with rotary movement, catch muscles in the palms and massage along shoulder blades to point of shoulder and back again. Then massage from shoulders to spine and back again.

12. Spine Movement. Massage with rotary movement from base of skull down the spine. Using a firm finger pressure, bring hand slowly to base of skull.

Super Avocado Hair Treatment (locally prepared) Imagine a spa right in your own home. Many of the ingredients here can be found right in your kitchen. Simple ingredients which you may find are surprisingly beneficial in a lot of ways. Think relaxing, natural recipes to take the stress of your hair. Take some time off during busy day and indulge yourself to any of these treats. These are basic recipes so feel free to add a few personal touches like favorite essential oil. Ingredients:  1 egg  ½ of an avocado fruit (ripe)  2 tablespoons of oil (olive, coconut, sunflower or baby oil) Put all together in a blender and process until frothy. Add avocado and oil and blend until smooth. Apply as you would a conditioner, to clean, damp hair and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly or shampoo off. The egg (rich in many vitamins) and the oil provide further moistening properties.

Why It Works? Avocados contain natural oils that are easily absorbed by the skin and hair. It is a good source of vitamins A, B and E, amino acids and sterols and mineral salts such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. Prepare needed tools materials and supplies. Drape patron accordingly. Comb hair free of tangles. Brush hair. Section the hair into four parts Using the application brush, apply the pureed mixture into the hair strand by section. 7. Continue applying until the section and the entire head is finished. 8. Cover the head with wax or plastic covering. 9. Leave the hair and the mixture for 30 minutes. 10. Shampoo and rinse the hair thoroughly. 11. Towel dry and blow dry to a style. NOTE: This local product can be used once a week. Other varieties can work like mayonnaise/puree coconut extract/yogurt honey etc. B. HAIR REBORN Introduction Hair reborn is a treatment given to the hair in order to maintain hair’s healthy condition, shine and glossiness. Hair reborn treatment is advisable for damaged hair brought about by frequent hair perming, coloring, highlighting, and other chemical treatments applied to the client’s/patron’s hair. Tools, Materials, Supplies and Equipment Needed: Materials: shoulder cape earpads hair clip 2 big towels laboratory gown/apron

Supplies: shampoo tissue aluminum foil

Equipments: hair iron(ceramic) hair blower trolley

Tools: comb with foil brush

Procedure: 1. Ask about the previous hair and scalp treatment of the patron. 2. Drape the patron accordingly. 3. Prepare the patron for shampooing, don’t apply conditioner as it may cause the hair cuticle to open. 4. Prepare the treatment product according to the volume and texture of the hair. Read and follow the manufacturer’s directions. 5. Section the hair accordingly. 6. Appropriate hair, layer by layer. 7. The hair treatment product contains a creamy substance which includes beads – like substance, the purpose of which is to scan the damaged hair. 8. Leave the treatment product in the hair for 15-30 minutes depending on the level of damage of the hair. 9. Prepare the hair iron and wrap the blades of the hair iron with an aluminum foil. 10. Ensure the heat to work out freely for the said timeline. 11. Apply ironing technique for hair reborn. 12. Get a strand of hair with the comb with tail in a paper thin manner and iron it by damping/pressing the iron along the strands of hair until you reach the tip of the hair. 13. Observe the hair if it becomes stiff. 14. After ironing, let the hair cool off for 10 minutes in order to release the accumulated heat. 15. Rinse the hair with running water. 16. Towel dry hair and use blow dryer until it is 85% dry. 17. Remove the aluminum foil from the hair iron. 18. Set the hair iron up to 130° C. 19. Iron hair for final touch. 20. Comb and style the hair. 21. Dispose used supplies and materials properly. 22. Clean and maintain the working area. 23. Store unused materials, supplies and products in accordance with salon policies. C. HOT OIL TREATMENT Introduction Hot oil treatment is a scalp treatment given to clients/patrons with dry scalp, dry brittle hair, split ends, dyed hair, bleached hair and excessive dandruff. It is administered to recondition the hair and scalp.

Tools COMB –used to separate the hair and remove tangles HAIRBRUSH – used to loosen the dandruff and remove dirt Materials CAPE – used to protect the patron’s clothing PLASTIC CAP – used to cover the head after applying hot oil in order to produce heat during scalp treatment TOWEL – used for drying the hair COTTON PLEDGETS/SWABS – is used to apply heated oil onto the hair and scalp A BIGGER BOWL – used to contain hot water to heat the coconut oil (if using coconut oil for treatment) HAIR CLIPS – used to hold the sectioned hair SHAMPOO – used to cleanse the scalp after the hair treatment Cosmetics OIL – a greasy liquid used as lubricant Equipment HEATING CAP/THERMAL STEAMER – an electrical device worn by the patron on his/her head to provide heat for proper distribution of oil during the scalp treatment Procedure A. Preparation: 1. Select and arrange the required tools, materials, and cosmetics needed. 2. The operator washes and sanitizes the hands. 3. Prepare and drape the patron accordingly for a shampoo. 4. Examine the scalp and hair condition. 5. Shampoo and towel dry the hair. 6. Blow dry the hair in an 80% dry condition. 7. Comb the hair. B. Manipulation steps: 1. Section hair into 4 equal parts a) Part the hair at the center from the facial hairline to the crown for at least 2 inches. b) Comb the hair downward to the back of the right ear. c) Do the same step to the back of the left ear.

d) Hold the hair with hair clamps. e) Part the back area into two and secure the hair with hair clamps. Apply the heated oil (commercially prepared/ locally prepared), section by section, from the scalp to the hair ends. Give scalp manipulation. Place the treated head of hair under a heating cap/thermal cap for 10-20 minutes, depending on the type of and scalp condition. Shampoo the hair. Rinse hair thoroughly Towel dry the hair. Press the hair.

C. Finishing touches/Completion steps: 1. Discard used materials and supplies. 2. Cleanse and sanitize used tools and equipment. 3. Store unused hair treatment chemicals and sanitized tools and equipment in accordance with salon policies. 4. Workplace should be put in order. 5. Wash and sanitize hands. LET US REMEMBER    

POST AND AFTER CARE OF HAIR TREATMENT ACTIVITY Now that the hair spa services have been completed, the work area must be cleaned and ready for the next service.     

Thoroughly rinse material off hair with warm water. Blot hair dry. Detangle hair and evaluate results. Prepare patron for the next service. Clean up work area: a). Wipe up spill. b). advising patrons on how to manage new styles; passing product knowledge onto the patrons, together with manufacturer’s recommendation for after care; the possible effects that salon services might have on the patron and his/her hair in the future; encouraging client/patrons to ask about salon services which they are unsure; guide patrons to adopt safe practices; promoting the patron to use the products and practices that will benefit her and keep his/her hair in good condition; and recording carefully all the services the client/patron receives in the salon, so that they can be readily identified if she ask for a repeat treatment.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY HAIR CONDITION Keeping hair in good condition requires the regular use of conditioners or maintaining product in consonance with the hair treatment received by the patron. This maintenance will reduce the effects of harsh chemicals and physical treatments. Many poor hair states are caused by ignoring the basic principles of good hair-dressing, grooming, cleaning, rinsing the hair correctly, carrying out processes as recommended, and handling the hair gently. This will all help to ensure good hair condition. Conditioner will keep healthy hair looking good and help in styling.
