Installation support
■
Carefully read the release notes and this installation guide.
■
Ensure that all the Requirements for GNSS Spider software are fulfilled.
■
Make sure that other components of your system are regularly updated and sufficiently in advance, prior to the GNSS Spider software upgrade. Please refer to the notice in step 5 of section 9.
■
If applicable, make sure you have read and understood the “Special Installation Advice for Updates from V2.1.x (or earlier) to V2.2.0 (or later)” contained in this installation guide below.
■
Please read the section “Compatibility notices related to other Leica software”.
■
Ensure that all users of your reference station services are informed in advance about the system maintenance. Advise them about the maintenance period and that GNSS Spider services might temporarily be unavailable and must not be used during this period, until further notification.
■
When using the GNSS Spider RT-Rover user management / Spider Business Center, then for updates from V3.2.6 (or earlier) to v4.0.0 (or later) please first review the GNSS Spider SBC Migration guide that is provided with the installation media.
■
Directly before starting the installation, make sure that no RT-users are connected. Applications using the output of GNSS Spider Positioning or Post-Processing should be stopped or should be able to handle possible data interruptions.
Please note the following advice after you have made any modifications to your GNSS Spider installation. ■
Ensure that all GNSS Spider services are properly configured and running.
■
Verify that Real-Time, Positioning and Post-Processing Services are providing the expected data and accuracy. Field tests for RTK are recommended.
■
Notify all users of your reference station network products about all relevant configuration changes, e.g. that from GPS Spider V2.2.0 onwards RT-Product services use either Null Antenna or ABSOLUTE antenna calibrations (depends on your individual configuration).
Installation of GNSS Spider for a single reference station is quite straightforward. With just a few mouse clicks, your installation is operational. However a complete GNSS network installation with receiver control, data archiving, network processing and RTK data transmission service distributed over multiple computers, that are

2. Special Installation Advice for Updates from V2.1.x (or earlier) to V2.2.0 (or later) When updating your GNSS/GPS Spider installation from V2.1.x or earlier to V2.2.0 or later, then please note the following important improvements that will require the operators’ special attention after the installation: ■ The support of Null Antenna in RT-Products requires all GNSS antenna offset and PCV calibration data to be ABSOLUTE calibration values. See following section “Use of Null Antenna & Need for ABSOLUTE antenna calibration” for more detail. ■
Use of Null Antenna & Need for ABSOLUTE antenna calibration
Positioning post-processing products do support configurable logging paths that require correct manual configuration after the software installation to prevent loss of data. See the following section “Positioning post-processing products – reconfigure logging path” for more detail.
From GPS Spider V2.2.0 onwards the use of the so-called “Null Antenna” is supported. The use of ABSOLUTE antenna calibration data is required for this new GPS Spider V2.2.0 RT-products feature “Send Null-Antenna”. It allows supplying real time correction data that is consistently transformed to the ARP (Antenna Reference Point) for all stations in a network, by applying the absolute antenna PCV. This removes the need for any rover system that connects to a GNSS Spider RT-Product knowing the original antenna type of each reference station. Instead the rover system can simply always use the so-called “Null Antenna” definition (also known as “ADVNULLANTENNA” or “GPPNULLANTENNA”) as defined by the reference antenna type. The “ADVNULLANTENNA” is a default antenna type available on all Leica Geosystems GPS500 and GPS1200 GNSS field-surveying systems. It is also supported on most other GNSS surveying system brands. Optionally, the “Null Antenna” feature can be used with every GNSS Spider RT-Product of Type = Single Site (except those with message type “original raw data”) within GNSS Spider on both the Site Server as well as the Network RT-Proxy Server. The “Null-Antenna” feature is used with every GNSS Spider RTProduct on the Network RT-Proxy Server of the following types: • “Nearest Site” • “Single Cell” • “Automatic Cell”
Page 9 02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
Note: After the installation of GNSS Spider V3.0.0 over any version 2.1 (or earlier) all existing RT-Products (except those with message type = “original raw data”) will automatically be modified to supply real time corrections based on the “Null Antenna”. Please check for all your Single Site products if this is desired and modify them if necessary. Thus all antenna calibration data used in GPS Spider from version 2.2.0 onwards MUST contain ABSOLUTE calibration values. This also includes any GNSS Spider V3.0 or later. Therefore please read the following advice carefully: ■
RELATIVE Calibration values for all default Leica antennas will be automatically replaced with ABSOLUTE calibrations during this installation.
■
All user-defined antennas in the GNSS Spider antenna management must also have ABSOLUTE calibrations.
■
User-defined antennas cannot be automatically updated during the installation!
■
It is the GNSS Spider network operators’ responsibility to ensure that all user-defined antennas contain only ABSOLUTE calibration values.
■
Failure to provide ABSOLUTE calibrations for all user defined antennas, will lead to biases in the real-time correction information transmitted by GNSS Spider and subsequently to biases in the rover positioning.
■
Mixing of antenna calibration data from different sources for different sites is not recommended! Therefore when using nonLeica antenna calibration values for some sites in the Network, it is recommended to also use calibration data from the same source for all Leica antennas in the network, instead of using the Leica default values
■
If you already have been using ABSOLUTE type-mean or individual calibration data in your GNSS Spider installation, then you will not need to modify the antenna configuration. Otherwise please refer to the section “Recommended procedure to update antenna information in GNSS Spider“ below.
During the GNSS Spider installation of a version V3.0 (or later) over an existing V2.1.x (or earlier) you will have to confirm that you have read and understood the above advice.

Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
For more details on GNSS Spider Antenna Management, the import of user-defined antennas, the update of existing antennas and the use of the “Null Antenna” in RT-Products, please refer to section “Antenna Management in GNSS Spider” below. Note: Leica Geosystems strongly recommends verifying all reference station coordinates whenever the applied antenna calibration data is modified, as could be the case after the update from earlier versions of GPS Spider to V2.2 (or later)! Further please ensure your entire Network users are advised about the changes to the real time products and that they must use the “NullAntenna” as reference antenna definition for all products where this is now configured!
Positioning postprocessing productsreconfigure logging path
Within GNSS Spider Post-Processing products, it is now possible to individually configure the logging paths for the position log files. For all existing Post-Processing products it is mandatory after the update to GPS Spider V2.2 or later, to manually re-configure the logging path. This is required to ensure Post-Processing results will be written to files as desired. A file clean-up period can also be configured!

3. Compatibility notices related to other Leica software GeoMoS compatibility
For using Leica GNSS Spider V4.0.0 (or later) in monitoring applications with Spider Positioning and Leica GeoMoS, at least GeoMoS version 5.1 or newer is required. The GNSS Spider RT-Positioning output to GeoMoS is not backwards compatible with older versions of GeoMoS. Note: Please do not attempt to upgrade to GNSS Spider V4.0.0 for a combined application with GeoMoS unless you do also upgrade to at least GeoMoS V5.1. Otherwise your system will not continue to operate.
Note: When installing GeoMoS and GNSS Spider on the same computer, the GNSS Spider software must be installed FIRST to ensure a correct SQL server configuration. 2
SpiderWeb compatibility
For using Leica GNSS Spider V4.0.0 (or later) with Leica SpiderWeb Virtual RINEX at least SpiderWeb version 4.0 or newer is required. The GNSS Spider SpiderNet network correction archive files are not backwards compatible with older versions of SpiderWeb. Note: Please do not attempt to upgrade to GNSS Spider V4.0.0 for a combined application with SpiderWeb Virtual RINEX unless you do also upgrade SpiderWeb to at least version 4.0. Otherwise your system will not continue to operate as expected. Please contact Leica Geosystems support for assistance if you require to combine GNSS Spider v4.0 with SpiderWeb v2.2.
2
Leica GNSS Spider needs the TCP/IP protocol to communicate with Microsoft SQL Server (see SQL Server configuration Manger, "SQL Native Client Configuration" and "SQL Server Network configuration" -> Protocols / Client Protocols). GNSS Spider always activates TCP/IP protocol for Microsoft SQL Server when it installs the database server. In case the SQL server is already installed on the system and if GNSS Spider does not work after a installation, it is possible that TCP/IP protocol is disabled (this can happen for example if you installed Leica GeoMos before). Thus, it is recommended to install Leica GNSS Spider before Leica GeoMos if both softwares shall run on the same computer. Page 12

4. Requirements for GNSS Spider software Software protection
The Leica GNSS Spider software requires a software protection key (dongle) to enable and use the protected software options. ■ No key (dongle) protection is required for GNSS Spider site server for all manual reference station operations. ■ No key (dongle) protection is required for GNSS Spider client user interface. ■ A software protection key (dongle) and a valid software CCP license key are required for GNSS Spider protected server options. ■ A software protection key (dongle) needs to be installed only on computers where a GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server is installed. The driver for the SW protection key (hardware dongle) will be installed automatically. Should this fail for any reason, please manually install the driver. You will find the installation files for the software protection key driver on the installation media under the directory ”\Software\Dongle\..”. Note: The software protection key (dongle) does not need to be connected to your computer during the installation procedure. An USB-type software protection key must not be connected during the installation procedure while dongle drivers are being installed. You will only be prompted to remove the USB dongle if the drivers are going to be installed. Upgrading your software protection key: Should you purchase a new option for an existing license you will receive an upgrade executable file that you need to run on the computer where the dongle is attached. After the upgrade has been executed successfully, the GNSS Spider servers (Site Server and / or Network Server) must be restarted, in order to recognize the new options that have been loaded to the dongle. Alternatively you can click the [Refresh] button in the “Purchased options” dialog for the Site server and/or Network server.
Page 13

Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
CCP license key
Please ensure you have a valid software CCP license key with an expiry date beyond the release date of GNSS Spider version that you are going to install. A software CCP license key is always linked to a software protection key (dongle). If no valid CCP license key can be found on the computer during the installation or if you install GNSS Spider for the first time, a valid software CCP license key must be entered to be able to complete the installation. Installing GNSS Spider without a valid CCP license key will cause all dongle protected options to be disabled. Do not update an existing previous version of GNSS Spider, unless you are confident that you do not need a new software CCP license key or unless you have received a valid software CCP license key for your dongle. Otherwise your system might not continue to operate with any of the protected options. The CCP license key only needs to be registered once during the installation on one computer. After registering your GNSS Spider software CCP license, all new versions of GNSS Spider, which will be released before the expiry date of your license, can be downloaded from the Leica Geosystems web site free of charge and can be installed and executed using the registered license key. Within GNSS Spider you can check the expiry date of your CCP license in the Purchased Options dialog accessible from the About Box. If you are in doubt about the required software CCP license key, then please contact your local Leica Geosystems representative before starting the software installation. CCP license key for DONGLE FREE operation: In case you want to install GNSS Spider for only using the unprotected (dongle free) functionality a dongle specific license key is not required. In this case type the text “DONGLEFREE” into the license key entry field to proceed with the installation. CCP license key for operation with Leica DEMONSTRATION license: In case you want to install GNSS Spider for a Leica Geosystems demonstration license (demo dongle) a dongle specific license key is not required. In this case type the text “DEMOVERSION” into the license key entry field to proceed with the installation.

5. Software Installation Preparation
Before starting the Installation program, it is recommended that you carefully read these installation notes. Section 10 and onwards provide a general introduction into the software functionality and system architecture, and will help you to decide which set-up type to select during the installation process. Please also see the ”What’s New” release notes for GNSS Spider on the installation media for latest changes and additions to the software. You can open these from within the DVD browser directly or find them on the DVD within the “\Documentation\...” folder. Note: To successfully perform the installation of GNSS Spider on your computer you need to be logged on as Windows™ System Administrator. Also be aware that the current Windows user, under which the installation is performed, is automatically added to the “Spider Administrators” User Group in Windows User Management. To learn more about the “Spider Administrators” User Group, refer to section 11 sub-section “GNSS Spider Client access levels”. For remote access security we recommend to perform the installation under a unique user account with administrative privileges, thus not using the default Windows administrator user account “Administrator”. Alternatively, use the Windows User Management to properly manage the members of the „Spider Administrators“ user group. Both GNSS Spider and Microsoft™ SQL Server need to open IP ports on your computer. An active software firewall installation may prevent the successful installation or operation of GNSS Spider. The personal firewall integrated within Windows XP, is reconfigured automatically by GNSS Spider during installation. Any other firewall must be reconfigured manually. A simple method is to remove any active firewall from the system prior to the GNSS Spider installation and then reinstall the firewall afterwards. The following IP ports are utilized by GNSS Spider and must be open in the firewall on the computer: • Leica GNSS Spider (Data Dispatcher): - Site Server IP port = 9877 - Cluster Server IP port = 9882 (, 9883, 9884, ...) 5 - Network Server IP port = 9879 - RTK Proxy Server IP port = 9880 • Spider Business Center: - SBC Central Server IP port = none - SBC Proxy Server IP port = 8021 - SBC Web Portal IP port = 80 (web server port) • SQL/MSDE: IP port = 1433 If the GNSS Spider server is installed in a corporate network with public internet access, we recommend installing a professional hardware firewall to properly protect your reference station servers from unwanted access. Please also refer to Section 12 Security

Destination folder for program files: Default = C:\\Leica Geosystems\GNSS Spider
Select the Installation Type
The installation program offers different installation types. Select the appropriate type and follow the subsequent installation steps. To find out which installation type is most appropriate, you should know which GNSS Spider optional modules you have purchased and whether these are part of the GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server. Furthermore you should be clear about which GNSS Spider modules you intend to set-up together in parallel on one computer and which ones you prefer to install on separate computers. For updating distributed systems please refer to section “Recommended procedure for updating distributed systems” below. Please refer to the corresponding section of the Leica “Equipment list for GNSS Networks and Reference Stations” to find out which purchasable options belong to which server type. Refer to Section 11 of this document to learn about GNSS Spider software features and architecture. Here is a brief description of the different installation types. ■
Site Server Installation (DEFAULT) Use this option to install all GNSS Spider GUI Client and Site

Server related components including the local SQL database which, when populated, contains all the information required to manage one or multiple reference station receivers. This installation type installs all modules required for receiver control, raw data archiving, simple RTK distribution (not the RTK Proxy Server) and Positioning. ■
Full GNSS Spider Installation Use this option to install all GNSS Spider components onto a single computer, including all the required modules for all options of the GUI Client, Site Server, SpiderNET Network, Cluster & RTK-Proxy Server and Spider Business Center servers, including the local SQL database for all GNSS Spider servers. This installation type is typically suitable for small networks, where a single high performance computer shall handle all reference station tasks, such as receiver control, raw data archiving, network computation and RTK data distribution.
■
Cluster Server Installation This option installs a cluster service. This option is necessary in case you want to have your cluster server on a different machine to your network server.
■
Network Server Installation This option installs the network server which manages the network configuration. Also the GUI client application will be installed.
■
RTK Proxy Server Installation This option installs the data distribution service which handles the distribution of real-time data to outside data recipients. This service will typically be installed on a computer outside the firewall.
■
Spider Business Center Central Server This option installs the SBC Central Server which contains the backend part of the Spider Business Center.
■
Spider Business Center Proxy Server This option installs the SBC Proxy Server which contains all components of the Spider Business Center for the web access. This component is usually installed in the DMZ.
■
Stand alone GNSS Spider Remote GUI Client Installation Use this option to install all GNSS Spider user interface related components. This installation type is suitable for computers that
Page 23

shall only be used to remotely access existing GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server installations. Note, the GNSS Spider GUI Client is automatically installed, when installing the GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server, and it can always be used to access existing remote GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server installations. Remember that the GNSS Spider client can be used to control a remote GNSS Spider server; however it is the server, not the client, that establishes communication to the GNSS receivers and performs the processing and data distribution. Therefore, the platform on which the server is installed is normally deployed at a permanent location where dedicated dial-up modems and/or network connections provide individual links to the reference stations. All that is required for the client to connect to the Server is a single dial-up line or a network link. ■
Advanced GNSS Spider Installation Use this option to install a single GNSS Spider component or your individual combination of GNSS Spider components. Installation of individual GNSS Spider components is particularly useful if you want to distribute some of the GNSS Spider operations over different PCs that are connected in a computer network. Please note that for a distributed installation the Spider Business Center should be installed and running before installing the GNSS Spider Network Server. And the Network Server should be already installed and running, before a Cluster Server or RTK Proxy Server is installed on a remote computer.
If you are still unsure about which installation is best suited for your set-up please carefully read the sections 10, 11, and 12 in this document. When you have purchased a Customer Care Package contract you can also request assistance from our Support through your nearest Leica Geosystems sales representative or distribution partner.
Microsoft IIS installation check
If you selected “Full GNSS Spider Installation”, “SBC Proxy Server installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation” including the SBC Proxy Server the setup will check if the Microsoft® Internet Information Service (IIS) is installed on the system. A proper installation of IIS is a prerequisite of the SBC Proxy Server installation. See “Web server service requirements” for more details. If IIS is not installed or the setup could not detect the IIS installation or configuration the following dialog will be shown 6:

Microsoft™ SQL Server
GNSS Spider software requires a Microsoft® SQL Server version to be installed on your system. For a list of supported Microsoft SQL Server versions please refer to section 4 “Requirements for GNSS Spider software” sub-section above in this document. The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express™ is included on the full installation media (i.e. not within the compact web download) and will be installed automatically, if the installation program finds no installed Microsoft SQL server.
Older versions of MS SQL Server
If you are already running a version of Microsoft™ SQL server older than version SQL Server 2005, you must update this version manually before you can install GNSS Spider. If you do not need your older version of the SQL Server any more, then you should un-install it before installing GNSS Spider. First make sure no other programs that are using the SQL server, are still running on your system. Un-installation of your SQL server may cause loss of data needed by other applications. Please check with your system administrator if you are unsure about this.
SQL Server 2005 Express Installation with GNSS Spider
When installing the SQL Server 2005 Express, you will be prompted for the SQL server System Administrator (sa) password. This is not your Windows User password. You should choose a new and secure password for the SQL Server System Administrator (sa). After you have entered the password and confirmed it, then the SQL Server 2005 Express will be installed. After successful SQL Server 2005 Express installation your system needs to be rebooted, before you can proceed with the GNSS Spider installation. This will typically happen automatically, but may fail on some Windows systems. If so, then please reboot the computer manually. Note: Be sure you remember your SQL Server System Administrator (sa) password. You will be prompted for this again during the remainder of the GNSS Spider installation. You may also need this in the future when you install new versions of the GNSS Spider software and have removed the GNSS Spider database earlier. If GNSS Spider installation finds an existing SQL database for GNSS Spider, it can use this automatically and does not need to ask for the System Administrator (sa) password.

Site server password
This step is only performed if you selected “Site Server Installation” or “Full GNSS Spider Installation” type. The GNSS Spider Site Server access with local or remote user interface clients or from a Network Server is protected by a password. Please enter and confirm a unique password that will be required by clients to access this Site Server. This password should be different from your user account and SQL system administrator passwords.
Network Server password
This step is only performed if you selected “Full GNSS Spider Installation”, “Network Server Installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation” including the Network Server. The GNSS Spider Network Server access with local or remote user interface clients is protected by a password. Please enter and confirm a unique password that will be required by clients to access this Network Server. This password should be different from your user account and SQL system administrator passwords.
Spider Business Center Proxy Server password
This step is only performed if you selected “Full GNSS Spider Installation”, “SBC Proxy Server installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation” including the SBC Proxy Server.
Enter Spider Business Center Proxy Server connection
This step is only performed if you selected “Network Server installation”, “SBC Central Server installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation” including the Network Server and/or the SBC Central Server.
Add Cluster Server to GNSS Spider Network
This step is only performed if you selected “Cluster Server Installation”.
Page 27
The Spider Business Center Server access with a local or remote Network server is protected by a password. Please enter and confirm a unique password that will be required by server clients to access this SBC Proxy Server. This password should be different from your user account and SQL system administrator passwords.
Enter the hostname or IP address and SBC Proxy Server password of the SBC Proxy Server you want to connect to.
Please enter the computer name or IP address of the computer where the Network Server is installed. Then enter the server password of that Network Server. A Cluster Server must be assigned to a GNSS Spider Network Server. Make sure the Network Server is already installed and an operational network connection to the Network Server computer is available. The Cluster Server will then be automatically assigned to the Network Server. Should this fail, you need to un-install the Cluster Server and 02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
re-install it again once an operational network connection is available.
Add a RTK Proxy Server to GNSS Spider Network
This step is only performed if you selected “RTK Proxy Server Installation”. Enter the server password of the Network Server to which this RTK Proxy Server shall be assigned. In contrast to the Cluster Server, when installing the RTK Proxy Server only, the RTK Proxy Server must be assigned manually to the Network Server. Therefore during this installation step only the password of the Network Server must be provided. The computer name or TCP/IP address is not required. This is because the RTK Proxy Server typically is installed on a computer that is separated by a firewall from the Network Server. Thus an automatically assigning connection cannot be established from the RTK Proxy Server to the Network Server, like it is the case with the Cluster Server. To manually assign the RTK Proxy Server to a Network Server after successful installation, open the Network Server GUI; open the dialog Configuration from the Tools menu. On the General tab you can then enter the computer name or TCP/IP address of the RTK Proxy Server.
Destination folder for IIS based web components
This step is only performed if you selected “Full GNSS Spider Installation”, “SBC Proxy Server installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation” including an SBC Proxy Server. The Spider Business Center web components will be copied in this folder. You can accept the default or select your preferred program files destination directory using the browse button: •
Destination folder for SBC files: Default = C:\inetpub\wwwroot\SBC
Data destination folders
This step is only performed if you selected “Site Server Installation”, “Full GNSS Spider Installation” or “Advanced GNSS Spider Installation – Site or Network Server” type. The GNSS Spider Server(s) uses a default root path for all data product files. You can specify this default by selection of your preferred data destination folder. To select a different folder use the browse button: • Folder for the GNSS data products: Default = C:\GNSS Spider\Data TEMP data destination folder: Within the given GNSS data destination folder, during the installation GNSS Spider creates also the temporary files folder e.g. “C:\GNSS
Page 28
02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
Spider\Data\Temp”. This directory is used as temporary location for raw data, other files that are downloaded from the GNSS receiver or the Internet and any other temporary data files required for the running server application. After e.g. successful download and completion of all products defined within GNSS Spider, the temporary files will be automatically removed by the software. In case that only Cluster, RTK Proxy or SBC Proxy Server are being installed, the data destination folder is not asked for during the installation. Thus the installation creates the temp folder using the default structure “C:\GNSS Spider\Data\Temp”.
Completing the Installation
After providing all the above information, the Set-up Wizard is now ready to install GNSS Spider program files on your system. Please check in the summary dialog all settings and then click [Next>]. GNSS Spider installer will then start copying files. Once all files are copied, the GNSS Spider services will be automatically started in the background. During the start of the GNSS Spider services they will initialize the SQL database. When this is successful, this is accompanied by a ring sound of increasing pitch. Should it fail you will hear a high frequency beep sound.
- Check that your volume is not muted.
In the Finish dialog, you then have the option to automatically start the GNSS Spider client user interface if this was part of the installation. Click Finish to complete the installation process.
Automatic DB backup
When updating a previous installation, the installation program will automatically perform a backup of your GNSS Spider server SQL databases into the default data directory. Note: From GNSS Spider 4.1 (and later) no message box does pop up to confirm the successful backup. Only possible problems will be reported.

6. Multiple Cluster Servers Operating multiple cluster servers on one computer
GNSS Spider supports the operation of multiple cluster servers on a single computer. This takes full advantage of modern multi-processor and/or multi-threading computer technology and its computation performance. High-speed single processor computers can also run multiple cluster servers. GNSS Spider does not restrict the number of cluster servers that can be installed on a single machine. Only the number and performance of available processors on a single computer limit the number of cluster servers that can be used. This allows processing of large networks on a single computer. In general we recommend to initially monitor the CPU load using the Windows performance monitor, when using a new computer and configuration of multiple clusters. Overall CPU load should typically not exceed 80% to allow some buffer for processing peaks.
Adding a Cluster Server on one computer
If during the installation the option to install a Cluster Server has been chosen (e.g. with “Full GNSS Spider Installation” or “Cluster Server installation” option), then by default a single Cluster Server is installed on a computer. This first Cluster Server is installed, as a service called "Spider Cluster Server 09882", where 09882 is the IP-port number on which the cluster server communicates with the Network Server. To add one or more additional cluster servers on this computer please proceed as follows: Step 1
2 3 4 5
Page 31
Action When the GNSS Spider installation has finished, open a Command Prompt (CMD) with administrator privileges and change to the directory where GNSS Spider is installed, e.g. "cd c:\Program Files\Leica Geosystems\GNSS Spider". To install a cluster server, run the following command from the command prompt: "ClusterServer.exe -install" This will install a new service called "Spider Cluster Server 09883" on your computer. Repeat steps 1-3 to install further cluster servers. Allow some seconds time in between each rerun. Verify with the SpiderTray that the Service has been installed and started (press the Refresh State button on the SpiderTray). The Spider Server Control window displays the Server name, Server state (started, stopped) and the Process ID.

After installing additional clusters you must update the connections to the cluster servers. Open GNSS Spider → open the Network Server → go to the Tools menu → select Configuration-General tab. Press the [Update Servers] button. A message will appear in the watch view indicating whether the connection was successful.
This procedure installs a service and writes the entries into the Database of the corresponding Network Server. The Cluster Server can then be added to network processing in the Net Config tab of the Network Server. Note: Make sure your system’s user account policies do not block this change of your system. If the installation fails, check the “Change User Account Control Settings” by typing “uac” into Start > Search and set to “Never notify” and try again. Page 32

Removing a Cluster Server on one computer
To remove a Cluster Server from a computer proceed as follows: Step Action 1 Open a command prompt and change to the directory where GNSS Spider is installed, e.g. "…\Program Files\Leica Geosystems\GNSS Spider". 2 To remove a single Cluster Server service, run the following command from the command prompt: "ClusterServer.exe -remove #portNumber" (e.g. with #portNumber = 9883 ). OR
To remove ALL the Cluster Server services at once, run the command "ClusterServer.exe -remove", without specifying a unique port number. ATTENTION: this will remove all the Cluster Server services, including the default "Spider Cluster Server 09882"!
Note: All cluster server services are removed when installing a new GNSS Spider version, due to the automatic un-install of the previous version. The default and any additional Cluster Server have to be installed once again for the new version as described above. Removing a cluster server only stops and removes the service; it doesn't remove the cluster configuration entries in the database of the Network Server. All Cluster Servers services running on the same computer are connected to the same Network Server. It's not possible to run several Cluster Servers on a single computer and connect them to different Network Servers.

7. Antenna Management in GNSS Spider This very important section introduces to you the Antenna Management component in GNSS Spider. It covers how to import and update antenna information and how to ensure that antenna information is properly applied in all GNSS Spider components after being updated. Note: From GPS Spider V2.2 onwards only ABSOLUTE antenna calibration data must be used in GNSS Spider. It is the network operators’ responsibility to ensure that user-defined antenna information in the GNSS Spider Antenna Management is consistently updated to meet this requirement!
Leica Default All antenna calibration data that is provided by default within the antennas Antenna Management component of GNSS Spider for the default Leica antenna types contain ABSOLUTE antenna phase centre offsets and PCV. The Leica default ABSOLUTE antenna calibration values are so-called “Type-Mean” calibrations that are based on a minimum of five – typically more – individual antenna calibrations executed and supplied by Geo++® GmbH. Note: When updating from earlier version of GPS Spider the previously used RELATIVE calibration values will be updated to these new ABSOLUTE calibration values. The GNSS Spider software setup will automatically perform this update to the GNSS Spider antenna database.
Page 34
02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
User-Defined When using a mixture of different antenna brands and models in the Antennas reference station network, (as some are not available in GNSS Spider as Leica Geosystems default type antenna), then it is the network operators responsibility to provide the required ABSOLUTE antenna calibration information. These can then be added as user-defined antennas to the GNSS Spider Antenna Management database. Please refer to the GNSS Spider on-line help documentation to learn how to manually add or import antenna calibration data. To obtain antenna calibration data for non-Leica Geosystems equipment the following options are recommended: (a) Use individual absolute antenna calibration data for each antenna in the network. Such individual antenna calibration service is supplied e.g. by Geo++® GmbH. (b) Use Geo++® GmbH type-mean absolute antenna calibration data for each non-Leica Geosystems antenna in the network. Type mean calibration data for non-Leica Geosystems default antenna can be obtained directly from Geo++® GmbH. (c) Use IGS published absolute antenna calibration models for all antennae in the network. For latest updates of the igs05_xxxx.atx file please refer to the IGS server under: http://igscb.jpl.nasa.gov/igscb/station/general/ (d) Use NGS published absolute antenna calibration models for all antennae in the network. For latest updates of this data please look on the NGS antenna calibration home page under: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/ANTCAL/images/ant_info.abs Note: Although theoretically absolute antenna calibration data is not correlated with a specific reference antenna model and thus all such calibration data should be well compatible, we recommend avoiding mixing calibration data from different sources, to prevent inconsistencies due to any remaining biases. Using above mentioned options (a) or (b) as source for calibration data of non-Leica type antenna should be well compatible to the GNSS Spider default antenna calibrations. Further it is strongly recommended to verify all reference station coordinates whenever changing the applied antenna calibration data.

Updating or Modifying User-Defined Antenna Calibration Data
Unlike GNSS Spider default antenna types, all user-defined antenna information can be modified or updated by the network operator. The following two options within the GNSS Spider Antenna Management are available: 1. Manually modify antenna settings using the Antenna properties dialog. This is only possible if the antenna is not assigned to any site. Assigned (used) antennas are indicated by the exclamation mark symbol “ ”. 2. Import new antenna information from an antenna file. During the import any new antenna contained in the file will be added. For each existing antenna you will be prompted to confirm overwrite of the antenna information. This function also allows overwriting data for antennas that are currently assigned to a site! Please remember again that it is not recommended to mix antenna calibration data from different sources. Note: Updating antenna calibration information for any antenna that is assigned to an active site requires all GNSS Spider Positioning, PostProcessing and Real-Time products, as well as SpiderNET network processing that are using this site to be reinitialized. This is required in order to ensure the updated information is correctly applied. Please refer to the following section for recommended steps ensuring all GNSS Spider products are being properly reinitialized.
Recommended procedure to update antenna information in GNSS Spider
Page 36
The following steps are the recommended procedure to update the antenna data e.g. from relative calibration to absolute calibration. Step 1
Action Ensure that all users of your reference station services are informed in advance about the system maintenance. Advice them about the maintenance period and that GNSS Spider services might temporarily not be available and must not be used during this period, until further notification.
2
Directly before starting the update, make sure that no RTusers are connected and Positioning/Post-Processing services are not in use.
3

Now all active RT-Products on both, the Site Server and Network Server, Positioning and Post-Processing products, as well as SpiderNET network processing that are using sites for which antenna information has been updated, must be re-initialized. To re-initialize the products they have to be de-activated and then activated again, and SpiderNET network processing has to be either reset or stopped and started. Note that the multiple-select function will help to make this fast and simple. Note: Alternatively it is also possible to use the GNSS Spider Server Control Manager (see section: GNSS Spider Server control above.) to stop and start the GNSS Spider Site and Network Servers. This will also re-initialize all services and processes using antenna calibration information. Ensure that all GNSS Spider services are now properly configured and running. Verify that Real-Time, Positioning and Post-Processing Services are providing the expected data and accuracy. Field tests for RTK are recommended. Notify all users of your reference station network products about all configuration changes they are concerned with, e.g. that from GPS Spider V2.2.0 onwards RT-Product services use either Null Antenna or ABSOLUTE antenna calibrations (depends on your individual configuration).
Note: When upgrading from any earlier version of GPS Spider (V2.1 or earlier) to GNSS Spider, the above steps are required for all userdefined antenna types with RELATIVE calibration, to be updated to ABSOLUTE calibration values.
Antenna Management onboard the GR10, GNSS1200 and GPS500 receivers
Page 37
When using GNSS Spider to configure a GR10, GNSS1200 or GPS500 receiver for internal data logging or direct RTK output from the receiver, please take additional notice of the following: ■ Receivers cannot reduce RTK corrections to the “Null Antenna”. Receiver generated RTK corrections will always be based on the antenna type and its related calibration values that are loaded onto the receiver. ■ For a Leica default antenna that is assigned to a site and uploaded to the receiver, by name recognition the receiver will select the appropriate Leica default antenna from its onboard database. The Leica default antennas that are pre-installed with the receiver firmware still contain RELATIVE calibration values. Therefore transmitted RTK data will be based on these RELATIVE calibration values! ■ For a new user-defined antenna that is assigned to a site and uploaded to the receiver it will be added to the receivers onboard database with its ABSOLUTE calibration values, if a user-defined antenna with the same name does not yet exist in the receiver onboard antenna database. 02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
■
For an existing user-defined antenna that does already exist in the receiver onboard antenna database with the same name the onboard loaded calibration values will not be overwritten with the ones defined in GNSS Spider. The already onboard loaded antenna with its associated calibration values will be used. ■ Receiver onboard antenna type and calibration data is logged into the Leica binary MDB raw data files. ■ Receiver onboard antenna type and calibration data is further used to compute the reference station coordinates that are transmitted for RTK using RTCM V2.1 format. Thus a rover that receives RTCM V2.1 must use exactly the same antenna calibration information as is used on the reference receiver. Newer RTCM versions and other RTK formats only or additionally transmit the coordinates of the ARP or ground marker, so that the rover must not necessarily apply exactly the same antenna calibration values, but only has to use the correct antenna types. The calibration values used on the rover for its locally attached antenna and the received reference station antenna must however be consistent (same source and same calibration type relative or absolute).

Trouble shooting on Windows 7 Operating Systems
Problem: Freeze of Spider application and possibly Windows system With Window 7 operating system in combination with specific graphic card types it may occur that the Spider application and even the complete operating system freezes when changing displayed time period on Site server Raw Data Status page (mouse and keyboard don't react anymore). This issue can be caused by a problem in the driver of the graphics card. The number of elements to be shown by Spider suddenly goes up and thus the PC freezes. This has been seen on Windows 7 (32 bit) with Nvidia Quadro NVS 290, driver version 8.15.11.8593 / 14.05.2009 . Solution: Download the latest driver of the graphic card. Note: Windows claims that the driver is already up-to-date. Nevertheless, downloading and installing the latest graphics driver fixed the problem in the monitored cases.

Trouble shooting using CISCO VPN Client and Leica GNSS Spider on same computer
When using a CISCO VPN client and Leica GNSS Spider on the same computer, CISCO VPN client V5.0 or higher is recommended to be used. We have observed undesired behavior of Leica GNSS Spider SpiderNET network processing when a CISCO VPN client version 4.8.01.0300 is actively running on the same computer. It appears that in case where there is an established VPN connection, legal floating point operations in applications sometimes return invalid values. For GNSS Spider this then may result in a crash or freeze of the Cluster server. We have clear indications that the behavior applies to any application that performs certain numeric operations and is clearly neither caused by nor limited to GNSS Spider software. This behavior has been observed with CISCO VPN client version 4.8.01.0300 and might well also apply to earlier versions. The behavior could not be observed when using CISCO VPN client version 5.0.04.300. We expect that any CISCO VPN client V5.0 or higher should be ok to be used and not cause the above mentioned behavior, and therefore recommend using this version if needed. Should any problem remain, please contact your nearest local Leica Geosystems representative for support.

9. Recommended procedure for updating distributed systems Update distibuted systems
The GNSS Spider installation is designed in a way that allows the operator to install the software without following a certain upgrade sequence. However, even though it is possible to install the services in any order, for large, distributed installations it is recommended to follow a defined upgrade procedure. This will help avoid mistakes and keep the downtime of the system to a minimum. For a distributed installation (e.g. 1 Site Server [SS], 1 Network Server (e.g. combined with SBC Central Server) [NWS], 1 Cluster Server [CS] with 2 sub-clusters [c1, c2], 1 RTK Proxy Server [RTKS] (e.g. combined with SBC Proxy Server) spread over 4 or more computers), we recommend the following steps for a GNSS Spider system upgrade. Step 1.
2. 3. 4. 5.
6. 7.
Page 46
Action De-installation: Uninstall the RTK Proxy (and SBC Proxy) Server from the RTKS computer. Uninstall the Network (and SBC Central) Server from the NWS computer. Uninstall the Cluster Server from the CS computer. Uninstall the Site Server from the SS computer. Note: When all Spider server software is being upgraded, we do NOT recommend performing other maintenance tasks at the same time on those computers, e.g. installing Windows updates, updating the virus checker or other required updates, as this would impede the possibility to distinguish between problems caused by the Spider update and other changes. Windows security and driver updates (especially network adapter drivers) should be done regularly and independently from Spider updates. The recommended time difference between the Spider update and any other system change is two weeks. Furthermore, it is recommended that all server maintenance work is recorded in a dedicated log. Installation: Install the new version on the SS computer. Install the new version RTK & SBC Proxy Server on the RTKS computer.
8.
Install the Network Server, incl. one Cluster Server when these are on the same computer, and the SBC Central Server.
9.
Install the new version on the CS computer (c1 will be

installed automatically). 10. Add a second (and any further) cluster c2 on the CS computer via windows command line. For more information refer to the chapter “Multiple Custer Servers”. 11. Verification by the GNSS Spider operator: Check that all services are started on all computers (in the Spider Server Control). 12. Check that all servers are connected to each other (refer to the GNSS Spider watch view messages). 13. Check in the Raw Data History on the SS that all sites are connected successfully and are delivering data. 14. Check on the Network Server in the Site/Satellite Status View that all configured sites are delivering data for network processing. 15. Check on the Network Server in the Site/Satellite Status View that network processing is fixing. Use a rover or an Ntrip 7 client program, connect to the data stream and verify if data can be received (rover can fix the position). After performing the installation steps described above, the new GNSS Spider Installation is online and running. If the GNSS Spider installation contains multiple Site Servers or multiple Cluster Servers, it is necessary to repeat the corresponding installation and verification steps after the installation the first instance of this server.

10. An overview of GNSS Spider Overview
GNSS Spider runs on Microsoft Windows operating systems as outlined in Section 4 “Requirements for GNSS Spider software” above. It features an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) whose components are designed to interact seamlessly with standard Windows operating system procedures. The software can be easily configured to establish permanent or temporary connections to local and remote GNSS receivers either separately or simultaneously. The type of connection will depend on the communication infrastructure available at the installation. GNSS Spider is a modular package of server components allowing a central or distributed installation of the servers.
Operation automation
The local application of each GNSS Spider server runs as a standard Windows service, which is launched automatically when Windows is started and, therefore once all components have been properly configured, user intervention is not necessary. The GNSS Spider Site server can establish connection to the receiver automatically. Continuous open communication lines are not required, although this is supported as well and required for all real-time applications such as real-time positioning or network computations for Network RTK.
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider GUI Client application allows full control of a remote GUI Client Spider server through an IP-based connection (dial-up or network link), thus relieving the operator from the necessity of being at the server console to manage the network of reference stations. Those who are already familiar with Windows will find the GNSS Spider GUI very easy to learn and use. However, prior knowledge of Windows is not required to quickly become proficient in using the GNSS Spider software. Comprehensive online help covering many details beyond the topics addressed in the Getting Started section is also available for additional information for all GNSS Spider components and functions.

11. GNSS Spider System Architecture & Operations Overview
The GNSS Spider software is a modular system with a client/server architecture that comprises the following distinct system components: ■ GNSS Spider Client ■ GNSS Spider Servers: Site Server Network Server Cluster Server RTK Proxy Server Spider Business Center (SBC) Servers: - SBC Central Server - SBC Proxy Server - SBC Web Application ■ GNSS Spider Database (Microsoft SQL Server database) ■ GNSS Spider Data dispatchers
The server/client network architecture of GNSS Spider clearly separates the graphical user interface component, from the service application that performs the actual reference station tasks.

Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider GUI Client is the graphical user interface (GUI), with – GUI Client typical Windows™ look and feel that allows the operator to configure and monitor the operation of the GNSS Spider Servers. It is always installed locally on the Site Server and Network Server computer and can also be installed on multiple other remote PCs or Notebooks. Regardless of the installation type – local or remote – the GNSS Spider GUI Client always provides identical functionality and look-andfeel. Any GNSS Spider GUI Client can be used to access other GNSS Spider server installations on the same computer network or at other remote locations, to which IP connections are available. This is a particularly useful tool in clustering applications for large networks where several GNSS Spider – Site Servers are configured to each manage a subset of the large network, or simply for remote maintenance and control of your installation. Access from a GNSS Spider GUI Client to the GNSS Spider Servers does require knowing the GNSS Spider Server access password that is set during the installation process and can be modified only through the locally installed GNSS Spider GUI Client. Multiple GNSS Spider GUI Clients can access a GNSS Spider server simultaneously, such that a local GUI Client can be open, whilst one or more remote GUI Client users connect, for example to inspect the system status. For more details refer to the Section 12 Security - “Remote GNSS Spider GUI Client access”.
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider Site Server performs all standard reference station – Site Server operations continuously and automatically: •
Controlling the receivers.
•
Downloading and/or streaming data.
•
Checking, converting, compacting, archiving and distributing data.
•
Monitoring the entire Site server system.
•
Performing POSITIONING computations.
It can be installed on the same computer as the Network Server, Cluster Server, RTK Proxy Server or SBC servers, but it can also be installed on a separate computer that is dedicated for the Site Server operations. It requires an SQL database be installed on the same computer.
Page 51

Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider Network Server performs all network related data – Network management and configuration tasks and as such forms the central Server component of SpiderNET. It can be installed on the same computer as a Site Server, Cluster Server. RTK Proxy Server or SBC Server, but can also be installed on a separate computer dedicated for the Network Server operations. It requires an SQL database be installed on the same computer. The Network Server provides the configurations for one or multiple Cluster Servers and one RTK Proxy server. It also manages the data streams from one or multiple Site Servers that are assigned to the Network Server for network computation. It further manages the data streaming from the Site Server(s) raw data to the Cluster Server(s) for network computation as well as the Site Server(s) raw data and Cluster Server(s) network correction data to the RTK Proxy server for the real-time data distribution to Rover users in the field. For rover user access management, authentication and authorization for RT-Product access, the Network Server connects to and communicates with the SBC server.
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider Cluster Server performs real-time computation of – Cluster network corrections and as such is the SpiderNET processor engine. Server It does not have a direct graphical user interface connection and is configured through the Network Server. It can be installed on the same computer as the Site Server, Network Server, RTK Proxy Server or SBC Server, but it can also be installed on a separate computer that is dedicated for the Cluster Server operation. It does not require an SQL database be installed on the same computer. Once it is configured and started by the Network Server, the Cluster Server receives the raw data directly from the Site Server(s), performs the required network computation tasks and streams out the network corrections back to the Network Server for further distribution. More than one Cluster Server can be assigned to a Network Server, which allows built-in redundancy for network processing and distributes the processing load over multiple core processors or computers for processing of larger networks.
GNSS Spider The RTK Proxy Server takes care of the secure real-time data – RTK Proxy distribution and as such is the SpiderNET interface to the rover users Server in the field. It does not have a direct graphical user interface connection for itself and is configured through the Network Server. It can be installed on the same computer as the Site Server, Network Server, RTK Proxy Server or SBC Server. It can also be installed on a separate computer that is dedicated for the Proxy Server operation and may also host the SBC Proxy Server, which is the recommended set-up. It does not require an SQL database be installed on the same computer. The RTK Proxy Server can be configured to provide single site real Page 52

time corrections computed directly from a raw data stream that is received from individual sites of a Site Server, as well as network corrections received from the Cluster Server(s). Both the single site data streams and the real-time network corrections are provided through the Network Server, which manages all the data streams and connections. The RTK Proxy interfaces with the communication media such as the Internet, serial modems or access routers. It also hosts the Ntrip 8 caster(s) and can act as an Ntrip Server. The RTK Proxy Server is designed such that it is ideally suited for a secure IT network installation, where connections from an Intranet to the Internet are secured with software and/or hardware firewalls creating a so-called DMZ (De-Militarized Zone). For more details refer to the Section 10 Security - “Distributed Installation with firewall security”.
GNSS Spider The Spider Business Center is an integrated secure solution for online – Business subscription and management of all GNSS network services. It Center (SBC) smoothly integrates GNSS Spider and SpiderWeb services and allows you to complement them with your own value adding benefits. The Spider Business Center web portal application provides you and your clients with tools to view, register and manage real time and postprocessing services. It is designed to monitor service usage, to enable exchange of data, to view online network and rover status and assist with support & accounting. The SBC consists of the following main components: SBC Central Server SBC Proxy Server SBC Web Portal Application Both, then GNSS Spider Network Server and SpiderWeb connect to the SBC. They submit their available product services to the SBC, where these can then be combined into product packages. Registered end users then can subscribe these packages or they can be assigned by administrators, who also authorize subscription requests. SBC Central Server
The SBC Central Server is the core SBC server component. It processes and manages all configuration, registration, access and authorization requests. It stores all related data within its exclusive SQL database installed on the same computer. It can be installed on the same computer as a Site Server, Network Server, Cluster Server. RTK Proxy Server or SBC Proxy Server, but can also be installed on a separate computer dedicated for the SBC Central Server operations. The configuration and operation of the SBC Central Server is realized

through the web portal application that is automatically installed with the SBC Proxy Server. SBC Proxy Server
The SBC Proxy Server is the IT interface component to the SBC Central Server. It takes care for secure communication between the SBC Central server and internet users, Network Server and SpiderWeb. It can be installed on the same computer as a Site Server, Network Server, Cluster Server, RTK Proxy Server or SBC Proxy Server, but can also be installed on a separate computer dedicated for the SBC Central Server operations. It does not require an SQL database be installed on the same computer. The SBC Proxy Server is designed such that it is ideally suited for a secure IT network installation, where connections from an Intranet to the Internet are secured with software and/or hardware firewalls creating a so-called DMZ (De-Militarized Zone). For more details refer to the Section 10 Security - “Distributed Installation with firewall security”.
SBC Web Portal Application
The SBC Web Portal application provides the graphical user interface (GUI) for the configuration and management functionality of the SBC. As a web service it can be accessed by standard web browsers such as the Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. It is always automatically installed with the SBC Proxy Server. It requires the Microsoft® Internet Information Service (IIS) Web Management (Script and Tools) to be installed and activated on the same computer.
GNSS Spider All components, the GNSS Spider Servers and the Clients, access the – SQL GNSS Spider SQL database (Microsoft SQL Server) to share system Database configuration and status information for site and receiver data, active connections, and data products. Note that the database does not include the archived GNSS data file products. The data file products are stored in a user-definable folder structure, which can be accessed independently using a standard file browser such as Windows Explorer, even when GNSS Spider is not running. Uninstalling GNSS Spider will not delete those product files and directories; neither will it delete the SQL databases.
GNSS Spider The GNSS Spider Data Dispatcher (DD) ensures the GNSS Spider Servers and all GNSS Spider clients that are connected to a server – Data are synchronized. This is realized by instant event distribution for Dispatcher each client or server action. Thus any changes made through one GNSS Spider client will be instantly available to other connected clients or the server itself. Page 54

The Data Dispatcher also takes care of the general communication and real-time raw data and network correction data distribution between the server components.
GNSS Spider – Client / Server Connectivity
GNSS Spider GNSS Spider supports two distinct access levels for a GUI client user – GUI Client connecting to a GNSS Spider server – Administrator and Viewer access access. levels Administrators: Administrators (e.g. system supervisors) have full control of GNSS Spider software and the receivers. They can start and stop the various operations, create and change configurations, set parameters and modes etc. Viewer Level: Other interested parties can be granted viewer-only rights. Viewers can inspect the operation of the software, configuration parameters, system and receiver status etc. Viewers can neither control a GNSS Spider server, nor modify its configuration or operation.

General data flow
The following diagrams show the general data flow for configuration and streaming data between GNSS receivers and the server components. The data flow is the same regardless whether all GNSS Spider are installed on one computer or distributed on different computers. GNSS Spider – Site Server only installation For a GNSS Spider Site Server only installation, the main data flow is from the receivers to the Site Server. From here, file products and real-time products can be provided to the end user, or data can be streamed into a SpiderNET installation for real-time network processing and advanced real-time distribution using the RTK Proxy Server.

GNSS Spider – RTK Network installation For a real-time network installation including GNSS SpiderNET, data from one or more Site Servers can be combined within SpiderNET, which consists of the Network Server, one or more Cluster Servers and the RTK Proxy Server. For user access management also the SBC servers are required. A small network consisting of 5-10 reference stations and serving only a few number of RTK users, all server components could also be installed on a single sufficiently high performance computer. The diagram shows the RTK Proxy Server as well as the SBC Proxy server / Web Portal being separated by a firewall from the other server components, which is a recommended set-up for best IT security.

Communications: phone / cellular / GSM / wireless, Internet etc.
Reliable communication is critical for GNSS reference stations and networks. GNSS Spider software polls the receivers and downloads data files; RTK and DGPS data are transmitted from reference stations to RTK and GIS rovers. For centralized real-time data distribution and network processing, raw data is required to be continuously streamed from the receivers and sent to the different server components. Note that the computer platform on which the GNSS Spider Site Server is installed does not need to be co-located with a permanent reference station receiver. Depending on the requirements and the available infrastructure, communication between GNSS Spider Site Server computer and the reference-station GNSS receivers can be by: •
Dial-up modem (landline/cellular/GSM/high-speed wireless);
•
Internet, local or wide area networks (TCP/IP, Ntrip),
•
Direct serial link (RS232)
Transmission of RTK and DGPS data directly from the receivers will usually be by radio or phone modem. Centralized transmission of RTK, DGPS or Network RTK can be done via radio or phone modem, modem access router or the Internet. System supervisors using the GNSS Spider GUI Client at remote locations will normally connect the to the GNSS Spider server by Internet, Intranet or dial-up RAS connections. Leica Geosystems can suggest the most suitable communication solutions for your applications and networks and provide full advice on ancillary equipment such as modems, device servers, routers etc.

Note: The GNSS Spider performance parameters given in the above table are guiding values and based on testing results using the recommended hardware, as stated in section 4 “Requirements for GNSS Spider software”. The actual maximum performance limitations therefore can still significantly vary (up or down) using different hardware platforms. Also continuous improvements of the GNSS Spider software will impact these guide values. Please contact your local Leica Geosystems representative or distribution partner for assistance to support your configuration and set-up.
Data file distribution
GNSS Spider will transmit raw data and RINEX files immediately when available or at specified time intervals to one or multiple FTP servers for easy access by the GNSS user community. Different files can be pushed to different FTP servers. With GNSS Spider you have full flexibility. For convenient and secure distribution of GNSS data sets from any network to individual users via the internet we recommend to use a web server application such as Leica SpiderWeb (http://www.leicageosystems.com/spiderweb).
Command line processing
With command line processing, you can launch an application or script. Users can be notified by e-mail that data is available, data files can be sent directly to users. Programs or scripts can be launched upon events such as communication failure or low disk space.
System monitoring and data control
GNSS Spider software checks the completeness and quality of all data downloaded or streamed from the reference-station receivers. It also monitors the various communication links and the operation of the entire system. Warnings are generated and e-mail messages can be sent to supervisors if any unexpected events occur. Event log files are created. GNSS Spider provides full information.

12. Security Overview
Generally a GNSS Spider installation does not cause any concern regarding your computers security. The notes in the following sections are intended to support the user for installations in corporate network infrastructure and to learn about how GNSS Spider configuration settings and software architecture help to achieve a highly secure installation set-up. In corporate networks with firewall security, depending on how you install and configure GNSS Spider and the selected components, several IP-ports must be opened in a firewall for a certain communication direction. The Section “Distributed installation in a corporate LAN” below should help to discuss required network settings with your IT administrator or manager. A summary of IP ports that are used by GNSS Spider and the Microsoft ® SQL Database was given in Section 5 above.
General Security Aspects
Any computer and software today is prone to be affected by external violations such as viruses, worms or hacking attacks. To prevent these, it is recommended to run appropriate software tools such as virus scanners and firewalls on your computer systems. These tools must always be kept up to date, the responsibility of your IT network personnel. Of specific concern related to GNSS Spider is the protection against unauthorized access to GNSS Spider operation and data in terms of:
Remote GNSS Spider GUI Client access control
Remote user interface access at Spider Administrator level.
Logged data files (GNSS raw data, event logs, RTK Rover user logs).
Real time GNSS data streams. RTK rover account information.
GNSS Spider control and configuration is only allowed for users who are member of the Windows™ user group “Spider Administrators”. Any other user connection will have viewer rights only. Thus you should carefully manage the members of the “Spider Administrators” group. Please refer to the online help to learn more about this user group for GNSS Spider. In case of security concerns regarding the remote client access, this can be fully disabled for a GNSS Spider Server or be limited to GNSS Spider Administrators access only. Use the settings on the Security tab in the Configuration dialog accessible via the Tools/Configuration menu. A remote GNSS Spider GUI access requires the following IP ports to be open on the GNSS Spider Server computer and any firewall between the remote computer the GNSS Spider Server:

GNSS Spider Server Access Password
GNSS Spider: IP port = 9877 (Leica GNSS Spider Site Server Data Dispatcher) IP port = 9879 (Leica GNSS Spider Network Server Data Dispatcher) SQL Server: IP port = 1433
For access to a GNSS Spider Site Server or Network Server the remote client must know the GNSS Spider Server password. This server password is individually set during the installation for each GNSS Spider Site Server and Network Server. The GNSS Spider Server password is required for connections of the GNSS Spider GUI Client to a GNSS Spider Server as well as for connections between the different GNSS Spider Servers. Therefore a GNSS Spider Cluster Server as well as a GNSS Spider RTK Proxy Server must also know the correct password of the Network Server to which they are assigned.
Modify Server Access Passwords
The GNSS Spider Site Server and Network Server access password can only be modified using the local GNSS Spider Client GUI. It cannot be modified through a remote GNSS Spider GUI. To modify a local Site Server or Network Server password:
Start the GNSS Spider GUI Client.
Open the Local Site Server or Local Network Server.
Select Site Server Password or Network Server Password from the Tools menu.
For all local GNSS Spider Clients the passwords are updated. For example, changing the local Network Server password, will automatically update the same password for a locally installed Cluster Server or RTK Proxy Server, as well as for the connection shortcut entry in the GNSS Spider Server Management. Restart the computer so that the Password changes are ‘accepted’. For all remote GNSS Spider Clients that should still connect to the Site Server or Network Server, after the password has been changed, these must be updated separately. This can only be done directly at the computer where they are locally installed!

To update a GNSS Spider GUI Client connection shortcut entry to a remote Site Server or Network Server with a new password: Step 1 2 3 4 5
Action Start the GNSS Spider GUI Client. Open the Server Management Select the remote server connection to be updated. Right click and select Properties from the context menu. Modify the Password as needed.
To update a Cluster Server or RTK Proxy Server clients after changing the password of the remote Network Server to which these are assigned run the GNSS Spider Password Tool: Step 1 2
Action Open the Windows™ Start menu Select Programs → Leica GNSS Spider → Password Tool.
SBC default At first installation of the Spider Business Center automatically a default administrator master administrator account is created to allow access to the web GUI access using an internet browser. The default administrator account logon details are as follows:
User name:
Admin
Password:
Admin
It is strongly recommended to change the default password for this account after first logon and enter a valid email address for this account. Or to create a completely new master administrator account with a new name and password and then to delete the default Admin account.
Logged data file access
Access to logged GNSS Spider data files such as GNSS raw data, QC files and event log files, or RTK user access log files, is always possible directly on the local computer. To provide public access to some or all of the GNSS Spider product files, it is recommended to copy these to a FTP server (which is set-up with the required access security). GNSS Spider provides the tools to automatically push files onto FTP servers allowing public access. For security reasons, such an FTP server should either be installed in a company’s DMZ or with an external FTP provider. See Section “Distributed installation in a corporate LAN” below. For convenient and secure distribution of GNSS data sets from any

network to individual users via the internet we recommend using a web server application such as Leica SpiderWeb (http://spiderweb.leica-geosystems.com).
RTK Proxy – Security for real-time data access
The RTK Proxy server is specifically designed to provide secured access to real time data streams for conventional RTK or Network RTK. It does not require access to the GNSS Spider SQL database, but only a single IP communication channel to the GNSS Spider Network Server. To cope with a typical corporate Internet security policy, the communication to the RTK Proxy Server is always initiated from the Network Server (on the Intranet, inside the firewall) to the RTK Proxy Server (on the Internet or DMZ, outside the primary firewall). Ports in the firewall must only be opened in the outside direction, therefore protecting the Intranet from unintentional access. Consequently the RTK Proxy Server can be easily installed on a computer in a company’s DMZ, whilst the remaining GNSS Spider servers are installed within the secured Intranet, separated by a firewall from the outside Internet. The following IP communication port must be opened in a firewall to successfully connect from the Network Server to the RTK Proxy Server (in one direction only, from the LAN to the DMZ): • IP port = 9880 (Leica GNSS Spider RTK Proxy Server Data Dispatcher) See also Section “Distributed installation in a corporate LAN” below. Additionally, access to the individual RTK product services that can be provided through the RTK Proxy Server can be secured with various authentication and authorization methods, available through the optional GNSS Spider RTK User Management option. This option also provides the possibility to log individual user accesses, providing the necessary information to charge RTK users for services received. Note that no User-related data is stored on the server in the DMZ.
SBC Proxy – Security for user management access
The SBC Proxy server is specifically designed to provide secured access to all Spider Business Center related data and functions. It is used by the SBC web server portal, the GNSS Spider Network server and Leica SpiderWeb to communicate with the SBC Central Server. The GNSS Spider Network Server and SpiderWeb e.g. communicate with the SBC Central Server via the SBC Proxy to validate user login data for authentication that is stored in the SBC Central Server SQL database. Consequently the SBC Proxy Server can be easily installed on a computer in a company’s DMZ, whilst the remaining GNSS Spider Servers are installed within the secured Intranet, separated by a firewall from the outside Internet. The following IP communication port must be opened in a firewall to successfully connect from the Network Server to the SBC Central Server via SBC Proxy Server (in one direction only, from the LAN to the DMZ):
Page 64

Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
•
IP port = 80
The following IP communication port must be opened in a firewall to successfully connect from the SBC Central server to the SBC Proxy Server to allow communication between the two (in one direction only, from the LAN to the DMZ): • IP port = 8021 (Leica GNSS Spider SBC Proxy Server Data Dispatcher) See also Section “Distributed installation in a corporate LAN” below.
SQL Database
GNSS Spider does make use of the Microsoft ™ SQL Server database. This database contains all GNSS Spider configuration information and should therefore be well protected. It is therefore important that you enter a secure password for the SQL System Administrator (sa) during the installation of SQL Database. If no GNSS Spider remote access is required through the firewall, then the following port must not be open in your company’s firewall (i.e. this port must be closed). SQL Server: IP port = 1433
Distributed installation in a corporate LAN
This section is primarily of interest for distributed installations in a corporate network infrastructure. It does not apply to single standalone computer installations, such as a single reference station installation with the GNSS Spider Site Server only. It should help you when explaining the security aspects relating to GNSS Spider to your IT network administrator. A typical corporate network with public Internet access is structured in zones of different security levels.
Un-Secured Zone = Word Wide Web / Internet.
De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) = Subset of a corporate network, located between the unsecured Internet and the secure local area network (LAN or Intranet). This subset is the public part of the LAN. Communication between local and external networks are controlled by security devices such as routers, firewalls. Secured LAN/Intranet = Private network inside a company or organization.
Page 65
02.08.2012
Installation Guide - August 2012 - Leica GNSS Spider v4.3
With its individual server components, Leica GNSS Spider is perfectly designed to fit into this concept. Following are some sample information about the required IP ports to be opened in distributed installations. In general the GNSS Spider Site Server, Network Server and Cluster Server should be located in the secure LAN area on a single computer (or distributed over multiple computers), whilst for security reasons, the RTK Proxy Server ideally will be located in the DMZ.
Sample I: Providing raw data files using an FTP server
Page 66
No GNSS Spider specific IP ports need to be opened.

outside.
Firewall_2 needs to open standard FTP port from outside to inside.
The FTP server should be configured to have public as well as protected access available.
Sample II: Providing RTK Products via TCP/IP channel
Page 67
From the LAN (Intranet) to the DMZ (Firewall_1) only one port (port 9880) must be opened and only in one direction (LAN to DMZ)!
From the DMZ to the Internet (Firewall_2) all IP ports that are configured within the GNSS Spider RTK products to send data to TCP/IP must be opened to allow access from the Internet to the RTK Proxy Server.
For example, if a RTK product of the type Nearest Site is configured to use TCP/IP port 9000, then this particular port must be opened in Firewall_2. It is then not needed to open a port per individual site. In Firewall_1 only port 9880 must be open.
For example, if 20 RTK Products of type Single Site are configured for each one of 20 individual sites using ports 9000 9020, then all these particular ports must be open in Firewall_2, whilst in Firewall_1 still only the one port 9880 must be open.

Sample III: Providing RTK Products via NTRIP channel
Page 68
From the Intranet to the DMZ (Firewall_1) only one port (port 9880) must be opened and only in one direction (LAN to DMZ)!
From the DMZ to the Internet (Firewall_2) those IP ports must be opened that are configured within the GNSS Spider RTK products to send data to NTRIP-Client, to allow access from the Internet to the RTK Proxy Server. However, this should typically be only one port, since when using send data to NTRIP-Client it is possible (and advantageous) to use the same IP port for all products of this type. With NTRIP, individual products are identified thanks to their mount point descriptors.
For example, various RTK products of different types can be configured to send to NTRIP-Client port 8080. Then only this particular port must be opened in Firewall_2. It is then needed to open an individual port neither per site nor per RTK Product. On Firewall_1 only port 9880 must be open.

Page 69
From the Intranet to the DMZ (Firewall_1) only two ports (ports 80 and 8021) must be opened and only in one direction (LAN to DMZ)!
From the DMZ to the Internet (Firewall_2) only HTTP port 80 must be open, to allow web browser access to the SBC Web Server and Network Server and / or SpiderWeb access to the SBC Proxy Server.

Power Supply
The serial cable connection provides a line of communication between Receiver and Computer - it does not power the Receiver. The Receiver requires a 12V DC power supply. This is not supplied through the PC connection cable (described above) but can be supplied from a variety of sources. Best to use is the Leica power supply unit (Art. No. 722409). This should be connected to the receiver PWR port or Port2/PWR (GPS500). Also we recommend using a power backup such as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and an in-line surge arrestor to prevent damage due to lightning. A surge arrestor is also recommended for the antenna connection.
