e are pleased to offer an example of one of the great cultural treasures of Sweden and a truly historically important pu ble printed in 1541. The only complete Bible printed in Sweden in the entire 16th century and the first to contain the anslation of Luther's German Bible was pivotal in the establishment of the modern Swedish language. The translation rection of the Swedish Reform clergymen Laurentius Andreae (Lars Andersson, 1470-1552), Olaus Petri (1493-1552) a etri (1499-1573) with the blessing of King Gustav I or Gustav Vasa (1496-1560). The Bible's publication helped to c ith Rome and the central role of Lutheranism in Sweden which in turn strengthened his hold on power in a turbulent er mbitious typographical undertaking ever attempted in Sweden, the trio of clergymen enlisted the aid of the German pri 573). As noted in his exhaustive work Swedish Books 1280-1967 the scholar Sten G. Lindberg notes that the Lübeck b ppsala where he: brought new type material, the Teuerdanck Fraktur for headlines and a Wittenberg Schwabacher for the text, and more fferent sizes, thus introducing the typographical resources of the German High renaissnace into Sweden. The binding (wood boards and leather) is in derelict condition, completely detached from contents with the spine tor n side margin which has resulted in some text loss of marginal summaries and minor but of course noticeable truncatio scattered inobtrusive very old manuscript notations throughout, some neat underlining and there is extensive pencil nu ere is some dampstaining and soiling throughout, variable and mainly to top margin, not severe and in some sections n is torn and truncated in several places and also loose and detached from contents. Woodcut on verso of title page cut Both woodcuts on this leaf are soiled. Following title page is a ten page foreword with Table of Contents for the Old T manuscript notations. This is followed by the Book of Genesis, the first page of which is torn and truncated as can be ev s hereafter securely bound. Scattered short tears to margins are present throughout. Pages 6/7 and 11/12 bound op he end of the Book of Genesis exhibit more pronounced textual truncation on side margin and have been reinforced wi

s 46-50 torn with truncations as can be evaluated in photos of full page woodcuts thereof. Book of Kings page 74 has m mispaginated but correctly bound in sequence. There is a sectional division in the Book of Psalms but both groups of b a similar division is present in Song of Solomon also sewn together. Page 3/4 in the Book of Isaiah severely torn and Page 104 in Book of Daniel (woodcut map) is loose; significant text loss to following page as well. In Apocrypha there . 1/2 10-12, 27, 32-35, 59, 82-88 and page 89 is lacking the upper third of text but it has been painstakingly replaced uncation to upper title page also affecting woodcut on verso as can be evaluated in photos. Page 2/3 upper section mi damage, internal tears, holes etc. with partial text loss to pp. 5-8, 11-20, 23-24, 34-40, 55-57, 131-142. The final twe ition, tattered with multiple tears and significant text loss and some loss to woodcuts as can be seen in photos. The fi s manuscript page which is also rather torn and tattered as seen in photo below. Several margins in this distressed se t loss as seen in photos. While our emphasis has been on the presentation of the woodcuts, following the Swedish col of representative photos of the pages to get a sense of condition ranging from good, average to distressed. Again, bi nd attendant text as well as the images presented thus far.
