Drill Plugs, Float and Shoe

CMT Plugs

Float Collar Sitting on rubber the bit is relatively safe, but the float is a composite of hard cement, plastic and aluminium with a hole in the middle. The profile of the bit does not match the top of the float and so must be drilled into the cement carefully till all the cutters are in contact.

Shoe

Manual Mode-Enable/Disable •

Manual mode can be disabled by entering a value of 255 in the resume toolface timeout field on GP download tab. This is hardcoded into the firmware to disable manual commands from the start.

It is critical to be aware that performing a mode switch will turn on manual mode again. If this occurs the Resume previous toolface timeout will be 255 seconds.

Manual Mode-Enable/Disable • The vdf item RSEXT (extended status) should be included in the startup list and as a periodic list and should be closely monitored to verify that manual mode remains disabled throughout the run. •

RSEXT – includes Vertical mode on or off, and Manual mode on or off

Manual Mode-Enable/Disable •

On the Downlink Tab the “Geo-Pilot Manual Mode” commands must be included in the active downlink items pane.

16

Manual Mode-Enable/Disable •

If Manual commands need to be enabled for any reason a mode switch (cycling pumps) or a downlink “Enable” will turn them back on. This works only for 9600/7600 with 3.30+ firmware and for 5200 with 1.38 firmware.

## After Enable, the resume previous toolface timeout will be 255 seconds.##

Have to be turned OFF- Disable!!!

GXT-MARSS DOWNLOAD

18

GXT-MARSS DOWNLOAD • During Download the RPM threshold should be set higher to enable manual mode. This will be based on flow rate and GXT motor rev/gal output. Select a rpm value corresponding to a flow rate lower than you will be using while drilling. •

It´s recommended to use the minimum flow rate to turn the FEWD Tools on (Ex:. Flow rate for LWD on- 600gpm. Motor used has 0.12 rev/gal. Thus, Threshold for RPM on must have a value close to 600 x 0.12 =72). Keep in mind that the tool will not turn on until rpm exceeds this value.

• This will allow you to use manual mode should you have a problem with downlink communications.

GEO-SPAN  Please test the Geospan before running in the hole because if something not working properly we will have time to fix it without losing rig time.  Example: Pressure Lost on Stand Pipe. It was found an open valve on GeoSpan resulting on 30 min NPT. This happened because the GS´s valve was left opened.

CRUISE CONTROL  Discontinue use of cruise control in all 9600 hole sections, especially in build section due to many error involving cruise knowledge. • Tool 9600 drilled 1002 meters in 150 hours before failing due to severe housing slip and unable to maintain toolface. On surface the Mounting Adapter was found backed out of the Lower Housing and the SSP was found torqued up against the locating keys. The Upper Seal area of the tool was also broken and the Seal housing was parted and Driver sub thrust bearings were broken.

CRUISE CONTROL- real case January 20XX at approx. 12:00hrs the tool was drilling in inclination cruise but with very aggressive settings (max 80% deflection with 0.3 deg tolerance and correction factor of 6) there was lots of slip stick at this time also. The aggressive inc cruse settings causes the tool to hunt back and forth around the target settings with max deflection either up or down which will create a tortuous well path. The inclination measured at the GP ABG sensor during this period showed micro doglegs up and down approaching 12deg/30m in places. This practice was repeated at many intervals during the run.

DON´T FIRE and FORGET ....

Breaking in Rotary Seals Start rotation slowly to get oil lubricated over rotary seals. Stage up to full rotary speed over a period of 10 minutes.

 5 rpm for 1 minutes  10/20/30/40 rpm for 1 minutes EACH  60 rpm for 5 minutes  Remember to keep tool at zero deflection  Most practical to do while filling pipe/shallow pulse test.

Drilling out the Shoe 

Fill pipe and establish circulation parameters and wash down with good flow one stand before tagging cement or rubber plug.

If seals haven’t been broken in do it.

Ensure tool is set at zero deflection

Drill with low weight, 60 to 80 rpm and reduced flow

Pick off bottom frequently to clear debris

Be aware of the danger of pack offs & pressure spikes

Once satisfied plugs have been drilled, work string repeatedly through plugs, and increase flow

26

Drilling out the Shoe cont.. 

TAKE THE TIME REQUIRED - DO NOT RUSH

Once plugs have been drilled, can increase the WOB

Drill 6m below shoe, and then pull back in to ensure tool is free from debris, and float is not doughnuted around reference stabilizer or tool body

Reaming shoes should be drilled with a dedicated run if possible to avoid problems with excessive aluminum.

Drill rathole with normal good drilling practices

Note: Housing will probably rotate a lot while in casing

27

Tripping In 

Keep tool at Zero Deflection

If encountering tight hole, do not use excessive force to work through.

Stop, pull above restriction and work pipe to remove packed cuttings from around BHA to avoid pack off when pumps are turned on.

Start pumps carefully and step up to 50% of drilling flow

 Keep 1 man on pump throttle ready to turn off quickly. 

Ream through tight hole with ±100rpm and v. little WOB

Pick up and backream every 3 to 4 metres

28

You created this PDF from an application that is not licensed to print to novaPDF printer (http://www.novapdf.com)

Reaming In (Expecting tight hole) 

If expected to be tight, ream/wash from shoe to TD

Keep deflection at zero

Establish steady circ inside casing at 50% of drilling flow

 Record pressure and up/down weights 

Keep 1 man on pump throttle ready for pack offs

Wash in where no resistance is seen

Ream where resistance is seen

Recommend a clean up run with LG bit or FG stab if taking over from a push the bit system.

29

Backreaming 

Keep deflection at zero - best manual mode

Rotate and reciprocate drillstring as normal

Be aware of pack offs

30

Open Hole Drilling 

Initiate and maintain good recommended drilling practices

Ensure proper communications at all times

Back ream if necessary 

Impractical to turn off deflection just for singles

When circulating for an extended period: 

Turn off deflection - Save battery & less work for tool

Avoid last single to leave a quality “bite” for the antirotation device when you restart.

Sidetracking 

Select sidetrack point based on “drillability” and ABI trend

Make a ledge as per standard practice until it takes weight. NB Move slowly so housing doesn’t roll.

Time drill at 150L to 150R as bit takes weight until ABI verifies result

Historically have taken 8 hours plus.
