Yet Petit did seem to find himself booked and sent off particularly easily for a player whose style combines supreme quality with a robustness that some say has been nurtured by the English game. He threatened to quit England after his sendingoff against Everton in March. The upside is the minor miracle of Ginola’s renaissance at Tottenham. It seemed that his career in England was as good as over in his last days at Newcastle when Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon meted out some particularly brutal treatment to the Frenchman’s sublime skills. Not surprisingly, Ginola fell over after being not so much tackled as mugged, but the referee clearly believed the prevailing wisdom that Ginola was prone to

diving and promptly booked him for going to ground. After his transfer to Tottenham and the gloomy prognosis offered by many as George Graham took the managerial reins, Ginola blossomed in adversity. He scored a number of fantastic individual goals, notably against Barnsley. And in last season’s League Cup semi-finals he managed to put a beauty past Wimbledon then preoccupy the team on the pitch and the Wimbledon manager Joe Kinnear (whose outbursts were as banal as they were predictable) off it. Yet, for once, sheer class triumphed with a vote of player of the year from both players and journalists. A double victory for a man still reviled at home as “the assassin” for giving away the ball in the last minute of France’s 1994 World Cup qualifying cam-

paign, allowing Bulgaria to score, and costing his country a place in the finals. “Ginola had been playing out of his skin for the first couple of months of this year, when the players voted. That wasn’t a surprise,” says Mark Lawrenson, the television football commentator and former Liverpool centre-back. “The journalists’ award did surprise me. You need to be playing in a successful team to win that. Or so I thought.” Lawrenson argues that if the English game and its players adapt to the advent of the French, they must benefit: “When Cantona was at United, players such as Beckham and Giggs saw him doing the famous extra training. Free kicks, dead ball skills, were basically all he did. They thought ‘I’ll have some of that’ and you’ve got these young players who fol-

lowed his example and they’ve got fantastic ball skills.” But no matter how willing English youngsters are to learn – and Houllier believes there is an outstanding crop of young English talent at the moment – they will not be able to benefit from the French and foreign influence unless they are allowed to perform at the highest level. Wenger last week addressed himself to that problem: “Long term [the influx of foreign players] will have an effect because 100 English players don’t play,” he said. He argues that if the foreign element becomes greater than 50%, it can become problematic for the development of English talent. One just has to hope that Wenger’s team selection so far, which has consistently featured more than 50% of nonBritish players, is an aberration.
