Field Study Episode 5

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND LEARNER’S INTERACTION (focusing on different levels of abilities)

Name of FS Student: Jaymel Briones Course: BSED Math 2-1 Resource Teacher: Ms. Abigail Abanto Cooperating School: Caruhatan National High School Your Target At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in determining, understanding and accepting the learners’ diverse backgrounds; and in relating the learners’ background to their performance in the classroom. Your Map To reach your target, do the following tasks: 1. Observe two or more learners of different abilities but from the same grade or level 4.Write a narrative

Report and a brief Reflection on your Experience 3.Observe them as They participate in a Classroom

activity

2.Find out some information About their background

Your Tools Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for Individual Differences Read the following carefully before you begin to observe. Then write your observation report on the space provided. 1. Observe the class to see the differences in abilities of the learners.

2. Try to identify the students who seem to be performing well and those that seem to be behind.

3. Validate your observations by asking the teacher about the background (family, socio-economic, presence of some learning disabilities, etc.)Of these children.

4. Observe the behavior of both the high achieving and low-achieving learners. Note their dispositions, pace in accomplishing tasks, interaction with teacher, and interaction with others.

5. Observe the teacher’s method in addressing the individual learning needs of the students in his/her class.

OBSERVATION REPORT

Name of the School Observed: Caruhatan National High School School Address: Arti Subd., karuhatan, Valenzuela City Date of Visit: January 13, 2017

The class has a differences in their abilities to learn. They are like a weather who easily changing their mind. They are usually distracted and near to lack of interest.

The learners who performing well are the learners who can cope in the discussion even though the teacher was using different styles and approach while the learners are not performing well they are the learners who easily not interested and giving up

According to the interviewed gathered to the teacher about the background of her student I found out the most of the student are always absence in her class and having a math subject is difficult to them.

The behavior of a learner of high achieving are the one who always actively participating in the class and always ask the teacher to answers for certain question during the discussion, while the behavior of a learner of low achieving are the one who merely participating and often times are not.

During the discussion the teacher usually ask her students if they can follow and understand the discussion well because that is the only way that a teacher’ s know if her class is following her.

Your Analysis

1. Did your observation match the information given by the teacher? Were you able to correctly identify who among the students performed well and who did not? What behavior helped you identify them? (Volunteering to answer responding to teacher’s directions, etc.) Yes, the information given by the teacher matched my own observation of the students. Being a teacher you can easily identify who are really performing well and who did not. The only thing that we can help them by giving an approach that are suitable to their understanding. 2. Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class. Is there a wide gap between the students who are performing well and those that are not? In think there is no wide gap between the learners who are performing well and those that are not because they have their own ability to gain knowledge and understanding for every topics. May be the methods or approach is not fit to them. 3. Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students’ differences in abilities. How did the students respond to the teacher? The teacher using the student-centered approach in the class. And sometimes she uses a traditional way on how she deliver her topic. And usually there no new things that make a student excited

to learn. And that is why the students are getting tired or being not interested because they know already what teacher usually do.

Your Reflections 1. Recall the time when you were in the elementary or high school. Recall the high and low achievers in your class. How did your teacher deal with differences in abilities? Was your teacher effective? When I was in Grade 3, in our province and the classes’ hours is whole day. I have a classmate who really hard in solving subtraction in 3 digit because he interchanging it the rules in addition and also another classmate of mind was really good in math. In one seeing only he can answer it immediately without hesitation. Our teachers that time was focusing only to our classmate who really good in her subject but some of us is not. She show a little focus to the few but not usually.

2. With the principle of individual differences in mind, what methods and strategies will you remember in the future to ensure that you will be able to meet the needs of both the high and low achievers in your class?

I will assure that all my students treated equally in both high and low achievers in my class when regards in learning. And I will put an extra attention for the low achiever to cope immediately. I will impose a method and strategies that will cater their need to learn more and help them to become more productive and effective learners.
