SUMMARY The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families. Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC, serving all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country. It has state and regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and San Antonio. BACKGROUND NCLR is seeking a Graphic Designer I to execute projects in all phases (design, layout, editing, typesetting, and print management). The Graphic Designer will also organize requests and present estimates for printing, process all printing order requests related to assigned projects, and track, acknowledge, and follow up on most ongoing electronic and print publications. This position reports to the Deputy Vice President of IME RESPONSIBILITIES  

Collaborates with the Graphics Team in the design layout, typesetting, and editing of reports, papers, brochures, and all collateral pieces for all components and keeps Director informed of progress in main stages of the process Designs major reports, training manuals, newsletters and their special editions, collaboration briefs, legislative updates, invitations, flyers, and brochures

  

Designs and coordinates signage requests for events, reports sign count, and tracks delivery locations Coordinates requests and presents estimates for printing for assigned projects from at least three printers according to the publication type (digital or conventional) Presents all blue lines to the Director before submitting to requester for final approval

Bachelor’s degree (BA) or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience Careful use of corporate/institutional logos and colors Able to work with printers under tight printing deadlines Have working knowledge of NCLR style, how logos are used, and where they should be positioned on NCLR products Able to maintain control of a variety of projects and deadlines that may occur simultaneously Able to prepare and create documents with ease and accuracy

Able to visualize and conceptualize ideas and suggestions given by the individuals requesting design ideas Knowledge of how to work with printing facilities and a strong grasp of the technical language used during the process of preparing materials for print Able to write routine reports and correspondence Able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization Able to interact in a bilingual (English/Spanish) atmosphere (preferred) Able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages Able to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations Moderate to expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, QuarkXpress, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word Good telephone manner and communication skills Professional attitude toward work, staff, and visitors Working knowledge of office machines Flexible; able and willing to work occasional overtime, and travel at least once a year Able to accept and build on feedback Interest in and commitment to Latino community
