Gyratory Crusher Shafting Inspection and Testing Requirements Ultrasonic Testing 6.5 All forgings shall be ultrasonically tested in the final heat treated condition, and in accordance with ASTM A388. 6.6 Longitudinal beam examination shall be carried out using the back reflection calibration technique. 6.7 Testing surfaces shall be machined and possess a surface roughness no greater than 250 micro inches (6.3 micrometers). 6.8 Discontinuity indications shall be recorded and reported in accordance with the following instructions: 6.8.1

Discontinuity indications whose amplitude equals or exceeds 20% of the calibrated back reflection shall be reported in increments of 10%.

6.8.2

Discontinuity indications equal to or exceeding 5% of the back reflection, providing they present themselves as traveling indications, are continuous, or appear as clusters (See ASTM A388).

6.8.3

A reduction of back reflection of 30% or greater when associated with the presence of a discontinuity indication.

6.9 Acceptance Criteria: 6.9.1

Forgings shall be free of cracks, flakes, bursts, piping, and open segregation.

6.9.2

Forgings shall be rejected if testing detects any discontinuities that produce indications with a complete loss of back reflection. A complete loss of back reflection is assumed when the back reflection falls below 5%.

Magnetic Particle Testing 6.10 Finish Machined Main Shafts shall be magnetic particle tested in accordance with ASTM E709. 6.11 Report all indications – No linear indications are permitted. A linear indication is defined as an indication whose length is equal to or greater than three (3) times its width. Machining 6.12 Machined features and dimensions shall comply with machining drawings provided as attachments to the applicable purchase order.
