Who Is Antonio Pigaffeta? Pigafetta's exact year of birth is not known, with estimates ranging between 1480 and 1491. A birth year of 1491 would have made him around 30 years old during Magellan's expedition, which historians have considered more probable than an age close to 40.

Pigafetta belonged to a rich family city of Vicenza in northeast Italy. In his youth he studied astronomy, geography and cartography.

 

Who Is Antonio Pigaffeta? An Italian scholar and explorer from the Republic of Venice. He traveled with the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand and voyage his crew by order of King Charles I of Magellan Spain on their around the world.

The first chronicler who accompanied Magellan in his circumnavigation of the world. One of the 18 men who returned to Spain in 1522.

 

Who Is Antonio Pigaffeta? Pigafetta’s travelogue, The First Voyage Around The World, contributed immensely to the enrichment of Philippine writing provided us a glimpse ofhistoriography. the political,Hiseconomic, and social conditions of the islands in the Visayan region during 60th century.

 

What Makes Him Reliable? He is a primary source and he was present during the expedition. During the voyage, which started in August 1519, Pigafetta collected extensive data concerning the geography, and visited. the native inhabitants ofclimate, the placesflora, that thefauna expedition

 

Who Is erdinand Magellan?  born 1480, Sabrosa or Porto?, Magellan died on April 27, 1521, in Mactan, Philippines A Portuguese navigator and explorer  who sailed under the flags of both Portugal (1505–13) and Spain (1519–21). Magellan was the son of Rui de Magalhães and Alda de Mesquita, members of the Portuguese nobility.

King Charles I Provided Magellan 5 ships under his command. the ships are Trinidad, San Antonio, Victoria, Victori a, Conception, Santiago

 

Who Is erdinand Magellan? Magellan served his country Portugal but after falling out of favor and quarrelling with King D. Manuel,  he left for maritime Spain, got married and devoted his time studying charts. He discovered the straight of Magellan while leading the first expedition to successfully circumnavigate the globe. Though he was killed in the Philippines, one of his ships continued westward to Spain, accomplishing the first circumnavigation of Earth.

 

September 20, 1519 Magellan set sail from Spain in an effort to find a western sea route to the rich Spice Islands of Indonesia.

they arrived at the Canary Islands where he settled for a few days to gather supplies. As they sailed towards South America they slowly started running out of supplies, which called for another supply stop.

Magellan avoided Brazil as it is a Portuguese territory territor y.

 

A mutiny broke-out in two of the five ships

APRIL 2, 1520

while at Puerto san Julian. It was unsuccessful as majority of the crew remained loyal to Magellan. Captains Quesada and Mendoza  were executed while Juan Sebastian Elcano was forgiven. Captain Cartagena and a priest named De la Reina were marooned on the coast. When the journey resumed, SANTIAGO was sent for a scouting expedition to find a shorter way through the pacific ocean. The ship was caught in a sudden storm. The ship got wrecked  but all its crew survived

 

October The remaining21, ships1520 reached Cape Virgenes November 1, 1520 The ships started navigating the long canal that Magellan named “Estrecho de Todos Los Santos

November 20, 1520 Magellan commanded Concepcion and San Antonio to explore the strait. SAN ANTONIO However, deserted the fleet and went back to Spain .

The strait is now named “Strait of Magellan”.

 

NORTH NORTH PACIFIC PACIFIC

November 28, 1520 The remaining ships entered the South pacific

SOUTH PACIFIC

Magellan named the waters Mar Pacifico (Pacific Ocean)  because of its apparent stillness.

 

March 1521 Guam and6, Marianas They named Guam “Landrones Island” (Island of Thieves) because Trinidad’s Trinidad’s small boats were stolen in this island.

March 15, 1521 When they sighted the Philippine Island. Magellan reached the island of Homonhon together with the remaining 150 members of his fleet. They became the first Spaniards to reach the Philippines

 

First Mass In Limasawa

The first Catholic mass in the Philippines was on Easter Sunday of March 31, 1521 officiated by Father Pedro de Valderrama in the shore of a town islet named as Limasawa in the tip of Southern Leyte. Rajah Siaui of Mazau accompanied Magellan to cebu. Rajah Humabon and Magellan becames friends together with the rajah’s wife, they were  baptized as Christian.

 

Magellan had wished to convert Lapu-Lapu of the nearby island Mactan to Christianity. But latter however dismissed the proposal. Datu Lapu-Lapu was an enemy to Rajah Humabon. Together with Datu Zula. Humabon convinced Magellan to kill Lapu-Lapu. When the fights begin, Magellan was killed. The casualties suffered by the Spaniards left them too few men to sail the 3 remaining ships.

 

May 2, 1521. They decided to abandon and burned CONCEPCION. they then fled to Palawan.

June 21, 1521

TRINIDAD and VICTORIA left Palawan and remained anchored in brunei for 35 days.

November 16,1521 The two remaining ships reached Muluku island(spice island) with 115 crew. They traded with sultan of tidore , who is a rival of sultan of ternate, an ally of Portugal.

 

December 21, 1521  VICTORIA set sail via Indian ocean on its way back to Spain. The shipwas commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano. 20 of the crew died of starvation before reaching Cape Verde. Elcano abandoned 13 more of his crew in Cape Verde on July 9, 1522 in fear of losing his cargo of 26 tons of spices.

 

PACIFIC OCEAN Several weeks later, TRINIDAD left and attempted to return to Spain via pacific ocean. The ship however was captured by the Portuguese. TRINIDAD was wrecked in a storm while anchored under Portuguese control.

September 6, 1522 three years after they departed, VICTORIA returned home to Spain with only 18 crew members.
