THIS MONTH’S COVER article on The Electric Pioneers - Four Players That Changed Everything, is a fascinating look at a moment when things were moving rapidly in guitar circles. When proper electric guitars became fully available in the mid-1930s with Gibson’s wonderful ES-150, as used by Charlie Christian, one of our ‘fab four’, it allowed guitarists to come to the fore in a way that was previously impossible. Christian exploited this to fabulous effect with Benny Goodman’s orchestra, and his track Solo Flight is one of the first notable electric guitar solos - although Eddie Durham had beaten him to the punch, it was Christian after whom the instrument’s fabled hexagonal pickup was named. Legend has it that Christian and T-Bone Walker started lessons on the same day, with the same teacher. Charlie went the jazz route and T-Bone pretty much defined electric blues as we know it. It’s his licks and their familiar fingerings that most players came to adopt, and which pervade guitar music to this day. If you’re wondering who’s the most neglected guitar great of all time, it could well be Lonnie Johnson. Credited with recording some of the first guitar solos ever, he also teamed up with jazz legend Eddie Lang to create many memorable tracks. More copied than any other early player, he could count Django Reinhardt, T-Bone and BB King among those who ‘borrowed’. So much has been written about Les Paul that it’s pointless trying to add anything. Suffice it to say that his influence (itself coming from Lonnie Johnson via Django Reinhardt) carries right down the line to rockabilly legends Cliff Gallup and Eddie Cochran, and on to Brian Setzer and modern legend Jeff Beck. While our four Electric Pioneers came along as early as the 1930s and ‘40s, don’t underestimate their technique or harmonic understanding - these guys (and others) are the font of wisdom from which almost every living player still drinks. They came seemingly from nowhere, and wrote the book! I hope you enjoy Jon Bishop’s intriguing feature and that it enlightens and enlivens your own playing, even three-quarters of a century on! Many thanks to Vintage & Rare Guitars in Bath for the loan of the wonderful 1956 Gibson ES-125 cover guitar (baby brother of that original ES-150), and to GT’s own Cliff Douse for modelling it for the photo shoot. Have fun - see you next month...
