Filmmaking In The Philippines Historical Timeline HISTORY TIMELINE 1888 –The kinetograph which was invented near the beginning of the by Thomas Alba Edison. 1893 - The world’s first film studio and laboratory setup by Edison in New Jersey. December 28, 1895 - Paris, France, the Lumiere brothers, Louis and August, unveiled their invention, called the Cinematographe. 1897 - Films reached the Philippines almost two years after the Paris film exhibition January 1, 1897 - The first foreign movie—the Espectaculo Cientifico de Pertierra—was presented in Escolta. August 29, 1897 - The first film using Lumiere cinematographe debuted here to a select Spanish audience who paid exorbitant admission prices. Financed by two Swiss businessmen, Leibman and Peritz. 1898 - First movies shot in the country by, Antonio Ramos, the first motion picture producer to film in the Philippines May 1, 1898 – At The Battle of Manila Bay, Admiral George Dewey sailed with his naval armada into the bay, accompanied by a cameraman who recorded the typical home life of Filipinos. 1899 – 1902 – The Filipino- American War aborts filmmaking activities here. 1909 - Local interest in film production was rekindled Albert Yearsley shot the Rizal Day celebration at the Luneta, shown in local theaters some months later. Other Filipino festivals and occurrences filmed by Albert Yearsley included the Manila carnival in 1910, the eruption of Taal Volcano in 1911 and a devastating typhoon in Cebu in 1912. 1909 - The first story filmed in the Philippines - Rose of the Philippines. 1911 - Rose of the Philippines was released in the country. 1912 – Two American entrepreneurs make a film about Rizal’s executuin. 1912 - The First Filipino Film, Dalagang Bukid, by Director Jose Nepomiceno, The Father of Philippine Movies. 1912 - the Board of Censors for Cinematographic Films was established. 1919 – Julian Manansala establishes the first Filipino Movie Studio, Malayan Movies. The 1920s is regarded as the first golden age of Philippine cinema. 1926 – Julian Manansala Pictures 1929 - Board of Censors for Moving Pictures supercedes B.C.C. 1930s - Director Julian Manansala, the Father of Nationalistic Films, makes the movie Patria Amore (Beloved Country) 1930 – Nepomuceno Films 1937–1980 - Sampaguita Pictures August 1, 1939 - LVN Productions (1939-1961), was launched with its inaugural film Giliw Ko. 1946 - Premiere Productions (1946-current)
1947 - Lea Production (1947-1985) 1948 - Lebran Pictures (1948-?) 1950s – The Golden Age of Philippine Cinema 1952 – The first FAMAS awards. 1952 - Director Manuel Conde brought his film Genghis Khan, to the Venice Film Festival. 1954 - Ifugao, directed by Gerardo de Leon and produced by Premiere Productions. 1956 - Anak Dalita, directed by Lamberto Avellana and produced by LVN Productions, won best picture awards in international film competitions. 1962 - Poe-Zshornack (1962-?) 1963 - Tagalog Ilang-Ilang Production (1963-?) 1964 - FPJ Productions (1964-2004) 1969 - Rosas Productions (1969-?) 1974 - Regal Films (1974-current) Major: Regal Films, Viva Films, Seiko Films, 1981 - Viva Films (1981-current) 1981 - Seiko Films (1981-current) Other major productions: Seven Star Productions, Wonder Films, FLT Films, Four-N-Films,GP Films, Bukang Liwayway Productions, Bancom, Agrix, Bonanza Films, Moviestar Flms, RNB Films, and Octoarts Films. 1985 - Imus Production (? - ?) 1986 - EDL Production (1986-?)
