Description

Engineering Data: GUIBERSON GW Packer Cups Includes GW-SS and GWD-HD

GW Cup-Type Packers and Cups Tubing and Casing Cup-Type Packers Cameron’s GUIBERSON® GW packer is available in a full range of tubing and casing sizes, in two-cup or four-cup models and with either standard or special-purpose cups. In its simplest form, the two-cup GW has a one-piece seamless steel mandrel with box-up and pin-down connections. It has no slips; no latch or locking mechanism to be fouled by sand, shale or mud; it does not require tubing weight to be set; and it packs off equally well at any point in the hole. The GW packer is offered in two types, GW-SS and GW-SP. Simplicity of design, rugged construction and unusually low cost make the GW attractive to the operator for a wide variety of applications.

GW-SS Packer The GW-SS packer has a seamless steel mandrel with an extra-large opening. GW-SS, GW-HD and GW-ST cups fit this packer. It is suitable for all applications involving normal pressures. GW-HD cups contain two rows of interlocking steel springs for extra reinforcement during rugged service. Thermal GW-ST cups have the same reinforcement for extrusion protection for its special elastomer. GW-ST cups are recommended for use in steam injection applications at maximum injection pressures of 1200 psi and for temperatures to 550° F (288° C).

GW-SP Packer The GW-SP packer has a full-opening, thick-wall seamless steel mandrel, making it ideal for rugged, high-pressure applications. GW-SP cups fit this packer.

Heavy-Duty GWD-HD The GWD-HD is a heavy-duty packer cup that incorporates two rows of interlocking steel springs as molded-in reinforcement. This unique design makes the cup especially effective in high-pressure, rugged applications such as testing and fracturing. This cup fits the Standard GW packer.

CP Cup The Type CP casing packer cup is a one-piece unit designed for use between casing strings. The CP cup is used as a liner and a means of sealing inner string, and for protecting low-pressure productive sands during cementing, acidizing and similar operations. Call for sizes and pricing.

Maximum(9) Temperature Limit

HNBR

OK - Recommended for this service

NR - Not recommended

? - Questionable or depends on more factors

NOTES: (1)

Viton and Fluorel are very similar, except in a few applications.

(2)

Standard Service – crude oil, natural gas, brine, most drilling muds, etc.

(3)

HBNR can be used in H2S up to a concentration of 10% (sulfur cured) or 15% (peroxide cured).

(4)

Explosive Decompression can be controlled using a proper bleed-off procedure.

(5)

Use of Nitrile or HBNR in High pH depends on type of fluid, temperature and concentration.

(6)

Aromatic Solvents include: benzene, xylene, MEK, toluene, etc.

(7)

Halogenated Solvents include: carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, trichlorethane, etc.

(8)

Cost Factor: a guideline only; refers only to the cost of the material (compound).

(9)

Maximum Temperature Limit: Listed is the temperature above which serious deterioration of the rubber is likely to occur. This is for applications having a good backup system for the rubber (such as O-rings with backup rings, packer elements with petal plates or garter springs, etc.) Rod Guides, Drillpipe Protectors and Control Line Protectors seem to perform well up to 250° F (121° C) due to the specialized rubber compounding used in the products. For applications having no backup system, such as all rubber swab cups, the practical limit is 200° F (93° C), due to softening of the rubber. Having a limited backup system, such as wire reinforced swab cups or standard packer cups, the practical temperature limit is 225° F (107° C).

GUIBERSON GW Packer Cup Performance Verification Cameron’s GUIBERSON GW packer cups have been an industry performance leader for more than 50 years. As part of a continuing improvement process, performance verification was done on production GW packer cups. The cups were 22- to 24-lb, 7” cups taken from stock. Oil-resistant nitrile rubber (NBR) and hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) GW packers cups were tested in hydrocarbon oil from ambient temperature to 350° F (177° C) to simulate typical oilfield applications. Test pressure was applied in discrete steps that varied with the test temperature shown. The test pressure was held for one hour at each step. These temperature/pressure tests were repeated for three cycles followed by the same pressure steps at ambient temperature. Both the NBR and HNBR GUIBERSON packer cups successfully passed this performance verification. Pressure (psi)

Ethylene propylene diene (EPDM) GW packer cups were tested in water/steam to a similar test sequence but at higher temperatures and lower pressures to simulate requirements in the field for steam injection or SAG D. The first two temperature cycles were performed to 550° F (288° C). Again, the GUIBERSON packer cups successfully completed performance verification. Pressure (psi)
