A New Mission for Julie Payette
On July �3, Prime Minister Justin rudeau announced that Julie Payette will become Canada’s ��th governor general. Te �3-year-old ormer astronaut takes on the new mission this all, when David Johnston, the current governor general, steps down. She will be the ourth woman to assume the role. “From the �rst moment the idea came up, it was obvious to me that she would make an extraordinary governor general,” said the Prime Minister. “She is unquestionably quali�ed.” Talent and hard work

In the early years, Canada’s government had autonomy over internal affairs, but the monarch, communicating via the governor general, had the �nal say on oreign affairs. As we matured rom colony to country, the balance began to shif, and so did the role o the governor general. In ����, the �rst Canadian governor general, a diplomat named Vincent Massey, was appointed. His successor, Georges-Philéa s Vanier, was a decorated mi litar y officer. Subsequent governors general alternated between rancophone and anglophone, changing every �ve years or so, a tradition that continues today. A New Mission for Julie Payette Her duties include giving royal assent to new laws and swearing in the prime minister, other elected officials, and Supreme Court justices. She delivers the throne speech that officially opens every new session o Parliament. She also dissolves Parliament when a government’s time is up. “It is a critical non-partisan role that can have a direct effect on the stability o Canada’s government,” said Andrew Scheer, the new leader o the ederal Conservative Party. Canada’s governor general is also Commander-in-Chief o the Canadian Armed Forces, and she has the honour o awarding military medals and civilian honours like the Order of Canada . Home away from home
Astronauts ofen sleep in very small places. Governors general, however, have a bit more room to spread their wings. Ms. Payette will perorm many o her duties at one o her two official residences. She listened as Neil Armstrong, the �rst person on the moon, declared “Tat’s one small step or a man, one giant leap or mankind.” “Someday,” she promised hersel, “that will be me.” In ����, Ms. Payette got her chance. Tat year, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) put out the call or new astronauts and received �33� applications or only our spots in the program. Marc Garneau, the Federal Minister o ransport, was on the selection committee. “We recognized that she was somebody with tremendous talent,” said the ormer astronaut. “It was a no-brainer.” She �ew her �rst mission in ����, aboard the space shuttle Discovery . Te new mission specialist helped to build the International Space Station (ISS) , operating the Canadarm robotic arm. From ���� to ����, she served as Chie Astronaut o the CSA. Ten, in ����, she visited the space station again, this time as a crew member o the space shutt le Endeavour . By the time she retired rom the CSA, she’d spent ��� hours in space and travelled a total distance o �� million kilometres. She was the second Canadian woman in space, afer Roberta Bondar, and the �rst Canadian aboard the ISS.
