Total Alternate Picking by German Schauss
In this lesson we will discuss playing 3- and 4-note groupings played with alternate picking. First, let’s take a look at the 3-note-per-string scales, which will make playing in groups of three and four easier than the standard major or minor scales which have three and two notes per string. Have a look at the 3-note-per-string scales I have provided. The formulas for those scales are: Ionian: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Dorian: 1, 2, ≤3, 4/11, 5, 6, ≤7 Phrygian: 1, ≤2, ≤3, 4/11, 5, ≤6, ≤7 Lydian: 1, 2/9, 3, #4/#11, 5, 6/13, 7 Mixolydian: 1, 2/9, 3, 4, 5, 6/13, ≤7 Aeolian: 1, 2/9, ≤3, 4/ 11, 5, ≤6, ≤7 Locrian: 1, ≤2, ≤3, 4, ≤5, ≤6, ≤7 The scale names are defined by the starting point, which is the 1st note on the E string. Assignment : Learn all those 3-Note-Per-String scales in all Keys and become comfortable with the shifts between the g and b string. Now, lets get to the 3 and 4 note groupings. The key to master all those sequences is a good alternate picking technique. Practice all examples with all 3-Note-Per-String scales in all 12 keys, so you get comfortable playing with playing in any position. Exercises 1 through 12 are groups in 4 ascending and descending movements. Exercises 13 through 20 are groups in 3 ascending and descending movements. Practice slowly and always with a metronome. Keep in mind that speed is a by-product of accuracy. So, be patient and never forget : MUSIC IS FUN !
