Descripción: A Jazz gig book that has grid chords for the Ukulele....
FOR UKULELE
Featuring lyrics, CHORD BOXES FOR UKULELE and melody line, text, as well as black and white photos, these handy books are an ideal size for stuffing in your gig bag. Glance inside and you'll see they're super-sized packages of hit after hit for all musicians. The book has been re-chorded for ukulele by Brian Lemin who is something of a jazz fanatic and wants ukulele players to have the opportunity of playing Jazz Standards using advanced ukulele chords. For many the chords may be challenging; for most of us the jazz style of frequent chord changes, often within the same bar, will be challenging. However the joy of playing these wonderful sounding jazz chords can only be rewarding. I hope you will enjoy learning and playing many of these great tunes.
Brief Notes on the Re chording of this Book. Over the years I have created a huge database of advanced ukulele chords that I drag and drop onto the music. Yes, they are the lazy persons “Chord Boxes”, but that is the tradition of chording music for the ukulele. If you get any sheet music of around the 1920s/1930s, these chord boxes are what you will find for the uke players follow. Believe me they were not all simple chords, many songs were chorded in a very challenging manner, many of the arrangements were almost chord melodies. I think this reflects the popularity of the instrument and the playing skills of the amateur musicians of that time. Basically we can put this form of ukulele notation down to the very popular Ukulele Ike, he was quite the pop star of his period, and what was a sort of ordinary instrument became the rage instrument, rather like the guitar is in modern times. It is because of the popularity of the guitar and dying of the ukulele craze that the uke chord boxes disappeared, to be replaced initially with “guitar” chord boxes, then the more sophisticated “alpha numeric” systems of naming chords. (i.e. F7; B7aug5 and so on) Frankly I am an amateur, self-taught player, who has other things in life to do besides play the ukulele; and for me to remember such a huge range chords, notated by a letter and a number, that are demanded by jazz rhythm accompaniment is totally beyond me. So, lazy me,… but it enables me to play the music I love to a reasonable degree of proficiency. I also happen to only have three fingers that are able to work on my fret board hand. I hardly consider it a handicap as a chord shape I can’t play in one position I can play in another position on the fret board. I also use my thumb a lot. This has to minor extent influenced my choice of chord shapes used in re chorded book. Here are the principles I have used: 1. I have tried to use chords that stop all the strings (i.e. comparatively few open chords) this enables the player to dampen the chords without ringing strings changing the tones. The various chord dampening rhythms you can develop yourself, besides each is unique to the tune you are playing. 2. I have problems with some common minor and seventh shapes, so you might find I have chosen shapes up the fret board a bit for some of them. Sorry, but a good chord book and a black pen will enable you to choose your own shape. 3. I use a low G tuning for jazz playing and as far as I can see, there is no other choice for you too, if you want to be a jazz uke player. Having said that I have made no attempt to interpret the slash chords which designate the base note of the inversion you are using. Those chords are in my db but frankly I have not found that using them, results in my playing being improved. On a guitar, I certainly believe they make a difference. 4. I have tried to keep to the lower end of the fret board (say 5th fret and below) but frankly I think you can use higher placed inversions and get really good results for your own arrangement; the uke plays very well up to the 8th fret, pretty well up to the 10th fret, after that you need to be able to finger the shapes really firmly. I know that the last song in the book is missing! I know that one page of another song is missing, I have also missed the odd line of chords (not often.) I am pretty conscious that I will have made mistakes in chording (it has been a long and “terrible” job) but here it is “as is”. I do need to say that if you are new to jazz chord playing, the sounds of the individual chords may sound odd, but play the whole phrase and you will see and hear the pattern better. I have used various chord data bases in the process of re-chording these songs, and those chord that show a red dot are the ones that indicate the root note of the chord. I became tired and fed up towards the end of this task so they are less noticeable in the latter songs. OK. That’s it. Enjoy. Brian Lemin Feb 2015

GigBook Jazz cl
Trying to pin down the exact nature of jazz is nigh on iinpossible. The word has come to encompass many different types of innovative and experimental music which jazz critic Joachim Berendt could only generalise as the result of "the confrontation of blacks with European music (in the United States)". To square that very broad definition of jazz's origins with, say, the style of ItalianAmerican Tony Bennett - or even that of North Dakota's Peggy Lee, with her Scandinavian ancestry - is something of a cultural leap. However, jazz, which its African-American elder statesman Duke Ellington anyway preferred to call 'American Music', soon became more a musical state of mind than the exclusive property of any one ethnic group. Jazz may have been born out of the influences of West Africa, mediated by black experiences in the American south, but it soon established itself as the new musical lingua franca of a newly-fonned nation. It was up for grabs by anyone who responded to its infonnal spirit of expression. Whatever else it was, jazz was a true American invention.
In', Ellington's timeless 'Take The 'A' Train' evoking the Swing bands of the 1930s, and many examples of later jazz variants often too individual to represent anything but themselves. Worth a special mention though is Latin jazz in general and Brazilian jazz in particular where the songs of Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim ushered in the samba-flavoured bossa nova in the 1960s. 'Desafinado' and 'The Girl From lpanema' are included here along with 'Perfidia' and 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps'. What do they all have in common'? In searching for a definition Joachim Berendt went on to suggest that unlike European music. jazz, from the start, displayed 'a spontaneity and vitality of musical production in which improvisation play(ed) a role' as well as 'phrasing which mirror(ed) the individuality of the performing jazz musician·. That seems as good a thought as any to keep in mind as you delve into this impressive collection of jazz songs. They're some of the very best ever written, and countless singers have all tried to give them a personal touch. Now it's your.tum to perfonn them and to add your own particular brand of individuality.
This GigBook therefore offers a suitably br~d repre'loentative range of jazz classics, embrk:ing the coming of age of Ragtime with Fats Waller's 'Hcmeysuckle Rose', quintessential New Orleans Dixieland with 'When The Saints Go Marching

Alternative lyrics: {Boy} I'm feelin' mighty lonesome Haven't slept a wink I walk the floor and watch the door And in between I drink black coffee Since my gal went away My nerves have gone to pieces And my hair's tumin' gray.
Now a man is born to love a woman To work and slave to pay her debts. And just because he's only human To drown his past regrets In coffee and cigarettes!
I'm moonin' all the mornin' And mournin' all the night And in between it's nicotine And not much heart to fight black coffee. Feelin' low as can be. It' drivin' me cra'l'{ This waitin' for my baby To come back home to me.
I'm tatkin' to the shadows One o'clock to four And Lord how slow the moments go When all I do is pour black coffee Love's a sorry affair I know wt ere all the blues are 'Cause. baby I've been there.

Verse2: Now he's gone away and I'm alone With the memory of his last look Vague and drawn and sad I see it still All his heartbreak in that last look.
How he must have asked Could I just turn and stare in icy silence? What was I to do? What can one do When a love affair is over.
