Gochara...

Description

Gochara: Transits to Natal Moon Gochara is a Sanskrit word that means ‘movement of globes’. Go = Globe or Ball and Chara = movement. Gochara is simply transits of the planets from the Moon’s natal position. Gochara is the most commonly used transit technique in India. Family Astrologers use this technique all the time. They will ask only for your Moon sign and since they will have the current position of the planets memorized, they will then give you a reading based solely on the Moon’s position. The transiting planet is affected by its position from the Moon. Its general indications and the things ruled by its lordship of houses, are favorably or unfavorably affected by the planet’s position from the Moon. The house the planet occupies from the Moon is not affected. The Moon represents growth and one’s mind. If the planet is favorably affected by its position from the Moon, then it can grow its significations. If the planet is in an unfavorable position, then the opposite is true. It must be mentioned here that Gochara should be used in conjunction with Ashtakavarga. Ashtakavarga takes into consideration the strength of the planet in question by its position from all of the planets and the Ascendant, not just from the Moon alone. Thus, a planet that is weak because of its transit position from the Moon, may be transiting a house that has high Ashtakavarga points and be able to produce quite significant results. Saturn’s transit from the Moon is the most important because Saturn is the one planet that gives long term effects and puts into motion those events of life that will have the strongest karmic effects. Saturn is Time and long term, life changing karma. Sade Sati is a much feared time in a person’s life. This is when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon. During this time, Saturn cannot create long term effects. Saturn creates life changing, long term effects like marriage or major career changes when transiting beneficial houses from the natal Moon. When transiting unfavorable houses from the Moon, Saturn cannot give strong, long term implications. If the Ashtakavarga points for a certain house are high, however, Saturn’s transit to a house with high Ashtakavarga points will contradict this. According to Parasara and in the vein of common sense, Ashtakavarga trumps Gochara because it is a lot more specific to the individual and Ashtakavarga measures a planet’s transit from every other planet, not just the Moon. However, Gochara is an excellent tool for predicting simple things and the ebb and flow of everyday life. It is best to focus on Gochara with the current running dasa. Look for the dasa lord and its transit from the Moon. If the dasa lord is in an unfavorable position from the Moon, this is when the planet will cause problems in the person’s life if problems are indicated by the dasa lord. If the dasa is promising great effects, then the planet will give its best effects when it is transiting a beneficial house from the Moon. An average dasa has a combination of things to give. In good houses from the Moon, the dasa lord will give good effects, in bad houses from Moon, then undesirable effects. The transiting Moon in houses from the natal Moon will show the attitude a person has on any given day. It is ideal to have the Moon in a good position from the natal Moon for daily events to run smoothly. In regards to particular areas of life, like relationships, career, wealth and so on, assess if the lord of the house and karaka of the thing in question are in a good house from the Moon. For example, if you are buying a new car, it is ideal to have Venus and the 4th lord in a beneficial house from the natal Moon. Sun transiting unfavorable houses from Moon will harm the person’s ability to achieve status. Mars transiting unfavorable houses from Moon will give frustrating experiences from opponents and fighting battles. Saturn will make achieving destiny difficult. Jupiter is another important planet of destiny and long term goals, second only to Saturn. When Jupiter transits a favorable house from the Moon, the things that you believe you should become are the things fate dictates that you become. As a karaka, it rules our dharma and how easily that dharma unfolds. Jupiter shows how readily we will find answers to life’s

questions. Jupiter is the higher knowledge we use to navigate our life towards where we want it to go. Mercury shows how well we play the game, relations with our friends and our business prospects. Vedha means an obstruction. Planets can be obstructed by other planets while transiting houses from the Moon. A table at the end of this article will show when Vedha applies. An important point to remember with Vedha is that planets that have familial relationships, in other words, if they are parent and child, they will never obstruct each other. For example, Saturn is the son of the Sun, so Saturn and the Sun will never obstruct each other. Mercury is the son of the Moon, so the Moon and Mercury will never obstruct each other. Vipareet vedha means if a planet is in a house where it gives bad effects, then another planet obstructing it will nullify its bad effects. For example, you want to know about your wealth. Jupiter is the karaka of wealth and the 2nd lord is the rules the house of wealth. When both of these planets are in good houses from the Moon, then money comes more easily and readily. It is even better if the transiting Moon is also in a favorable house from the natal Moon. Assess the karaka, house lord and Moon. When they are all in good positions from the natal Moon, then you can predict that those things pertaining to their specific meanings will run smoothly. If they are all in unfavorable positions, then there will be more stress and problems with that area of life. Gochara is not the complete picture. It only shows the energy that a planet has to grow its significations. It may not give you energy to make good decisions, or overcome problems, or be able to learn from experiences. The following is a list of favorable and unfavorable houses of planets’ transits to the natal Moon. Vedha is also included.
