Gooogle Hacking at your finger tips By: Er.Rishi Aggarwal

Preface In the late nineteenth century there was a drastic change in the way people worked. The credit of this change in the lives goes to the introduction of computer technology in India. Everything, which was done manually, was now on computers. Be it education, entertainment or vital sectors like banking computers soon was the lifeline of these sectors. As it made the life as easy as anything people not only adopted this technology but they become addicted to it. Second revolution came in the form of Internet, which was welcomed by people whole-heartedly. Not knowing about the disadvantages of Internet people made it an integral part of their lives. But soon this boon was used for some anti social elements for wrong use and disturbing people in the form of computer hacking. Computer hacking is a process when somebody breaks into a computer system, usually without permission. This tactic is sometimes employed by identity thieves to steal personal information such as social security numbers, account numbers, and more--to further their pursuits of stealing identities. The only way to tackle the situation is to have knowledge about the computer hacking.

CHAPTER 1: Redefining the hacking

Many n many times, we take a meaning of hacking in a wrong sense. We always think about the negative image of hacking, but we don’t even know that we don’t know about HACKING, which is a process of getting some extra knowledge about a particular field. In this book we will discuss about “HACKING OF GOOGLE” which doesn’t mean to crack the Google server but in actual it means to grasp the tricks and tips to work with Google more effectively.

CHAPTER 2: Introduction to Goggle

As taken from (www.bytestart.co.uk/content/promotion/7_5/an-introduction-to-g oogle.shtml) Google.com gets its name from "Googol", the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros (i.e. a very large number). Larry Page and Sergey Brin who met first as Stanford University students founded it. The Company opened for business in 1998. With over 3 billion web pages indexed, alongside regular new products such as News feeds, its simple design and ease of use (together with accuracy of course) makes it an essential search engine to be listed on. Most sites now derive the majority of their traffic from Google.

CHPATER 5: Google search engine A Google search engine is a Computer software program designed to help users of the Internet locate information on the World Wide Web. It collects and indexes Internet resources (Web pages, Usenet Newsgroups, programs, images, etc.) and provides a keyword search system allowing the user to identify and retrieve resources. The most important thing to note about Google is that it shares each and every page and a file of collected and indexed resources.

CHAPTER 6: Google operators Google offers special terms known as advanced operators to help you perform more advanced queries. These operators, when used properly, can help you get to exactly the information you’re looking for without spending too much time poring over page after page of search results. When advanced operators are not provided in a query, Google will locate your search terms in any area of the Webpage, including the title, the text, the URL, or the like. We take a look at the following Advanced operators: · intitle, allintitle · inurl, allinurl · Filetype · Allintext · Site · Link · Inanchor · Daterange · Cache

· Info · Related · Phonebook · Rphonebook · Bphonebook · Author · Group · Msgid · Insubject · Stocks · Define Few of them are explained

Intitle: intitle: restricts your search to the titles of web pages. The variation, allintitle: finds pages wherein all the words specified make up the title of the web page. It's probably best to avoid the allintitle: variation, because it doesn't mix well with some of the other syntaxes. intitle:"george bush" allintitle:"money supply" economics

Inurl:

inurl: restricts your search to the URLs of web pages. This syntax tends to work well for finding search and help pages, because they tend to be rather regular in composition. An allinurl: variation finds all the words listed in a URL but doesn't mix well with some other special syntaxes. inurl:help allinurl:search help

Intext: intext: searches only body text (i.e., ignores link text, URLs, and titles). There's an allintext: variation, but again, this doesn't play well with others. While its uses are Limited, it's perfect for finding query words that might be too common in URLs or link Titles. intext:"yahoo.com" intext:html

Inanchor: inanchor: searches for text in a page's link anchors. A link anchor is the descriptive text of a link. For example, the link anchor in the HTML

code

smith

associate is "Rishi Aggarwal " inanchor:"tom peters"

and

Site: Site: allows you to narrow your search by either a site or a top-level domain. AltaVista, for example, has two syntaxes for this function (host: and domain:), but Google has only the one. site:loc.gov site:thomas.loc.gov site:edu site:nc.us

Link: link: returns a list of pages linking to the specified URL. Enter link: www.google.com and you'll be returned a list of pages that link to Google.

Cache: cache: finds a copy of the page that Google indexed even if that page is no longer available at its original URL or has since changed its content completely. This is particularly useful for pages that change often. If Google returns a result that appears to have little to do with your query, you're almost sure to find what you're looking for in the latest cached version of the page at Google. cache:www.yahoo.com

Daterange:

daterange: limits your search to a particular date or range of dates that a page was indexed. It's important to note that the search is not limited to when a page was created, but when Google indexed it. So a page created on February 2 and not indexed by Google until April 11 could be found with date range: search on April 11.

Filetype: filetype: searches the suffixes or filename extensions. These are usually, but not necessarily, different file types. I like to make this distinction, because searching for filetype: htm and filetype: html will give you different result counts, even though they're the same file type. You can even search for different page generators, such as ASP, PHP, CGI, and so forth—presuming the site isn't hiding them behind redirection and proxying. Google indexes several different Microsoft formats, including: PowerPoint (PPT), Excel (XLS), and Word (DOC). homeschooling filetype:pdf "leading economic indicators" filetype:ppt

Related: related: as you might expect, finds pages that are related to the specified page. Not all pages are related to other pages. This is a good way to find categories of pages; a search for related: google.com

would return a variety of search engines, including HotBot, Yahoo!, and Northern Light. related:www.yahoo.com related:www.cnn.com

Info:

info: provides a page of links to more information about a specified URL. Information includes a link to the URL's cache, a list of pages that link to that URL, pages that are related to that URL, and pages that contain that URL. Note that this information is dependent on whether Google has indexed that URL or not. If Google hasn't indexed that

Phonebook: phonebook: as you might expect, looks up phone numbers. phonebook:John Doe CA phonebook:(510) 555-1212

Few examples Using Google search engine operators we cannot only find web pages, Usenet Newsgroups, programs, images but also we can find a lot of interesting information. For Example we can find: *Credit Card Numbers

*Passwords *Software / MP3's Given below is just a example of interesting searches that we can send to google to obtain info that some people might not want us having. After you get a sample using some of these, try your own crafted searches to find info that you would be interested in. Try a few of these searches: *put this string in google search: · ?intitle:index.of? mp3 You only need add the name of the song/artist/singer. Example: ?intitle:index.of? mp3 jackson · inurl:microsoft filetype:iso You can change the string to watever you want, ex. microsoft to adobe, iso to zip etc… · "# -FrontPage-" inurl:service.pwd Frontpage passwords. Very nice clean search results listing!! · "AutoCreate=TRUE password=*" This searches the password for "Website Access Analyzer", Japanese software that creates web statistics. For those who can read Japanese, check out the author's site at: http://www.coara.or.jp/~passy/ · "http://*:*@www" domainname

This is a query to get inline passwords from search engines (not just Google), you must type in the query followed with the domain name without the .com or .net · "http://*:*@www" bangbus or "http://*:*@www"bangbus Another way is by just typing · "http://bob:bob@www" · "sets mode: +k" This search reveals channel keys (passwords) on IRC as revealed from IRC chat logs. · allinurl: admin mdb Not all of these pages are administrator's access databases containing usernames, passwords and other sensitive information, but many are! · allinurl:auth_user_file.txt DCForum's password file. This file gives a list of (crackable) passwords, usernames and email addresses for DCForum and for DCShop (a shoppingcart program(!!!). Some lists are bigger than others, all are fun, and all belong to googledorks. =) · intitle:"Index of" config.php This search brings up sites with "config.php" files. To skip the technical discussion, this configuration file contains both a username and a password for an SQL database. Most sites with forums run a

PHP message base. This file gives you the keys to that forum, including FULL ADMIN access to the database. · eggdrop filetype:user user These are eggdrop config files. Avoiding a full-blown discussion about eggdrops and IRC bots, suffice it to say that this file contains usernames and passwords for IRC users. · intitle:index.of.etc This search gets you access to the etc directory, where many types of password files can be found. This link is not as reliable, but crawling etc directories can be really fun! · filetype:bak inurl:"htaccess|passwd|shadow|htusers"

This will search for backup files (*.bak) created by some editors or even by the administrator himself (before activating a new version). Every attacker knows that changing the extension of a file on a web-server can have ugly consequences. Let's pretend you need a serial number for Windows Xp pro. In the google search bar type in just like this – · "Windows XP Professional" 94FBR The key is the 94FBR code. It was included with many MS Office

registration codes so this will help you dramatically reduce the amount of 'fake' porn sites that trick you Or if you want to find the serial for winzip 8.1 – · "Winzip 8.1" 94FBR Write these cheats on Google: · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) inurl:(http+forum) (exe|zip|rar|r01) "index of"+"parent directory" · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) (exe|zip|rar|r01|7z) intitle:"index of" ("portable"+"winrar") · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) (mp3|wma|ogg|7z|zip|rar) · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) (dir) (exe|zip|rar|r01|7z) "index of" · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) (vid|dir) (mpg|avi|mov) "index of" · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) (vid|dir) (mpg|avi|mov) "parent directory" "infoman" · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) ("[VID]"|"[DIR]") "parent directory" (mpg|avi|mov) "infoman" · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) "index of /"+(mpg|wmv|avi) · inurl:(htm|html|php|asp) ("index of"|"Parent directory") "S01E01" (xvid|dvdrip) "index of" site:membres.lycos.fr

3. Google Does Translations The more powerful way to use google translation can be found at Google's language tools: http://www.google.com/language_tools From this page google will allow you to do several things: 1. Translate any entered text 2. Translate any particular URL 3. Search for pages within a certain country or in a certain language only 4. Set Your Default Language 5. See Google's default page in multiple different languages Manual Google Translations =--If you really want to be crafty, you can use google's language tools without going through the language tools page at all. I have underlined the important parts of the URL below: · http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fw ww.indianhans.i8.com&langpair=en%7Ces The url above with have google translate www.indianhans.i8.com into Spanish. Although not functional, the symbolic url allows you to see which items to replace.

· French

= fr

· Italian

· Portuguese

= pt

A few combinations do not work. So if you want to translate Italian to Portuguese, you'll have to wait a while.

4. Get Latitude and Longitude values from Google Maps Google Maps do not display latitude and longitude values, but there is an easy trick to get these numbers. This technique will provide the latitude and longitude coordinates of the center of the map displayed by Google Maps. Looking up an address in Google Maps will center the map on that address if it was found. Because this trick provides the latitude and longitude of the center of the map, moving the map

around manually after that will change the center position and this technique will not work accurately. When the location, you want is in the center of the map, copy and paste this code into the location bar of your browser and press enter: javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter())); A little dialog box will pop up displaying the coordinates which can be copied and pasted for use elsewhere. This code can be bookmarked and then used in the future by selecting the bookmark.

5. Google for Free iTunes Plus (.m4a) Songs iTunes now allows users to buy DRM free songs. These songs have no copy protection. Will people start posting these for public consumption? Here is a nice google search to find folders and directories full of these DRM free files. Files with the .m4a extension are mp4 files without copy protection. This is the format in which iTunes plus songs are delivered. These songs may not contain DRM; however, they frequently do contain watermarks containing user info and the email address that originally purchased the files.

The powerful searches described below will find folders and directories that contain these DRM free iTunes plus files. For years people have been demanding a DRM free format. This search can be used for good or for evil. Gut check. Will you support Apple's brave decision or go for the cheap music? All m4a files... Google:- inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "Last modified" m4a

Or for specific file. Replace band with whichever search term you wish...

Google: -inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "Last modified" m4a band Please note... all of these files will not be iTunes plus files as the m4a format was in use prior to Apple's decision to sell in this format. However, they will typically be DRM-free music files.

CHAPTER 7: Orkut (From Wikipedia) Orkut was launched on January 22, 2004 by the search company Google, the brainchild of Orkut Büyükkökten, a Turkish software engineer, who developed it as an independent project while working at Google. Some discomfort with this exists among users and potential users of Orkut, especially since Google's other noteworthy product of 2004, the Web-based email client Gmail, had servers scan

emails for keywords in order to deliver advertisements targeted at them, which meant to some that Google was "reading your e-mail". In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Orkut Büyükkökten and Google based Orkut on inCircle code. Originally, the Orkut community was felt to be elite, because its membership was by invitation only. At the end of July 2004 Orkut surpassed the 1,000,000 member mark, and at the end of September it surpassed the 2,000,000 mark. As of 9th April, 2007, the number of members was over 49 million. Orkut's use as a social tool is complex, because various people frequently try to add strangers to their own pool of friends, often just to increase the number indicating their number of friends next to their name in their profile. Many "add-me" communities exist, solely for this purpose. Loop-hole regarding the orkut password. Whenever a password is set for an account, orkut rates whether it is strong, fair or weak. Now as we all know a strong password is the one containing alphanumeric and symbols like *, &, %, # etc. So whenever all these things are included in the password it should be rated as STRONG PASSWORD. But in orkut rating even if you enter a random number greater then 6 digits it gets rated as Strong Password.

For Example: if you enter password as 25468669(any random number) it will get rated as Strong. But as we know it isn’t. This password will surely take less time to crack by brute force attack as it

contains only numerals. To fix this loop-hole orkut needs to check for the symbols (!,@,#,$,%,^,&,*,) as well combination of alpha-numerals and many more special characters. If the password contains any of these symbols then only it should be rated as ‘STRONG PASSWORD’. There are number of tricks that take a user to the highest extent of fun, to play around. These tricks may be of · Simple tricks · JavaScript tricks · Mozilla scripts · Tricky softwares

CHAPTER 8: Google Talk

Google Talk is Google's instant communications service. Like Gmail, Google's free web-mail service, Google Talk uses Google's innovative technologies to help people communicate more effectively and efficiently. This means Google Talk is fast, intuitive and fun to use. It also means you can start thinking about instant communications in a new way. Google Talk offers you different ways to integrate real time communications into your online experience. The Google Talk Gadget lets you see who's online and send instant messages from your Google Personalized Homepage, without installing any software. You can also add the same instant messaging capabilities to your own webpage or blog by cutting and pasting a single line of code. And by downloading the Google Talk Client, you can make voice calls and transfer files to your friends. And if you use Gmail, Google Talk offers you even more. You'll find all of your Gmail contacts organized in your Talk contacts list. Gmail also archives all of your Google Talk chats and makes them searchable. And since Google Talk is integrated into Gmail, you'll be able to chat with all your Talk contacts there, too.

Registry Tweaks You can edit most settings by opening regedit (start -> regedit)

Navigating to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk.

The "Google/Google Talk" key has several sub-keys that hold different option values: Accounts: This one has sub-keys for each different account that has logged in on the client. These keys have different values that store the username, password and connection options.

Auto-update: Stores the current version information. When the client checks for updates it compares Google's response with these values. If an update is needed, it will download and update the new version. Options: This is the most interesting part, where most of the current hacks should be used (keep reading). Process: Stores the process ID. Probably used by Google Talk to detect if it's already running or not. · HKEY_ CURRENT_ US ER\S oftwa re\Goog le\Goog le Talk\Options\show_pin If 1, shows a "pin" next to the minimize button that keeps the windows on top of all the other open windows when clicked. · HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\view_show_taskbutton

If 0, hides the taskbar button, and leaves the tray icon only, when the window is shown · HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\away_inactive If 1, status will be set as Away after the specified number of minutes. · HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\away_screensaver If 1, status will be set as Away after the specified number of minutes. · HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\inactive_minutes Number of inactive minutes to become away if auto-away is on.

Tricks Change the font size - While holding the control key, move the scroll wheel on your mouse either up or down. This trick works while being focused in either the read or write area.

Insert line breaks - If you want to have a message that spans multiple paragraphs, just hold shift and hit enter. You can add as many new lines as you want to create. Bold Text - To write something bold, you can use an asterisk before and after the word, like *this*. Italic Text - To use italics, use an underscore before an after the word, like this. Switch windows - Hitting tab will cycle through open windows. It will select minimized conversations, to expand them just hit enter. If you just want to cycle through IM's and don't care about the buddy list, control-tab will do that and will automatically expand a minimized conversation if you settle on one. Invitation Tips - You don’t need to say Yes or No when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this in the options). Show Hyperlinks - You can show your homepage or blog URL simply by entering it in your away message (at the top of the main window). It will automatically turn to a link visible to others. A message can be 32767 characters long.

How to Conference Calls: What you need to do to have conference calls: Open up a copy of Google Talk on all computers with which you wish to conference. After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for Google Talk but at the end of it add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex.

Open 2nd instances of the software on every user's computer. After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.

Nickname & Status Message: You can't change your nickname in a way that other people will see it change. Every nickname in the Google Talk contact list is the part

that is before @gmail.com (only the alphabetical characters are used) or the name you chosen for your GMail account. To change the nickname need to go to your Gmail account and change the name there. Choose Settings, Accounts, and then Edit info. Click on the second radio button, and enter your custom name. As a result all of your emails will have that nick as well; there is no way to separate the two. You can add a website in your custom message; it will be clickable when someone opens a conversation window with you.

The Gmail account '[email protected]' can't be invited as your friend.

Play Music : It's possible to broadcast music, MP3, etc through Google Talk. Unplug your microphone. Double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. This will open up "Volume Control". Select "Options" and then "Properties". Then check the button next to "Recording" then click OK. You may also have to change your setting under Mixer Device. Now the Recording Control screen

should be up. On my computer I selected "Wave out Mix". Click on the green phone in Google Talk and call your friend.

Use multiple identities on Google Talk Want to run Google Talk with multiple Gmail identities? If you have several Google Gmail accounts you also may want to run multiple instances of Google Talk This is especially important for families that share a single PC. Nothing worse than a family member signing you out so they can sign in under their own account! Basically, to have "Google Polygamy" you need to run Google Talk with the following switch: /nomutex Step 1: Right-click on the desktop Step 2: Select New Step 3: Select Shortcut Step 4: Paste this into the text box: "c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex Step 5: Click Next and choose a shortcut name such as Google Talk1, Google Talk2, or something related to your Gmail account or easy remembering which account is which. Step 6: Click OK a few times.

Use Google Talk via a Web Browser Step 1: Opens your favorite web browser at the following address : http://www.webjabber.net:8080/jim Step 2: Follow the instructions of the Page. Step 3: You can talk with your friends Google's Secret Command-Line Parameters There are a few secret parameters you can add to Google Talk and make it function differently. The most important, I think, is · /nomutex: which allows you to run more than one instance of GT. · /nomutex: allows you to open more than one instance of Google Talk · /autostart: when Google Talk is run with this parameter, it will check the registry settings to see if it needs to be started or not. CHAPTER 9: Gmail Gmail is Google's free webmail service. It comes with built-in Google search technology and over 2,600 megabytes of storage (and growing every day). You can keep all your important messages, files and pictures forever, use search to quickly and easily find anything you're looking for, and make sense of it all with a new way of viewing messages as part of conversations. There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail, only small text ads. Ads and related information are relevant to your messages, so instead of being obtrusive, they may even be useful for once. Gmail also integrates instant messaging right into the email experience, so you can stay in even better touch with your friends

when you're online. Easy, efficient and maybe even fun to use. It's a whole new way to think about email. It's Google's approach to email.

A Summary of the Login Procedure The login procedure for Gmail seems to be changing on a very regular basis. Basically, however, the login procedure goes like this, with each step moving on only if the previous was reported successful. 1. Request the Gmail page. 2. Set the two cookies. 3. Send the contents of the form. 4. Request the cookie check page. 5. Request the Inbox. One other advantage of using the Gmail SMTP client is that any mail sent via the SMTP gateway is automatically stored within your Gmail account. Trick One final thing about addressing: If you are sending a mail to someone else’s Gmail account, you needn’t add the @gmail.com section of the address. Just type the first half and it is delivered perfectly well Using the SMTP Server Programmatically

If you want to talk directly to the SMTP server instead of using the APIs featured in the rest of this chapter, then you will need to use a library that can deal with TLS encryption. There is no standard module to do this within Perl or PHP at the time of this writing, but Python users can use the standard smtplib, which comes with the Python distribution. You can receive mail and you can send mail, but you have yet to play with Gmail’s main feature—its immense storage capacity. You’ll be using that over the next few chapters. One of the biggest draws to Gmail is the way you organize mail with labels. Labels are quite the fashionable thing on the Internet at the moment: Whether you call them labels or the commonly used idea of tags, it really doesn’t matter. Gmail’s system works in the same way as the other cult Web 2.0 sites, Flickr and del.icio.us. In this chapter, then, you look at working with the labels programmatically, listing them, setting them, changing them, and deleting them. This is a simple matter. When I opened each of these folders, I found these URLS: · Inbox: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/? · Starred:http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=r · Sent Mail:http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=s · Drafts: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=d · All Mail:http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=a

· Spam: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=m · Trash: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/h/q2fuyjw4p8mu/?s=t Ignoring the random seed again, you can see that the s= attribute sets the folder to view. Setting it to anything else but the preceding options returns an error, except, happily setting it to s=i, which gives you the Inbox. So, to retrieve the mail from another folder, you simply form the URL as in the preceding list, send it to the scraping script you wrote earlier in this chapter, and proceed from there. Mark Read Button Documentation: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/689 Userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/689.user.js Multiple Signatures Documentation: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1592 Userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/1592.user.js This is a very smart script indeed. Using the ability to change the reply-to: address within Gmail, it allows the user to change both their e-mail signature. Hide Invites Documentation: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/673 Userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/673.user.js A very simple use of Greasemonkey. This userscript simply hides the box that holds the facility to send Gmail invitations to your friends.

As you have already looked at the way Gmail is constructed, you can modify this userscript yourself to stop the display of any section of the interface. Random Signatures Documentation: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1704 Userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/1704.user.js Gmail signature and also creates an option in the Settings menu to edit the taglines and control how the userscript operates. Sending Mail with Gmail SMTP The first thing to remember is that Gmail provides its own SMTP server. This offers two major features. First, you can use the SMTP server from your own e-mail application, which is a great help if you’re traveling and your usual e-mail provider is unreachable. The second use is that every single scripting language you might have a desire to use has standard SMTP support available as a library, and the support for TLS encryption, which you need to connect to Gmail, is being added apace. First, though, the settings you’ll need: _ Server name: smtp.google.com _ Username: [email protected] _ Password: Your Gmail password _ Security: Yes, using TLS

One thing to note about this technique is that Gmail will rewrite your e-mail headers. It replaces the From: and Reply-to: lines with your Gmail address because Gmail also automatically adds the so-called Domain Keys to their outgoing e-mails, allowing spam-hit system administrators to block fake Gmail mail from their servers.Without the Domain Keys this wouldn’t work, but Gmail can’t send mail with a different From: or Reply-to: address without breaking the Domain Key. · Using the Gmail SMTP server · Sending mail with Perl · Replying to mail with Perl There are many and many tricks around you, explore them at: http://userscripts.org/tag/gmail How to Access a Gmail Account with Outlook Express When you get a Gmail account, you also get tons of online storage on Google servers to keep just about all of your emails. So there is no need to download the messages you receive at your Gmail account to your computer — not for the archiving reason. But there are many other ways in which accessing Gmail accounts in Outlook Express is useful. You can write your messages and replies using all the comfortable power of Outlook Express, for example. You can even use stationery to beautify them while copies of the mail

you send are automatically archived online in Gmail's Sent Mail folder. Access a Gmail Account with Outlook Express To fetch mail from a Gmail account in Outlook Express and send through it, too: ›› Step by Step Screenshot Walkthrough · Make sure POP access is turned on for your Gmail account. · Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Outlook Express. · Click Add | Mail.... · Type your name. · Click Next >. · Enter your Gmail address. · Click Next >. · Make sure POP3 is selected under My incoming mail server is a __ server.. · Type "pop.gmail.com" under Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:. · Enter "smtp.gmail.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:. · Click Next >.

· Type your full Gmail address under Account name:. · Enter your Gmail password under Password:. · Click Next >. · Click Finish. · Highlight the newly created pop.gmail.com account. · Click Properties. · Go to the Servers tab. · Make sure My server requires authentication is checked under Outgoing Mail Server. · Go to the Advanced tab. · Make sure This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked under both Outgoing mail (SMTP): and Incoming mail (POP3):. · Type "465" under Outgoing server (SMTP):. · If the number under Incoming server (POP3): has not been changed to "995" automatically, enter "995" there. · Click OK.

· Click Close. How to Access a Gmail Account with any Email Client via POP With the sheer size available in my Gmail account and the ubiquity, speed and efficiency of its web interface, I am inclined to move all my emails to Gmail. But it is good to know that the mail transfer can happen in the other direction as well. If you want to consolidate all your email addresses at once place, you can have all messages arriving at Gmail be forwarded to another email address automatically. The more direct route is available, too. How POP Access to Gmail Works You can access your Gmail account directly via POP using any email client. Mail downloaded to your email client via POP can either be archived in Gmail, remain unread or be trashed.

To enable POP access to your Gmail account with any email client: Step by Step Screenshot Walkthrough · Choose Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar. · Select the Forwarding and POP tab. · Make sure either Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on is selected.

· Choose Enable POP for all mail if you want to download mail previously received at your Gmail account. Otherwise, select Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on. · Select the action you want applied to mail after you have downloaded it to your email client under when messages are accessed with POP. · Click Save Changes. Set Up Your Email Client for Gmail Access Now set up a new account in your email client: · Eudora · Mac OS X Mail · Mozilla Thunderbird 2.x · Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x · Outlook 2007 · Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003 · Outlook Express · Windows Live Mail desktop If your email program is not listed above, use these settings:

· POP server: pop.gmail.com. · Port: 995. · Require SSL: Yes. · User name: your Gmail email address. · Make sure your user name includes both your Gmail account name and "@gmail.com". If your Gmail account name is "qwertz.qwertz", for example, type "[email protected]" as the user name. · Password: your Gmail password. · SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com. · Port: 465. · Require SSL/STARTTLS: Yes. · Require SMTP authentication: Yes. · User name: your Gmail email address. · Password: your Gmail password.

Gmail: Disable Web Clips Gmail will display little RSS feed sniplets above your gmail content. I personally do not like it. It seems very ad-like to me. If you want

them removed, Google has supplied an easy way to turn it off. I like my RSS feeds in my RSS feed reader, thank you. I'll keep them out of my email client for now. Here is how to turn off the RSS web clippie thing in Gmail: 1. Log into Gmail 2. Click the Settings link in the upper right-hand corner 3. Click the Web Clips link 4. Uncheck Show my web clips above the Inbox 5. Click the big Gmail icon to take you back to the main gmail screen. The web clips should be gone.

you. Use GMail Plus-Addressing to Generate Throw-Away E-Mail Addresses Do not use this service from your main gmail account. Eventually this trick will stop working, and your account will be flooded with spam. You've got to do something with all those gmail invites, right? How many services use email and email validation to use? Forums, free i-tunes, free magazines, free this, and free that.

You know many of these services make money off selling your email address; therefore, you certainly do not want to give them your main email address. Thus the need for throw-away or disposable email addresses. Although many services out there offer this service, gmail is an especially useful tool. Gmail also supports "plus-addressing" of emails. Messages can be sent to addresses in the form: [email protected] where extra text can be any string. Plus-addressing allows users to sign up for different services with different aliases and then easily filter all e-mails from those services. It does not appear, however, that the +string feature works when sending email from a gmail account to itself. Additionally (in some cases) the string appended to the e-mail address may not be longer than six characters. If you gmail account is [email protected] then you can generate additional email accounts by adding text after the plus… Original Account: t h r o w a w a y @ g m a i l . c o m New Accounts: - [email protected] - [email protected] - etc. By using gmail's filtering function with your unique text (dumpa, dumpb, etc.), you can automatically archive these messages if they start getting spammy.

This likely will not work forever. Spammer and websites will soon learn to filter and remove this plus-addressing text. That's one of the advantages of gmail... you can always sign up for another account. Keyboard Shortcuts The keyboard shortcuts available within Gmail are, without any doubt, the quickest route to speedy productivity within the application. The time investment in learning the keyboard shortcuts of all of your computer’s applications always pays off, as you are able to navigate your system much more quickly than before. Instead of reaching off the keyboard, grasping the mouse, moving it to the right place and clicking, keyboard shortcuts allow you to press just one button. You don’t lift your hands off the keyboard, and when you’re really good at typing, you don’t even need to look at the screen. Activating the keyboard shortcuts is simple. Go to the Settings page and turn them on there, as shown in Figure.

Save the settings, and you will find that the bottom of your Inbox screen has changed to show some of the keyboard shortcut commands, as shown in Figure.

To see what keyboard shortcuts are about, press the c key now. Immediately, the page changes to the Compose Message window, with your cursor in the To: addressing area. Type an e-mail address, and then press Tab. Your cursor moves to the Subject line. Type something, and hit Tab again, and you’re in the message box. Now a snag. Hit Tab again, and then Enter, and in Internet Explorer your message is sent. The keyboard shortcuts are many and various, and are all good to know about. But they’re also very simple.
