Engaging, Phonics-Controlled Stories for Emergent Readers

A Note No te to t o Parents and Teachers Logic of English® readers may have fun, interesting stories and pictures, but there’s there’s something significant missing... sight words! How is that possible? Unknown to many many English speakers, there are phonograms (letter combinations) combinations) and spelling rules that explain 98% of English words. Of the remaining remaining 2%, most can be explained morphologically (such as the mysterious W in two, which becomes clear when learned in the context of twin, twelve, and twenty). t wenty). In other words, the numerous highfrequency words that are often termed “sight words” can be learned logically logic ally instead of simply memorized. For example: Why is there a silent E at the end of the word “have”? Because English words do not end in V. V. Why does the O in “go” say its long sound? s ound? Because A, E, O, and U usually say their long sounds at the end of a syllable.

Research shows that when students are taught the phonograms Research shows p honograms and spelling rules, their reading and spelling skills improve dramatically. At the beginning of each reader, a list shows which phonograms and spelling rules are taught in the corresponding Foundations Curriculum before Curriculum before reading that story.
