6. The Multiplier Effect A change in any component of aggregate expenditure (ie. C, I, G or X) will work through the multiplier to change the national income more than proportionately. As shown in the diagram below [refer to diagram above], an increase in AE will cause the AE curve to shift from AE0 to AE1. At the original level of national income Y0, since AE is now greater than actual national output, there is an unplanned fall in stocks of AB. In the next period, firms would increase output, causing the level of national income to rise eventually to Y1, where the new AE equates the national output.
