seagulls cheerfully playing made me instantly feel more relaxed. D He explained what had happened and how he couldn’t bear to leave the children unaccompanied ever again. He had just suffered the worst fright of his life. So from that day, we never left the children alone again. E The kids got dressed in record speed and even brushed their teeth without being asked. We rushed down to the play centre and dropped the children off. It was seven thirty! F So, that evening, we had hired a babysitter to come and look after the kids, but at the last minute she had cancelled due to illness. The day Mike experienced the fright of his life had started so well. We had got up nice and early in the morning. I seem to recall it was exactly five twenty nine when the kids jumped on our bed. Not ideal when you’re on holiday but understandably the children were excited and eager to have their breakfast and join their friends at the play centre. 1 _____________ Mike and I then breathed a sigh of relief. We were alone and would be without the children until the early afternoon. So we decided to take a stroll on the beach. It was at this moment that I was glad that we had decided to go away on holiday. Initially, when Mike came to me with the idea of going to Mexico, I was totally against it. Taking a family of five on holiday abroad is a great expense but Mike managed to persuade me. He’s good at that!

2 _____________ As the restaurant was nearby, we decided to go anyway. The kids would be in bed and we would check on them regularly. When we got to the restaurant, I was a little anxious. After twenty minutes, wanting to be reassured, I went back to the apartment to check on the kids. They were fast asleep and looked so cute. Amelie was cuddling her favourite teddy, Louisa was obviously finding it difficult adapting to the new hot climate and had both of her legs dangling out of the bed and then there was Tommy screwed up in a ball lying at the end of his bed. 3 _____________ My mind was now at rest. The first course arrived with a bit of delay and so it meant that Mike was a little later going to check on the kids. It was precisely 42 minutes after my last check that Mike left the restaurant. When he got to the apartment, he headed directly to the kid’s bedroom. When he got to the door, it was wide open. He placed his head round the door and he immediately noticed Amelie’s bed was empty. 4 _____________ It was at that precise moment that Mike heard a noise coming from the main bathroom. It was the sound of running water. He ran to where he heard the noise and just as he got there, he caught sight of Amelie opening the bathroom door. ‘Amelie, my darling, you’re ok!’ he said grabbing hold of her. ‘Yes, Daddy, I’m fine’, she replied. ‘Why were you out of your bed?’ he asked. ‘I was hot and I needed a drink’. ‘Oh ok, my darling, now go back to bed’ he replied. ‘Yes,
