Reading

A mountain adventure Grace and Jim Stewart have had a wonderful summer adventure in Kenya. Two weeks ago the two teenagers climbed the 5,896 metres of Mount Kilimanjaro with their parents. They climbed for seven days and saw lots of amazing things. The two teenagers are very tired after days spent trekking in the mountains, but they are also very happy. Did they enjoy their time spent climbing one of the world’s highest mountains? ‘I’ll never forget it,’ says Grace. ‘It was very beautiful: tall trees and rainforests … there was always something new to see. It was boiling hot during the day and as we got higher hi gher it got much colder. The nights were freezing! Jim says, ‘We had a very good guide with us who told us lots of stories about the mountain and the plants we saw. Of course, what we saw from the top was the best thing for me – it was amazing!’ How did the family prepare for their climb? Grace laughs. ‘There aren’t any mountains near my home in England, but we went for lots of long walks in the hills. The hardest thing was packing our backpacks – we needed lots of warm clothes and a tent for the evenings, but we didn’t want our bags to be too big and heavy. So what are the family’s plans for the rest of the holiday? Jim says, ‘We’ve never been to Kenya before so we’re going to have a few days on a beach now.’

Experience: I won a ticket to see Teen Talent  1

Talent shows have been my favourite thing on TV since I was a very small, so I was really happy when I won a ticket to go and sit in the audience of Teen Talent  –  – it was a like a dream  for me! I’ve always loved this talent show – the judges are very funny and the music is fantastic. My friends and I usually watch it together on Saturday nights.

Food for life 1

American teenager, Louisa Briggs, has just written a book and she is going to be on TV next week. The book is Food for Life, and it is full of ideas for how teenagers can stay healthy and feel well.

2

Why did she decide to write this book? Fifteen-year-old Fifteen-year-old Louisa says, ‘A year ago I felt really tired all the time and I didn’t know why. I had no energy and I was very unfit! So I decided I needed to do something. When I started feeling healthy and fit I wanted to tell the world how good it was!’

3

Louisa started to go swimming every morning. She stopped buying junk food and started eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. She learnt to cook and made healthy meals of grilled  fish and vegetables for herself and her family.

4

Louise says, ‘I feel and look so much better now. I never get headaches or sore throats now and everyone says I look great! It wasn’t difficult to change my life. It’s not hard to live a healthy life – you don’t need a lot of money. But you do need to want to change!’

5

What advice does Louisa have for teenagers who want to change their lifestyles? Louisa says teenagers shouldn’t try to change their lives li ves too quickly. ‘Start small,’ she says. ‘You mustn’t do too much or you will just j ust feel worse. No. Simon’s the boy who’s really good at chess.

Speaker:

Jane:

Well, he was walking his dog near my house when the dog ran away. He ran after his dog but she was running very fast.

Speaker:

Did he find her?

Jane:

His dog ran into the park which is near the school. Simon looked for a long time, and he was starting to leave the park when he saw his dog. His dog was carrying a very old and dirty necklace in her mouth.

Speaker:

Ew, yuk!

Jane:

Yes, but it was a really old necklace! He took it to his teacher. It’s worth millions of pounds!

Welcome to Music Moments. I’m very happy to welcome a very special guest to our show today: Nora Cole! Hello Nora.

Nora:

Hi, Don.

Don:

Now, you’ve won the Popstar  talent  talent show, you’ve played twenty fantastic concerts. Now you’re performing and meeting your fans. How does it feel?

Nora:

It feels great, Don. I can’t believe that just ten months ago I was wearing a school uniform and living with my family. Now I’m famous! I feel very lucky!

Don:

But you’ve always loved music, haven’t you?

Nora:

I’ve loved music since I was three. My Dad says I could sing before I could speak! I’ve sung at school shows for ten years.

Don:

But singing for hundreds of fans must be a bit different!

Nora:

Yes it is. I’ve watched that talent show since I was ten years old! I suppose I just felt very happy on the stage.

Don:

The judges could see you were very relaxed.

Nora:
