My Map I will go through the following steps: Step 1. I will review Appropriateness of Assessment tools in Assessment of learning 2, 2007 By Santos, Rosita, pp. 11-22 Assessment of Learning 1, 2007 By Santos, Rosita, pp. 24-32 and otherreferences

Step 2.I will observe 3 different classes, interview 3 resource teachers and request of documents from them when necessary.

Step 3. I will identify proofs of the use of these assessment tools Step 4.Guided by a question/ questions. I will reflect on my experience then write down my reflection.

MY ANALYSIS 1. What assessment method/s did I observe to be most often used? Least often used? What could explain such observation? The assessment often used is the traditional or paper and pencil test. The multiple choice is the most appropriate tool being used by the teachers in measuring students learning. Authentic assessment is least often used because I guess, they are only elementary students that’s why most authentic assessment are not yet given. 2. If I were to re-teach the same lesson would I assess learning in the same way as my Resource Teacher s did? Explain. The lesson we has on our observation is about shapes (sides and corners). If I were to re-teach the same lesson, I would probably use some materials like models and representations of the shapes. Like for example in circle, I would use a ball or maybe globe. For triangle, the Mayon Volcano and such things. Representations may tend to increase students retention of the lesson.

3. Which of the assessment methods are categorized as traditional assessment? Which ones are classified as authentic assessment? The assessment methods categorized as traditional are paper and pencil tests like multiple choice, true-false, matching type, short answer and completion test. The assessment methods categorized as authentic are product rating scales like book reports, projects and also performance test, oral questioning and observation and selfreports.

4. How does traditional assessment differ from authentic assessment? Traditional assessment differs from authentic assessment in terms of what they measure. Like for instance, traditional measures the learning while authentic measures the process and the product of assessment of learning. Another term for traditional is paper-pencil which basically tells and limits assessment on paper and pencil only, while authentic means real-life procedures and learning’s. I read some articles saying that authentic is being used now because traditional assessment can’t cover all the learning or measure all the learning of the students. There are so many aspects that can’t be measured by traditional assessment.

MY REFLECTIONS 1. Is there such a thing as best assessment method or an assessment method that is appropriate for all types of learning? I think there’s no such thing as best assessment for all types of learning and LEARNERS. Basically, assessment tools are used to measure students learning but we are not 100% sure that the tools measure all the learnings. And for the learners, every student has each types of strategy in learning or their way to learn. If one assessment tool is going to be used, I guess it won’t cover all the learners preferences and styles, also the multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of assessing learning. There’s no such thing as perfect tool, just like as perfect instruction, so teachers should always be innovative and open for all the problems/challenges and be ready for it.

My Portfolio Complete the Table on Assessment Methods. Write the most appropriate use of each assessment method. To complete the table do not hesitate to do further research.

Assessment Method 1. Written response instruments

a. Multiple

b. True-False

c. Matching

Appropriate Use (When to use it) Written assessments are activities in which the student selects or composes a response to a prompt. In most cases, the prompt consists of printed materials (a brief question, a collection of historical documents, graphic or tabular material, or a combination of these). However, it may also be an object, an event, or an experience. Student responses are usually produced “on demand,” i.e., the respondent does the writing at a specified time and within a fixed amount of time. These constraints contribute to standardization of testing conditions, which increases the comparability of results across students or groups. With a multiple-choice response format, a large number of different topic areas/tasks can be covered within the same test and the questions are easy to score. However, because all potential answers must be chosen by some candidates, it is time-consuming to write good questions.

True-false questions are typically used to measure the ability to identify whether statements of fact are correct. The questions are usually a declarative statement that the student must judge as true or false.

e. Completion

2. Product Rating Scales (for book reports, projects, other creative endeavor)

3. Performance tests (Using a microscope, solving Math word problem)

a. Performance checklist

With a short-answer response format, a large number of different topic areas/tasks can be covered within the same test and these questions are easy to score. In addition, less time ie required to write these questions compared to multiplechoice ones. The scoring guide for short-answer questions should include predetermined scoring procedures and mark allocations. Each required point in the answer should be listed with its relative mark allocation.

4. Oral questioning

5. Observation and self-reports

Future application: As a future teacher I can say that this, picking and using assessment tool is a challenge. Teachers should not be stay put on what they have been used to follow or do. Time changes. Leaning changes, students do too. We have diverse students with different preferences, styles in learning and multiple intelligence so teachers must consider all of this before using or measuring students learning. Teachers should be open to all possibilities and can innovate things inside the classroom.
