Fans of the British comedy icon and star of US hit show House may not even know about Laurie’s foray into music. However, to call his music career just a side-project would be doing it a serious injustice. He plays just about every instrument imaginable and is indebted to the New Orleans blues sound. See one of the great entertainers of our generation.

1980s metal band Skid Row are hitting New Zealand for a three-show tour. While their original singer may have left the band they haven’t lost any of their intensity. Ugly Kid Joe are no strangers to success themselves, check out their new album Stairway To Hell. This is an epic double-billing for metal fans.

Chali 2Na is a hip hop artist and founding member of Jurassic 5. To fans of the seminal group his voice will be instantly recognizable. With a baritone as deep as Barry White, Chali 2Na is the gangster of love and love is definitely what he’s preaching. He exudes a friendliness on the mic while also assaulting the beat with his lyrical prowess.

A native of North Carolina, this singersongwriter spins narrative ballads with the same raw beauty as Emmylou Harris. The Tuning Fork is on a roll at the moment showcasing some great country and Americana acts - Merritt is certainly one of these. Her recent albums have features some of the biggest names in alt-country including My Morning Jacket and Andrew Bird.

The modern reincarnation of the band includes core members from their formative years and their most successful ‘70s period.

Leigh’s charming Sawmill venue is a gem of the north and it provides an awesome setting for Don Walker, songwriter from Cold Chisel. He will be playing with The Bads, who invited him here for a tour. Walker documented the seedy underbelly of Australia like no other and is a songwriter’s songwriter, showing others how it is done.

Winners of the renowned Taite Music Prize, Into The East will be playing a secluded and atmospheric gig in Hokitika. The band has been picking up momentum gradually over the past months touring. Their performances have been described as containing hints of Fleetwood Mac in their tight poetic harmonies. Their sound will be a great accompaniment to the picturesque surroundings.

This guy is popular with the ladies. Tickets to his concert would sell in the blink of an eye without even a passing reference to his music. But his music holds its own, a long worked-on labour of love. Expect his signature bluesy sound mixed with his earlier acoustic classics.

The story revolves around Emmet, who is your average Lego-man thrust into greatest by a case of mistaken identity.

NELSON

A slapstick comedy where a man’s love for his dog and the woman that dumped him fuse into one. The story, set in the affluent and idyllic sector of Rio, has the audience laughing at the absurdity of affection and the lengths people are willing to go to get back what they love.

NELSON

This film documents the Brazilian jazz style known as bossa nova (meaning literally “new trend”), a more laidback and sunnier style to the grittier jazz of the US. A comedy that follows a group of hapless Brazilians as they head to the Big Apple to stamp their mark on the city. The laughs this fish-out-ofwater comedy brings are matched only by the fingerclicking soundtrack.

Gaming

METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES PS4

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is definitely a matter of quality over quantity. While the full price-tag is never quite justified, it is one of the best stealth-gameplay experiences I’ve had the pleasure of playing. It’s true that the end credits roll after a startling short amount of gameplay – but players will notice that upon returning back to the main menu, they will have only explored around 10% of the game. After this, different missions will open up, with interesting new objectives to explore. As fans of the series will expect, the game is still a visual masterpiece, especially on the PS4. But what is a surprise is how conservative the game’s creator and director Hideo Kojima has been with the cinematic cut-scenes. Usually the Metal Gear Solid titles are filled with exhaustingly long cutscenes that would rival some of James Cameron’s three-hour epics. But here they are effectively brief, beautifully rendered and packed full of emotion and atmospheric punch, which set the tone for the whole game. Ground Zeroes still centres around the legendary protagonist Big Boss, aka Snake, efficiently voiced by Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland. Snake’s main objective is to infiltrate a prison camp known as Camp Omega and rescue fellow intelligence agents. While doing so, Ground Zeroes doesn’t force you to play in any particular manner. Yes, the game is more engineered around an adrenaline-pumping stealth experience, but you can opt to charge into the prison camp with all guns blazing, blowing stuff up and screaming blue murder if you’d rather. Just be prepared to wear the consequences of your trigger-happy fingers. There is a sense of pioneering with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and not all of it will be welcome. There is a whole new sinister tone to this latest title which alarmingly moves away from the franchise’s quirky, Japanese-centric humour. Sneaking around under a cardboard box, cartoonish exclamation marks, and toilet humour gave the game its semigoofy identity. However Ground Zeroes touches on some very dark subject matter, including rape, torture and even underage sex. Tread with caution. It’s also not the epic adventure that PS4 fans have been begging for since the console launched, so this could be a rental title until the price drops. ANGUS DEACON

JUST FOR THE RECORD A group of vinyl enthusiasts are getting together for drinks and nibbles and no doubt spinning some records to celebrate record store day this year… a “love of vinyl” party if you will! Then going for a pizza dinner because pizza is round just like a record. Duh.

The plight of the Record Industry has had some interesting effects on the way we listen to music. While CD sales have plummeted, the sale of vinyl has found a special niche and sales are the best they have been in years. Classics are being re-released and new music is continually being pressed. Record Store Day celebrates the cult of the record store, the beautiful scent of the bargain bin and the exciting not-knowing that comes from browsing the aisles ready to be seduced by an interesting looking record sleeve. It has become an internationally recognised day, celebrating independently owned stores and institutions such as Real Groovy, who will be celebrating the day in their own unique way. There will be exclusive vinyl releases, so let this day be a wake- up call to all those that cast vinyl into oblivion with relics such as VHS and tapes. Vinyl is back so head to your nearest record store to be convinced.

The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Edward Norton

through something else. Does Wes allow improvisation? You do have to surrender to Wes’s precision, and the idea that your improvisational capacity to put a twist on something will be restricted to the confines of the rhythm that Wes has written it in. Working with Wes is like, “No, I don’t want you to change a word, I don’t want you to extemporise it. But within that, give me everything you’ve got.” What’s it like for the younger cast coming into that atmosphere? The kids on Moonrise Kingdom were great, but I think Wes moulded them. Maybe it’s because Tony is a little older; he was very adept at grasping Wes’s rhythms of comedy and delivery. He was impressive. I think, like Jason (Schwartzman), he had an intuitive feeling for the aspirational quality of that young person in this adult world.

OSCAR-NOMINATED ACTOR Edward Norton joined an all-star cast, including Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton and Owen Wilson, for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Norton plays Henckels, the captain of the military police in Anderson’s vividly imagined, fictitious European country of Zubrowka. Set in the 1930s as war looms on the horizon, The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H., a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel, and Zero Moustafa, a lobby boy who becomes his closest friend. The story involves the theft of a priceless Renaissance painting, a raging battle for a family fortune and a love affair – all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent. Did you guys decide to work together again after Moonrise Kingdom? Yeah. Wes and I exchanged mutual appreciation a long time ago. He saw me in a play and sent me a really nice letter, and I had written to him about his films. I think we both had this notion that it would be great to do something. We really enjoy working together.

GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

What did you make of The Grand Budapest Hotel when you first read the script? I thought it was great. I thought that Gustave was one of the best characters Wes had ever written. His worldview is so funny and memorable, with all of his righteous indignation. It was so funny and touching, as Wes’s stuff often is: there’s a lot of humour, but also poignancy underneath. It reminded me of Max Fischer (from Rushmore) or Steve Zissou, characters who are pressing for an aesthetic vision of the world. Max Fischer’s not fighting change, he’s fighting against being pigeonholed. I’ve come to think that Wes’s films are all about the way your real family disappoints you so you create the family that you need. Like the frequent appearance of orphans? Yes, or the characteristics of Gustave. You know very little about him, but you realise nothing that came before matters. He’s created this world and populated it with people that affirm his worldview. Like Tony Revolori’s character, the lobby boy. Life has left him adrift, but through Gustave, he finds the family he needs. I don’t think there’s a single one of Wes’s films that aren’t about people with some sort of loss, or a sense of deficit in their life, trying to create community and family

How does Wes assemble these incredible casts? Prolific actors seem happy to take smaller roles. As Bill [Murray] said, “you lose money on the job,” literally [laughs]. But I think Wes creates a community that hits a nerve in many actors. There’s a romance to something like Saturday Night Live or a repertory theatre – a gang that hangs together and does things over and over, and one has a bigger part this time and a smaller part next time. He’s carved this little redoubt against the cynical big budget movie-making experience, which feels very fractured. Does he show you things before you start filming? Wes references literature and lots of films. He usually provides a literal library. He does animated storyboards. He even voices them. It’s the most efficient way to get to it, to hear him say it, because he has a very unique rhythm. I do think even with his controlled way of doing things, Wes loves to get surprised by a funny rhythm or delivery. You can get him to change things a little bit. There’s always a little bit of room.
