Did you know in India every year nearly: • 500,000 people die because of nonavailability of organs. • 200,000 people die of liver disease, 150,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 get one. • 1,000,000 people suffer from corneal blindness
WHAT IS ORGAN DONATION..
Donation of biological tissue or an organ of the human body, from a living or dead person to a living recipient in need of a transplantation.
Indian surgeon Sushruta in the 2nd century BC, used autografted skin transplantation in nose reconstruction. HISTORY The first human organ transplant was a kidney transplant performed by Dr. Joseph Murray in 1954.
WHY DONATE? • Every 16 minutes, another name is added to the waiting list. • Each year, thousands of people die while waiting for a transplant, because no suitable donor can be found for them. The need for organ donors has never been greater.
ORGAN TRADE AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING • Organ trade is the trade involving inner human organs for organ transplantation. • Victims can be kidnapped and forced to give up an organ. • Organ is removed without their knowledge. • Some victims are even murdered.
ORGAN BLACK MARKET IN NUMBERS • Illegal Organ Trade Market: $0.075 Billion ($75 Million). • Profit for Organ Trafficker : 15X Between Buying Price and Selling Price. • Profits from Selling Dead Body :$200,000
ORGAN BLACK MARKET IN NUMBERS • Average paid by Kidney Buyer: $150,000 • Average paid to Seller of Kidney: $5,000 • What middle men gets out of this? 150000-5000=$145000
OBSTACLES TO ORGAN DONATION • Legal Issues. • Religious superstitions. • Organ Transplant Scams and rackets. • Fear, ignorance and misunderstanding. • Not incentivizing donations- Singapore is an example of a country that has made paying donors for their organs legally
LEGAL ISSUES • The donation process without any legal formalities is limited to the near relatives. • 13 forms needs to be signed. • Transplantation of Human Organs Act(1994).
